The interpersonal communication process involves an exchange of information between two or more people, however, there are several potential barriers that can negatively impact effective communication, such as emotional hijacking which allows emotions to override rational thinking, a lack of self-awareness of one's behaviors and their impacts, and poor self-management which is the ability to regulate one's behaviors and emotions. Active listening, where the listener focuses entirely on the speaker without internally planning a response, is important for successful communication but can be challenging to implement effectively.
