1. Unusual School Uniforms
Eton College
Eton College is a public school for boys, founded
in 1440 by Henry VI. It is located near Windsor,
England and houses approximately 1,300 boys
between the ages of 13 and 18. The school is famous
for the traditions it maintains, including a uniform of
a black tailcoat (or morning coat) and waistcoat,
false -collar and pinstriped trousers. All students
wear a white tie. Teachers are also required to wear a
form of uniform when teaching.
Christ's Hospital School
Christ's Hospital School was founded in 1552 when
the City of London cared for fatherless and poor
children. The citizens of London generously provided
new clothes which were in accord with Tudor style.
The early uniform consisted of an outer long blue
coat which has remained virtually unchanged for 450
years. Blue was a favoured colour for charity school
children because it was the cheapest available dye for
clothing.
Today, the outer blue coat and yellow socks are still
worn by the students because they have voted to
continue wearing the traditional school uniform.
