• Canada’s ToothFairy: National Children’s Oral Health
Foundation® is dedicated to eliminating children’s
pain and suffering from preventable pediatric dental
disease and improve quality of life for at-risk
children.
• As Educator, Preventer and Protector, Canada's
ToothFairy drives systems change by delivering
proven programs and resources that expand access
to care and education, improve oral health literacy,
and promote overall wellness.

Current Conditions
Pediatric dental disease can have devastating
social and economic consequences for
vulnerable children and families.
• In Saskatchewan:
– Cavities are the most common chronic disease currently
affecting children
• SK has the third highest rate of day surgeries for
treating oral disease in Canada (behind Nunavut and
NWT)
– Over 3300 day surgeries are performed every 2 years in SK
to treat oral disease – essentially filings and extractions
due to cavities at an average cost of $1700 per child.
That’s 3.3 million health care dollars spent per year.
– 99% of those kids go under general anesthetic

– Besides the financial burden though, more importantly
is the impact it has on the children. Pain, difficulty
eating and sleeping, speech difficulties and poor self-
esteem.
– Our First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people experience
unacceptably high rates or oral disease, much higher
than in urban communities, with little access to dental
care.

Smile Drive
• SMILE Drive was an event held
throughout the month of April,
National Oral Health Month.
• We encouraged individuals and
groups to collect toothbrushes
and toothpaste for children in
need of these supplies.
All of the donations helped the people of Saskatchewan!
• Donations were given to local charities
like the Saskatoon Food Bank.

Canada’s ToothFairy is a national children’s oral health foundation
dedicated to eliminating children’s pain and suffering from preventable dental disease and improve quality of life for at-risk children.

Formed in the United States in 2006 as a collaborative effort of clinicians, academics, corporate leaders and caring individuals, America's ToothFairy supports the delivery of oral health education and care for children of all ages.
Now extending services into Canada as Canada’s Toothfairy they are reaching children all throughout North America.
Canada’s tooth fairy serves as an:
EDUCATOR about the importance of oral health;
PREVENTER of disease; and
PROTECTOR of children.
In May 2013: the Oral Health Coalition received a Presentation from Fern Ingber – CEO of America’s Tooth Fairy.
After some discussion and consideration, there was consensus from the oral health coalition members to pursue the concept of Canada’s very own tooth fairy and Saskatchewan being an Oral Health Zone.
The SDHA, volunteered to put our organization forward as the main applicant, and the SK Oral Health Coalition joined the application as a partner.
When Kellie and Leslie have meetings with the national oral health Childrens foundation, Kellie’s girls love hearing that she talked to the tooth fairy that day.
By joining forces, our vision was to create a world or - at least a Saskatchewan where no child suffers from preventable tooth decay.
We receive support from Canada’s tooth fairy includes in various ways:
Materials for community outreach activities
Fluoride and sealant products to prevent tooth decay and
Vital oral health education for all children and their families.
With Saskatchewan being an Oral Health Zone, Canada's ToothFairy can help us to bring together corporate and civic leaders, allied health professionals, educators and other caring individuals in a collaborative community-based approach, to effectively break the cycle of this disease.
So what does this mean for you??

This spring, as part of Oral Health Month, donations of oral health supplies were requested from dental professionals, dental practices, the public and so on as part of the Smile Drive. There were 2 drop off centers – one in Saskatoon at the SDHA office, and one in Regina at a dental practice. Once all the donations were collected, they were delivered to organizations that serve our vulnerable populations. We would like to thank all that donated to the Smile Drive this year. Thanks to all who participated.

SHOW ORAL HEALTH KIT (BRIEFLY)
The Esther Wilkins Education Program provides dental hygiene professionals and students with engaging oral health lessons to use in their community outreach activities. Esther Wilkins Legacy League members are the driving force and support ongoing children's oral health promotion efforts of program volunteers.
These oral health kits are available for borrow through the SDHA or you can get your own – simply sign up for the Esther Wilkins Program and agree to do presentations in your community.
The kits include:
Magnetic tooth board with magnet pieces
Large toothbrush for toothbrushing demonstration
Toothbrushing and Handwashing songs
3 basic lessons and corresponding worksheets
Preventing Germ Transmission
Tooth friendly Snacks / Nutrition
Toothbrushing / Flossing Demonstration
You and your patients can join Canada’s Tooth Fairy Club which provides personalized letters and emails from the tooth fairy to children, activities and games.
Students can also get involved by joining STUDENTS UNITED, which allows not only oral health related students to promote the message of preventing oral disease, but also high school students too.
