The Portage College Public Legal Education (PLE) Program is a public service initiative offered
in partnership with the Alberta Law Foundation. The program offers learning opportunities to
individuals, families, and communities throughout North Eastern Alberta through the provision
of information, resources, and education on a variety of legal topics. Some areas of interest
might include:

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE?
The Portage College PLE Program is in a unique position being the only rural based PLE program
in Alberta. In order to deliver effective and valuable community-based programming PLE must
collaborate and form partnerships with many communities and organizations across our
service region to carry out our program goals and objectives.

Alberta Law Line is a province wide program of Legal Aid Alberta. The Law Line is a free service
that provides legal information and referrals to Albertans and provides legal advice to eligible
callers over the telephone. All calls are confidential. Service Available: Mon. to Fri. 9 a.m. - 4

ALBERTA MAINTENANCE ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM
The Alberta Maintenance Enforcement Program (MEP) is authorized by the Alberta
Maintenance Enforcement Act to collect child and spousal maintenance granted by the courts.
MEP can also enforce certain types of maintenance agreements. The MEP website includes
information sheets outlining how to get started with the program, as well as information and
forms for the creditor, the debtor and the employer. A glossary provides the terms and
definitions used by the Maintenance Enforcement Program. Visit the MEP website at

ALBERTA OFFICE OF THE OMBUDSMAN
The Ombudsman conducts impartial investigations on receipt of written complaints for
individuals who believe they have been treated unfairly by the provincial government. The
authority to investigate these complaints is given by the Alberta Ombudsman Act. The
Ombudsman is independent of government and has broad powers to investigate actions,
decisions, practices and procedures of Alberta government departments, boards, agencies and
commissions.

CHILD AND YOUTH ADVOCATE (OFFICE OF THE)
The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) is an independent office of the Legislative
Assembly of Alberta, mandated to work with vulnerable young people.
The OCYA provides individual and systemic advocacy for children and youth receiving
“designated services” as defined under the Child and Youth Advocate Act. This includes young
people receiving or attempting to access services under the Child, Youth and Family
Enhancement Act and the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act, aswell as youth involved
with the youth justice system. The OCYA also provides access to legal representation for
children and youth receiving child intervention services, provides public education, and
conducts investigations into systemic issues in the event of the serious injury or death of a

The Lawyer Referral Service is a program operated by the Law Society of Alberta to assist
people in finding a lawyer who will provide them with the legal services they require. It is an
information service and is not connected with Legal Aid – nor does it provide any form of

Family Justice Services are a group of programs and services offered by Alberta Justice in
collaboration with the courts of Alberta. Family Justice Services works directly with individuals
and also with the judges of the Alberta Provincial Court and Court of Queen's Bench to help
people get appropriate solutions for their family law issues. Family Court Counsellors provide
services, at no cost, to families who are involved in parenting disputes and are living separate

The Provincial Diversion Program helps ensure that, whenever possible, adults and adolescents
with a mental illness who commit low risk minor offences and come into conflict with the law
receive appropriate care, support and treatment in the community rather than in the criminal
justice system. When eligible for Diversion Service, and with consent, the individual receives
community based care and treatment that focuses on the specific mental health or life skills
issues that may have contributed to the commission of the offence.
