How to write an essay/presentation Do not go over the word limit. This is set specifically to help you develop a sharp and concise style. Do not use value judgements of subjective terminology such as: primitive, backward, surprisingly advanced, superior or developed. You must be objective and indicate clearly what you mean by your terms. Writing an essay is a gradual process; the final version of an essay should have been developed over several drafts, prepared as you explore the topic and compile notes from reading material. You will usually need to do some reading before you can grasp the significance of the set topic. Begin with the suggested references in your book of reading and, as you read, keep a copy of the actual wording of the topic/question in view. Initial reading will enable you to: 1. University of Arkansas 1 #32) Rhetorical Analysis A rhetorical analysis assignment usually asks you to read two articles and write a paper that accomplishes three things: 1) identifies the ideas each author is trying to communicate; 2) analyzes the techniques each author uses to accomplish his or her purpose; and 3) compares and contrasts the authors’ approaches. The assignment is based on the premise that all writing is aimed at a specific audience for a specific purpose. This handout provides suggestions to assist you in the process. Topic Selection and Research Students are typically asked to select a topic and two articles that address that topic. Select a topic related to your area of study or that you find especially interesting and brainstorm related issues. Take care not to make your topic too broad, and then follow these steps: Search the library databases to find a good selection of articles on your topic. Don’t waste time! Ask for help if your searches yield no results. The research librarians provide valuable assistance. It will be to your advantage if the articles you select come from sources with distinctly different readerships (e.g., Forbes and The Nation; Audubon and The Washington Times). Ideally, the writers of both articles should make clear, assertive arguments. Research reports, clinical studies, or other informative writing will likely be less useful to you than more persuasive writing, as the authors of the former tend to utilize fewer obvious rhetorical devices. Avoid shorter articles, as they offer little for analysis. Determining Each Author’s Purpose Once you have selected your two articles, you are ready to begin your pre-writing activities. The following suggestions should help you begin. Audience analysis: For each article, examine the entire print or electronic publication. By scanning the other articles, editor’s page, graphics, and ads, you will be able to make an informed judgment regarding the demographics, values, and personal and political interests of the audience. Determining the overall aim of the publication should help you consider what the article itself may be intended to accomplish. Read with rhetorical awareness: First, read each article all the way through without making notes or annotations. Ask yourself about the writer’s intentions, and how the writer’s choices affect you as a reader. Often you can determine the rhetorical purpose of an author by gauging your intellectual and emotional reactions to the presentation. If you are angry or upset, for example, the author has achieved an effect through the use of particular rhetorical devices. Reflective analysis helps you to make an evidence-based argument about yourself, a skill that will benefit you not only here at Drexel, but also outside of Drexel. In your personal, academic, and professional life, it will be important to establish and reflect on goals, to periodically examine what you have accomplished, and to ask critical questions about your learning: What did I hope to accomplish in this class/project/ experience? How did I grow as a person, scholar, or professional? What evidence do I have for that growth? How does this growth prepare me for what is next? In many contexts, you will be asked to discuss, either in person or in writing, what kind of student or employee you will be. In these contexts, it is reflective analysis that will allow you to examine your experience for the evidence you need to construct clear and honest answers for yourself and others. Your Reflective Analysis should accomplish four tasks: 1. It should make an argument about your writing development. Read the FWP Outcomes and choose ONE of the Outcomes as the focus for your argument. You have lots of options here. 2. It should use pieces of your own writing as evidence for your argument. Specifically, you should integrate the following compositions as sources in your analysis: a. 1 major project from 101 b. 1 major project from 102 c. 2 informal compositions from either 101 or 102 d. Any other supporting compositions you would like to use 3. It should do “meta-analysis” of those artifacts as it makes its argument. “Meta-analysis” is your examination of your own work, your writing-about-your-writing. 4. It should be directed to a specific audience: Professional employer, friend, teacher, parent or guardian, future child, yourself…you choose. Citing Your Own Writing : In your Reflective Analysis, you should, of course, provide proper in-text citation of your sources, just as you would with any other source in a composition. In this case, however, your sources are your own compositions; so, you’ll be citing yourself. Here is an example: In my second project for English 101, I discuss the impact of drafting on my writing development: “I have always drafted because I have been required to. But I really wanted to reflect analytically on how the process of drafting actually impacted my overall writing development. Was I becoming a ‘better’ writer?” (“Drafting and Development” 1). You can choose from one of the flowing outcome: 1) Students will learn the terminology, rhetorical ideas, and practical approaches of writing persuasively/argumentatively . COM 510 Final Project One: Research Paper Guidelines and Rubric Overview The first summative assessment for this course is preparation of a six-page research paper that will demonstrate your media literacy skills. These skills are arguably more important in today’s new media environment than any previous point in history. As we navigate our complex new media environment, we all need the skills to make sense of the messages we receive, the ability to understand how messages are constructed, and be able to see how the meanings within messages can potentially influence content consumers. Development of the paper is supported by two milestones, which will be submitted in Modules Two and Three. This assessment will assess your mastery with respect to the following course outcome: Demonstrate advanced media literacy skills by researching, verifying, and effectively applying relevant, credible sources of information Prompt In this paper you will deconstruct a media message of your choosing. This means you will closely examine an audio-, video-, or text-based news story of your choice. Note: It must be accessible online by your instructor (For example, a Huffington Post or New York Times article or CNN.com video). Through this process, you will seek to understand who created the message, who is the intended receiver, how the content was created, what values or biases are present in the content, and what hidden meanings might be present. You will complete original research and find a minimum of three sources to support your interpretations and arguments discussed in the following critical elements. You can fulfill the research requirement for the paper in several ways. One option is to find scholarly resources that support a claim you make in the paper. For example, you might argue that the author is biased. You could then include research about bias in news reporting. Another option is to research different persuasive tools beyond those provided in your class readings and use those sources to fulfill your research requirement. Another option is to research more information on media literacy to include in your discussion. Whichever way you decided to incorporate research is up to you; however, you must use credible academic sources (click here for more information on identifying academic sources) and use proper APA formatting style. Refer to your APA Publication Manual for more information about these elements. Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed in the research paper: 1. Introduction: Provide an introduction to your paper, specifically: 1.1. Provide an overview of the story you selected and indicate what type of medium is used to tell the story (video, audio, words). Answer the question, “What is here?” 1.2. Include a link to the news article you selected and describe the source of the story.
