Essay On Service Learning
Service learning is a great new experience for college students. Students better themselves by
participating in this program, but everyone has a different input on how they feel about it. Service
learning could really help those that feel lost with their major or direction of life in general. By
implementing a service learning requirement for all RCBC students to graduate it will create a
positive change because it benefits the community, students may discover they love volunteering
long–term, and students will also gain experience and course credits. Initially, implementing a
service learning requirement for all RCBC students to graduate creates a positive change because it
benefits the community: both parties benefit from it....show more content...
This will lead to students partaking in community service in their free time which is always a major
positive and something everyone should be involved in. Scott Seider, Samantha Rabinowicz, and
Susan Gillmor talk about service–learning in "Differential Outcomes for American College Students
Engaged in Community Service–Learning Involving Youth and Adults". The authors also state
"Students achieve a greater awareness of social issues and a deeper commitment to community
involvement" (Seider, Rabinowicz, & Gilmore). The authors of the article also use Kendrick,
Markus, Howard, and King as references for the quote. By helping the community, a person has a
deeper relationship and a better understanding of it.
This program also creates a solid activity they can add to their resume. Someone with an
engineering major might start this and change their whole major because of service learning,
realizing what they have a passion for. "Colleges are best–poised to create in their students a lifelong
commitment to volunteering even a few hours a month" (Eggers). By going monthly, some students
create a schedule in which they include volunteering. If they go on to do it for years, it becomes a
part of their day to day routines, volunteering really changes a person for the

The service day on April 5th, really gave me a precious opportunity to have access to the life and
health of immigrant persons from South America and their priorities in life as well as their
consideration about health. This is my first time to help so many immigrant persons from South
America check their blood pressure, height and body weight, and give them information about
how to have access to free clinical and blood pressure control as well as weight management. I really
thank Professor Raja, because it was she who gave us this precious experience to do service for and
know this special population in USA.
Even though health status is quite important for plenty of people in USA, it unfortunately became the

For men, preventive care should be focused on cessation of smoking and alcohol using and diet
for men. Males in this target group told me that they work long hours on physically demanding
jobs each day, but their diet is unhealthy because of financial issues and they smoke and drink a lot
because of great pressure on them. Men who were checked had generally high blood pressure and
BMI. For women in this population, they told me they spent much time at home taking care of
their children and purchase cheap fast food. Their blood pressure and BMI both were also very
high. I asked them whether they purchased health insurance, but many of them just slipped away
or did not want to tell me, but some of them did have interest in free clinical service. Many of
them told me that they like spicy food and Cola, so for them, they should be encouraged to cook
healthy food with low sodium and more vegetables, eat less fast food and maintain regular
exercise everyday. For those men who smoke or drink a lot, they need to be encouraged to cut
down on them as soon as possible. According to the research of Otiniano et al. (2003), Mexican
Americans were reported to have a greater incidence of heart attack related to high blood pressure
and obesity, but had a decreased prevalence of self–reported heart attack than Non–Hispanic whites
due to the low socioeconomic status and less education. It seems that low socioeconomic status and
less education are the major

Fox Valley Humane Association Service Learning Project
I decided to start volunteering at the local humane society because I've always been really
passionate about animals and wanted to start benefiting them in the community. Prior to my service
I was delighted because I've wanted to start volunteering for years and was glad the opportunity had
presented itself. Throughout my experience I learned a great deal and met a lot of new people. Even
though I've only just started serving my time at the Fox Valley Humane Association I can truly see
the difference it has made in the community.
I started out by attending an orientation for new volunteers. During this time I filled out...show more

He came to the shelter seeking to find his cat. He told me how he had decided to end things with his
girlfriend and that the day after his cat was missing. Turns out his girlfriend proceeded to break
into his house and steal his cat along with all the cats' things. I had to break the news that she had
brought the cat here to be euthanized. I then helped him gather his Louie Viton cat carrier (Goes to
show how much he truly loved his cat), his beloved cat's toys, blanket, and bed. This guy was a
mess and it was very hard to experience. This concludes that along with all of the many good
memories that came out of the volunteering experience at the shelter it isn't all rainbows and smiles.
I learned many things from my experience while volunteering at the Fox Valley Humane
Association. One of those is how much my time really does matter. While completing tasks like
laundry, dishes, greeter, and collecting donations out at the mall I realized how much one person can
contribute. By helping out with these tasks I prevented the staff from doing it. If volunteers weren't
present someone would still need to do the work which would have been taking away from staff
duties. The staff has other duties to tend to such as tending sick animals, preforming spaying and
neutering, declawing, and working at the desk. These are important to the animal's health and if the
staff were always busy completing tasks volunteers do there wouldn't be time to tend

