Agnes was a member of the Roman nobility, born
in AD 291 and raised in an early Christian family.
She suffered martyrdom at the age of twelve or thirteen during
the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian, on 21 January 304
Agnes had many
suitors of high
rank, and the
young men,
slighted by her
resolute devotion
to religious purity,
submitted her
name to the
pagan authorities
as a follower of
Christianity
The Prefect Sempronius condemned Agnes to be dragged through the streets.
In one account, as she prayed, her hair grew and covered her body. It was also
said that all of the men that approached her were immediately struck blind.
The son of the prefect was struck dead but revived after she prayed for him, causing her release.
She was brought to trial and sentenced to death.
She was led out and bound to a stake, but the bundle of
wood would not burn, or the flames parted away from her,
the officer in charge drew his sword and beheaded her, or
stabbed her in the throat. It is also said that her blood poured to
the stadium floor where other Christians soaked it up with cloths
The martyrdom of Agnes in the Roman forum
Agnes was buried beside the Via Nomentana in Rome.
A few days after her death, her foster-sister, Emerentiana, was found praying
by her tomb; she claimed to be the daughter of Agnes' wet nurse, and was
stoned to death after refusing to leave the place and reprimanding the
people for killing her foster-sister. Emerentiana was also later canonized.
The daughter of Constantine I, Constantina, was said to
have been cured of leprosy after praying at Agnes' tomb.
Agnes was venerated
as a saint at least as
early as the time of
St Ambrose, based on
an existing homily.
She is commemorated
in the Depositio
Martyrum of Filocalus
(354) and in the early
Roman Sacramentaries
Saint Agnes' bones are conserved beneath the high
altar in the church of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura in
Rome, built over the catacomb that housed her tomb.
Her skull is preserved in a separate chapel in the church
of Sant'Agnese in Agone in Rome's Piazza Navona
Sources of information about Agnes
1- St. Ambrose, De Virginibus, I, 2;
2 - the inscription of Pope
Damasus engraved on marble,
the original of which may yet be
seen at the foot of the stairs
leading to the sepulchre and
church of St. Agnes (Sant'
Agnese fuori le muri);
3 - Prudentius, Peristephanon,
Hymn 14
Pope Damasus - The metrical panegyric of
Pope Damasus tells us that immediately after
the promulgation of the imperial edict against
the Christians, Agnes voluntarily declared herself
a Christian, and suffered very steadfastly the
martyrdom of fire, giving scarcely a thought to
the frightful torments she had to endure, and
concerned only with veiling, by means of her
flowing hair, her chaste body which had been
exposed to the gaze of the heathen multitude
Prudentius, in his description of
the martyrdom, adheres rather
to the account of St. Ambrose,
Still another source
of information, earlier
than the Acts of her
martyrdom, is the
glorious hymn:
Agnes beatae virginis,
The Acts of the Martyrdom of St. Agnes -in three recensions, two Greek
and one Latin -, the texts date back to the first half of the fifth century
The body of the virgin martyr was placed in a separate sepulchre on the Via Nomentana,
around her tomb there grew up a
larger catacomb that bore her name.
During the reign of
Constantine, through
the efforts of his
daughter Constantina,
a basilica was erected
over the grave of St.
Agnes, which was later
entirely remodelled by
Pope Honorius (625-
638), and has since
remained unaltered.
In the apse is a mosaic showing the martyr amid flames, with a sword at her feet.
A beautiful relief of the saint is found on a marble slab that dates from
the fourth century and was originally a part of the altar of her church
Saint Agnes has
traditionally been
depicted as a young
girl with her long hair
down, with a lamb,
the symbol of both
her virginal innocence
and her name, and a
sword (together with
the palm branch an
attribute of her
martyrdom).
The lamb,
which is agnus
in the Latin
language,
is also the
linguistic
link to the
traditional
blessing of
lambs
On the feast of Saint
Agnes two lambs
are traditionally
brought from the
Trappist abbey of
Tre Fontane in Rome
in order to be
blessed by the Pope.
