Many of us who have
learned English know
that it is important to
practice a new language
in with a native speaker;
these types of conversa-
tions help to increase our
fluency and pronuncia-
tion. We hope to see you
soon as a part of our Eng-

BACK TO SCHOOL
Learning English with a na-
tive English teachers at the
Phoenix English Center has
made me acquainted with
the native speaker's voice,
tone and pronunciation.
Teachers not only help us
find effective learning
methods but also enthusias-
tically answer questions
throughout the learning
process. I am now much
more confident in commu-
nicating with foreigners.
Our English thinking and
reflexes are also quicker
and we have made signifi-
cant progress in all the four
skills of language, Listen-

STORIES
Last Saturday morning, I went to the dentist to get my braces off my teeth. I was thrilled the day before
because I wondered how my teeth had changed in 2 years. When I got into the white, bright dentist
room, my Mom & Dad were taking pictures of me to show the before and after effects. The dentist
confidently took off my braces with dental pliers, I couldn’t feel a thing because she was gentle like a
surgeon. She removed all of my braces in about 5 minutes but she then spent an hour cleaning and
polishing my teeth to get off the bonding cement. I expected it would be easy for them to take off my
braces because I’d seen them do it before, but I didn’t expect them to give me candy. I was overjoyed
when she gave me pop rocks from the US. Pop rocks are multi colored candy that pops in your mouth
when they get wet. After that, she put something similar to gum into a mouth guard and then I had to
bite into it for 30 seconds to make a mould for my retainer. She then gave me a mirror and let me look
at my teeth before putting on my retainer. My teeth looked very shiny and straight, so before we left
they took pictures inside & outside my mouth to show the difference before and after, because they
wanted to post it on Facebook to show their good work. My mouth felt a lot smoother and I was glad
that my lips were not getting stuck to my braces, I am very happy with the results.

My favorite drink is milk tea, I have been a fan of it for a long time so I know a lot of flavors , such as
sweet milky tea, salted cream tea and fruit milk tea. I think I have been drinking milk tea for about 4
years, I started drinking it when I was 9 years old. When I was 5 years old, I lived with my grand-
mother so I usually drank tea with her, and I began to love tea. My grandmother said that drinking milk
would make me taller so I started drinking more milk in grades 6 & 7, now I love milk and usually drink
it every day. When I drink milk tea I feel very happy and love life. I drink a lot of flavors in many milk
tea shops around the city, but my favorite flavor is green tea and my favorite milk tea shop is Gong
Cha in Nguyen Hue Street. It tastes good because in Gong Cha they make it very carefully so it’s very
good. My parents are worried because I might get fat from too much milk tea and have a risk of sugar
addiction so I limit my intake. Even so, I want to drink milk tea every day, I love it.

At 3pm last Thursday, Ms. Chau told me there would be no school on Friday because a storm was coming. I
felt very happy & excited, it was raining a lot at that time and I had to call my parents to pick me up. The
school emailed my Mom but she didn’t know because she hadn’t read the email. When I called her, she was
surprised because it wasn’t 4pm yet. On the way home, everywhere was closed, some cars and motorbikes
sped home before the storm. I was wet when I got home but I was still happy because I had a day off school
the next day. The electricity cut off at 5pm for about 20 minutes but then it came back on so I kept playing
with my computer until 7pm. I could hear the rain, it was really loud hitting the roof tiles like a man hitting a
drum. It made me think that it could flood the next morning, but the next day when I woke up, it had stopped.

My favorite place to travel in Viet-
nam is Vinpearland Nha Trang. Nha
Trang is a city in Southern Vietnam
with a lot of beautiful white beaches.
It has a small island called Hòn Tre,
which has a theme park on it called
Vinpearland. I like to go there be-
cause it has a lot of fun and exciting
things to do. My favorite activity was
swimming, because the water was
fresh, cool and clear, and the
weather was pretty hot. Also, I en-
joyed the 4D cinema, it was really
fun & exciting. It was so much fun
there that my family & I stayed from
morning until evening. I am looking
forward to going to Nha Trang again
in the future.

This is my first year at Phoenix School. At first, I felt very
lonely because I had no friends. However, in a short time I
have become acquainted with many friends. My teachers
and friends treated me very well. Tyler is my best friend. I
love this school because it is like my second home.

Grade 6 are currently reading Dogsong by
Gary Paulsen, a sequel to Hatchet that the
class read last year. They have made some
character profiles for the two main
characters, Oogruk and Russel. The story is
set in Alaska and follows the lifes of the Eskimo
characters, who still live traditional lifestyles in
Alaska.
Russel is a young boy who
lives with his Dad only, be-
cause his Mom went Outside
of his village. He talks to Oog-
ruk because he wants some
answers about the history of
his
culture.
Shawnee
Oogruk is an old man
who lives by himself, he
made the village with his
friends. He uses tradi-
tional weapons like bows
and spears to hunt. Rus-
sel wants to ask him
questions because he’s
the wisest in the village.
