KINDS OF ODES
We have two kinds of Odes:
• English Ode
A lyrical stanza in praise of, or dedicated to someone or something which captures the
poet's interest or serves as an inspiration for the ode. An ode's lyrics can be on various themes.
• Classic Ode
structured in three major parts: the strophe, the antistrophe, and the epode.
1. Strophe is a concept in versification which properly means a turn, as from one foot to
another, or from one side of a chorus to the other.. Is a poetic term originally referring to
the first part of the ode in Ancient Greek tragedy. The term has been extended to also
mean a structural division of a poem containing stanzas of varying line length. In poems
composed of similar units, such as epic poems, the term strophic is synonymous with
stanzaic.
2. Antistrophe is the portion of an ode sung by the chorus in its returning movement from west
to east, in response to the strophe, which was sung from east to west. It has the nature of a
reply and balances the effect of the strophe.
3. Epode is the third part of an ode, which followed the strophe and the antistrophe, and
completed the movement. Soon took a firm place in choral poetry, which it lost when that
branch of literature declined. But it extended beyond the ode, and in the early dramatists
we find numerous examples of monologues and dialogues framed on the epodical
system. In Latin poetry the epode was cultivated, in conscious archaism, both as a part of
the ode and as an independent branch of poetry.
