Bridge the gap between aspirations and achievement
Research shows that the following factors are critical for students to achieve their postsecondary goals. Students are far more likely to reach their goals when they can:
See What’s Possible
Develop Critical Non-Cognitive Habits
Acquire College Knowledge
Take Ownership Over Their Path
See What’s Possible
To broaden students perspective, the Naviance Curriculum includes inspiring videos of other students who are just a few years ahead them. These students were able to find creative ways to overcome challenges and pursue their own postsecondary path. Students also see successful leaders who share about the paths they took to accomplish unique goals, helping students develop confidence that they can achieve their own goals.
Develop Critical Non-Cognitive Habits
The Curriculum also includes lesson to help students develop critical non-cognitive skills – to seek help when needed, to determine priorities, and set goals and follow through. The Curriculum helps students develop skills for time management, working through stress, taking responsibility, and utilizing strengths to address challenges.
Acquire College Knowledge
In a study of Chicago Public School students, 96% of seniors aspired to attend college, but only 61% actually enrolled in a degree program. The study identified effective participation in the college process as a critical element to a student’s chances of enrollment. Many of the students did not have families who were knowledgeable about the college process or have access to private counselors to guide them. The Naviance Curriculum includes 19 lessons on college readiness, to ensure students understand and can effectively navigate the process. The lessons cover every essential element of applying including different types of colleges, application deadlines, standardized testing, financial aid and what makes a compelling application.
Take Ownership Over Their Path
The Naviance Curriculum is a step-by-step guide for students to reflect on their strengths, and develop the skills and knowledge necessary to persevere. Because the Curriculum is available school-wide, schools can provide a scalable resource for every student to develop key skills and own their path.
Pre and post-assessments of college knowledge allow schools to measure their progress at each grade.
Content Sequencing
Content sequencing for the Naviance Curriculum uses the Posner and Strike Sequencing Schemes, which include learning-related, content-related, and world-related sequencing.
Learning-related sequencing is based on concept knowledge and prerequisite knowledge. Learning-related sequencing assures that students acquire required knowledge before moving to the next concept (Morrison, Ross, Kaman, & Kemp, 2011.)
Content-related sequencing provides a unit of content, if necessary, to allow them to gain knowledge within sequence fluently.
World-related sequencing helps learners engage in a sequence that mirrors the sequence of learning they would engage in throughout the college readiness process.
The Curriculum was built to be flexible in terms of how schools implement.
In a pilot with 6 schools, over 50% of students improved their readiness scores from pre to post assessment and there was an 8% increase in scores in college knowledge and financial literacy.
