The Effect Of Temperature On The Rate Of The Reaction
Purpose: The activation energy lab centralized on observing the effect that temperature has on the
rate of the reaction 6I (aq) + BrO3 (aq) + 6H+ (aq) 3I2 (aq) + Br (aq) + 3H2O while also using
calculations to determine the value of the rate constant and the activation energy at different
temperatures. The activation energy of a reaction is defined as the minimum amount of energy
required to make the transition from reactants to products. Given that the rate constant is
proportionally constant for an experiment, it changes with temperature. By keeping the
concentrations of the reactants constant, the effect of temperature on the rate was able to be
determined.
Temperature generally increases a reaction rate given that particles require require a specific
amount of energy to react. By increasing the temperature, more particles are able to collide with the
required force in perfect geometry to cause a reaction, which will result in an increased reaction
rate. An example of this includes milk turning sour much more rapidly in warmer conditions such
as room temperature versus the cooler temperature of the refrigerator.
Procedure Observations: First approximately 250mL of water was added to a 400mL beaker and
heated on a hot plate to 20 25C. As the water was heating, two test tubes were then prepared, test
tube A which contained 10mL of 0.0100 M KI, 10 mL of 0.0010 M Na2SO3, and 10 mL of
deionized water, while test tube B included 10mL of 0.0400 M KBrO3, 10 mL of

Barrio Rising Book Report
Barrio Rising is a book about urban popular politics and the making of modern Venezuela. It
portrays the democracy and violence in Venezuela between the 1950s and the Bolivarian Revolution
of 1998. People who lived during these times protested about the unfair treatment they received
from the government. They acted out in violence, guerilla warfares, and protesting. Their main
goal, in these communities, was to have their voices heard and their demands met to their standards.
In the 1950s, Marcos PГ©rez JimГ©nez, the president, modernized Venezuela by building dozens
of superblocks in the capital, Caracas. These buildings housed several thousands of poor people
without jobs, health care, utilities, etc. With the unfinished business of dictator Marcos Perez
Jimenez, who was overthrown on January 23, 1958, citizens rushed to occupy each ... Show more

Most people voted to show their political opinion in the 1960s, but there were people who were
making themselves visible by utilizing guerilla warfare to try to get their message, government
accountability, across. People have expectations of the government, and they are acting out by
voting or through violent actions. They wanted power of the people, a democracy. At the height of
the protests the interim government had moved to suspend rights of speech and of assembly, an
ironic first act following the democratic revolution s first elections (Page 97). Citizens began to
protest and hijack the government which led to brutal massacres. The people demanded water and a
clean environment, which involved the picking up of their trash on the streets. They wanted better
living conditions and job opportunities. Even though this city was built on farm land and not stable
for factories, they wanted available job

The US Constitution on Privacy Rights
I. Introduction
The U.S. constitution contains no expression of valued rights in considering privacy. Therefore, the
Supreme Court has adopted a rather narrow interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment
specifically in regards to the term liberty, as established in the due process clause . Earlier Supreme
Court decisions were not concerned with how states constituted their residents. Thus, any state, at
this time, was at the liberty to deprive its residents of their first amendment, freedom of speech,
religion, and press. However, this is much leniency and room for interpretation in the Due Process
Clause, because it may be stretched to constitute not only at federal level but the state level.
Reinterpretation under the 14th amendment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Basically, a state choosing to regulate health services, such as contraceptives, by prohibiting the
uses and deem them as crimes, if used, rather than focusing on the sales and manufacturing, is
clearly an unfavorable effect towards a marital relationship.
III. The Right to Abortion
The Griswold v. Connecticut is greatly remarkable and struck controversy in the hearts of many.
Thus, in relation to the Griswold v. Connecticut case is yet another controversial case decided
seven years later, Roe v. Wade(1973). This case serves as a landmark case involving the issue of
privacy under the due process clause, however consisted of moderately different facts compared to
the Griswold v. Connecticut case, in that a pregnant woman brought to Court, in the state of Texas,
the proscribing dispute to terminate a pregnancy, which under Texas law abortion subsisted as a
criminal statute. The rather surprising aspect of this case was the Courts ruled it as constitutional.
The Supreme Court ruled, in a 7 2 vote, that the rights of a woman to decide whether or not to
become a mother is a right to privacy, which is protected under the Fourteenth Amendment.
Individual freedom is crucial in this case in that a mother should have the decision to abort a
pregnancy. In the majority opinion, provided by Justice