Part 1 The first week of service learning at Jessie Keet Pre–Primary School was very overwhelming
and yet also motivating. I observed a community where children are in great need of love and
affection because they do not seem to get it anywhere else. Most of the children are raised in
single–parent households. Their parent(s) work hard during the day to provide for the family and
then they are too tired at night to give the children the attention and love that they need. This leads to
the fact that the children behave in ways to attract attention to themselves. They will run around,
shout or treat each other violently, like hitting each other, pulling hair and making nasty comments.
The teachers have classes with over 30 children in a...show more content...
They continually disrupt because they want more attention. A specific incident that led to my
negative emotions was when I was sitting at one of the tables in the grade R class. The children
each received a paper with the numbers 1–10 on it. In the middle of the table was a heap of those
squares that are used to tie a bread bag. The children got the instruction from their teacher, Felicity
Thomas, to pack the correct number of squares above the correct number i.e. the number 1 will
have one square above it, the number 2 will have two squares above it and so forth. Most of the
children at the table where loud, disruptive and did not really pay attention to the project. I was
sitting next to a very quiet boy who did not really want to speak to me or to anyone. I could see
that he was concentrating very hard to do the task correctly. He was taking much longer than some
of the other children in the class that finished the task. My attention was divided because I tried to
maintain order and to get the children at the table to each at least try to complete the task while at
the same time struggling to help those few who actually tried. The teacher was walking around and
writing the names of all the children who finished their task in her book. This led to the fact that the
children were competing with each other and bragging about it when they finished successfully. The
teacher rang a bell and

Service Learning is learning through experience to gain sociological observation, concepts, and
theories so I decide to do my service learning hours in one of the two high schools that is part of
the Oceanside Unified School District. The name of the school is called El Camino High School. El
Camino High School is a high school that is located at 400 Rancho Del Oro Drive in Oceanside,
California. It has over 3,000 students currently attending. The school's mascot is the "Wildcat" and
their colors are gold and red. El Camino High School is a public school that is part of a system of

Besides observing those classes I was also in there to help the students and teachers. I would help
answer questions for students and organized paperwork for the teachers. During my time at El
Camino High I majority interacted with the students and teachers. The teachers at the school
were very welcoming to me when I first came into to their classroom and during my time there.
This really led me to feel very comfortable and feel like I have been there before and a person has
become part of the school, which just made me very happy that they were exited about seeing a
young student who wanted to do service learning and learn from the service learning but also be
able to apply sociological concepts, theories and gain observation from the actual experience. The
students were very nice overall, but did constantly ask me why I was there and when I explained it
to them what I was there and why then they were very understanding and were meeting me halfway

In Service–Learning and Academic Success: The Links to Retention Research, Dan Simonet puts
forth the idea, that students more involved in their learning benefit socially and academically. His
writing uses a formal approach to inform educators about the ways that Service–Learning can
improve the academic success and retention of their students. Explaining one of the advantages for
educators, Simonet suggests that service–learning can be a tool to help create "positive relationships"
with their students (1). Simonet uses climax to organize and present his evidence, providing various
examples of research throughout the article, to further the claim that service–learning increases
student retention and bolsters their academic success.

My Experience At My Service Learning Site Essay
One of the richest experiences that I had while at my service learning site was working with an
English as a second language group. This group was filled with students who had just moved to
the area and who were not fluent in English. I was fortunate enough to be able to work with this
group in their ELA class and their Science class. This group was able to teach me so much about
myself and they were also able to help me see how different my life was from theirs. When I began
volunteering at the Edward F Parthum Jr Middle school two years ago, I believed that I would be
able to connect with the students because I was raised by a single mother. I was raised in a very
affluent town, however, by no stretch of the imagination was I rich. I thought that my financial
situation and home status would allow me to connect with these students because I felt that my life
was similar to theirs. I was soon shown that I was very wrong about my assumption. The students
that I work with have a much worse like than I did. Many of these students do not receive support
from their families because their parents work two jobs. I realized that many of these individuals did
not receive support at home after watching them get their first science exam back. When I was
working with the students the previous week, the teacher printed out study guides for each student
and then she called each student's parents to ask that they encourage their students to study. I went

I completed my service learning at The Arbors of Bedford, a nursing home for older adults suffering
with memory loss due to dementia. Their mission is to care for the whole person in a manner that
promotes freedom, choice and the opportunity to live a meaningful life (n.a., 2017). The Arbors of
Bedford promotes a therapeutic environment by creating an open and welcome environment and by
giving the residents as much choice in their lives as possible. For example, they can choose
whether to sit by the window in a seat by themselves, or in a living room chair with a group of
people. There is usually a television or music playing in one section, while another section is quiet
which allows the residents to choose the setting that is best for them. They host a variety of activities
that focus on different therapy areas. The activities offered include listening to spiritual hymns, tai
chi, craft designs, piano performances, and invention trivia. These components together, along with a
caring and competent staff, allow The Arbors of Bedford to fulfill their mission statement. In order
to develop a therapeutic relationship with the residents I use active listening skills to communicate
effectively with them and I practice empathy to make them feel understood. There is one resident at

