• According to many historian studies, the
origin of the Madhubani painting can be
traced back to the Ramayana era when
Sita’s father, Raja Janaka request that a
large number of artists should decorate
the whole kingdom with this form of art
during Sita’s wedding. This is one of the
reasons why the Madhubani paintings are
often based on religious themes like the
paintings of gods like Lord Krishna and
scenes from the Ramayana era. This is
one of the reasons why the Madhubani
paintings are often seen in most religious
households.

• The Madhubani paintings are often
painted with fingers, twigs and
matchsticks and also pen nibs in recent
times. It is often painted with natural
bright colors which are often made using
a paste of cow dung and mud to provide
it with a better texture. The outline of the
painting usually has its framework made
from rice paste. The juice of kusum flower
is often used for crimson hue, blue from
indigo, turmeric extract for yellow, red
from sandalwood and so on. The artists
often used different natural materials for
their color needs.

• Before 1930, the rare Madhubani
paintings were not known to people that
lived outside the Madhubani region. But
in 1934, the city of Bihar experienced a
major earthquake and a British officer of
the Madhubani area who admired Indian
art and culture noticed these unique arts
on the damaged walls of Madhubani
during his inspection. The officer’s name
was William G. Archer and he was the
one that introduced this unique art to the
people that reside outside Madhubani.

• This fact is not known to many but
Madhubani artists use the Madhubani art
as a way to prevent trees from being cut
down. This unique art was not created
just for decorations, Madhubani artists
make these paintings on trees depicting
Hindu gods and strong religious beliefs in
the region prevents people from cutting
them down.

• This is one of the reasons why the
Madhubani art is famous in the modern
world. These paintings often have
geometric patterns and bright colors.
These geometric patterns are often used
to symbolize valor, devotion, love,

• The artists of Madhubani often make use
of bold hues in order to draw geometric
patterns and floral designs. One of the
things that make this unique art famous is

• Since the creation of this unique form of
art, the Madhubani painting have been
used to decorate walls of houses in the
Madhubani area. It was a tradition for the
Madhubani people. It was often done by
the women during special occasions. In
the modern world, the Madhubani art has
also been used to design textile products
like sarees, dupattas and salwar suits.

• The Madhubani paintings are often drawn
according to a fixed theme and
accordingly lines, patterns and symbols
are drawn by the Madhubani artists. For
example, the fish symbol is often used to
represent fertility, procreation and good
luck while peacocks are often used to
symbolize religion, love and romance and
serpents stand are often used to represent
divine protectors.
