2. He was born on 14 November 1840 in
Paris (France).
3. Monet joined the France army in Algeria for two years from 1860-1862. When he
became ill he left the army to study art at university. He didn´t like the way art wash
taught, and joined the painter Charles Gleire in his studio. He met other artists here,
including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley.
In 1845 his family moved to Normandy. His father wanted him to go into the family
grocery business, but Monet wanted to become an artist. His mother was a singer.
When Monet travelled to Paris to visit the Louvre museum, he saw painters copying
from the old masters. He was famous for his impressionism.
