Defining Distance Education
4. What is distance education or
distance learning?
Defining the meaning of distance education may provide a
good starting point to recognise its elements.

5. Defining Distance Education
‘a term that covers the various forms of
study at all levels which are not under the
continuous immediate supervision of tutors
present with their students in lecture rooms,
but which, benefit from the planning,
guidance and tuition of a tutorial
organisation’ (Holmberg, 1977, p. 9).
6. Defining Distance Education
Distance education is a method of
education in which the learner is physically
separated from the teacher by space and
time.
Distance education materials are often
structured in ways that facilitate learning at
a distance.
Rumble (1989)
7. Defining Distance Education
the majority of educational communication
between the teacher and students occurs
non-contiguously.
involve two-way communication
technology between the teacher and
students for the purpose of facilitating and
supporting the educational process.
Garrison and Shale 1990, p. 25

The separation of teacher and learner;
The separation among learners;
The use of technology to deliver the
subject matter; and
The use of a communication channel to
facilitate interaction and support learners.
9. Defining Distance Education
What is distance education or
distance learning?
Distance education, distance learning, D-learning, or D-
Learning is a mode of delivering education and instruction,
often on an individual basis, to students who are not
physically present in a traditional setting such as a classroom.
Distance learning provides "access to learning when the
source of information and the learners are separated by time
and distance, or both."
10. Defining Distance Education
History of distance education and
technology (old technology)
Distance education traces its origins to mid-19th century Europe and
the United States. The pioneers of distance education used the best
technology of their day, the postal system, to open educational
opportunities to people who wanted to learn but were not able to attend
conventional schools. People who most benefited from such
correspondence education included those with physical disabilities,
women who were not allowed to enroll in educational institutions open
only to men, people who had jobs during normal school hours, and
those who lived in remote regions where schools did not exist
11. Defining Distance Education
History of distance education and technology (modern technology)
The development of reliable long-distance telephone systems in the early
1900s also increased the capacity of distance educators to reach new student
populations. But telephone systems never played a prominent role in education
until the introduction of new teleconferencing technologies in the 1980s and
1990s. Teleconferencing systems made it possible for teachers to talk with,
hear, and see their students in real time - that is, with no delays in the
transmissions - even if they were located across the country or around the
world.
Distance education increasingly uses combinations of different
communications technologies to enhance the abilities of teachers and students
to communicate with each other. With the spread of computer-network
communications in the 1980s and 1990s, large numbers of people gained
access to computers linked to telephone lines, allowing teachers and students
to communicate in conferences via computers.
13. Defining Distance Education
In conclusion, many key features characterize
distance education:
1. The separation of teacher and learner;
2. The separation among learners;
3. The use of one medium to deliver instruction;
and
4. The use of a communication channel to
facilitate interaction and support learners.
