Yannick Vu ve Ben Jakober’in aralarındaki ilginç ilişki
Flash-Back, Yannick Vu ve Ben Jakober’in erken dönem
bireysel işlerinin yanı sıra 1993’teki Venedik Bienali için
ürettikleri Leonardo’nun Atı’ndan başlayarak süregelen
ortak çalışmalarından da bir seçki sunuyor.
Introduced as collectors at the Golden Children
exhibition, Yannick Vu and Ben Jakober are two artists
who consider themselves as wanderers. Ben of
Hungarian origin was born in Vienna, brought up in
England and lived in France; Yannick was born in France
of a Vietnamese father and French mother. They both
chose Spain to create and establish the Jakober
Foundation.
The interesting relationship between Yannick Vu and
Ben Jakober is the fruit of a spiritual, cultural, creative
marriage: a cohabitation between “three artists” . Ben
Jakober is interested by the contemporaneousness of
the materials, and the ways in which he can restore or
deliver an archaic overtone or usage to this modernity.
Yannick Vu, on the contrary, is not preoccupied by this
quality of modernity, but by the expressive spiritual
quality of her images.
In the couple Jakober – Vu there is another marriage:
sculpture and painting, between western technological
euphoria and equilibrium, indifference towards the
materials and a need for art always to be like a
reservoir in which ideas, lie and ferment, where they
retreat into themselves to create a concept, an idea, a
reading of the world. The two artists from different
backgrounds converge in a common space in which the
work of art merges into a unique form.
Flash-Back presents individual early works of Yannick
Vu and Ben Jakober and their joint works beginning
with the Leonardo’s Horse they produced for the 1993
Venice Biennial.

Marcel Duchamp’ın 1920 tarihli, “French window” (Fransız pencere)

gönderme. Duchamp, pencerenin camlarını siyah deriyle örtüp
görünümü karartarak cinsellik ve ölüm temalarını çağrıştırmıştı.

Refreshed Window, 1989
Circuit boards, wood frame, light box
Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation Collection
An obvious reference to Marcel Duchamp’s 1920 Fresh Widow, a pun
on the so called “French window”, whose glass panes he covered in
black leather obscuring the view and suggesting the themes of
sexuality and death. The light behind the window through semi-
transparent circuit boards expresses that there is light at the end of
the tunnel.

Mazzocchio II, 1992

Brass
Artist’s collection
While working and living in art, Ben Jakober gradually started to look for historical references and sources. He
became highly interested in the work of Paolo Uccello and tries to maket hem with new and contemporary
materials, in three dimensions. Thereafter Paolo Uccello’s Mazzocchio, a characteristic Florentine head dress of
the 15th century whose peculiar structure made it an ideal subject fort he artist’s experiments in perspective,
became the focus of Jakober’s interest. A first model made of black and white marble is at the Gori Collection
Sculpture Park in Pistoia; the first small metal version measuring 100 cm in the Jakober Foundation, and this
larger but differently structured example made of brass is the forerunner of two 10m high permanent
commissions, one leaning against the city wall of Prato (Florence) the other at Es Canyar in Mallorca.

Glazed tiles on fiberboard
Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation Collection
At the death of his daughter Maima in a motorcycle accident, aged 19, in 1992, Ben Jakober was
only able to think and work in black and white. He made the series called Cruxigrams. As part of
this enigma, each time the network of meaning is organised around the cross, Jakober just as well
prefers the coldness of marble, the warmth of wood, the hardness of metal, the softness of
fabric, the precision of earthenware, the satin gloss of ceramic, the elasticity of imitation leather,
or the ambiguity of Plexiglas. Based on crossword puzzle diagrams, all of the works bear the
names of famous cathedrals or Saints. Made of ceramic tiles, Chartres is the first in the series and
named after a cathedral in France.

This was one of the models for a commission for a property in northern
France near Soissons. The subject refers to the legend of an act taking
place in the year 486 when Clovis the first King of France was dividing

struck and broke a silver liturgical vessel with his sword. The furious
King then struck the soldier’s head with his mace killing him on the spot.

Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and others used them and Andy Warhol
showed a series based on the idea in 1984 without fully
understanding the Rorschach test.

simgesi II Cavallo di Leonardo (Leonardo’nun Atı)
heykeline dönüşmüştür. Çizimden hareketle yapılan
küçük metal bir maketi sonrasında kil bir maket
izledi; nihayet, bu sonuncu maket bilgisayar destekli
çizimlerin yapılmasını sağladı; ve sonunda, 14 metre
yüksekliğindeki versiyon yapılarak bienalin
düzenlendiği Giardini’nin girişinin önündeki lagüne
yerleştirildi.
In 1493, Leonardo da Vinci was finishing the
preparations for casting the equestrian monument
(four times life size), which Ludovico il Moro, Duke
of Milan commissioned in memory of his father
some 12 years earlier. In a workshop of the Corte
Vecchia in Milan, the giant clay form, the moulds,
supports and furnaces were ready, but war broke
out, the bronze was confiscated and the statue was
never made.
Leonardo had studied the procedure of fabrication
down to the last detail even going to the length of
drawing the iron armatüre, which was to hold the
ceramic moulds of the head and neck of the horse.
One of these plates inspired Yannick Vu and Ben
Jakober to imagine a three dimensional
interpretation, that was realized as the emblematic
sculpture of II Cavallo di Leonardo, for the 45th
Venice Biennial. There was first a small model in
metal, which was followed by a clay model that
finally allowed the CAD computer assisted drawings
to be made into the final 14 meter high version to
stand in the lagoon, in front of the entrance to the
Giardini, where the biennial was held.
Yannick Vu ve Ben Jakober started to work
together after their joint work for the
Venice Biennial in 1993. While Vu defines this
alliance as a form of maturity. Jakober sees it
complementary. The alliance not only
represents the two artists, but also the
fleeting union of male and female powers. It
is not about a confrontation between two
opposites but rather a dialogue between two
active forces, such as fertility and order,
telluric forces and the forces of the light, the
cult of the Sky. Vu and Jakober employ the
myth, which states the unchanging essence
of human nature and “ the magic intention
of art”. Through the collective psyche they
evoke the conflict-ridden territory of the
couple and transform it into creativity neither
male, nor female, but androgynous, at the
same time plural and unified.
