Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and
kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your
Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall
renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the
light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the
faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may
be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations,
through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
Goal : To receive a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit

 To understand different aspects of church
 Foundation set by Christ
 Guidance of the Holy Spirit

 God created us out of love
We were created for happiness, which we
find in a relationship with God
 Our sin has tarnished this relationship
 God wants us to be able to restore this unity
and receive His grace
When we are living in God’s grace we are
responding to the universal call to Holiness
and being who were created to be (CCC 1996-97)
HHooww ddoo wwee rreecceeiivvee tthhiiss GGrraaccee??
Jesus died for us to restore our
broken relationship with God.
It is through Jesus we receive
Grace
We receive Jesus through the
Church (Sacraments).
Instruction

Before Jesus ascended, he
prepared his Apostles, so that
they would be able to lead His
Church and continue His
mission
TThhee HHoollyy SSppiirriitt
Jesus promised the Apostles that he would send
an Advocate, a Counselor ~(Jn 14:16,18,26)
The Holy Spirit guides the Body of Christ
Christ breathes the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles (Jn 20:22)
You should receive power when the Holy Spirit come
upon you (Acts 1:8)
The Holy Spirit descends upon the Apostles at
Pentecost (Acts 2)
PPeenntteeccoosstt
 The Apostles, disciples and Mary gathered in
the Upper Room
 Holy Spirit descends in tongues of fire ~ Acts 2:1-4
 Pentecost is often called the birthday of the
Church b/c it marks the beginning of the
Church’s public ministry in the world.
 3,000 baptized and become Christian on the
first day

 The church is the “pillar and bulwark of
truth” (1Tim 3:15) which Christ sent his Holy
Spirit to guide.
Magisterium - the teaching body of the
Church that upholds the Truth of Christ
The Magisterium consists of all the
Bishops in union with the Pope, who is
the successor of Peter
Apostolic Succession
TTwweellvvee AAppoossttlleess
 Christ appointed twelve Apostles to be with him
and sent them out to preach. (Mk 3:14-15)
 Jesus equipped the twelve to be the
foundation of his Church.
 The Apostles would lead the Church until the
end of time by appointing successors to fulfill
their responsibilities
 Those successors are called Bishops

 Peter is given primacy among the Apostles
 Given the Keys of the Kingdom (Mt.16:18)
 Leads the replacing of Judas (Acts 1)
 Leads the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15)
 The Apostles passed on their office through the
laying on of hands ( Apostolic Succession)
 In Acts 1, The Apostles meet with Peter as their leader and decide
on Mathias to take Judas’ place – “another shall take his place”
 In 2nd century St. Irenaus copies down the line of the bishop of Rome
 We can trace the lineage of our bishops back to the Apostles
 Christ commissions them to go to the ends of the
earth spreading the Gospel (Mt.28:19, Act 1:8)
TThhee CCoouunncciill ooff JJeerruussaalleemm
 Many Jewish Christians wanted Gentile
converts to become Jews by circumcision
when becoming Christian.
 St. Paul, St.Peter, the Apostles, and priests
met in Jerusalem to decide the matter.
 Decided that to be a Christian a person
needed faith in Jesus and baptism; they did not
have to adhere to Jewish traditions

St. Peter~(Mt 16:18-19)
 Peter receives a new name that means
Rock, meaning he is the foundation of the Church.
 Peter is given keys indicating that he is the leader
(Prime Minister) of the Church.
 Jesus is still the King but Peter, and his successor,
~ day-to-day authority of the Church.
 Peter is given authority to make decision in the
Church with the power of binding and loosing.

 The Gifts of the Spirit ushers in a new era in the
age of the Church
 During this, Christ manifests, makes present, and
communicates his work of salvation through the liturgy of
his church
 Christ acts through the Sacraments
 This is the dispensation of the fruits of Christ’s Paschal Mystery
(CCC 1076)

 Definition – Visible sign instituted by Christ that
confers God’s invisible grace
 Sacraments are a visible sign of God’s grace which Christ
entrusted to the Church (CCC 1131)

 The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves
around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the
sacraments (CCC 1113)
 Because of Sin we need the Sacraments
 Examples of how these sacraments help us
 Baptism
 In Baptism we are cleansed of sin and participate in the
life of Christ
 As an “adopted son” we can call God “Father,” in union
with the only Son
 Co-heirs with Christ with Father’s inheritance
 Receives the life of the Spirit who breathes charity into
him and who forms the Church (CCC 1997)

 In Confession we experience spiritual
healing, purifying our souls to be in a
relationship with Jesus Christ

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Apostolic succession "may also be understood as a continuity in doctrinal teaching from the time of the apostles to the present."
  2. Council of Jerusalem (or Apostolic Conference) is a name applied by historians and theologians to a Christian Apostolic Age council that was held inJerusalem and dated to around the year 50 AD. Around the year 48 an issue arose in Antioch concerning the circumcision of non-Jews, when some Christians coming from Judea claimed their freedom acquired in Christ Jesus (cf. Gal. 2:4), which even Paul and Barnabas invoked so as not to impose this rite of circumcision on pagan converts to Christianity. The community decided to consult the Apostles and Elders of Jerusalem. Thus, it sent Paul and Barnabas together with Titus, their Greek companion, as well as a delegation to accompany them to Jerusalem.
  3. Derived from the Greek Πετρος (Petros) meaning "stone". This is a translation used in most versions of the New Testament of the name Cephas, meaning "stone" in Aramaic, which was given to the apostle Simon by Jesus (compare Matthew 16:18 and John 1:42). Simon Peter was the most prominent of the apostles during Jesus' ministry and is often considered the first pope.
  4. The word "Church" (Latin ecclesia, from the Greek ek-ka-lein, to "call out of") means a convocation or an assembly. It designates the assemblies of the people, usually for a religious purpose.139 Ekklesia is used frequently in the Greek Old Testament for the assembly of the Chosen People before God, above all for their assembly on Mount Sinai where Israel received the Law and was established by God as his holy people.140 By calling itself "Church," the first community of Christian believers recognized itself as heir to that assembly. In the Church, God is "calling together" his people from all the ends of the earth.
