Monitoring
Mechanism
Monitoring Type
• Labour sheets are properly maintained or not
• Account keeping is properly or not
• Stock maintenance properly or not
• Community contribution
• Technical aspects of structures
• POP of crops like SRI, Organic etc.
• Community participation: regular meetings, savings, material
management etc.
Monitoring Tools: Weekly Meeting registers, MIS at office level,
Farmers Diary, Field Staffs Registers, Field Movement Registers, Stock
registers, bank book, account book etc.
Major areas of satisfaction
 Response of the community is encouraging. In all the 4 villages the
community timely support , commitment by the CI leaders , voluntary
involvement is satisfactory.
 The exposure trip on DBI benefits to the site of the NGO RCDC at
Balangir district was an eye opener for the team and the community.
The immediate outcome was the mindset of the people was changed
and we got the desired support to execute the project activities.
 Mobilising community contribution of Rs.42,000/ in just two months
in the new villages where nobody knew us was a great area of
satisfaction for our team.
 we tried for 31 this time and till then all the 31 families are excited to
learn with this new method of paddy farming after a big resistance. In
one plot we have demonstrated both the methods of transplantation
line and square for the farmers to compare the yield between the
traditional and these two methods.
Issues & Challenges
1. Alcoholism is a tradition among tribes and was a hurdle for us to
get the involvement of male members in meetings, survey, training
exposure, execution etc.
2. Friday which is the market day, during summer there are so many
festivals which disrupted the project implementation.
3. The Divisional Forest Officer and Range Officers are not updated
with the latest FRA guidelines which delayed the approval to
intervene in the reserved forests.
Learning.............
 Learning how to handle the Govt. Babus like DFO, RFO & RI for land
clearance for the project. Building relationship at every level and
approaching after preparation( study of the FRA guidelines, consulting
other NGOs) really worked. Following up without proper preparation
and building pressure didn’t work.
 Handling PRI members like Sarpanch & ward members to conduct
Pallisabha was also an interesting episode when they are from
different political parties and they don’t see any earning from this
work. Motivating through ex-sarpanch and other opinion leaders
`worked. Our sincerity, punctuality and honesty is also helped in
building the trust of the community at a faster pace.
Learning.....Continue
 Learned dealing with local traders for material arrangement.
Arrangement of water for construction work was a great challenge for
us, we collected water from a pool 3km far from the site. Exploring
option for tanks from road contractors and carrying through bullock
carts in the remote sites worked, as tractor pulled tanker was
expensive for our small works.
 Mobilisation of cash & labour by forming sub committees in village
level was the best lessons. Delegating the responsibility and sharing
the roles among the community members and the youth helped in
building ownership.
 By Staying at villages we become more trust worthy for them and
could able to learn about their living style, reasons which stops them
to accept our ideas, understand their thoughts.
Way Forward
 Develop relationship with forest department officers & get permission
from Forest department as soon as possible
 Completion of All DBI structures before Monsoon
 Develop Water distribution system so that water could reach at end
point
 Convergence with NABARD, MGNREGS, SC & ST Departments, Agri &
Horti department, BRLF etc.
 Strengthening of our village institutions
 Promote SRI & Horticulture activities on large scale to enhance
livelihood of community
 Strong Monitoring system
 Introduce kitchen garden concept
 Reduce Alcoholism
 Introduce MED activities like vermicomposting, NTFP collection &
storage
 Bank & market linkage

  • 6. Monitoring Mechanism Participatory monitoring of DBI Program LOCAL VILLAGE RESOURCE ERSON SRIJAN EXTERNAL PROFESSIONAL SRIJAN PROFESSIONALS HIRED EXPERTS Livo link professionals SDTT professionals NABARD OFFICIALS Community Institutions & GP persons Forest department officials
  • 7. Monitoring Mechanism Monitoring Type • Labour sheets are properly maintained or not • Account keeping is properly or not • Stock maintenance properly or not • Community contribution • Technical aspects of structures • POP of crops like SRI, Organic etc. • Community participation: regular meetings, savings, material management etc. Monitoring Tools: Weekly Meeting registers, MIS at office level, Farmers Diary, Field Staffs Registers, Field Movement Registers, Stock registers, bank book, account book etc.
  • 8. Major areas of satisfaction  Response of the community is encouraging. In all the 4 villages the community timely support , commitment by the CI leaders , voluntary involvement is satisfactory.  The exposure trip on DBI benefits to the site of the NGO RCDC at Balangir district was an eye opener for the team and the community. The immediate outcome was the mindset of the people was changed and we got the desired support to execute the project activities.  Mobilising community contribution of Rs.42,000/ in just two months in the new villages where nobody knew us was a great area of satisfaction for our team.  we tried for 31 this time and till then all the 31 families are excited to learn with this new method of paddy farming after a big resistance. In one plot we have demonstrated both the methods of transplantation line and square for the farmers to compare the yield between the traditional and these two methods.
  • 9. Issues & Challenges 1. Alcoholism is a tradition among tribes and was a hurdle for us to get the involvement of male members in meetings, survey, training exposure, execution etc. 2. Friday which is the market day, during summer there are so many festivals which disrupted the project implementation. 3. The Divisional Forest Officer and Range Officers are not updated with the latest FRA guidelines which delayed the approval to intervene in the reserved forests.
  • 10. Learning.............  Learning how to handle the Govt. Babus like DFO, RFO & RI for land clearance for the project. Building relationship at every level and approaching after preparation( study of the FRA guidelines, consulting other NGOs) really worked. Following up without proper preparation and building pressure didn’t work.  Handling PRI members like Sarpanch & ward members to conduct Pallisabha was also an interesting episode when they are from different political parties and they don’t see any earning from this work. Motivating through ex-sarpanch and other opinion leaders `worked. Our sincerity, punctuality and honesty is also helped in building the trust of the community at a faster pace.
  • 11. Learning.....Continue  Learned dealing with local traders for material arrangement. Arrangement of water for construction work was a great challenge for us, we collected water from a pool 3km far from the site. Exploring option for tanks from road contractors and carrying through bullock carts in the remote sites worked, as tractor pulled tanker was expensive for our small works.  Mobilisation of cash & labour by forming sub committees in village level was the best lessons. Delegating the responsibility and sharing the roles among the community members and the youth helped in building ownership.  By Staying at villages we become more trust worthy for them and could able to learn about their living style, reasons which stops them to accept our ideas, understand their thoughts.
  • 12. Way Forward  Develop relationship with forest department officers & get permission from Forest department as soon as possible  Completion of All DBI structures before Monsoon  Develop Water distribution system so that water could reach at end point  Convergence with NABARD, MGNREGS, SC & ST Departments, Agri & Horti department, BRLF etc.  Strengthening of our village institutions  Promote SRI & Horticulture activities on large scale to enhance livelihood of community  Strong Monitoring system  Introduce kitchen garden concept  Reduce Alcoholism  Introduce MED activities like vermicomposting, NTFP collection & storage  Bank & market linkage
  • 14. Exposure visit to Khaprakhol, RCDC
