Recall - I
 Different layers of TCP/IP stack include:
      Application layer

      Transport layer

      Internet Layer

      Network interface layer

 Protocols that function at the application layer are:
 Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)

 Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)

      File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

      Telnet

Chapter 3 3
Recall - II
 Protocols that function at the transport layer include:
      TCP

      User Datagram Protocol (UDP)

 Protocols that function at the internet layer include:
      Address Resolution protocol (ARP)

 Reverse Address Resolution Protocol (RARP)

 IP address is a 32-bit binary number that is unique
     for each device
 Smaller groups of a large network are known as
     subnets

Chapter 3 4
Hubs
 A hub joins multiple network segments together to
     form a single segment
 At a particular time, only one computer connected to
     the hub can transmit data
 The number of ports in a hub range from 4 to 24

Chapter 3 5
Switches
 Switches are data-link layer devices that connect
multiple LAN segments to form a single network
     segment
 Switches examine the data packets for source and
     destination addresses
 Switches minimize the possibility of collisions of
data packets by reducing collision domains

Chapter 3 8
Routers
 Routers are devices that forward data to their
     appropriate destinations
 Routers decide the best possible route that a packet
needs to take to reach its destination
 Routers maintain a routing table to decide the route
     for the data

Chapter 3 9
Routers
 The functions of routers are:
      Provide traffic management

 Do not pass broadcast traffic

      Connect different network segments

Chapter 3 10
Case Study
The Blue Diamond Steel Company has decided to
shift the Finance department from the Hyderabad
branch to the primary branch in Gujarat. Suddenly,
the LAN connected to the finance department was not
processing any requests. This lead to delay in
sending the payroll details to HR department in
 Hyderabad and Gujarat.

Chapter 3 11
Problem

After troubleshooting the router connected to the
LAN of finance department, the network
administrator identified that the router gets heated
up this is stopping the transfer of information
                       between the networks

Chapter 3 12
Suggested Solution
 The network administrator suggests that he had
configured a Cisco 1700 series router and it can be
     connected to the LAN.

Chapter 3 13
Repeaters
 Repeater is a device that increases the strength of
the data signals sent across the network
 It obtains a weak signal from the network, amplifies
it and passes it on to the next network segment

Chapter 3 14
WAN Devices
 Wide Area Network (WAN) is a communication network
that spans over a wide geographical area
 WAN technologies function at the lower three layers of
the OSI model, the physical layer, the data link layer and
     network layer
 Devices that are used in WAN are
      WAN Switch

      Access Server

      Modem

      Channel Service Unit

      ISDN Terminal Adapter

Chapter 3 15
Bridges
 Bridges are devices that divide the network into
different segments thereby, enabling you to reduce
     traffic on the network
 It decides the network segment where the data has
to travel in order to reach its destination
 It verifies the source and destination addresses of
the data packet from the routing table that it builds

Chapter 3 16
Summary - I
 A hub joins multiple network segments together to
     form a single segment
 The active hubs regenerate the signals sent over
     the network reducing attenuation
 Attenuation refers to the phenomenon of weakening
of signals transmitted over the network
 Passive hubs do not regenerate the signals but pass
them on to all the ports on the network
 Hybrid hubs enable you to create a hub-based
     network

Chapter 3 17
Summary - II
 Switches are data-link layer devices that connect
multiple LAN segments to form a single network
     segment
 Collision domains are the network segments
     between two network devices
 Microsegmentation is a technique by which the
switches cut down the collision domain into smaller
     segments
 Routers are devices that forward data to their
appropriate destinations using a process known as
     routing
Chapter 3 18
Summary - III
 A repeater is a device that amplifies the data signals
that are sent across the network
 WAN or Wide Area Network is a communications
network that spans over a wide geographical area
 Channel Service Unit (CSU) device provides a
digital interface for connecting routers to digital
     circuits
 ISDN Terminal Adapter enables you to connect an
     ISDN interface to a router

  • 14. Repeaters  Repeater is a device that increases the strength of the data signals sent across the network  It obtains a weak signal from the network, amplifies it and passes it on to the next network segment Chapter 3 14
  • 15. WAN Devices  Wide Area Network (WAN) is a communication network that spans over a wide geographical area  WAN technologies function at the lower three layers of the OSI model, the physical layer, the data link layer and network layer  Devices that are used in WAN are  WAN Switch  Access Server  Modem  Channel Service Unit  ISDN Terminal Adapter Chapter 3 15
  • 16. Bridges  Bridges are devices that divide the network into different segments thereby, enabling you to reduce traffic on the network  It decides the network segment where the data has to travel in order to reach its destination  It verifies the source and destination addresses of the data packet from the routing table that it builds Chapter 3 16
  • 17. Summary - I  A hub joins multiple network segments together to form a single segment  The active hubs regenerate the signals sent over the network reducing attenuation  Attenuation refers to the phenomenon of weakening of signals transmitted over the network  Passive hubs do not regenerate the signals but pass them on to all the ports on the network  Hybrid hubs enable you to create a hub-based network Chapter 3 17
  • 18. Summary - II  Switches are data-link layer devices that connect multiple LAN segments to form a single network segment  Collision domains are the network segments between two network devices  Microsegmentation is a technique by which the switches cut down the collision domain into smaller segments  Routers are devices that forward data to their appropriate destinations using a process known as routing Chapter 3 18
  • 19. Summary - III  A repeater is a device that amplifies the data signals that are sent across the network  WAN or Wide Area Network is a communications network that spans over a wide geographical area  Channel Service Unit (CSU) device provides a digital interface for connecting routers to digital circuits  ISDN Terminal Adapter enables you to connect an ISDN interface to a router Chapter 3 19