An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge Summary
Piecing Together the Creation of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
Literature is often impacted by the experiences the author has had and the time period in which it
was written. The Civil War era affected works that were created during that time. The story An
Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce exhibits this influence as it is written with the
aid of the experiences he had during the war when he was enlisted. Although some claim certain
events in Bierce s life never affected him, others suggest that Bierce may have incorporated them
into his writings. The story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge was greatly influenced by Bierce s
experiences as a soldier, the extensive knowledge of the Civil War he gathered, and the time period
in which he lived through. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Northern American states were conflicted by Southern American states over the concept of
slavery. The North was industrialized, using machinery to rapidly produce products at a cheaper
price. Factories decreased the need for slavery, as machines could work at a more effective rate.
Thus the northern economy of America was generally based on manufacturing. In the Southern
states plantation farming was still in favor as opposed to large industrialized factories,
influencing the use of slavery. People were needed to work the fields so slavery still remained
very popular in the South, even as the concept of slavery was diminishing in the North. As the
United States was expanding, the North was pushing laws to make slave owning illegal, but the
South argued that such an act was unconstitutional ( Civil War Era ). This disagreement between
slavery was the spark of the Civil War. America split into two armies; the Union army from the
North, and the Confederate army from the South. Each side waged war with one another, to take

Frederick Douglas In His Discourse, What To The Slaves,
Frederick Douglas in his discourse, What to the Slaves, Is the Fourth of July , expressively sets
up the deceptions predominant in American culture amid the 1800 s. He was made a request to
give a discourse at an abolitionist servitude meeting amid a Fourth of July festivity, and he
accepted that open door to dishearten the foundation of subjection. He esteemed it double dealing
for the abolitionist subjugation constituents to request that he convey such a discourse.
Considering he was, a dark man and got away slave it appeared to Douglas a little oxymoronic to

might Douglas turn out to be so forceful? The minor certainty that they requested that Douglas give

Freedom In The Nineteenth-Century Essay
Throughout the nineteenth century, following the shift to an industrialized market, there was a
desire to form utopian communities in order to create model societies in the new world. The
overarching viewpoint was freedom and improvement of the self, however, the difference is that
the idea of freedom from the nineteenth century is much different than that of freedom today.
Reforms were based on the idea that true freedom was an internal phenomenon based on self
discipline and control. Freedom in the nineteenth century, was the moral groundwork that provided
the virtue of self possession and control. In addition, that idea behind most of these reforms was
religion which formed the concept that freedom was not having the choice to sin so that one could
be free of sin. This lead to perfectionism, or the belief that individuals and society were capable of
unlimited improvement. This caused reformers to improve their communities, spurring temperance,
education reform, and abolition. PARAGRAPH ABOUT TEMPERANCE: Along the lines of in

common schools were an attempt to give poor students the moral character and body of knowledge
to compete with upper class children. This attempt to liberate the lower class and perfect the social
order is an example of how an attempt to bring freedom can actually harm others considering that
many parents opposed common schools because they didn t want their children getting moral
instruction from the government. Also, in southern states many were afraid of education falling

growth and counteracting the increasing selling and administrative expenses Lowe s has set forth
some aggressive measures. Case in point, according to Lowe s website, the company has opened
130 stores in the 2003 fiscal year alone and has plans to open up 140 and 150 new stores in the
2004 and 2005 fiscal years, respectively (http://www.lowes.com).
According to a company profile produced by Datamonitor, Lowe s is second in the market to

Women in Pre-Eighteenth Century Literature Essay
Throughout history woman have been portrayed in novels, often with varying degrees of sexism
and/ or realism. From the representation of Mary Magdalene in The Bible, right through to J.K
Rowling s Hermione Granger, story tellers and subsequent authors have seen fit to include such
characters in their work.
Of course one must remember that a lot of such novels would have been written by male authors,
as was considered proper and that many female authors such as the Bronte sisters, who famously
wrote under the masculine pseudonyms of Action , Currer and Ellis Bell were not permitted to
write at all and had to do so under false names.

