Born on March
30,1853,Groot-Zundert,
Netherlands Vincent
Vangogh spent the
short span of his life,
doomed to failure. It
was only after 150 years
of his birth he got the
recognition that was
due and became
world-famous for his
expressionistic style in painting. The striking,
vibrant colors reflecting his frenzied mood swings
are the trademark of Van Gogh’s paintings. Van
Gogh initially borrowed this from the Japanese
art form. Later his lackadaisical training as an
evangelist and the art of impressionism inspired
him for further experimentations with it.

This maestro was financially dependent on his
brother Mauve and his personal life was torn
between spurned love and questionable affair
with a pregnant prostitute. At the age of twenty
seven when Vangogh was veering in and out
different insignificant jobs, like a salesman and
French tutor, he painted his early masterpiece
‘Potato eaters’. It reflected the despondency of
peasant lives which he had experienced during
his stay in mines. However sadly enough it was
horrendously drawn ahead of time and therefore
hardly valued by contemporary critics. In Arles
Van Gogh wrote most of his famous works like
Bedroom at Arles (1888), The Night Café (1888),
and Starry Night (1889). In the haste to capture
work on the canvas he used to spread the colors
directly from pallet knife or the tube itself evading
the brushwork. In the last two years before his
death he had suffered from wild insanity and
kept on painting self portrayals. It was said that
Vincent Van Gogh’s mother threw most of his
painting, as she was ignorant about the real
value of those masterpieces. Van Gogh
committed suicide in 1890 with only one painting
sold in his lifetime.

A man with the toothbrush mustache, bowler
hat, bamboo cane and a funny walk, can be
none other than Charlie Chaplin, the pivotal star
of silent Hollywood. He was recognized as the
funny ‘little tramp’ on screen but a melancholic
tragic hero off screen. Born in 1889 Charlie
Chaplin spent a grim childhood in utter poverty.
Both his parents were stage actors but his father
lost his fortune after alcohol and his mother
suffered from blindness and mental trauma.
Charles Spencer Chaplin was bound to go
Hanwell School for Orphans and Destitute
Children. All his efforts to be an English stage
actor went in vain and at the age of 25 America
discovered this King of Comedy when Mack
Sennett made him his star comedian.
accompanied with pangs of pathos underneath.
Behind the veil of bone tickling comedy and
acrobatic skills the tragic hero remains unseen by
the audience till his book ‘Charles Chaplin
Autobiography’ unveiled these dark secrets.
