much music comes out on a

Well known
artists, as star
appeal will attract
people to buy the
magazine
Younger audience, 15-45.
As the majority of people
who listen to rap are of a
younger audience
I think the social status of the
target audience would be C1,
C2 and D as the higher social
status stereotypically wouldn’t
listen to rap/hip-hop so
therefore wouldn’t be
interested in the magazine.
Close or medium

Bold colours used
so magazine
stands out
Masthead next to each
page number, so readers
get familiar with the
masthead and therefore
the brand
A bold colour like red for
one magazine, and blue
for the other so the
magazine stands out on

Mainly white

reader doesn’t get
distracted from the
text, or find it
difficult to read.

I am going to choose anti and major for my two
magazines, I am choosing these as I think they
are the most memorable and will stand out the
most on the magazine masthead
5. Front Cover Analysis
Cover Lines: The cover
lines are along the side of
the front cover, they don’t
overlap the main image so
they are easy to read
against the white
background, the title of
the headlines are in bold
meaning they stand out,
inviting the reader in.
Main Headline:
The main headline
is the largest text
on the front cover,
this connotes to
the reader that it is
the most important
making them want
to read the article.
Also it is the only
text in a different
font and different
colour meaning it
stands out even
more
Main Image: The main
image is a long shot, this
means that the whole
artist is in the picture.
This is good as it means
as well as star appeal
there is also appeal to
the clothing which Is a
big part of rap and hip-
hop culture. People will
be attracted to the artist
and know the magazine
is current and cool by
the clothes they are
wearing.
Masthead: The
masthead is red, this
stands out against the
dull monochrome
colour of the rest, this
means readers will be
drawn to the masthead
making them remember
the brand
Barcode: The barcode is small and
placed in the corner, this is because
it isn't an important part of the
cover, it doesn’t draw people to buy
it, therefore it is placed in the
corner so the rest of the magazine
can be larger and draw people in to
buy the magazine.
6. Double page spread Analysis
The drop capital shows the
reader where the article
begins, this makes it a lot
easier for them to
navigate, as in some
articles the pages may be
very complex with several
columns. This is important
as if the reader finds it
easy to read they will find
it more enjoyable
Page number is in the bottom of every
page. This means the pages are
consistent, making it look professional.
It also means that the reader can easily
find pages by using the contents page
The title of the article is much
larger than all the other text on
the spread. This means the
readers eyes are drawn towards it
first, connoting that it is
important. It is only two words so
does not reveal much to the
reader, this makes them want to
read the article as they think that
it will be important and want to
find out the story behind the title. The image on this
spread takes up
an entire page,
this makes the
reader more
interested as they
have an image to
look at which
brings the text
alive rather than
having two full
pages of text
which may bore a
lot of people.
7. Genre of Magazine
The genre of XXL is rap/hip hop, I plan to repeat this genre in my
magazine (Steve Neale) for a number of reason. Firstly it is a market
rapidly growing, already with a massive fan base, this Is a massive
advantage as it means that there is less risk of the audience base
disappearing in a years time as it is growing rather than diminishing.
A connotation of the genre ‘hip-hop’ is that it is fun and interesting
because of the word ‘hip-hop’ being quite funny to say, also the word
‘hip’ means something which is cool, therefore people will think the
magazine is cool and be attracted to buy and read it.
8. Target Readership
Hartley’s Theory
Age: the age would be around 15-40 as most people between this age would be interested in current music which is
what my magazine will have, the majority of older people would be more interested in music from their time.
Gender: the target gender will be male, as my magazine is going to be rap/hip-hop which is mainly listened to by
males
Katz’s Theory
Inform and Educate: The reader will learn about what the artists are doing or what they are promoting in the
magazine.
Personal identification: The readers may relate to the artist or their stories if they are talking about having nothing
then working hard to gain fame, which may inspire people who have nothing to go out and make a name for
themselves.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
The audience for this theory I think would be caregivers as the people reading the magazine want to read the
articles about artists they like and sympathize with struggles they are having or something similar.
Socio-Economics
The majority of people buying the magazine would be from C1 or C2 as the magazine costs quite a lot for what it is
so lower classes may not be able to afford it. Also people of higher classes have a taste in different music like
classical which isn't covered in Q magazine
9. Style of magazine
Through research and inspiration I have chosen colours which I want to
feature on my magazine. I have decided on red as my primary colour
with white and black being the secondary and tertiary respectively.
To ensure the colour scheme is consistent throughout I will use the
eyedropper tool to create a swatch of the colours I'm using, which I can
continually reuse to make sure all colours are consistent
12. Spending Power
• The genre of my magazine is rap and hip-hop, because of this my audience
will be mid to low on the socio-economic scale as higher classes do not
listen to this genre so will not buy my magazine.
• Low classes are less likely to buy magazines as it is not an essential, so they
would save their money to buy things they need because they don’t have
much.
• This would mean that my target audience would be mainly mid class
people, around C1 and C2 as these would like the genre and be able to
afford magazines
• Therefore my audience would have quite a high spending power allowing
me to price my magazine at £2.99
13. Magazine Masthead
When I created my masthead I had to ensure that it could capture a
passing by audience as the magazine would be on a shelf where people
would walk by. Therefore I chose red as the main colour as it is bright,
therefore it stands out on the shelf attracting more people to pick it up
and buy. To go along with the bright masthead I chose a bold font to
make sure the name is readable from afar, this means the name and
brand will become recognisable and known.
32. Hand Drawn Drafts And Graphic layout
conclusion
I have decided to go with the first graphic layout for the front cover.
This is because it looks most like my magazine of inspiration, so I can
make my magazine look very similar to my inspiration.
33. Interview
• Hello, How are you?
• Hello, I’m very good thanks.
• So, your new album drops next week, how are you feeling about it?
• Pretty positive, I love it and I’m sure my fans will too.
• Any favourites you have from the album?
• Its hard to pick, in my opinion every song is amazing, plus they’re all my creations, choosing a favourite would be like choosing a favourite out of my kids!
• A lot of work has been put into this upcoming album, 5 years in total put into it, is it hard putting so much effort and time into one piece of work?
• Of course, especially when you don’t know if your fans are going to like it or not. But I really feel myself when I’m in the studio so to me it doesn’t really feel like a
job, but a way of life.
• You’re so passionate about music, Does this help when creating your own?
• Definitely, I have fun in the studio making beats and coming up with lyrics, it really doesn’t feel like a job to me at all.
• As well as your new album, you are also going on tour starting next week, Are you Excited?
• Of course! I love being on tour, meeting my fans around the world
• What’s your favourite place to go on tour?
• London, it’s the place I grew up and the atmosphere you get there is like none other. But I do love going to places like New York and seeing that I have such big
support in the US as well as England
• Any necessities you need on tour?
• I wouldn’t say I have any material necessities, but I definitely need my friends with me, we always have a good time touring the world, and dancing on stage
together.
• What everyone wants to know, who is going on tour with you?
• Well I can’t release any information yet, but I can say there’s going to be some surprise appearances from big artists.
• That’s all the questions, thanks for your time
• Its been a pleasure