However, it must be noted further that the whole of the second paragraph makes great use of
imagery and descriptive language, going to great detail as to describe the lady s facial features and
indeed general appearance. Smollett also goes further though, as he describes her manor, and
attitude.
However, it must be noted that there is a distinct lack of insight into the lady s actual character,
showing perhaps a lack of knowledge in this area. Indeed, the next paragraph goes on to further
demean the female sex in general, as it portrays the other ladies as petty and frivolous caring only
of looks and reputation among the right type of society.
If the reader had know clue as to the age of this text, then they could easily ascertain that it is
somewhat ancient from the use of an archaic grammar practice, the use of a double vowel in the

Similarly if we look at passage B the use of archaic language is again prominent, as we see the
word gay being used in a context to mean happy and not in the slang form we see today. The use
of language overall in this passage is somewhat more adapt for creating the imagery of the scene
surrounding the action. In fact this passage includes no dialogue and is purely

Habeas Corpus Case Study
This paper will highlight the Habeas Corpus, the war on terror and how the Bush administration
detained prisoners at Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp (GITMO), a prison contained on a naval
base that was built on land leased from Cuba. These prisoners rights and civil liberties were
violated, and because they were detained in a facility beyond the jurisdiction of the U.S.
constitution, the Bush Administration has not been brought to justice. The Supreme Court should
have been required to protect the civil rights of the prisoners and the GITMO facility should have
been dismantled. The writ of habeas corpus has been referred to as the most celebrated writ in
English law (Chemerisky, 2001). The Suspension Clause of the U.S. Constitution (Article... Show

Military Commission Act refused to allow the courts or any judge to have any jurisdiction, to

prisoner held at GITMO would be given the right under the U.S. Constitution to demand release and
to appeal for habeas corpus before a U.S. district court. The Supreme Court also removed seven

Reflection On Present Day By Solnit
We as a society are Connected to death, to fear, to the unknown, but in being so connected one
could feel empathy, passion, and heroism as well (Solnit, 55) . Solnit is speaking of the tragedy
of the 9/11 attacks in 2001. A life altering event for our entire nation struck in a blink of an eye.
The same reaction spread with school shootings such as Columbine and Sandy Hook. We, as a
nation, bond over tragedy and failure in order to boost back morale, strength, and hope. Solnit, in
this section of reading, focuses on the act of togetherness, from 9/11 to the Zapatistas, to present
day. Time and time again our society is shown to thrive amongst our walls in the act of
togetherness, producing more hope, reason, and caring than any other time. This made me think,
why do we only become cohesive and accepting when we fail? Why do we only show love and

Growing up, the Golden Rule was: Treat others the way you want to be treated. This rule carried

respectful to others. We need to reach out together, set goals together, and boost our morale s
together. Single handedly, we cannot accomplish much. We rely on others opinions, previous
research, and ideas to guide us through life and create new ideas to further our society. Solnit
states the importance of learning from past history, and not repeating the same mistakes. We can t

Sports, whether team based or individualistic is a great activity for children that provide a variety
of benefits other than physical activity. Participation in sports can help build self esteem,

Anything can and will happen especially in combat, that s why the team member should make
sure that the team or squad leader know where the soldier and his or her equipment is at all

Army expects to know where its equipment is. No matter what someone is always responsible
for equipment in the Army. Accountability is important because it assures someone that needs

Without accountability you would not be able to put your trust in someone to complete a job

which frankly will not win you any games in the NFL.
While on offense, quarterback Andrew Luck is doing everything in his power to will the team to
victory with a lack of a running game. Then to make matters worse, Indianapolis lost wide receiver
Donte Moncrief for 4 6 weeks with a fractured scapula.
With all those factors, it is not looking good for Indianapolis. However, they have a favorable
matchup this week against the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers are coming off a big win against
the Jacksonville Jaguars but lost running back Danny Woodhead to a torn ACL. With no Woodhead
or Keenan Allen, the Colts defense should not have any trouble in slowly down a Chargers offense
that is averaging 32.5 points per game.
Indianapolis should get their first win this weekend, but if they don t, head coach Chuck Pagano

Courier over Postal Service
QUESTION
EXPLAIN THE ADVANTAGES OF COURIER SERVICES OVER PUBLIC POSTAL SERVICES
A courier service is an organization which offers special deliveries of packages, money, documents
or information. Courier services usually boast faster delivery times than any alternative method of
transporting documents, and many services in the modern world rely on them. The idea of couriers
and a courier service has been around almost as long as civilization, with rulers in antiquity using
couriers as a means to make new laws and edicts known throughout their lands. In the modern age of
international business, the courier service has become a keystone of enterprise, even as emerging