The Society for Experiential Education defines service learning as, "any carefully monitored service
experience in which a student has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what he or she
is learning throughout the experience" (Staton 1). Service learning is a great opportunity to get extra
learning experiences while also experiencing the community around the universities campus.
"Service learning allows students to apply what they are learning from their instructors, peers, and
readings to genuine tasks that occur outside the four walls of the classroom while simultaneously
helping others" (Staton 1). Universities are using service learning to expand beyond the classroom
and provide students with experiences that will...show more content...
To most universities a respectable opinion in the public's eye is very important. Service learning will
definitely make a great impression in people's minds. In fact, some students are looking for a school
that will give them the opportunity to impact the community surrounding the campus. Also, with all
the community service being done by the students the community is more likely to support the
universities different aspects, (ie. sporting events and academic grants). With all the support from
the outside community the university will gain recognition making it a more popular school to
attend. And obviously, the more students a university has the more service projects it can do.
One concern of universities that are considering adding service learning is that not enough students
will be interested in participating. There are several ways to get students interested in service
learning. One way to get their attention is to give students who participate extra benefits. Some
examples of extra benefits would be extra credit in their courses or even offering free credit hours.
Another thing that would appeal to students is that the class would meet less often because one on
the classes meeting times would be their service learning project. Another benefit of service learning

Service Learning : Teaching And Learning
Service Learning
Service Learning is defined as a teaching and learning method that allows students to integrate with
the community. It is an idea to learn, experience and improve oneself while interacting with other
foreign students. Through this experience, we can acknowledge different perspectives, values and
diversities between two countries. For my service learning, I engaged in international events held at
KCC, such as International Game Week and International Fair. Through these experiences and
obstacles that I encountered along the way, it impacted the way I associate with others, which
includes my behaviors, my manner, and my attitudes. I will also pass on the great virtues of
Confucius.
This society consists of many people from different backgrounds and cultures. At certain activities,
students are required to cooperate with one another. My service learning project is to assist
international students to know about other cultures. The International Game Week was held at the
library. At this event, my job was to organize a game and invite students toplay. I had to learn how to
play the game and be able to teach it to others. As an assistant, when there is more than one student, I
would let the students play while communicating with them. The purpose of this event was not about
winning prizes, but to enjoy the activities and make new friends from different cultures and
backgrounds.
At the International Fair, my job was to organize a Chinese cultural table along with

Essay On Service Learning
I agree with implementing a service learning requirement for all RCBC students to graduate is a
positive change. Service–learning is a teaching and learning that are a meaningful community
service in which an individual learns to get involved in meaningful services by working on projects
that will make a difference. There are several kinds of service learning activities which one is suited
best is depends on the individual. The goals of service learning are enhanced social and academic
learning, develop character, citizenship skills, and learn about the issues. Such characters are
essential for the graduating student. It is valuable work that impacts the student and the community.
In my opinion, a mandated service–learning requirement for RCBC students is a positive change
because it is given to the community, develops the character of students, and teaches the student
practical skills. The service learning such as meaningful community work is beneficial for the
students. One kind of learning is direct service learning in which the students' service directly
impacts individuals that receive the service from the student. It involves things such as tutoring other

As in the article "Serve or Fail" Dave Eggers states, "Meeting a World War II veteran who needs

student in such activities will help a student learn about how it feels to help others in need. They
will learn the valuable skills such as problem–solving. This will let them the problem people face
around them, and then what it takes to solve this problem. This inspires the students to learn about
problems around them and solve them. This could help them gain in problem–solving skills, and
boost their self–esteem. Moreover, these activities provide the internal satisfaction that is highly

The meaning this service learning project provided me with was how important it is for us, the
Hamline University, to build a meaningful relationship with Hamline Elementary. This was invoked
because of the impact the students seemed to have due to us being there and working with them. The
students were excited for a communal learning experience, and I think that is going to help
encourage them to pursue a college career. Because I work at Hamline Elementary and have been
doing so for the past 2 years, I have made strong connections with the students and faculty and think
highly of them all. The experience was very similar to what I do at Hamline Elementary on a daily

Service Learning Reflection Report
This paper will detail Service Learning through a student's eyes. It should serve as a reflection of her
short time at the Early Childhood Learning Center on Fayetteville State University's campus. Though
the hours spent volunteering were part of requirements for an Introductions to Human Services
course, they still made a huge impact on the author. These hours have changed the author's
perspective on working with children, serving as a confirmation on her future. Assuring her that
whatever career path they choose should revolve heavily around children. This paper will detail how

