5. Research questions What are student's perceptions of using Twitter in an online course? [Quantitative + Qualitative] What are the different perceptions of social presence between students who use Twitter and those who don't? [Quantitative + Qualitative]
8. Phase 1 results “Twitter has been a great way for me to check in with everyone who is using it. I found out how other’s were feeling about school, how life was treating them, how their jobs and families were doing. This is something much more intimate than mandatory weekly discussions...”

22. Connected to peers What was the least effective at helping you feel connected to your peers? • Twitter, don't get it or understand why to keep people up to date when I am working… • The Twitter …I think it is good to know who your classmates are but to know what they are doing every minute is not interesting to me. • I don't use or get twitter at all. I think its lame.

24. Phase 3 plan Complete interviews in Summer of 2010 Four students with high SP scores, four students with low SP scores Sample questions: 3. In an online course, how important do you think feeling connected to your instructor is as well as getting a sense that your instructor is "there" and "real"? Why? What types of technologies and learning activities help? 4. 25. Discussion Preliminary results are different for Phase Two than Phase One Need to spend more time helping students “Get it” Must recognize it might not be a good “fit” for all People form strong feelings about Twitter before ever using it Low tech solutions might be a better alternative
26. Conclusion More data needed Where to invest time and energy Variety is the spice of life

Did you create a Twitter account and participate in Twitter during the course?A created an account but I didn't sign in very oftenI did and I hate it.yes but never used it.No.NoPlease explain why you did or did not participate in Twitter.Don't have a smart phone and it was hard to follow Tweets at work/home - not always "connected"I understand the importance of social networking but I'm on the computer all day, and doing my coursework in the evening. As a result, I'm sick of electronic correspondence in any fashion.I really do not have the time and i am not sure i get the significance of it.I don't care for twitter, I created an account before the course.I don't have an interest in Twitter. I think it can be useful for very specific circumstances but it just doesn't fit my personality type!If applicable, in what ways did Twitter (or the Twitter feeds posted in the course shell) help you feel connected to the instructor(s) of the course?N/ANo.NA, did not use TwitterNAI did not use Twitter
Pick the previous activity that you thought was the least effective and explain why it failed to help you feel connected to your instructor(s).Twitter - I like the idea of using it but we didn't use it much.Twitter since I had never used Twitter and I believe it is limiting to the number of charactersI will have to say the twitter stuff. I personally did not have much time to explore what benefit there could be in it.The Twitter activity was least effective I thought. I don't see how knowing what my instructor or other classmates are doing with their leisure time helps me learn.I hate twitter. I also thought that the weekly summaries of what the instructor did with her family did not help me to establish a connection with her. My interest in the instructor is primarily professional/intellectual. She has a lot of experience and knowledge in my area of interest. We're all in such different places outside of the classroom.twitter- ididnt sign up and use it.Again I'm picking 2 things and it's purely on my personality preferences or lack of preferences. I have never gotten into Twitter and it's never gained my interest at all so I didn't look at anything on Twitter. Also, I didn't feel the video announcements helped me to feel any more connected to my instructors. If there's important general information that I need, then I just like a quick email or written post. I get easily distracted and watching a 3-5 min video announcement I probably miss the main point initially and have to watch it again because I got distracted at some point. Again, these are just because of my personality type I think!Twitter was least effective because I did not participate.Twitter - I prefer not to use Twitter (no time to keep up with it in a timely manner)Although some of the twitter posts about learning opportunities seemed like great things to take part in, my full time schedule didn't allow me to take part in these activities.I was unfortunately too busy to get involved in the Twitter activity. I did sign up for an account, but since I was taking 2 classes and working full-time, I just was unable to find the time to read what others were writing. I do think Twitter could help with connecting to the instructor. One of my concerns with social networking is the lack of privacy. Knowing that my word are on the Internet, kills my freedom of expression. I will be job-hunting within the next 8-months and am very worried about Human Resources recruiters being able to read what I have written online for school.
