I- LETTER FROM THE CHAIR:
My goals for the department during 2010 were to rejuvenate and modernize it. Working
together with more than 226 faculty members, nearly 30 residents and several hundred
Technologists & Technicians, nurses, administrators, and staff who make up the department, we
have made rapid strides toward achieving those goals. This year we achieved an overall annual
productivity of 4,958,016 tests which could not have been reached without our dedicated
manpower (944 employees).
With the appointment of new Heads of Laboratories, Heads of Units and Laboratory Directors and
with the creation of an Executive Committee, the Department now has the infrastructure it needs
to continue its trajectory. All through 2010, we continued a steady expansion in our three major
missions; Laboratory Services, Teaching & Training and Research Activities.
In the Laboratory service arena, we continued to push ahead with the implementation of Quality
Assurance System at Al– Manial Clinical Pathology Laboratory that has replaced our vulnerable
home grown system. The construction of both the new Laboratory at the New Maternity Hospital
& the New Emergency Hospital are among our top priorities and we anticipate moving into the
facility by mid 2011. Teaching activities also remained very strong & the Department's pre–
master & pre-doctorate training programs have been modified. In the Research arena, several
research projects were funded by the faculty under the roof of the the 2-5yr plan for the Research
activities of the Department which involved all 4 specialties of the Department (Hematology,
Immunology, Microbiology and Chemistry. As for our international publications, over 20 articles
were published by our faculty, several of which were in the high impact journals.
Another source of pride for me and for the department as a whole was that the Department held 2
very successful Scientific Conferences; 1st Annual Scientific Conference “CLINCHEM 2010”
nd
from 31 March -2 April with the theme Molecular Biology into the Future & a 2 CLINCHEM 2010
th
“Transfusion & Quality updates; Revolution not evolution” on the 24 of October. The Department
is building on an extraordinary legacy and has great potential and we plan to make it a yearly
event
In summary, the Department is on the right path and we look forward to further progress. We
hope that in collaboration with our colleagues in the Faculty and Hospital we can upgrade our
research, teaching and clinical enterprise in a fashion that melds with the programmatic directions
of the University as a whole.

1. Executive Committee for Laboratory Affairs:
As things evolved over time, we found that it was necessary to form an Executive Committee,
which has been meeting every month for the past couple of months usually one week prior to the
Board meeting of the Department. At those meetings, the Executive Committee reviews the major
issues facing the Department, weighing pros and cons and making preliminary decisions, to be
ratified by the Board as a whole at the actual Board meeting of the Department. The Committee is
comprised of:

  • 3. I- LETTER FROM THE CHAIR: My goals for the department during 2010 were to rejuvenate and modernize it. Working together with more than 226 faculty members, nearly 30 residents and several hundred Technologists & Technicians, nurses, administrators, and staff who make up the department, we have made rapid strides toward achieving those goals. This year we achieved an overall annual productivity of 4,958,016 tests which could not have been reached without our dedicated manpower (944 employees). With the appointment of new Heads of Laboratories, Heads of Units and Laboratory Directors and with the creation of an Executive Committee, the Department now has the infrastructure it needs to continue its trajectory. All through 2010, we continued a steady expansion in our three major missions; Laboratory Services, Teaching & Training and Research Activities. In the Laboratory service arena, we continued to push ahead with the implementation of Quality Assurance System at Al– Manial Clinical Pathology Laboratory that has replaced our vulnerable home grown system. The construction of both the new Laboratory at the New Maternity Hospital & the New Emergency Hospital are among our top priorities and we anticipate moving into the facility by mid 2011. Teaching activities also remained very strong & the Department's pre– master & pre-doctorate training programs have been modified. In the Research arena, several research projects were funded by the faculty under the roof of the the 2-5yr plan for the Research activities of the Department which involved all 4 specialties of the Department (Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology and Chemistry. As for our international publications, over 20 articles were published by our faculty, several of which were in the high impact journals. Another source of pride for me and for the department as a whole was that the Department held 2 very successful Scientific Conferences; 1st Annual Scientific Conference “CLINCHEM 2010” nd from 31 March -2 April with the theme Molecular Biology into the Future & a 2 CLINCHEM 2010 th “Transfusion & Quality updates; Revolution not evolution” on the 24 of October. The Department is building on an extraordinary legacy and has great potential and we plan to make it a yearly event In summary, the Department is on the right path and we look forward to further progress. We hope that in collaboration with our colleagues in the Faculty and Hospital we can upgrade our research, teaching and clinical enterprise in a fashion that melds with the programmatic directions of the University as a whole.
