The Pilgrims were English separatists who fled to America on the Mayflower to escape religious persecution. They had a difficult first winter in Plymouth with many dying due to hardships. The native Wampanoag tribe, including Squanto, helped the Pilgrims survive by teaching them how to grow corn and catch fish and game. The following autumn, the Pilgrims and Wampanoag shared an early Thanksgiving feast to celebrate their successful harvest. Today, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November with family meals and reflections on the Pilgrims and Native Americans.

In the Autumn the harvest was very good, there was plenty of
food for everyone, and the Pilgrims invited the Wampanoag
people. They had a three-day feast. The Pilgrims wanted to
thank them for helping.
10. The first thanksgiving
The Pilgrims served freshly caught fowl such as swan, duck and
goose. Their tables were also filled with wild fruits and berries.
Vegetables such as corn, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, radishes,
turnips, onions and beets, made a colourful display.
The Wampanoag offered their Pilgrim friends fish, clams, lobsters,
oysters, five deer and several wild turkeys.
