Asteroid Apophis 99942

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Goodmorning everyone, im here today to have my informative speech about an asteriod colliding the earth
  2. . First of all what is Asteroid?. ASTEROIDS  are large rocky or metal bodies that originate in the relatively warm inner solar system, in the region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
  3. So I chose this topic because ever since, I am really into science and when I found out about this asteriod, which is said to collide the earth on April 13, 2029, I got really curuios if this will really happen and which one is actually true, the end of the world because of this asteriod on 2029 or 2012? As for me, the movie “2012” is not that 100% true, since it wasnt really predicted, but as for this asteriod, the N.A.S.A assured us that there;s posibliity, it will hit us. So the he important thing about my topic is to warn/discuss about this asteriod which is said to collide the earth in the near future which will also give you an idea on what we should do about it.
  4. In Egyptian myth, asteroid was named after an ancient Egyptian prophecy Apophis was the ancient spirit of evil and destruction, a demon that was determined to plunge the world into eternal darkness.
  5. Hundreds of scientists around the world are working on projects to try and intercept asteroid 99942 "Apophis" and predict its trajectory more accurately. Experts have announced that the object "could" hit Earth on April 13th, 2029. The impact would unleash a explosion "100,000 times" more powerful than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. A fitting name, astronomers reasoned, for a menace now hurtling towards Earth from outer space. Scientists are monitoring the progress of a 390-metre wide equivalent to 1,280 ft
  6. asteroid discovered in 2004 that is potentially on a collision course with our planet, and are imploring governments to decide on a strategy for dealing with it. Apophis first made news in june 19 2004 discorved by Roy A. Tucker, David J. Tholen and Fabrizio Bernardi and the Kitt Peak. when it was found to be moving in a trajectory that brought it significantly close to the Earth. At that time it was known as 2004MN4,and it passed by us harmlessly. On this day, however, Apophis is not expected to live up to its namesake, the ancient Egyptian god of darkness and destruction. Scientists are 99.7 percent certain it will pass at a distance of 18,800 to 20,800 miles. In astronomical terms, 20,000 miles is a mere stone's throw, shorter than a round-trip flight from New York to Melbourne, Australia, and well inside the orbits of Earth's many geosynchronous communications satellites. For a couple of hours after dusk, people in Europe, Africa and western Asia will see what looks like a medium-bright star creeping westward through the constellation of Cancer, making Apophis the first asteroid in human history to be clearly visible to the naked eye. And then it will be gone, having vanished into the dark vastness of space. We will have dodged a cosmic bullet.  Maybe. Scientists calculate that if Apophis passes at a distance of exactly 18,893 miles, it will go through a "gravitational keyhole." This small region in space only about a half mile wide, or twice the diameter of the asteroid itself--is where Earth's gravity would perturb Apophis in just the wrong way, causing it to enter an orbit seven-sixths as long as Earth's. In other words, the planet will be squarely in the crosshairs for a potentially catastrophic asteroid impact precisely seven years later, on April 13, 2036.
  7. Kinetic Energy Objects like asteroids and comets may be deflected by hitting them with a high-speed spacecraft. Kinetic energy, or energy from motion, turns into an explosion of the object's material. As the material blows away from the object, it pushes like rocket exhaust to move it off course, preventing an impact with Earth. Kinetic energy equals the speed-of-impact-squared times mass.
  8.   ION Thursters The ion propulsion system will provide the spacecraft with the thrust that it will require to reach its target asteroids. The demanding mission profile would be impossible without the ion engines , even a mission only to asteroid would require a much larger spacecraft and a dramatically larger launch vehicle. Ion propulsion was proved on NASA's Deep Space 1 mission, which tested it and 11 other technologies while journeying to an asteroid and a comet. The thrusters work by using an electrical charge to accelerate ions from xenon fuel to a speed 10 times that of chemical engines. The electrical level and xenon fuel feed can be adjusted to throttle each engine up or down. The engines are thrifty with fuel,
  9. A gravity tractor (GT) is a   spacecraft  that deflects another object in space, typically a  potentially hazardous asteroid  that might impact Earth, without physically contacting it, using only its  gravitational field  to transmit the required  impulse . The tractor spacecraft could either hover near the object being deflected or orbit near it. The concept has the advantage that essentially nothing need be known about the mechanical composition and structure of the asteroid in advance.
  10. Nuclear explosion plan is the gravity tractor attaching to an asteroid and firing the craft's engines to push the space rock away using the nuclear missile. Because if they target the Asteroid it could cause widespread damage.
  11. And as for my conclusion. There are more ways to stop this collision. Its called Solar Sail and Robort munch   Solar sail using the sun's powerful wind of energy against an incoming asteroid plays a crucial role in several deflection strategies. Take, for instance, sending a spacecraft to attach a giant solar sail to the surface of a near-Earth asteroid. This structure, once unfurled, would reflect solar radiation and gently push an asteroid away from its original destination.   And Robort munch The idea is to send nuclear-powered robots to a threatening asteroid, where they'd land and begin mining or "chewing" into the surface of the rock. They would then eject these fragments into space at high speed via electromagnets.
  12. As for us ordinary people, we all know that we cant do something really huge about this matter, but simple stuff can actually help when it comes to preventing this asteriod from collision. First, just always be updated with what is happening about this asteriod. Try to find a way to search about apophis and get the latest updates with the help of N A S A. A simple care about this matter would really make a difference. It isnt just for your own protection, but also for the millions of people around you. Thats all. Thank you for listening! Have a nice day :D
