The 23 Things concept is familiar to most of us in the library world. Some have tried it out, some have tried a version of it, some still have doubts about whether it works, and some think it's over. Well, we’re here to tell you, it's still going strong! Nebraska's state-wide lifelong learning program, Nebraska Learns 2.0, started as a 16 week program in 2008-2009. The original program was so popular it has continued as an ongoing program, with one new Thing offered each month since April 2009. Starting in February 2012, a BookThing was added to the program. Program organizers Christa Burns and Michael Sauers will talk about the process they have laid out over the past few years, how they've responded to participant feedback, and how the program became what it is today. They will also show other current examples of self-directed online learning programs, such as Boston Public Library's Learning for Life Online and the UK-based 23 Things for Professional Development. NCompass Live - June 11, 2014 http://nlc.nebraska.gov/ncompasslive/ Broadband is a foundation for economic opportunity, job creation, global competitiveness, attraction and retention of residents plus a better way of life for individuals, small businesses. As a result, small businesses, workers, and communities must have the broadband infrastructure, training tools to participate and compete in a changing economy. Libraries are and can play in key role in helping communities move forward. The presentation will highlight relevant points from recent household and business surveys focused on broadband as well as resources available through the Nebraska Broadband Initiative. The Nebraska Broadband Initiative is funded through a grant to the Nebraska Public Service Commission. The Nebraska Information Technology Commission Community Council (NITC), University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL), Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) and the AIM Institute are cooperatively leading the effort to address the broadband planning needs of Nebraska’s communities. Presentation for a Society of American Archivists Web Archiving Roundtable professional development webinar. Session Description: Two co-authors, Alexis Antracoli, Records Management Archivist at Drexel University and Kristen Yarmey, Associate Professor and Digital Services Librarian at the University of Scranton will share their experiences and engage in discussion about their web archiving projects. The work they will be talking about is covered in “Capture All the URLs: First Steps in Web Archiving” (http://palrap.pitt.edu/ojs/index.php/palrap/article/view/67). Kristen will discuss her and her colleagues’ first steps in web archiving at the University of Scranton, including making the case to campus stakeholders, finding funding, choosing Archive-It as well as selecting content and seeds to capture. Alexis will talk about establishing policies and implementing QA procedures. Both Alexis and Kristen will provide insights on stumbling blocks, lessons learned, and future plans. Plenty of time will be allotted for questions and discussion.

Explore what a WiR is, how WiRs collaborate with community members and GLAM institutions (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums), and why collaborations between Wikipedia and public libraries are mutually beneficial and have an impact. Kim Gile, Director of Branch Services & Engagement, will reflect on the residency at KCPL and give an update on the Library’s Wikipedia journey that started in 2018.

Technology is an ever changing landscape and classes are a great way to help patrons become savvier technology users. Learn how to grow interest in your library’s technology courses with strategies for assessment, marketing, and curriculum development. Presenter: Jen Eilers, Library Assistant, Iowa City Public Library. Jen organizes and coordinates a team of librarians who teach 4-5 classes a month to adult learners. The classes focus on technology and information literacy skills for the Iowa City Community. She also staffs the information desk and problem solves various patron technology issues through the library's drop-in tech zone.

Presenter: Laura Solomon, MCIW, MLS is the Library Services Manager for the Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN). She has been doing web development and design for more than twenty years, in both public libraries and as an independent consultant. She specializes in developing with Drupal. She is a 2010 Library Journal Mover & Shaker. She's written three books about social media and content marketing, specifically for libraries, and speaks nationally on both these and technology-related topics. As a former children's librarian, she enjoys bringing the "fun of technology" to audiences and in giving libraries the tools they need to better serve the virtual customer.
