Why People Change Behavior changes in response to a positive emotional connection to what could be.
Understanding People
Decisions Decisions… It is common sense to take a method and try it: If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something." “ You have to keep making decisions when you're climbing, even if they are bad decisions. If you stop making decisions, you're dead.”

Personal Effectiveness

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Let’s talk about effectiveness, specifically: methods, strategies and tips that will help you be more personally effective Principles can also apply in all areas of your life Effectiveness Key Points: Begin with the end in mind Align your thoughts and behaviors toward your goal i.e Make Choices Choices not only about our behaviors, but about our thoughts/perceptions Evaluate and adapt as necessary
  2. Why you should care You tell me. I assume you’re all here at Library Camp to become better librarians. But I don’t want to assume anything. Why are you here? What did you hope to get out of this experience today Why I care Life is short (Hohokam) I want to use my time here to make a difference I want to be awake and fully present Enrich my life and the lives of those around me. Example of Sarcasm
  3. OK, before we dive in, let’s set the stage a bit. I was at the DMV inspection station with my wife’s car got up early, crack of dawn Waiting in line, and as I pull up, this is what I see: [NEXT SLIDE]
  4. Granted it was early I hadn’t had coffee yet But my brain was seriously fritzing out trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. Justice Potter stewart famously remarked on porography , “hard to define but I know it when I see it.” Kind of like ineffectiveness. Ineffectiveness: You know it when you see it… So that’s ineffectiveness. What does it mean to be effective?
  5. But let’s try to define it: What does it mean to be effective? Flip chart answers from Group Or just repeat Let’s try this as a working definition
  6. Effectiveness: Bringing about the change you desire
  7. Bringing about the change you desire By beginning with the end in mind
  8. To be Effective is to Bring About the Change you desire by Beginning with the end in mind And aligning all your actions toward that goal (choices) A simple Model: Envision/Goal Set: Get clear on what you want Review: Think about what you have already done to get what you want. What worked? What didn’t Generate options. What choices can you make now. What CAN you do. Decide: Make Decisions: Decide on an action (what will you do) Act: Do it. 9. Evaluate whether or not it worked, and adapt as necessary Repeat: Go back to 1. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ralphandjenny/4612732045/sizes/z/in/photostream/
  10. There are some challenges to making good choices consistently We have control over one thing: Our choices. But… Often we make choices with little investment of thought. We don’t begin with end in mind (and work backward) We don’t generate options We are blinded to good options because we lack self-awareness
  11. Make MORE choices, means more mistakes. Reframe mistakes as data. As learning We tend to tell ourselves two stories We are the hero We are the victim NEW STORY---- We are the learners. There is nothing but learning. WHAT CAN I LEARN FROM THIS WHAT WILL I CHOOOSE NOW?
  12. Importance of self-awareness (personality) If we don’t know ourselves, we don’t know our biases, blind spots We make choices from a smaller pool of options that actually exist We make choices that are not helpful or appropriate. Self-awareness is uber important. Highly recommend enneagram or Myers briggs. Why? because it helps us become aware of self-imposed limitations. The first step in making choices is assessing the situation. Gathering data <insert example>. But we tend to over-focus on certain data, and be blind to other data <insert enneagram examples> So we invest some time in becoming self-aware. We learn to see more. We are therefore able to generate a wider range of choices, and choose to invest energy in making choices that are appropriate for the situation--that have the most promise--even if they are not easy or natural for us <insert examples of a one, seeing gray; a two, taking care of themselves; a three, slowing down; a four, releasing the need for drama, etc.> Personality profiles help us see that we over-rely on certain ways of looking at things, which leads to an over-reliance on certain choices. 15. Which Chicken are you? talk about motivations. Why did the chicken cross the road? because: it’s the right thing to do (fail to see gray areas) to help others (fail to take care of self) It was this week’s goal (fail relate emotionally) It was an authentic expression of myself (fail to do needed, if not exciting, tasks) To get some alone time to think. (fail to engage with others) They didn’t—not sure it’s safe to cross (fail to take action) For the exciting new adventure! (fail to slow down and make thoughtful decisions. Commitment) To gain a strategic edge over the other flock and protect my own (fail to negotiate, see others points of view) To broker a peace deal. (fail to prioritize, see important distinctions) Which Chicken are you?
  16. Which Chicken are you? talk about motivations. Based on Enneagram Personality System Enneagram is a useful map. A metaphor. Describes energies. Describes our filter, our worldview. It gives us a map to other choices, other roads. Into other cultures, how others see things and communicate. And when we know those roads exist, those other territories, those other ways of communicating, it increases our effectiveness. The same way a map that lets us know that we just crossed into mexico tells us that speaking Spanish might now be more effective way of communicating. That values are different Perceptions– how we organize reality is different (for instance experience of time is different). That VALUES are different. Stop and think about that: Literally what we value as people is radically different… Go thru diff. types.
  17. OK, so we’ve discussed how valuable it is to spend some time cultivating self-awareness. This expands your choices in the moment Review that model again Pretty Simple Right??? So how come more us aren’t doing this consistently?
  18. I think one missing piece that leads to greater success is having a practice of continual evaluation We forget to revisit our goals and see if our thoughts/actions are aligned. We Forget to evaluate whether our choices are moving us forward. We lose focus. Let me tell you what I mean by a practice of continual evaluation
  19. Let me tell you what I mean by continual evaluation Asking these questions Consistently Adapting as necessary. What’s working What’s not working What can I do differently? One of my goals today is to help you see the value of consistently asking yourself these questions, so that you will begin asking it on a regular basis.
  20. I believe, and it is my experience, that if you develop the habit of asking this “What is my goal, and are my thoughts/actions aligned with it? You will more frequently bring about the conditions you desire Use less energy too do so More easily create the changes you want to see in your organizations More easily create the changes you want to see in your lives The challenge is to find a way to remember . To ritualize the behavior of evaluation To repeat the behavior until it becomes a habit Find a way that works for you QUESTION: WHAT HAS WORKED FOR YOU? How do you remember? Answer : I set reminders on Google calendar and tape things to my bulletin board

