Today we live in a world where computing is moving beyond tablets and smartphones, to everyday objects around us; objects which are intelligent and connected to the cloud. A phenomenon we are calling the Internet of Things. While this new world of the Internet of Things is promising new opportunities for innovation and creativity, it is also exposing deep technical challenges which need to be surpassed. In this session the speakers will introduce some of the key research challenges hindering widespread adoption of IoT, along with research directions and approaches to address these. The speakers will introduce the challenges of prototyping and deploying IoT related technologies to collect data, and will provide a detailed view of the Microsoft Research Lab of Things, which is a research platform for deploying IoT technologies at scale for the purpose of research and prototyping. The talks will provide insight into some of the existing academic research projects using the Lab of Things to prototype and collect data. The session will also include introduction to some of the commercial IoT offerings from Microsoft which allow widespread deployment.

Siddha Ganju. Deep learning on mobile

Lviv Startup Club

Currently, Siddha is an Architect at Nvidia focusing on the Self-Driving initiative. She works towards stable and scalable training of neural networks on very large data centers, and utilizes simulation to validate the neural networks. In 2017 Siddha led NASA’s Long-Period Comets team within their AI accelerator, called Frontier Development Lab, where she used machine learning to develop meteor detectors. Recently this project was able to provide the first-ever instrumental evidence of an outburst of 5 meteors coming from a previously known comet, called C/1907 G1 (Grigg-Mellish). As a member of the NASA FDL AI Technical Committee, Siddha is working towards incorporating AI in many space science projects! Previously Siddha was a Deep Learning Data Scientist at Deep Vision where she worked on developing and deploying deep learning models on resource constraint edge devices. Siddha graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Master’s in Computational Data Science and a Bachelor’s in Computer Science and Technology from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Hamirpur, India. She has also authored a book on Practical Deep Learning for Cloud, Mobile & Edge – O’Reilly Publishers Speech Overview: Over the last few years, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have risen in popularity, especially in the area of computer vision. Many mobile applications running on smartphones and wearable devices would potentially benefit from the new opportunities enabled by deep learning techniques. However, CNN’s are by nature computationally and memory intensive, making them challenging to deploy on a mobile device. We explain how to practically bring the power of convolutional neural networks and deep learning to memory and power-constrained devices like smartphones and web browsers.

In this talk, we will explore how Uber enables rapid experimentation of machine learning models and optimization algorithms through the Uber’s Data Science Workbench (DSW). DSW covers a series of stages in data scientists’ workflow including data exploration, feature engineering, machine learning model training, testing and production deployment. DSW provides interactive notebooks for multiple languages with on-demand resource allocation and share their works through community features. It also has support for notebooks and intelligent applications backed by spark job servers. Deep learning applications based on TensorFlow and Torch can be brought into DSW smoothly where resources management is taken care of by the system. The environment in DSW is customizable where users can bring their own libraries and frameworks. Moreover, DSW provides support for Shiny and Python dashboards as well as many other in-house visualization and mapping tools. In the second part of this talk, we will explore the use cases where custom machine learning models developed in DSW are productionized within the platform. Uber applies Machine learning extensively to solve some hard problems. Some use cases include calculating the right prices for rides in over 600 cities and applying NLP technologies to customer feedbacks to offer safe rides and reduce support costs. We will look at various options evaluated for productionizing custom models (server based and serverless). We will also look at how DSW integrates into the larger Uber’s ML ecosystem, e.g. model/feature stores and other ML tools, to realize the vision of a complete ML platform for Uber.
