Casual or core – which are you?
Find out what sort of gamer you are by filling in this table. Look at the criteria
for a core gamer answer yes or no to the question and then support your
response with an example of how you consume you games – use specific
games and experiences.
CORE CRITERIA
YES/NO
Technologically savvy – YES
can you hook your console
to the net easily or upgrade
your PC?

Have the latest highend
computers/consoles –

NO

EVIDENCE
My Console is connected to the
internet, my PC has been upgraded
slightly (RAM upgrade).
I own an Xbox 360, but not a gaming
PC (I have a Mac).

which consoles/formats do
you own?

Willingness to pay to
YES
play – how much would you
invest in a new game or
console?

Prefer violent/action
games – are you more

To an extend, will not pay double for
a limited edition games etc, however
will spend some money an Xbox Live
Account

YES

I mainly play more violent games
than child-friendly games.

YES

I like a game to be hard enough that
it is too easy, but not too hard that I
get frustrated.

NO

1-2 hours max each session, or I
generally get bored.

NO

I don’t look into games or read
gaming articles.

NO

Occasionally talk about games with
friends, but not a common topic.

YES

I like to play a game to complete it,
but I don’t like to rush through it.

Bioshock than Angry Birds?

Prefer games that have
depth and complexity –
do you like a challenge?

Play games over many
long sessions – long haul
or short bursts?

Hunger for gamingrelated information – do
you use game related
website or read game
magazines?

Discuss games with
friends/bulletin boards –
is this a common topic of
conversation with your on
and offline friends?

Play for the exhilaration
of defeating (or
completing) the game –
do you try to play to
completion?
Much more tolerant of
frustration – how long do

YES

I occasionally get angry at a game,
but most of the time I’m relaxed
when I play games.

NO

Not really, level/score doesn’t matter
much to me.

you give a game if it’s hard
to play?

Engaged in competition
with themselves, the
game, and other
players – do you strive
to get the high-scores
and be the best?
HARDORE OR
CASUAL?

In between, I’m more of a hardcore gamer
compared to other people, but much less than
others. I’d say Casual.
