It is not unknown for a student to fail to complete a homework assignment, after all there
is so much more to do than just homework. Many things keep students from finishing, or
sometimes even doing, homework but procrastination coupled with the lack of reasonable
planning is the major factor as to why it doesn’t get done. Good study habits demand that
you work to eliminate these problems. Here I present eight guidelines for effective
homework for students to follow once they get serious about learning.

Write Down all Your Assignments
Memory is a tricky thing. The very worst evidence against a person accused of a crime is
the eye witness who must rely on memory. Now some people have a photographic
memory, but they are few and far between. Most of us need reminders of things to do so
people make things like to do lists, shopping lists, anniversary lists and birthday lists to
remind them of important events and things they must do.

Homework assignments not written down are homework assignments that are forgotten
or the details are fuzzy and misinterpreted. Writing down the assignment, including the
details of the assignment and the date it is due is a sure fire antidote for the tricky
memory.

Estimate how much time you must allot to the Task
Some assignments are due the next day, some in a week or two weeks or maybe even in a
month. If an assignment is due tomorrow then it makes sense to get right to it, get it out
of the way. But, say the assignment is due in a weeks’ time and you estimate that it will
take 5 hours to complete. You are then ready for the next step.

Determine your available Time
Your assignment is due next week, in seven days. You have a part time job after school
that takes four hours of your time every Monday, Wednesday and Friday as well as six
hours on Saturday. That is 18 hours taken out of the time available to do homework. An
additional two hours are taken up by travel to and from school and your job and you need
at least an hour a day to eat dinner. Let’s say that leaves you with six hours of free time
every day to squeeze in homework and social time.

Prioritize your Assignments by Due Date
Yep, do the ones due immediately first but don’t fail to work on the assignments that are
due in the near future as well. By prioritizing your assignments you make sure that they
all get done on time every time.

Break your homework time into Workable Segments
Lawyers do it, accountants do it, in fact anyone working on a clock does it. They divide
the hour into workable segments. Lawyers and accountants do it in 20% segments or 12
minute time slots. I like that for homework because it builds in a 12 minute break every
hour you are working. You can also decide that you are going to assign units of time
instead of minutes of time, four units somehow feels shorter than 48 minutes.

Schedule Regular Breaks
I already mentioned that the unit concept leaves room for scheduled 12 minute breaks
every hour. Make sure you take them. They not only help maintain sanity, your work
will be better for it.

Stick to your Plan!
Once you make a plan, stick to it. No matter what happens, stick to the plan. Oh, I guess
you could make an exception for an earthquake or tornado but, in the absence of some
kind of natural disaster over which you have no control, do not alter your plan without
making alternate plans.

Share the Plan with someone Responsible
Students through high school should share their plan with their parents or guardians. I
mean, lets fact the facts. If something more attractive than doing math homework, most
normal kids will jump at the opportunity. By sharing your plan with a responsible adult
you have someone there who will call you out when they think you are trying to escape
your responsibility. Let them! It will help you stay on the proper path for success.

There are, naturally, some benefits to setting up a homework plan. Not the least of these
benefits include the ability to learn a skill that you will use for the rest of your life, the
skill of personal time management. More immediately, however, making and using a
homework plan represents good study habits and is a step toward assuring success in
school which is a stepping stone to success in life.
