The Theme of Marriage in Romeo and Juliet The way that people viewed marriage in Shakespeare's
era of the early seventeenth century differs greatly from the way that people view it today. In
Romeo and Juliet, the title characters possess a viewpoint on marriage that would be thought of as
radical for the time period that they lived in. Romeo and Juliet's desire to wed is driven by
passion and love, but their elders view marriage strictly as a social position, without consideration
for emotion. Marriage is not given a positive reputation in Romeo and Juliet. Marriages in this
time period were almost always arranged. The brides were usually just entering their teenage years
and were too young to refuse a wedding. The young bride's parents typically selected the groom
who would bring the family the most financial and societal benefits. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet's
mother desperately wants Juliet to marry County Paris. As a handsome kinsman to the Prince, Paris

fate had other plans. In Act I, as Lord Capulet's servant is searching for someone who can read the
guest list to him, Benvolio and Romeo enter. Completely by chance, Capulet's servant meets
Romeo and Benvolio, wondering if they know how to read. This accidental meeting shows the