  26. Coaching is so effective because There is someone to hold you accountable to what you say you will do Someone to help you generate ideas A regular (usually weekly) schedule. We’ll come back to this…
  27. So far we’ve been talking about making choices that are effective for you But we interact with other people and much of being effective is about learning how to interact effectively with others. When we are effective with others we bring about a change. A change in Behavior Thought Feeling
  28. And one of the interesting things about being human is how two people can see the same thing very differently. Perspective is worth
  29. 80 IQ Points!
  30. Here’s a comparison So… We remember to ask “What is my goal ” AND We remember that people can see things very differently We filter based on our worldview and motivation We focus based on our worldview and motivation If you can make a decent guess at how they see things and what they value, you’ll be more effective Value of personality Profiles Know your go-to focus and communication style Adjust as necessary Helps you answer the question, “What’s in it for them.” because the answer depends on…
  31. To be effective with other people it’s helpful if you can tune in to their radio station: WWW-FM But to know what’s in it for them, (or to make a good guess at it) you need to know who them is. And again, personality profile systems can be very useful So to revisit our fowl feathered friends…
  32. Which Chicken are THEY? talk about motivations. Appeal to a shared standard of right/wrong or excellence Appeal to how it will help people Appeal to how this will advance a goal that is important to them or add to appearance of success. 34. What are you tolerating? What do you want? What is possible? What is exciting to you about this? How does it look to you? How do you feel about it? Can you say more about that? What other ideas/thoughts/feelings do you have about that? How does this fit with what you want in your life? What happened? What meaning are you giving to what happened? What would it look like if…? What are some other ways of looking at this? What have you tried? What else can you try? What can you do? What will you do? When will you do it? What support do you need? What is there to be learned from this? What happens if you do? What happens if you don’t? What is your preferred outcome? In the big picture, how important is this? Where will this choice lead? What more do you need to know before you decide? What’s stopping you?

  36. Since being effective with others is ultimately about bringing about a change in (feeling, thought or belief) It’s helpful to understand a bit about what motivates people to change (or not change) Look at these two posters The on the left says “smoking kills” The one on the right says “more doctors smoke camels” Take a guess—just for fun: How effective do you think this one (smoking kills is) Howe effective do you think this one is (doctors smoke) Here’s the mind-blower: research suggests that they are equally effective: in stimulating a desire to smoke!
  37. Each subject lay in the scanner for about an hour while we projected on a small screen a series of cigarette package labels from various countries — including statements like “smoking kills” and “smoking causes fatal lung cancers.” We found that the warnings prompted no blood flow to the amygdala , the part of the brain that registers alarm, or to the part of the cortex that would be involved in any effort to register disapproval. To the contrary, the warning labels backfired : they stimulated (you guessed it) the nucleus accumbens , sometimes called the “craving spot,” which lights up on f.M.R.I. whenever a person craves something, whether it’s alcohol, drugs, tobacco or gambling. study has already revealed an unintended consequence of antismoking health warnings. They appear to work mainly as a marketing tool to keep smokers smoking.
  38. "Change or Die": By Alan Deutschman. Statistics don't motivate people to change. Warning don’t motivate Deutschman studied people who were facing death unless they changed to a more healthy life style (morbid obesity, heart problems.) He found that 9 out of ten will not change their lifestyle after coronary bypass or angioplasty surgery-even if their life depends on it. Amazingly, people won't even keep taking a pill which has a good chance of saving their life. A study of 37,000 patients who were prescribed statins found that nearly everyone took the pills for a month or two, Deutschman relates, but by the third month about half had stopped, and one year later only "one fifth to one third" were still taking the statins, "which they were supposed to keep taking for the rest of their lives.“ Facts and fear no matter how sound, don't work People with severe heart problems don't respond to statistics or fear. They respond to positive emotional motivation. This is internal
  39. Four other books I highly recommend Predictably Irrational (how we make choices) Made to Stick (how we remember) Switch (change management) Drive (motivation)
  40. In Conclusion… FDR: It is common sense to take a method and try it: If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.“ Joe Simpson: “You have to keep making decisions when you're climbing, even if they are bad decisions. If you stop making decisions, you're dead.”