There are multiple classrooms that could use extra adult supervision, there is no such thing as

room for her. Most volunteers are students from various FSU programs but there is room for
parent volunteers, though student volunteers are able to choose which age group they would like
to work with.As a volunteer the author had a life changing experience with the two year olds of
the ECLC. The children showed her just how short the developmental stages are and how
amazingly fast we as humans grow. As she watched the children go through mood swings of
happiness and anger over small but seemingly trivial things, she realized that she needs to be in a
career that revolves around the hopeful lives of young children. After the experience was over the
author reflected back on how fulfilling and how much of a learning experience it was and she
wished she would've had the time to volunteer

Service Learning Plan Sample
Service Learning Plan In the school environment, teachers may often experience different type of
students that come from poor to wealthy families. As a teacher, it is important to learn and be
open–minded about students' backgrounds. In COE 202, my plan is to volunteer for the Boys
and Girls Club and learn from my experience. It is important for me to volunteer because I need to
experience what my future career will be like. Service learning can help one learn new things
about what one's interested in. The Boys and Girls Club is a good opportunity for me to see what it
is like working with kids from low income families.
Some social problem and issues that I may encounter in this service learning is lower income
children are not getting enough funding for their school; therefore, there are not enough teachers or
staff to teach the kids. Classroom may be overcrowded which can lead to the lack of affection
teachers have for their students. For example, teachers are too busy taking care of a big group of
student that they don't have time to pay attention to each student individually. As an elementary
education major, I'm planning to volunteer at the Boys and Girls club because this club is a

and learning different methods of teaching is what makes a great teacher. From experiences, my

Reflection On Service Learning Experience
Service Learning Reflection During my course I was instructed that I had to attend volunteering. I
attended three very different events. One involving students with exceptionalities, the second
involving younger children, and lastly, I would classify the last one as a rewarding opportunity.
This essay should be regarded as a reflection of my service. It contains the details of each event I
attended, what I learned, and the activities I had to do at each event. Lastly, I intend to evaluate the
overall service learning hour project.
The first event I chose to attend was a volunteering opportunity helping students with
exceptionalities. This event took place on November 9th, 2017 at Clayton State University. The
event was presented by Dr. Mandy Lusk. For this event the volunteers had to aid students with
exceptionalities with their coursework and help with the campus tour. I had a few pre–conceived
notions before attending the event I thought the students were going to be similar to other high
schoolers, yet they really were not. They were very well behaved in the University Center and
during their tour. I knew before attending the event I would have to use positive reinforcement. I
remember the poker chip video every time I am dealing with students. I also thought during the
event I wouldn't have any fun. I was wrong. I made a new friend and a new sister.
Furthermore, I learned 3 things while working with the students with exceptionalities: patience is
the key, good volume and positivity can change a moment, and a little help goes a long way.
While observing, I got paired with a male student. This student was very quiet when I approached
him. He was working on a science worksheet where he had to cut out pieces then glue the pieces
next to its proper name. I was instructed to help him, but he had the cutting part all wrapped up by
the time I went over to help him. I praised him for cutting all the pieces and cleaning up his mess.
I allowed him to paste the pieces on the page and then we reviewed together. He was very
intelligent, he was able to show me each part of the cell, correctly. From this experience my attitude
toward students with exceptionalities has changed. I do not find them as "scary" anymore.

of individuals who have experienced the phenomenon.
Data Collection
I collected data through surveys and focus group discussions. I used a purposive sample to select the
participants for this study. As soon as the service–learning project was completed, each student who
had participated was asked to complete an online survey so that I could gauge their satisfaction with
the service–learning project. Thirty–two students out of the total of 50 completed the survey (a 64%
response rate).
Three 90–minute focus group discussions were conducted with a total of 26 consenting students to
probe their experience with and opinions about the service–learning project. Students were
approached and asked to voluntarily participate in the focus group discussions on the last day of the
academic quarter. Inclusion criteria consisted of willingness to be interviewed and participation in
the service–learning project. Of the 26 focus group participants, 13 were first–year students and 13
were second–year students. Twenty of the participants were ages 16 to 24 years; five were between
the ages of 25 and 34; one was between 45 and 54 years of age. Participants were

Conclusions
Within the Service Learning Project, I have learned quite a few things. I have learned that I know a
lot more about history then I ever imagined I knew. I can explain events and facts than ever before,
but most importantly I learned that the government and society begins with myself. I have a duty
and role within Society and the United States government to act morally and defend our nation.
According to this week's readings and videos,
The nature of man is found in writings of Plato but is also found in the Christian bible. It is the
responsibility of human nature to accept the responsibility of themselves. We live in the greatest

