1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
2. DISTRIBUTORS
• Film distribution is the process of making a film available for viewing, to an audience.
This would typically be up-taken by a professional film distributor, who would establish
a marketing strategy for the film, eg whether or not they will produce it to a global, tent-
pole or local audience. This distributor may also set the release date and other
elements that go hand-in-hand with the movie distributing process. The film may be
displayed directly to the public either through cinema, television or personal home
viewing, for example DVD’s, video on-demand or downloaded content. Film distribution
is usually accompanied by film promotion, which would involve advertising and
essentials such as merchandise.
• When a film is initially produced, a feature film is often shown to audiences in a cinema.
Typically, one film is the main feature film people have paid to see. However there is
some content shown before the feature film, mainly involving previews for upcoming
movies and paid advertisements.
3. WARNER BROTHERS
• Warner brothers – equally known as Warner Bros, is a US entertainment company
and film distributor, that is a division of Time Warner and its headquarters are situated
in Burbank California. This company is one of Hollywood’s largest ’Big 6’ conglomerates
along with Disney, this means they have an exceedingly large budget with regards to
distributing their films.
• A few of the films Warner Brothers have distributed include:
• Warner Bros. Pictures is also a global leader in the marketing and
distribution of feature films, operating offices in more than 30
countries and releasing films in over 120 international territories,
directly to theatres. Meaning that they have very large global audiences, due to
this factor I feel as though this company both may not want to distribute my
film, along with them not being suitable to distribute my film because of their
involvement with such large blockbusters.
4. BULLDOG FILM DISTRIBUTION
• As apposed to large Hollywood companies, the far likelier option of getting my film
distributed would be through a far smaller scale company, such as Bulldog film
distribution. They are an independent UK film distributor who release films across all
platforms, therefore making it far more likely that they would even consider distributing
my film.
• Furthermore this particular company operate strictly in the UK, narrowing down the
content that they would administer, making my film a worthy contender, due to it being
that of a British nature.
5. BULLDOG FILM DISTRIBUTION
• A few examples of the type of small-scale films this industry previously distributed include:
Another film includes Mission London, a bawdy comedy genre published in April 2010.’ A
concert to celebrate Bulgaria joining the EU is being planned at the Embassy in London
and it is the job of VARADIN, the new ambassador, to ensure the Queen attends.’ the film
had a budget of €1,400,000 (estimated) and grossed at €2,579,516 (Bulgaria).
• ‘K-Shop is an urban horror set in a British Kebab Shop plagued by binge
drinking culture’, released in July 2016. this indie film was funded through
a website called Kickstarter, Kickstarter helps artists, musicians,
filmmakers, designers, and other creators find the resources and
support they need through the funding of anyone around the world
willing to donate money to a project. Over 160 people pledged £12,430
in order for this film to be produced and distributed and help bring this project to life on Kickstarter.
6. FILM 4
• film 4 are a similar enterprise to that of ‘Bulldog film distribution’ in the sense
that it favours British-based films and tv series, however it is on a slightly larger scale than
Bulldog, due to the fact that it has distributed profoundly popular films such as The
Inbetweeners movie, Attack the block and Four weddings and a funeral. The
Inbetweeners movie’s estimated budget was £3,500,000, which is a substantial amount of
money to base my film upon, however it is still possible that this distribution company
could possibly have an involvement with my film.
7. FUNDING
• There are many means in which a production company wishing to collect money in
order to successfully fund their film or tv series, can get their hands on it.
• The number one website for media specific funding methods is Kickstarter, the project
launched on April 28, 2009, in total $2,946,391,910 had been pledged to Kickstarter
projects, along with 121,922 projects have been successfully funded and there have
been a total of 12,632,368 backers. Most successfully funded projects raise less than
$10,000, but a growing number have reached six, seven, and even eight figures.
• Indiegogo is another website similar to Kickstarter in the sense that it is a crowdfunded
website, involving a method in which to distribute and marked different projects of all
types. $1B+ is the total amount that has been raised for projects and 11MM+
Contributions have backed 650k+ projects.
8. CONCLUSION
• in reality, out of the three distribution companies i have chosen to research, the most
likely to distribute my particular film would either be Bulldog or Film4, however Bulldog
would be more likely as it slightly smaller than Film4. They both fund smaller scale
enterprises.
• Film4 also offer funding to their producers which may be needed due to the limited
budget that i would have making this film.
