After Pentecost the Church grew quickly.
The Apostles preached the Gospel and made many disciples
St. Paul primarily evangelized Gentiles ~ converting non-Jews to the
Gospel.
Church’s decisions to settle teaching differences (Mosaic Law of the Jews)
~ Council of Jerusalem (Peter & Apostles)
Apostles evangelized ~ all but one of the Apostles (John) suffered
and died a martyr's death

This chapter we will examine…
The basis of authority in the Church, found in
the hierarchy and the Magisterium.
Why is hierarchy important in the Church?
What does it mean to be baptized into the
common priesthood of the faithful?

Part of the mystery of the Church is that it is an invisible reality and visible
society.
It is both human and divine. It is in history but transcends it as well.
It is only with the “eyes of faith” that one can see the visible as well as the spiritual reality
9. Through baptism those who respond to Christ are incorporated into his
Body, the Church.
Members work to make the kingdom of God manifest on earth as it journeys
toward Heaven.
The Church on earth is a community striving to live a life of faith, hope, and
charity in the world.
10. VViissiibbllee aanndd IInnvviissiibbllee
The Church as a visible structure. We rely on the physical and
visible signs to convey invisible realities.
Ex. Paintings and statues and stained glass (to make the invisible visible)
God established a visible structure to the Church in order to
communicate his truth and grace to all humanity.
11. VViissiibbllee aanndd IInnvviissiibbllee
Jesus said in Jn 18:38 – He came to bear witness to the truth and we hear the truth
in his voice.
Christ is the way the truth and the life b/c he shows us the way to holiness and
eternal life. He is our model and he entrusted the Church to teach us his way of life
and truth and this is how the Kingdom of God grows on earth.

Human communities need human leadership
The Apostles were appointed by Jesus to
lead his Church
St. Peter as the rock or head of the Church.
They were given formation and instruction by
Jesus
Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to guide the
Church and preserve her from moral and
doctrinal error.

Hierarchy – term meaning “sacred order” that refers to
the structure of authority and governance in the Church.
Those in authority, serve the members by
teaching and sanctifying them
How do the priests of the parish teach
and sanctify us? ~Homily, Eucharist, & Confession.
Common Priesthood of the faithful – by
virtue of baptism ~We are all called to a life of
holiness & sacrifice as a witness to others.
15. TThhee CChhuurrcchh HHiieerraarrcchhyy
Ministerial priesthood – ordained
The hierarchy of the bishops, priests, and deacons
was developed during the time of the 12 Apostles.
Holy Orders passes down the authority of the
Apostles in the Church
Priests and bishops are ordained to serve

The Papacy
The pope is the apostolic successor of St. Peter and he
shares Peter’s authority to rule the Church, possessing
the gift of infallibility in defining doctrines of faith and
morals.
Christ guaranteed that St. Peter and his successors would
be free from error, or infallible, so that they would faithfully
lead the Church in the truth of Christ.
It is the work of the Holy Spirit in the Church that
preserves the truth of God.

Administrative governing body of the Church
Assists the Pope with pasturing the universal Church.
Secretariat of the state, nine congregations, three tribunals, 12 pontifical councils
20. TThhee CChhuurrcchh aass TTeeaacchheerr
Jesus is the greatest teacher in history
He commissioned the Apostles and
successors to teach as he taught
The teachings of the Church are called the
Deposit of Faith.
The Church doesn’t add to or take away from
Christ’s revelation.
The official teaching office of the Church is
called the Magisterium
The Magisterium is composed of the Pope and
bishops in communion with him
21. Conclusion
Christ established the Church
with a hierarchy for the purpose
of governing the faithful and
communicating his truth and
grace to the world.
23. “Come Holy Spirit” ~ Prayer
In the name of the Father…
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send
forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And
You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God,
who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct
the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same
Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy
His consolations, through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
Without it, there would be no organized institution. Jesus Christ himself, as the Head of the Body, and The hierarchy safeguards and faithfully hands down and authoritatively interprets the Divine Revelation preserved in the Church.