The Importance Of Service-Learning
It is also a "boundary spanning" activity in that it requires active involvement from people both
within and outside of the classroom context, often resulting in participant contributors who represent
a variety of generations, ethnicities, social groups, and experience levels (Billig and Furco, 2002,
p.vii). Service–learning is designed to reduce the boundaries between an institutional campus
environment and the community around it. It is designed to connect learning to real experience
through service and reflection (Ball and Schilling, 2006; Becker, 2000). As a baseline to facilitate
this development, service–learning is distinct from other types of community service and civic
engagement experiences in that the service–learning experience must not only have a service and
reflective component but also be clearly tied to the curriculum through learning objectives and
theoretical underpinnings (Bloomquist, 2015; Pritchard, 2001). As Barbara Holland, former
Director of the U.S. National Service–Learning Clearinghouse, shared, "Service–learning is all in the
hyphen. It is the enrichment of specific learning goals through structured community service
opportunities that respond to community–identified needs and opportunities." (Kenworthy–U'Ren,
Taylor, and Petri, 2006: 121).

the perfect place to ask my cousin to participate in my project and make him feel comfortable

Pros And Cons Of Service Learning
Service learning is like community service integrated with academic study in which students are
actively learning about their society. There are more pros than cons in service learning. Service
learning give students the opportunity to learn about their community. These individuals can gain
the ability to work well with others. This allow participants to develop connection with peers and
adults outside their family. Service learning help students apply what they learn in class to real–life

