October 15, 2012 - Superintendent's update to the Board

David Lloyd George (DLG) Elementary is firmly strapped into the high-tech education train. And has it ever left the station. On October 3, the school community was invited to the school's first Tech Night. During the evening, parents visited the school with their sons and daughters and got a crash course from teachers on how the school was leveraging technology effectively in the classroom. DLG is also one of the few elementary schools currently operating a full online news website called the Medium , where a group of highly committed Grade 7 students cover the school's events, post national and sports news and even podcasts.
On October 4, Secord Elementary celebrated its brand new playground and playfield with a special event complete with cake, coffee and plenty of time to play on the playground. The new field is amazing and a tribute to the hard work of the school ’s parent community and our hard working staff.
On October 5 th , Nootka Elementary school students got an opportunity to learn about aboriginal culture in a real full sized Teepee.
Laurier Annex had plenty to be thankful for on Friday, October 5 th . This was the day they held their annual Harvest Lunch. Each student brought one item to add to their class “ Stone Soup ” . The event culminated with all the staff and students gathering in the gymnasium that had been transformed into a harvest theme with colourful student art, plants and gourds.
On October 5, Trafalgar Elementary had an opportunity to celebrate their Principal Adele Tremblay, who was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal by Canadian Senator, Mobina Jaffer. The school community sang some songs, which were accompanied by the drum playing of Principal Tremblay. It was a very colourful and celebratory event.
On October 12, an auditorium full of Britannia Secondary students got to hear from Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen and enjoyed some fun and quirky experiments conducted by local university students. The event kicked off National Science and Technology Week.
On Friday, October 12, Nightingale Elementary held their centennial celebration. The entire school was transformed into a homage to the school ’s history. The event included multiple “decade” rooms and a historical memorabilia room. All the while, visitors were serenaded by the Tupper Jazz Band. School staff dressed up for the occasion in historical costumes.
On Monday, October 15, the Superintendent met with Principals and the Director of Education from Xiaoshan Education Bureau. He will be visiting these schools next week in China.
On Friday, October 5, the Superintendent spoke to the SFU Fall graduating class of 2012 – including BEd. and BSc (Environment) students and graduates being awarded Masters and Doctoral degrees.