In summer the lambs are shorn, and the wool is
used to weave the pallia which the Pope gives
on the feast of Saint Peter and Paul to the newly
appointed metropolitan archbishops as a sign of
his jurisdiction and their union with the pope

  • 3. She suffered martyrdom at the age of twelve or thirteen during the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian, on 21 January 304
  • 4. Agnes had many suitors of high rank, and the young men, slighted by her resolute devotion to religious purity, submitted her name to the pagan authorities as a follower of Christianity
  • 5. The Prefect Sempronius condemned Agnes to be dragged through the streets. In one account, as she prayed, her hair grew and covered her body. It was also said that all of the men that approached her were immediately struck blind. The son of the prefect was struck dead but revived after she prayed for him, causing her release.
  • 6. She was brought to trial and sentenced to death.
  • 7.
  • 8. She was led out and bound to a stake, but the bundle of wood would not burn, or the flames parted away from her,
  • 9. the officer in charge drew his sword and beheaded her, or stabbed her in the throat. It is also said that her blood poured to the stadium floor where other Christians soaked it up with cloths
  • 10.
  • 11. The martyrdom of Agnes in the Roman forum
  • 12. Agnes was buried beside the Via Nomentana in Rome.
  • 13. A few days after her death, her foster-sister, Emerentiana, was found praying by her tomb; she claimed to be the daughter of Agnes' wet nurse, and was stoned to death after refusing to leave the place and reprimanding the people for killing her foster-sister. Emerentiana was also later canonized.
  • 14. The daughter of Constantine I, Constantina, was said to have been cured of leprosy after praying at Agnes' tomb.
  • 15. Agnes was venerated as a saint at least as early as the time of St Ambrose, based on an existing homily. She is commemorated in the Depositio Martyrum of Filocalus (354) and in the early Roman Sacramentaries
  • 16. Saint Agnes' bones are conserved beneath the high altar in the church of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura in Rome, built over the catacomb that housed her tomb.
  • 17. Her skull is preserved in a separate chapel in the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone in Rome's Piazza Navona
  • 18. Sources of information about Agnes 1- St. Ambrose, De Virginibus, I, 2; 2 - the inscription of Pope Damasus engraved on marble, the original of which may yet be seen at the foot of the stairs leading to the sepulchre and church of St. Agnes (Sant' Agnese fuori le muri); 3 - Prudentius, Peristephanon, Hymn 14
  • 19. Pope Damasus - The metrical panegyric of Pope Damasus tells us that immediately after the promulgation of the imperial edict against the Christians, Agnes voluntarily declared herself a Christian, and suffered very steadfastly the martyrdom of fire, giving scarcely a thought to the frightful torments she had to endure, and concerned only with veiling, by means of her flowing hair, her chaste body which had been exposed to the gaze of the heathen multitude
  • 20. Prudentius, in his description of the martyrdom, adheres rather to the account of St. Ambrose,
  • 21. Still another source of information, earlier than the Acts of her martyrdom, is the glorious hymn: Agnes beatae virginis,
  • 22. The Acts of the Martyrdom of St. Agnes -in three recensions, two Greek and one Latin -, the texts date back to the first half of the fifth century
  • 23. The body of the virgin martyr was placed in a separate sepulchre on the Via Nomentana,
  • 24. around her tomb there grew up a larger catacomb that bore her name.
  • 25. During the reign of Constantine, through the efforts of his daughter Constantina, a basilica was erected over the grave of St. Agnes, which was later entirely remodelled by Pope Honorius (625- 638), and has since remained unaltered.
  • 26. In the apse is a mosaic showing the martyr amid flames, with a sword at her feet.
  • 27. A beautiful relief of the saint is found on a marble slab that dates from the fourth century and was originally a part of the altar of her church
  • 28. Saint Agnes has traditionally been depicted as a young girl with her long hair down, with a lamb, the symbol of both her virginal innocence and her name, and a sword (together with the palm branch an attribute of her martyrdom).
  • 29. The lamb, which is agnus in the Latin language, is also the linguistic link to the traditional blessing of lambs
  • 30. On the feast of Saint Agnes two lambs are traditionally brought from the Trappist abbey of Tre Fontane in Rome in order to be blessed by the Pope.
  • 31. In summer the lambs are shorn, and the wool is used to weave the pallia which the Pope gives on the feast of Saint Peter and Paul to the newly appointed metropolitan archbishops as a sign of his jurisdiction and their union with the pope
