Summer Fun
Janine has written an essay about why she loves summer, but her ideas are not
grouped in an orderly way. Read her essay. Choose which of the headings you think each
paragraph belongs under. Write the letter of the heading on the line.
Introductory Paragraph: Summer is the best time of year, because without the demand of
school, there are so many great things that you can do with your time. Here are four of my
favorites.

1. _____ Swimming is my favorite sport. I learned how to swim when I was very little, and have
loved summer ever since. I prefer to swim in the summer because the outdoor pools are open
from Memorial Day to Labor Day. When you swim outside you get the sun on your skin, which
helps your body to make vitamin D.
2. _____Summer is also a great time to visit family and friends that you don’t always get to see
as much as you want to during the year. When all the kids are out of school, it’s easier to get
away. Plus, my mother says that everyone she works with is allowed to take leave during the
summer.
3. _____While I love the hot, summer weather, I have to admit that there are days when I have
just had my fill of the heat. On those days I like to take advantage of having long stretches of
time to hang out in the air‐conditioned house.
4. _____Summer is a great time for road trips. A lot of people drive across country in the
summer. There are so many great campsites and tourist attractions in this country, and driving
gives you the freedom to stop anywhere you want to.
5. _____Summer is also a great time to fly if you are going very far away, because it’s unlikely
that your flight will be delayed due to bad weather. It’s a good idea to buy tickets in advance,
but sometimes you can also get great last‐minutes deals if you like to do things on the spur of
the moment.
6. _____I love to read, and if I’m in the mood for it I can read several novels a week in the
summer. It’s easy, because I’m not interrupted by homework, and there’s plenty of time to read
all day and still get my chores done. Other things I like to do inside are play board games with
my sister, and bake cookies.
7. _____Last but not least, summer is the time of year to take it easy. I like to chill out in the
hammock in the shade. I also like to sit on the beach and gaze out into the ocean, just being
quiet and still.
