2. A Team is any group of people organized to
work together or interdependently in order to
effectively meet the needs of their Customers
by accomplishing a purpose or goal.
A Team is a small group of people with
complementary skills who are committed to a
common purpose, performance goals and
approach for which they hold themselves

4. Team provides a framework that will increase
the ability of employees to participate in
planning, problem solving and decision making
Team Work represents a set of values that
encourages behaviors such as listening and
responding to others, providing support to those
in need, recognizing and encouraging the
achievements of others and promoting
performance of the individual as well as that of
the organization
5. Should be composed of people committed to the
Team’s mission effectively
Should have commitment to the Team and its
purpose
Should possess diversity of skills and personalities
complementing each other
Traits contributing to the success of a Team :
Honesty, Integrity ,Selflessness , Dependability,
Enthusiasm, Responsibility sharing ,
Cooperativeness, Initiative, Patience,
Resourcefulness, Punctuality, Tolerance /Sensitivity,
Perseverance
6. Forming: Setting ground rules for formation of the
Team
Storming: In this stage, there is a tendency of group
leaders to wrest control of the team which leads to
resistance from Team members
Norming : In this stage, the leader tries to take the
members to develop closer relationships
Performing: In this stage, all team members
cooperate with each other under the Team Leader
to achieve set goals
Adjourning: The Team is disbanded after they
achieve their goals and members go back to their
parent departments
8. The Team, composed of 5 to 10 members,
may have the following designated persons
for effective management of the Team
(1) Team Leader: He is the official contact
between the Team and rest of the
Organization . He is the official Record
Keeper and may be involved in implementing
Team Recommendation. He is a Coach for
the rest of the Team.
9. The Team Leader facilitates Team development
& continuous Improvement. He mentors Team
Members & promotes mutual respect for each
other. He promotes diversity within team
members, helps employee empowerment and
makes team development and team building
constant activities
(2) Team Recorder: He takes down minutes of
meetings and assists the Team Leader with
other types of correspondences generated by
the Team.
10. (3) Team Quality Advisor : He focuses on Team
Processes and Decisions, assists Team Leader
in breaking down tasks into component parts
and assigns them to Team Members. He helps
Team Leader prepare for meetings. He helps
team members learn scientific approach and
helps Team Members to convert their
recommendations to Presentations that can be
made before the Top Management
11. The Charter for the Team consists of Mission
Statement, Ground Rules and Team Goals
Mission Statement : It is simple, encompasses
all activities, progress of which can be
measured. An Example- “The purpose of the
Team is to reduce the time between when an
order is taken and when it is filled, while
simultaneously improving the quality of products
shipped.”
12. Ground Rules: These are agreed to by the
Team Members right at the beginning
indicating agreed upon actions by Team
Members
Team Goals: The ultimate results to be
achieved by the Team for which it was set
up.

Outstanding Quality
13. Assess : Look for strengths and weaknesses of Team
Members. Team Leader must give clear direction
understandable to all. All Team Players understand and
accept accountability measures
Plan : Based on need assessment. Activities should be
based on strengths and weaknesses of Team Members
done through needs assessment
Execute: Just in Time or Continuous Improvement
Evaluate : Effectiveness can be measured by analyzing
how weaknesses identified are strengthened. Needs
assessment can be re-administered.

Participation
• Team Members must act like a single entity
as they work on a problem
• Team should have some persons who will
implement the decision
• Team Members should have appropriate
balance mix of skills & traits
15. Team should ideally consist of 5-15 Members
Members should have knowledge & information
relevant to the problem & task
Team should select a leader with appropriate

Influence of a Member on decision should be on
his capacity to contribute and not on his
authority in the organization

The meetings of the Team appear formal or
stuffy
There may be great participation of team
members, but there is little accomplishment

22. Acknowledge that the conflict exists
Gain Common Ground
Seek to Understand all angles of the Conflict

23. For Team based Rewards, communicate
expected behavior and why they are
necessary to the Team Leader & Team
Members . Also indicate how they will be
recognized and rewarded
Decide what Performance is to be