Service Learning Essay Example

  • 1. Essay On Service Learning Service learning is a great new experience for college students. Students better themselves by participating in this program, but everyone has a different input on how they feel about it. Service learning could really help those that feel lost with their major or direction of life in general. By implementing a service learning requirement for all RCBC students to graduate it will create a positive change because it benefits the community, students may discover they love volunteering long–term, and students will also gain experience and course credits. Initially, implementing a service learning requirement for all RCBC students to graduate creates a positive change because it benefits the community: both parties benefit from it....show more content... This will lead to students partaking in community service in their free time which is always a major positive and something everyone should be involved in. Scott Seider, Samantha Rabinowicz, and Susan Gillmor talk about service–learning in "Differential Outcomes for American College Students Engaged in Community Service–Learning Involving Youth and Adults". The authors also state "Students achieve a greater awareness of social issues and a deeper commitment to community involvement" (Seider, Rabinowicz, & Gilmore). The authors of the article also use Kendrick, Markus, Howard, and King as references for the quote. By helping the community, a person has a deeper relationship and a better understanding of it. This program also creates a solid activity they can add to their resume. Someone with an engineering major might start this and change their whole major because of service learning, realizing what they have a passion for. "Colleges are best–poised to create in their students a lifelong commitment to volunteering even a few hours a month" (Eggers). By going monthly, some students create a schedule in which they include volunteering. If they go on to do it for years, it becomes a part of their day to day routines, volunteering really changes a person for the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay On Service Learning Service Learning Project The service day on April 5th, really gave me a precious opportunity to have access to the life and health of immigrant persons from South America and their priorities in life as well as their consideration about health. This is my first time to help so many immigrant persons from South America check their blood pressure, height and body weight, and give them information about how to have access to free clinical and blood pressure control as well as weight management. I really thank Professor Raja, because it was she who gave us this precious experience to do service for and know this special population in USA. Even though health status is quite important for plenty of people in USA, it unfortunately became the ...show more content... For men, preventive care should be focused on cessation of smoking and alcohol using and diet for men. Males in this target group told me that they work long hours on physically demanding jobs each day, but their diet is unhealthy because of financial issues and they smoke and drink a lot because of great pressure on them. Men who were checked had generally high blood pressure and BMI. For women in this population, they told me they spent much time at home taking care of their children and purchase cheap fast food. Their blood pressure and BMI both were also very high. I asked them whether they purchased health insurance, but many of them just slipped away or did not want to tell me, but some of them did have interest in free clinical service. Many of them told me that they like spicy food and Cola, so for them, they should be encouraged to cook healthy food with low sodium and more vegetables, eat less fast food and maintain regular exercise everyday. For those men who smoke or drink a lot, they need to be encouraged to cut down on them as soon as possible. According to the research of Otiniano et al. (2003), Mexican Americans were reported to have a greater incidence of heart attack related to high blood pressure and obesity, but had a decreased prevalence of self–reported heart attack than Non–Hispanic whites due to the low socioeconomic status and less education. It seems that low socioeconomic status and less education are the major Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Service Learning Paper Sociology 101 MWF 11:00–11:50 Service Learning Paper Fox Valley Humane Association Service Learning Project I decided to start volunteering at the local humane society because I've always been really passionate about animals and wanted to start benefiting them in the community. Prior to my service I was delighted because I've wanted to start volunteering for years and was glad the opportunity had presented itself. Throughout my experience I learned a great deal and met a lot of new people. Even though I've only just started serving my time at the Fox Valley Humane Association I can truly see the difference it has made in the community. I started out by attending an orientation for new volunteers. During this time I filled out...show more content... He came to the shelter seeking to find his cat. He told me how he had decided to end things with his girlfriend and that the day after his cat was missing. Turns out his girlfriend proceeded to break into his house and steal his cat along with all the cats' things. I had to break the news that she had brought the cat here to be euthanized. I then helped him gather his Louie Viton cat carrier (Goes to show how much he truly loved his cat), his beloved cat's toys, blanket, and bed. This guy was a mess and it was very hard to experience. This concludes that along with all of the many good memories that came out of the volunteering experience at the shelter it isn't all rainbows and smiles. I learned many things from my experience while volunteering at the Fox Valley Humane Association. One of those is how much my time really does matter. While completing tasks like laundry, dishes, greeter, and collecting donations out at the mall I realized how much one person can contribute. By helping out with these tasks I prevented the staff from doing it. If volunteers weren't present someone would still need to do the work which would have been taking away from staff duties. The staff has other duties to tend to such as tending sick animals, preforming spaying and neutering, declawing, and working at the desk. These are important to the animal's health and if the staff were always busy completing tasks volunteers do there wouldn't be time to tend Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Service Learning Journal Example Part 1 The first week of service learning at Jessie Keet Pre–Primary School was very overwhelming and yet also motivating. I observed a community where children are in great need of love and affection because they do not seem to get it anywhere else. Most of the children are raised in single–parent households. Their parent(s) work hard during the day to provide for the family and then they are too tired at night to give the children the attention and love that they need. This leads to the fact that the children behave in ways to attract attention to themselves. They will run around, shout or treat each other violently, like hitting each other, pulling hair and making nasty comments. The teachers have classes with over 30 children in a...show more content... They continually disrupt because they want more attention. A specific incident that led to my negative emotions was when I was sitting at one of the tables in the grade R class. The children each received a paper with the numbers 1–10 on it. In the middle of the table was a heap of those squares that are used to tie a bread bag. The children got the instruction from their teacher, Felicity Thomas, to pack the correct number of squares above the correct number i.e. the number 1 will have one square above it, the number 2 will have two squares above it and so forth. Most of the children at the table where loud, disruptive and did not really pay attention to the project. I was sitting next to a very quiet boy who did not really want to speak to me or to anyone. I could see that he was concentrating very hard to do the task correctly. He was taking much longer than some of the other children in the class that finished the task. My attention was divided because I tried to maintain order and to get the children at the table to each at least try to complete the task while at the same time struggling to help those few who actually tried. The teacher was walking around and writing the names of all the children who finished their task in her book. This led to the fact that the children were competing with each other and bragging about it when they finished successfully. The teacher rang a bell and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This really led me to feel very comfortable and feel like I have been there before and a person has become part of the school, which just made me very happy that they were exited about seeing a young student who wanted to do service learning and learn from the service learning but also be able to apply sociological concepts, theories and gain observation from the actual experience. The students were very nice overall, but did constantly ask me why I was there and when I explained it to them what I was there and why then they were very understanding and were meeting me halfway to getting things Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Service-Learning In Service–Learning and Academic Success: The Links to Retention Research, Dan Simonet puts forth