2. Founder of Christian communities, evangelizer in several of the most important
urban centers of the Roman Empire such as Antioch, Corinth, Ephesus, and Rome.
Paul (Tarsus, Cilicia AD 5-10-Rome, 58-67), is called the "Apostle of the Gentiles",
3. and redactor of some
of the earliest Christian
canonical writings
Paul constitutes a first-rate
personality of early
Christianity, and one of the
most influential figures in
all of history of christianity
5. Paul used this set of conditions to found several of the first Christian centers and
to announce the figure of Jesus Christ to both Jews and Gentiles. Without having
belonged to the initial circle of the Twelve Apostles, and following paths marked
by misunderstandings and adversities, Paul became an eminent architect in the
construction and expansion of Christianity in the Roman Empire, thanks to
his talent, his conviction and his indisputable missionary character
7. His letters. Probably all written in the 0050s, they are
1 – Kerygmatics - 1 + 2 Thessalonians (50-51ad)
2 - Great letters - Corinthians 1 + 2, Galatians, Romans
3 - Letters from the Captivity - Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, Ephesians
4 - Pastoral Letters - Timothy and Titus
8. Tarsus was a prosperous
city of some importance
(Acts 21, 39).
Capital of the Roman
province of Cilicia from
64 BC. C., it was located
at the foot of the Taurus
mountains and on the
banks of the Cidno river,
whose mouth in the
Mediterranean Sea served
Tarsus as a port.
Tarsus had commercial
importance, since it was
part of the route that linked
Syria and Anatolia.
9. It was also the center
of a school of Stoic
philosophy.
It was, therefore,
a city known as a
center of culture,
philosophy
and education.
The city of Tarsus
was granted Roman
citizenship by birth
10. son of
Hebrews and
descendant
of the tribe of
Benjamin, … he
was educated in
Jerusalem, at the
feet of the famous
Rabbi Gamaliel,
and that he was
a Pharisee
11. “All Jews know my life from my youth, since when I was in the
bosom of my nation, in Jerusalem. They have known me for a
long time and if they want they can testify that I have lived as a
Pharisee according to the strictest sect of our religion. Acts 26, 4-5
12. He had his first
contact with the
followers of Jesus
in Jerusalem, with
the Judeo-Hellenistic
group of Stephen
and his companions.
Saul Paul approved
the stoning of Stephen
the protomartyr, an
execution dating from
the first half of the 30s
13. Saul approved of his death. That day a great persecution broke out against the
Church in Jerusalem. All, except for the apostles, were scattered throughout the
regions of Judea and Samaria. Some pious men buried Stephen and mourned him
greatly. Meanwhile Saul was wreaking havoc in the Church; he entered the houses,
forcibly took men and women, and put them in jail”. Acts of the Apostles 8, 1-3
14. “You are aware of my former conduct in Judaism, how fiercely
I persecuted the Church of God and devastated it, and how
I surpassed many of my contemporary countrymen in Judaism,
surpassing them in zeal for the traditions of my fathers.”
15. "Saul, still breathing threats and deaths against
the Lord's disciples, went to the High Priest,
and asked for letters for the synagoguesof
Damascus, so that if he found some followers
of the Way, men or women,he might lead
them bound to Jerusalem.”
16. It happened that, on his way,
when he was near Damascus,
suddenly a light from heaven
surrounded him, he fell to the
ground and heard a voice say
to him: "Saul, Saul, why do you
persecute me?" He replied,
"Who are you, Lord?" And he:
«I am Jesus, whom you
persecute. But get up, go into
the city, and you will be told
what you must do.”
The men who were with him had
stopped speechless with fright;
they heard the voice, but saw
no one. Saul got up from the
ground, and, although his eyes
were open, he did not see
anything. They took him by the
hand and led him into Damascus.
He spent three days without
seeing, without eating and
without drinking. Acts 9, 1-9
17. Paul himself presented this experience as a "vision" (1 Corinthians 9, 1),
as an "appearance" of the risen Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15, 8) or as a
"revelation" of Jesus Christ and his Gospel (Galatians 1, 12- 16; 1 Cor 2, 10).
18. “But when He who separated me from my mother's womb and called me by his grace, had to
reveal his Son in me, so that I might announce Him among the Gentiles, immediately, without
asking advice of flesh or blood, without going up to Jerusalem where the apostles before me,
I went to Arabia, whence I returned to Damascus again.” Epistle to the Galatians 1, 12-17
19. "And lastly [the risen Christ] appeared to me also,
like to a miscarriage." 1 Corinthians 15, 8-9
20. Ananias went
and entered the
house, and after
laying his hands
on him, he said:
Brother Saul,
the Lord Jesus,
who appeared
to you in the
way you came,
he has sent me
so that you may
regain your
sight and be
filled with the
Holy Spirit.
21. After the event Paul experienced on the road to Damascus,
Ananias cured him of his blindness by laying his hands on him.
Paul was baptized and stayed in Damascus for a few days
22. Paul of Tarsus began his ministry in Damascus and
Arabia, the name by which the Nabataean kingdom
was referred to. He was persecuted by the ethnarch
Aretas IV, a fact that is usually dated to the years 38-39
23. With Aretas IV (9 BC-40 AD)
The Nabataean kingdom
reached its maximum splendor.
Initially he was at enmity with
the Romans, among other
reasons for having risen to the
throne without authorization
from the Emperor Augustus.
But Aretas knew how to win
the favor of Rome by putting at
the disposal of Varus a good
contingent of men against
a Jewish sedition.
The enmity with the
neighboring country increased
when Herod Antipas (the
tetrarch of Galilee), repudiated
the daughter of King Aretas IV,
uniting with Herodias, the wife
of his brother. This was the real
reason for the war, though it
was justified by border issues.
24. Tiberius sided with the Jews and ordered that, dead or alive, Aretas be brought to Rome, but when
the emperor died, Vitellius, legate of Syria, was unable to capture the monarch who remained in
Petra, not forgetting his northern domains in the Damascene region. In the time of Caligula (37-41)
he was represented in Damascus by an ethnarch who looked after the interests of the people.
In this period the events that Paul of Tarsus refers to in his Second letter to the Corinthians 11.32
occurred. –Aretas IV's successors lost control of Damascus under Emperor Nero, though they
continued to hold sway in Admedeva, the first town on the route from Damascus to Palmyra.
TIBERIO PETRA
25. Paul fled to
Jerusalem where
he visited and
talked with Peter
and James -
Gal (1, 18-19).
According to the
Acts (9, 26-28), it
was Barnabas who
took him to meet
the apostles
26. He was forced
to flee Jerusalem
to escape the
Greek speaking
Jews.
He was driven
to Caesarea
Maritima and
sent to take
refuge inTarsus
of Cilicia
27. Barnabas went to Tarsus
and he accompanied Paul
to Antioch, where the
denomination of
“Christians” was first used
for the disciples of Jesus.
28. Paul spent a year evangelizing there, before being sent to
Jerusalem with alms for those suffering from famine. Antioch
would become the center of Christian converts from paganism
