This document defines the environment and introduces some key concepts in environmental studies. It defines environment as the surroundings or conditions where living things exist, and distinguishes between natural environments that have not been influenced by humans and built environments that have been influenced by human activity. It then defines ecology as the study of relationships between living organisms and their non-living surroundings. An ecosystem is introduced as a community where living and non-living things interact, with the basic components being biotic factors like organisms, abiotic factors like light and temperature, and energy. Food chains and the carbon cycle are provided as examples of interactions within an ecosystem.