the idea, that students more involved in their learning benefit socially and academically. His writing uses a formal approach to inform educators about the ways that Service–Learning can improve the academic success and retention of their students. Explaining one of the advantages for educators, Simonet suggests that service–learning can be a tool to help create "positive relationships" with their students (1). Simonet uses climax to organize and present his evidence, providing various examples of research throughout the article, to further the claim that service–learning increases student retention and bolsters their academic success. • 7. My Experience At My Service Learning Site Essay One of the richest experiences that I had while at my service learning site was working with an English as a second language group. This group was filled with students who had just moved to the area and who were not fluent in English. I was fortunate enough to be able to work with this group in their ELA class and their Science class. This group was able to teach me so much about myself and they were also able to help me see how different my life was from theirs. When I began volunteering at the Edward F Parthum Jr Middle school two years ago, I believed that I would be able to connect with the students because I was raised by a single mother. I was raised in a very affluent town, however, by no stretch of the imagination was I rich. I thought that my financial situation and home status would allow me to connect with these students because I felt that my life was similar to theirs. I was soon shown that I was very wrong about my assumption. The students that I work with have a much worse like than I did. Many of these students do not receive support from their families because their parents work two jobs. I realized that many of these individuals did not receive support at home after watching them get their first science exam back. When I was working with the students the previous week, the teacher printed out study guides for each student and then she called each student's parents to ask that they encourage their students to study. • 8. Example Of Service Learning Reflection Service Learning Reflection Sarah N. Johnson Saint Anselm College Service Learning Reflection Sarah N. Johnson Saint Anselm College I completed my service learning at The Arbors of Bedford, a nursing home for older adults suffering with memory loss due to dementia. Their mission is to care for the whole person in a manner that promotes freedom, choice and the opportunity to live a meaningful life (n.a., 2017). The Arbors of Bedford promotes a therapeutic environment by creating an open and welcome environment and by giving the residents as much choice in their lives as possible. For example, they can choose whether to sit by the window in a seat by themselves, or in a living room chair with a group of people. There is usually a television or music playing in one section, while another section is quiet which allows the residents to choose the setting that is best for them. They host a variety of activities that focus on different therapy areas. The activities offered include listening to spiritual hymns, tai chi, craft designs, piano performances, and invention trivia. These components together, along with a caring and competent staff, allow The Arbors of Bedford to fulfill their mission statement. In order to develop a therapeutic relationship with the residents I use active listening skills to communicate effectively with them and I practice empathy to make them feel understood. • 9. Service Learning Essay The Society for Experiential Education defines service learning as, "any carefully monitored service experience in which a student has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what he or she is learning throughout the experience" (Staton 1). Service learning is a great opportunity to get extra learning experiences while also experiencing the community around the universities campus. "Service learning allows students to apply what they are learning from their instructors, peers, and readings to genuine tasks that occur outside the four walls of the classroom while simultaneously helping others" (Staton 1). Universities are using service learning to expand beyond the classroom and provide students with experiences that will...show more content... To most universities a respectable opinion in the public's eye is very important. Service learning will definitely make a great impression in people's minds. In fact, some students are looking for a school that will give them the opportunity to impact the community surrounding the campus. Also, with all the community service being done by the students the community is more likely to support the universities different aspects, (ie. sporting events and academic grants). With all the support from the outside community the university will gain recognition making it a more popular school to attend. And obviously, the more students a university has the more service projects it can do. One concern of universities that are considering adding service learning is that not enough students will be interested in participating. There are several ways to get students interested in service learning. One way to get their attention is to give students who participate extra benefits. Some examples of extra benefits would be extra credit in their courses or even offering free credit hours. Another thing that would appeal to students is that the class would meet less often because one on the classes meeting times would be their service learning project. Another benefit of service learning is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Service Learning : Teaching And Learning Service Learning Service Learning is defined as a teaching and learning method that allows students to integrate with the community. It is an idea to learn, experience and improve oneself while interacting with other foreign students. Through this experience, we can acknowledge different perspectives, values and diversities between two countries. For my service learning, I engaged in international events held at KCC, such as International Game Week and International Fair. Through these experiences and obstacles that I encountered along the way, it impacted the way I associate with others, which includes my behaviors, my manner, and my attitudes. I will also pass on the great virtues of Confucius. This society consists of many people from different backgrounds and cultures. At certain activities, students are required to cooperate with one another. My service learning project is to assist international students to know about other cultures. The International Game Week was held at the library. At this event, my job was to organize a game and invite students toplay. I had to learn how to play the game and be able to teach it to others. As an assistant, when there is more than one student, I would let the students play while communicating with them. The purpose of this event was not about winning prizes, but to enjoy the activities and make new friends from different cultures and backgrounds. At the International Fair, my job was to organize a Chinese cultural table along with Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Essay On Service Learning I agree with implementing a service learning requirement for all RCBC students to graduate is a positive change. Service–learning is a teaching and learning that are a meaningful community service in which an individual learns to get involved in meaningful services by working on projects that will make a difference. There are several kinds of service learning activities which one is suited best is depends on the individual. The goals of service learning are enhanced social and academic learning, develop character, citizenship skills, and learn about the issues. Such characters are essential for the graduating student. It is valuable work that impacts the student and the community. In my opinion, a mandated service–learning requirement for RCBC students is a positive change because it is given to the community, develops the character of students, and teaches the student practical skills. The service learning such as meaningful community work is beneficial for the students. One kind of learning is direct service learning in which the students' service directly impacts individuals that receive the service from the student. It involves things such as tutoring other ...show more content... This will let them the problem people face around them, and then what it takes to solve this problem. This inspires the students to learn about problems around them and solve them. This could help them gain in problem–solving skills, and boost their self–esteem. Moreover, these activities provide the internal satisfaction that is highly Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Service Learning Project Examples The meaning this service learning project provided me with was how important it is for us, the Hamline University, to build a meaningful relationship with Hamline Elementary. This was invoked because of the impact the students seemed to have due to us being there and working with them. The students were excited for a communal learning experience, and I think that is going to help encourage them to pursue a college career. Because I work at Hamline Elementary and have been doing so for the past 2 years, I have made strong connections with the students and faculty and think highly of them all. The experience was very similar to what I do at Hamline Elementary on a daily basis. Given this, I had a feeling that the content may have been a bit of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

