and Ms. B contacted me to help you out in your Public

Now you are ready to select your message topic!

I only have four major pointers for you to
remember in selecting your speech topic – the
4Ks tospeech selection:
1. Keep itsimple.
2. Knowyour audience.
3. Knowthe occasion.
4. Knowthe message purpose.
There are three main purposes of a speech, let us get to know them:
informing
persuading
ritualizing
When doing an informative speech presentation, you can use four ways to achieve this purpose. The first
is trying to clarify information.

DEMONSTRA
There are three main purposes of a speech, let us get to know them:
informing
persuading
ritualizing
Some people think that persuasion is inducing others to change or as winning by some power or force.
Others choose to view persuasion as creating satisfaction or reinforcing assurance in the mind of the
listener. When you want to persuade, there arethree basic assumptions at work:
Assumption 11
The audienceis already informed about thespeech subject
Assumption 2
Thesubject of the speech is a debatable issue.
Assumption 3
There is a good chance that the audience may hold a different view, concerning the subject, from
that of a speaker.
There are three main purposes of a speech, let us get to know them:
informing
persuading
ritualizing
When you ritualize, you will find that the occasion dictates what kind of speech should be used. Ritual
speeches areoften doneto entertain audiences. They can either beany of the following:
1. After-dinner speech
2. Goodwill speech
3. Ceremonial speech
4. Courtesy Speeches
a. Speech of Introduction
b. Speech of Presentation
c. Speech of Acceptance
d. Speech of Welcome
e. Speech of Response to a Welcome
f. Speech of Farewell
5. Dedication Speech
6. Commemorative Speech
7. Anniversary Address
8. Eulogy
9. Speech of Nomination
This part is as hard as preparing yourself to speak in a large group as this room – preparing the speech
itself. You now get a pen and paper, and put all your thoughts and researches down into the right words.
You arenow ready to plan your speechmessage into anorganized, outlined structure.

introducing your speech. What arethese techniques? Let’s proceed!

“Only as high as I reach can I grow,
only as far asI seek can I go, only as
deep as I lookcan I see, only as much
as I dream can I be.”
- KarenRavn
I was walking down life’s highway a long time ago. One day, I saw a sign which reads, HEAVEN’S GROCERY
STORE. As I got a little closer, the door opened wide. And when I came to myself, I was standing inside. I saw a
host ofangels; they were standing everywhere. One handed mea basket andsaid,“mychild, shop with care.”
Everything a person needed was in that grocery store. If you couldn’t carry all the goods you like, you could
come back the next day. First I got some patience; love. Farther down was Understanding. You need that
everywhere you go. Igot a boxor twoofwisdom anda bag or twooffaith. Igotsome strength and But then my
basket was getting full, but I remembered, I needed some grace. Then I started towards the counter to pay my
grocery bill. As I went out the aisle, I saw a prayer and I just had to put it in. Peace and joy were plentiful. They
were on the last shelf. Songs and praises were hanging near so I just helped myself. Then I said to the angel,
“Howmuch doIowe you?”
The angel smiled andsaid, “Justtake them wherever you go”.
Then Isaidto the angel,“Howmuch doIreally owe you?
The angel smiled again andsaid,“God paidyourbill a long time ago.”

developing the body of the
speechYour objective in this part is to
structure your message so the ideas
follow a sequence.
Organizational structures can help you sequence your
ideas in an easy, logical and coherent manner. I’ll give
you anoverview of them as weproceed!

Historical
Problem – Solution
Logical –
Thisclassificationisarranged from
the most important – least
important or vice versa.
It follows a time sequence, based
on a piece of information that
happened first, second, so on.
You view your subject as the
problem, and consider a possible
solution the problem
This takes each main idea of the
speech as the causeand you go on
demonstrating the effects.
This pattern is effective for
speeches to inform through
explainingand demonstrating. It is
commonly known as partofthe

This is a customized, open pattern.
You design you own based on
your chosen approach to the topic.
concluding the
speechThere are valuablepurposes ofconclusion in a speech, such as:
• Second chances.
• Review
• Pullingit all up!
• Thank you.
Youcan end yourspeech using the same creative speech techniquesI showed you a while ago.
Rememberthat they haveto beappropriate.
Divide your conclusion intotwo parts:
Part 1 – brief summary of the main
ideas you presented in the body of
speech.
Part 2 – Audience impact: the final
moment of spoken words make the
greatest impact on us once presentation is over so a
good conclusionis extremely important.
It’s time to write your own speech. Yes, I know – a spark
ignites inside that superb head of yours. Ideas come
rushing in, and it overwhelms you that you don’t know
where and how to start. I’m here to help you sort things
out! Let’s start withthebasics to getyou going:

Writing your Speech:

will do. You can always add/improve it later.)
Creative Technique used: ________________________________________
5. Now we’re getting the ball rolling! What organizational structure areyou planning touse in presenting your ideas
in the body of your speech?State them here:
Ideal Organizational Structure: _______________________________________________
