Be an Original is all about being yourself.when we suppress our originality, we lose touch with the source of our vitality and initiativeThe imperative to live life differently, on our terms, keeps building until it breaks through the surface. It is then up to us not to let it fade awayExample – Rosa Park (A Black women in 1955 refused to vacate seat for white’s in a bus, Altering American History forever)Thomas Edison who was rejected by his teachers, parents, fired in countless jobs, marched in the opposite direction of conventional thinking- and as a result played a major role in inventing the 20th centuryOne Good Mechanism Beats a Hundred Good Plans-Its through taking new actions that we learn to awaken and apply our hidden capacity. The brain’s tendency is to crave control and safety, it urges us to favor the familiar and routine, but this tendency spills over into every aspect of life and promotes reluctance to anything that involves change/risk or growth.Unless we choose to consciously override this brains tendency we will be consigned to repeating the past.Mechanism that can be used is What's the most exceptional thing you’ve done this week? What’s the most exceptional thing you will do next week?
Every human has 3 brains, only brain in head is what is trained but the fact is a average human processes information and can take decision using all the three brains, three brains are brain in gut, brain in heart and brain in the head, a good decision is a well coordinated decision taken by all the three brains in harmony.GUT: Every contact point with life creates a gut feeling; you may notice it as butterflies in your stomach- it is independent of brain, but interconnected to it. your gut feeling shapes whatever you doHEART: After every experience in digested by the gut, its hearts turn to ponder on it, brain in the heart works independently of brain in the headHEAD: brain in the head is the last place where signals reach to be processed, brain has RAS which has not evolved in centuries function of RAS is to magnify negative signals and ignore positive signals, this function was essential in stone age days when brain had to sense danger and act immediately, in present scenario humans should learn controlling magnifying property of RAS.Example- if your day went extremely well but some job was not done well, brain will magnify this negative signal and cause stress.
Competition leads to pressure, adding stress, its studied on athletes - level of negative stress hormones rose when athletes thought about competition. Performance improves when you take pressure off your shoulders.Beating others and performing well or succeeding are not identical.Superior performance requires absence of competition. To compete means to run in the same race, constantly comparing yourself to others, the goal is to get across the finish line first by “Any Fair” means. To excel means to reach beyond the best you have ever given, because doing so matters to you personally. To excel is to know your greatest strengths and passion, and emphasize on them while managing your weakness.Strategies to ExcelEvery time you get competitive, lighten up.Whenever you notice you are comparing yourself to others.Example: Lance Armstrong was very competitive he could never win Tour de France, after he survived rare cancer he changed his life view from being competitive and selfish to excellence and finally won tour de France which needs team work.
Be Quick without rushing – for example a person who does not know swimming will struggle in water to survive, instead of navigating through the problem chances are he will create more problems, on the other hand a trained swimmer will effortlessly without rushing quickly swim through.Difference between rushing and being quick is that of a non swimmer and swimmer swimming. We need to learn to calm down and stop rushing ways to achieve this isAt Every energy downturn stop rushing – everyday we have different level of energy at different times, if we know the pattern, we can better control stress by not rushing when low on energy- and instead spending low energy time taking breaks and doing work which require less energy utilization.Take Strategic pauses and essential breaks – strategic pause can be as small as a half a minute pause taken every 30 minutes.A pause or a break should have 7 elementsDeepen and relax your breathingChange your way and catch some lightRe-balance your postureSip Ice WaterEnjoy a moment of humorAdd some inspirationEat smartStart your day without a bangAwaken without a jarring alarm, Get atleast 5 mins of relaxed physical activity after waking up.
Launch that Rocket in your backyard – everyone is gifted with natural and enduring talents along with strong inner drive to turn them into strengths and apply them in pursuit of something that is meaningful. What is your natural style of approaching a task, what is your natural style of learning, what is your natural style of influencing others – understanding answers to theses questions help understand individuals natural patterns, next step is to develop this natural patterns in to distinctive strengths.A Nontalent is a behavior that is perpetually a struggle, I might have non talent at batting in cricket, best thing to do with non talent is to ignore it.But non talent can become a weakness if you find a role where success depends on it, for example if I become a cricket player, bad batting becomes my weakness, it is wise not to ignore weaknesses.
Any action taken is outcome of belief that the action will make a difference – if you think your vote in elections does not make a difference, chances are you wont vote. All actions are backed by belief that action is making a difference.Once you have decided that you can make a difference, its necessary to define your actions and make a promise.Doing what you promise is the next step.Owning up both successes and failures is the important aspect.
We must learn to devote most of our attention to present while always holding it in light of pasts lessons and the future’s possibilities.
Brain has tendency of focusing on negative and small things, we need to train our brains to bypass these tendencies.Other thing that we end up doing is focusing on individual tasks at microscopic levels and we get very detailed oriented and in bargain loose what is the big picture. Atleast once a day we should come out of the detail orientation/microscopic view and take telescopic view.Die Young as late as possible is about living life child like, children normally don’t have many filters and perceive things as they are and give simple solutions.
Last section of the book talks about Nerve and exceeding expectations. What will be our unique imprint in this world? What have we contributed, what are we here for? These are the questions we need to ask ourselves to raise the banner.Be aware of life, keep asking, close the distance between the work you do and the difference it makes in the world, keep calling upon the best in yourself