As a teacher, it is important to learn and be open–minded about students' backgrounds. In COE 202, my plan is to volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club and learn from my experience. It is important for me to volunteer because I need to experience what my future career will be like. Service learning can help one learn new things about what one's interested in. The Boys and Girls Club is a good opportunity for me to see what it is like working with kids from low income families. Some social problem and issues that I may encounter in this service learning is lower income children are not getting enough funding for their school; therefore, there are not enough teachers or staff to teach the kids. Classroom may be overcrowded which can lead to the lack of affection teachers have for their students. • 15. Reflection On Service Learning Experience Service Learning Reflection During my course I was instructed that I had to attend volunteering. I attended three very different events. One involving students with exceptionalities, the second involving younger children, and lastly, I would classify the last one as a rewarding opportunity. This essay should be regarded as a reflection of my service. It contains the details of each event I attended, what I learned, and the activities I had to do at each event. Lastly, I intend to evaluate the overall service learning hour project. The first event I chose to attend was a volunteering opportunity helping students with exceptionalities. This event took place on November 9th, 2017 at Clayton State University. The event was presented by Dr. Mandy Lusk. For this event the volunteers had to aid students with exceptionalities with their coursework and help with the campus tour. I had a few pre–conceived notions before attending the event I thought the students were going to be similar to other high schoolers, yet they really were not. They were very well behaved in the University Center and during their tour. I knew before attending the event I would have to use positive reinforcement. I remember the poker chip video every time I am dealing with students. I also thought during the event I wouldn't have any fun. I was wrong. I made a new friend and a new sister. Furthermore, I learned 3 things while working with the students with exceptionalities: patience is the key, good volume and positivity can change a moment, and a little help goes a long way. While observing, I got paired with a male student. This student was very quiet when I approached him. He was working on a science worksheet where he had to cut out pieces then glue the pieces next to its proper name. I was instructed to help him, but he had the cutting part all wrapped up by the time I went over to help him. I praised him for cutting all the pieces and cleaning up his mess. I allowed him to paste the pieces on the page and then we reviewed together. He was very intelligent, he was able to show me each part of the cell, correctly. From this experience my attitude toward students with exceptionalities has changed. I do not find them as "scary" anymore. The Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Data Collection I collected data through surveys and focus group discussions. I used a purposive sample to select the participants for this study. As soon as the service–learning project was completed, each student who had participated was asked to complete an online survey so that I could gauge their satisfaction with the service–learning project. Thirty–two students out of the total of 50 completed the survey (a 64% response rate). Three 90–minute focus group discussions were conducted with a total of 26 consenting students to probe their experience with and opinions about the service–learning project. Students were approached and asked to voluntarily participate in the focus group discussions on the last day of the academic quarter. Inclusion criteria consisted of willingness to be interviewed and participation in the service–learning project. Of the 26 focus group participants, 13 were first–year students and 13 were second–year students. I have learned that I know a lot more about history then I ever imagined I knew. I can explain events and facts than ever before, but most importantly I learned that the government and society begins with myself. I have a duty and role within Society and the United States government to act morally and defend our nation. • 18. The Importance Of Service-Learning It is also a "boundary spanning" activity in that it requires active involvement from people both within and outside of the classroom context, often resulting in participant contributors who represent a variety of generations, ethnicities, social groups, and experience levels (Billig and Furco, 2002, p.vii). Service–learning is designed to reduce the boundaries between an institutional campus environment and the community around it. It is designed to connect learning to real experience through service and reflection (Ball and Schilling, 2006; Becker, 2000). As a baseline to facilitate this development, service–learning is distinct from other types of community service and civic engagement experiences in that the service–learning experience must not only have a service and reflective component but also be clearly tied to the curriculum through learning objectives and theoretical underpinnings (Bloomquist, 2015; Pritchard, 2001). As Barbara Holland, former Director of the U.S. National Service–Learning Clearinghouse, shared, "Service–learning is all in the hyphen. It is the enrichment of specific learning goals through structured community service opportunities that respond to community–identified needs and opportunities." (Kenworthy–U'Ren, Taylor, and Petri, 2006: 121). The first site my cousin and I had our activity in was in my home in Boyle Heights, where we had a conversation about his diabetes and talked about his experiences with type1 diabetes as a teenager. I decided to choose my home as our first activity because it was the perfect place to ask my cousin to participate in my project and make him feel comfortable enough to share his experiences with me.