Human Resources (3) £23,000 per year

42. Advertising revenue
• In my magazine I'm going to have 10 full page
advertisements, this means that I’m going to make
£30,250 (10 x £3025)
• I'm also going to have 5 half page advertisements, this
means I'm going to make £7560 (5 x £1512)
• So altogether from advertisements I'm going to make
£37,810 (£30,250 + £7560)
43. Printing costs
• I am going to print 20,000 copies of the magazine,
this is not a very large number but it is my first
printing of the magazine so it is enough magazines to
get an idea of whether or not it is going to sell. And
how many copies I need to print of the next issue. My
magazine has 28 pages, and a front and back page, to
print a magazine of this size it will cost £1903.76
altogether
45. Launch Date
• My Magazine will be released on the 23rd of November 2016
• The reasoning for this is because nothing else will be going
on in November that will detract any attention from the
launch. This therefore means that I can reach the most
amount of target customers as possible and make as much
money as possible.

49. IPSO Editors Code of Practice: Link to My
magazine
The IPSO codes of practices link to my magazine as I will have to ensure
that I stay within all of the guidelines they set. Failing to do so can
result in a number of issues, all of which leading to a bad image and
loss of money. One thing that can happen is the magazine can be
recalled, meaning no sales will be made on all the magazines printed,
therefore wasting a lot of money and time. Another outcome can be
getting sued, this will make further loss of money which for a new
company would be very hard to pay off and still run. This highlights the
importance for me to abide by the rules.
50. Legal and Ethical
• ASA: The ASA is the Advertising standards
authority, they have rules and guidelines that
must be followed by advertisers, There is 22
in total.
• Rule 3 is important for my magazine as I
must ensure all advertising is accurate and
truthful otherwise I can face large economic
sanctions.
• Another important guideline is privacy, as in
my magazine it will feature many artists and
famous people so I must make sure that I
follow the guidelines on what I can and
cannot say in relation to their privacy.
https://www.asa.org.uk/codes-and-rulings/advertising-codes/non-broadcast-code.html
51. Regulatory Issues
Content which is copyrighted is known as intellectual property. This
property is legally protected from theft. Intellectual property can be on
print and digitally, companies can get a digital watermark which
signifies that the property is protected, therefore it makes sure it is safe
from theft, As for someone to use copyrighted material they must pay
for it, or ask for permission, they cannot just take it and use it as they
please. The most effective way of protecting property is through getting
a patent, as this means products cannot be made which copy the
property or steal any of it. This is hard to do though as it takes several
years to obtain, and costs up to $7000 in fees, which is a large
investment for a company to pay.
52. Regulatory Issues continued
The data protection act is an act introduced in 1998. The act means
that businesses must follow the ‘data protection principles’ when
holding information regarding customers. They must ensure
information is kept secure and safe, used for a stated purpose which is
fair and lawful and not kept for any longer than is absolutely necessary.
https://www.gov.uk/data-protection/the-data-protection-act
53. Feedback of pitch – Survey Monkey
• Survey monkey is a website which you can sign up to for free. It
allows you to create surveys filled with different questions, such as
multiple choice or with boxes allowing the person to write anything
they want.
• I used survey monkey to collect results about my magazines and pitch
presentation.
54. Survey Monkey Results
• My first question was “what do you think I can do to
improve my pitch?” the majority of respondents said
that I needed to learn my script off by heart, I agreed
with this as because I did not know my script off by
heart it meant I could not look at the audience,
instead I had to look at my script, this made me look
less confident.
• My second question was “did my magazine look
professional?” out of all the people asked 100% said
yes, this is good as it means my magazine was to the
standard that it needed to be.
• I then asked what I could do to improve my magazine.
Most responses were telling me that I needed to add
more details, and more cover lines in order to fill
some dead space that I had.
55. Feedback of Pitch
This is my witness statement, highlighted in green is the elements I did well, and in yellow is
what I need to improve, there is also a list of what I did well and, what I need to do to improve
it, this gives me exact steps on what I need to do in order to improve my work. The positives
were that my magazine was created to a professional level, I communicated expected areas in
some detail and all my pre-production materials were fit for purpose, as well as many aspects
being creative. The things I needed to improve was minor issues with the front cover and DPS,
also I need to add more detail to my production plan
