3. First, a heretical and audacious statement:
The Structure of CID Governance and
Management, in its current form, is at its very
best, fragile and, at worst, broken beyond
repair.
True of False?
Why?

8. The Story
As he stared out the picture window from his office, Andrew
O'Brien wondered how it had come to this. Tomorrow would be the
one-year anniversary of his promotion to CEO. It would also be the
first board meeting where he would be accountable for the results of
an entire fiscal year. Those results, as he had grown accustomed to
saying, were "unspectacular at best.” Andrew could not deny that he
was at a low point in his brief tenure as CEO, a point he never
expected to reach so soon. Then things got worse. In this stunning
business fiction debut, Patrick Lencioni delivers a powerful wake-up
call to all of us who dare to lead. Young, ambitious, and
overwhelmed Andrew O'Brien personifies a part of every leader as
he wanders in search of the elusive silver bullet that will propel him
to success. He happens upon an unlikely guide who distills the
seemingly infinite list of leadership perils into the five temptations of
a CEO.
9. The Story (cont’d)
In an intense and often combative exchange, the two debate
fundamental issues faced by all leaders-issues involving personal
integrity and effectiveness in the ongoing struggle for success. While
some of these topics have been bandied about in the leadership
literature for years, here they actually begin to make sense.
Refreshingly original and utterly compelling, Andrew's story
(written to be read in one sitting) will be enjoyed, remembered, and
reread for years to come. It serves as a timeless and potent reminder
that success as a leader can come down to practicing a few simple
behaviors-behaviors that are painfully difficult for each of us to
master. (From the front flap of the book)
10. The Model
Temptation #1: Status over Results
Temptation #2: Popularity over Accountability
Temptation #3: Certainty over Clarity
Temptation #4: Harmony over Conflict
Temptation #5: Invulnerability over Trust
12. #5: Invulnerability over Trust
Everything begins with trust
Very fragile – difficult to build, easy to break
Societal and business norms frown on
vulnerability
Taking the risk of getting burned
It’s ok to be wrong!!
An element of checking ego at the door
Makes you human, more accessible, more
authentic to those you lead
13. #4: Harmony over Conflict
Seeking to “keep the peace”
Sometimes used as a control device
The need to “couch” your words or thoughts to
avoid offending
“If everyone in the room is thinking the same
thing….” - Gen. G. S. Patton
Healthy, passionate debate filters out weak
ideas, creating stronger, better outcomes
Must maintain respect for others at all times
14. #3: Certainty over Clarity
Never having enough info to decide
No one has 100% of the necessary info to make
a decision; It’s often less than 25%
No decision is very much a decision
“A good plan executed now….” - Patton
Foresight – the ability to “see around corners”
Don’t get hung up on semantics or minutiae
Solicit unfiltered input from those around you
Trust your instinct, intuition, gut
15. #2: Popularity over Accountability
The need to be liked
Fear of confrontation
You should love your people, but not be close
friends with them
Set forth clear expectations in terms of results
Adopt a “Primus Inter Pares” model:
as opposed to:
16. #1: Status over Results
Position over payoff
“Do you know who I am?” That’s always
helpful….
You never “arrive”
“You can be somebody, or you can do
something….” - Col. John Boyd
Are you willing to be unknown, yet highly
successful?
Servant Leadership is a better way
17. Wrap Up
Memorize the Model
It all starts with TRUST
“People don’t care how much you know until
they know how much you care” - Maxwell
Check ego in a meaningful, non-Animal Farm
way
Set up your organizational structure to allow
honest, candid input and transparent thought
Care about RESULTS, because that is the only
way you can continue to effect CHANGE
18. Bonus!! Rolf’s 7 Tips for CEOs
1. Elicit Trust. “People don’t care how much you
know until they know how much you care.”
2. Develop an Inner Circle
1. Folks who will tell you if your house is on fire
2. What you need to hear; not what you want to
hear
3. Actively seek Personal Growth. 3 key ways:
1. The people you meet
2. The books you read
3. The seminars and conferences you attend
19. Rolf’s 7 Tips (cont’d)
4. Seek the best and highest for your Staff; They’ll
help you with your dream when you help them
with theirs
5. Be a Vision Caster – Articulate vision & set
goals; Ask for input on how to fulfill them
6. Bad Karma is a b**** – don’t set yourself up
for it; You’re better than that!
7. Servant Leadership is the most arrogant, self-
serving, self-preserving form of leadership there
is. You make it about you when you make it
about others
20. An Opportunity. . . .
There are over 300,000 Community
Associations in the United States
Tens of millions of people live in them
Tens of thousands of people work for them
Greenleaf – “The Institution as Servant”
We have a chance to put a dent in the universe
if those who are willing will rise up to the
challenge of becoming Servant Leaders
It’s up to us….
