Open Education in Jordan

Roots of Online Open Education in Jordan
• The University of Jordan provided free and open e-
learning courses that can be found without logging into
their Moodle e-learning platform, released on 2010.
• The Jordan Open Source Association successfully
proposed an Arabic Open Educational Resources
Platform which was originally due to be launched in June
2011.
• A MOOC platform was agreed for launch in November
2013 as part of Queen Rania Al Abdullah’s initiatives
under The Queen Rania Foundation.

Open Education in Jordan
• The vision of Open Education in Jordan started based on the
notion that Open Educational Resources (OER) offer
opportunities for systemic change in teaching and learning
through accessible content.
• Through a blended model of teacher-led knowledge and
student-centered sharing processes, most Jordanian
universities developed structures for sharing, accessing and
bringing participants into a more fair level in learning.

OER Movement
‘Open Jordan’ Summit (2014) was the first dedicated event in
Jordan to promote openness for the good of the Jordanian
society and highlighted local initiatives based on collaborative
authoring, crowdfunding and crowdsourcing especially for
educational projects.

Current Challenges of OER
• Regulations and instructions on
institutional and national level.
MOHE approved the blended
model within 25% of program, yet
an alliance of 3 or more Jordanian
universities can establish a fully
online program as well.
• Quality Assurance (QA) constraints:
exams, measurement of learning
outcomes, funding and cultural
perception.

Center Overview
• Establishing new strategies to foster creativity in learning.

at PSUT.

many disciplines, and to promote the OER tools, method
and applications.
• In addition, the center aims to develop the regulatory
function of online learning, game-based learning,
collaborative working and off-campus open resources.

• The role of Instructional Design:
Optimization of learning resources.
• Two strategy approaches of game-based
and online-based sessions (blended) – with
the usage of virtual labs, VR, MOOCs and
AR applications
• Ultimately: PSUT to develop its own
Learning Management System (LMS)

Current and Future Trends for the Center
• To reinforce the effectiveness of our programs: we
will have more board members from market and
industry to evaluate the content of PSUT online
courses and their match-percentage with business
needs + expanding partnerships with leading
multimedia pioneers like YouTube, Vimeo,
Netsupport.
• Continuous support of OER and use them to help
reducing the gap between theory and practice;
academia and business.
