Mangroves play an important role in the intertidal zones of Ernakulam district in Kerala. 14 of Kerala's 15 true mangrove species have been identified in Ernakulam, including 4 rare species. Nypa fruticans is a true mangrove planted along the coast. However, mangroves in Ernakulam are under threat from development activities and pollution that deplete wetlands and destroy mangrove ecosystems. Conservation efforts are needed to protect mangroves, which straddle land and sea.