This is an excellent way for them to get their items delivered to their loved ones at home. Rather
than use slow mailing services, most tourists are now utilizing this type due to the reasons given
below. Basically, a courier is an agency that aids customers with their delivery packages, such as
money and documents, and provides a faster service. Those people who are always taking a tour
will be able to send postcards and even souvenirs back home no matter where they are. Tourists
also do not have to worry about payments since there are convenient ways to transfer money for
the service, such as automatic billing and online interfaces. More often than not, a courier
company also offers delivery guarantees, along with insurance on shipments and other perks,
making it an imperative part of every traveler s life. So, if you are a frequent holidaymaker, you
will enjoy great benefits from using this type of mailing service. You can be sure of secure
shipments and on time deliveries wherever you may be spending your vacation.
Easy and Convenient: What all you need to do in order to send a courier or parcel to any corner
of the world, is just to call a courier company. The company not only just picks up the parcel from
the desired location, but also makes arrangements for packing, loading and unloading. Unlike the
typical postal service, you don t need to visit any office to book your shipment. Further, you can

The Lack Of Responsibility Of The Teacher s Union
The argument of the consistency of our education system has been going on for few decades. We
all agree on the base that the school system has been broken. There have been solutions proposed,
such as George W. Bush reform act No Child Left Behind, but we hadn t seen a drastic change in
the system. The biggest question that is raised is that what changes, as flawed as the system looks,
should be implemented to the system to benefit and excel each and every student in our nation. Is
the problem from the lack of responsibility of the teacher s union as Waiting for Superman argued
or is there more to it? Though it might look convincing to criticize factors such as the national
teachers union for how deprived our educationsystem is,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In reality, charter schools only take away funding from the public schools whom already lack
funding.
Though Waiting for Superman outline the issue of why public schools failing as a minor
importance and simple to solve, the problem is immense and pleads for a change. Lack of funding
being the main issue, it is in a chain connection with overcrowded schools and thus leading to
students not getting the proper aid to surpass their grade level. Low funded school means that
teachers will get laid off, which will increase class size, increase the burden on the teacher, and
after school programs will be minimized. If the class is overcrowded a teacher wouldn t be able
to teach students according to curriculum. This means that teachers are only going to teach and not
be able to help other students because of the time and funding constraint. According to (U.S.
Department of Education, 2011) more than 40% of Low Income Schools don t get a fair share of
state and local funds. This is mostly seen in areas that are overpopulated. Based on the
Congressional Budget Office s projection made on 2012, funding would be cut by $1.1 billion,
cutting off funding to more than 4,000 schools serving an estimated 1.8 million disadvantaged
students. The jobs of more than 15,000 teachers and aides would be at risk. Students would lose
access to individual instruction, afterschool programs, and other interventions that help close

Analysis Of Harry Potter And Dumbledore
In this film critique, I will be analyzing the first half of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer s Stone.
The film starts out on Privet Drive in the dark of night emphasizing something dark but
important is about to happen. Dumbledore is standing under a street light and is using magic to
put the rest of the street lights out when he notices a cat, who quickly transforms into Professor
McGonagall. The darkness and low voices emphasize danger and suspense. The character who
plays Professor Dumbledore, Richard Harris, is a perfect because of his voice and composure,
he goes along perfectly with the book! His presence demands respect and his composure makes
him seem wise. The same goes for the Dursley family; Aunt Petunia, Fiona Shaw, is a sharp
/crinkle nosed, rude looking skinny woman, Uncle Vernon, Richard Griffiths, is fat and boastful
showing he s a horrible person, Dudley, Harry Melling, is a short, fat and pig like looking boy his
dad with the attitude combination of both parents, creating a monster of a child. Daniel Ratcliffe is
perfect for the part of Harry Potterbecause he s small, skinny, you would never suspect anything
abnormal by just looking at him.
Harry lives under the stairs at the Dursley with a lock on the outside of the cabinet and slot just
big enough for a dinner plate. This emphasizes the Dursleys feelings about Harry being there.
Harry receives his first letter from Hogwarts, the look on Uncle Vernons face shows deep concern,
almost like frightened.

Bystander Effect Theory Essay
The Bystander Effect Theory
Have you seen a group of children bullying or pushing around another child? Did you stand by and
watch the situation and not intervene? If so, even with such a minor situation, you fell into the
bystander effect theory. The bystander effect happens every day in our lives and dates all the way
back to the Holocaust and even further back in history.
The bystander effect theory is a psychological phenomenon were people do not help others in
emergency situations when there are others present, the bigger the crowd the less likely chance of
someone stepping in to help. In 1964, there was a woman who was brutally murdered and there
were approximately 30 witnesses who did not intervene to save her. This case was ... Show more

People are just trying to live life and survive and if the situation is too out of control where we
are talking about guns being involved, then that s where people would draw a line and not do
anything to help. People start to fear that their own life becomes in danger if they try to intervene
in something of that magnitude. I can completely understand why people would be more hesitant
when it comes to helping others when they fear their own life can be taken from them. This type
of fear is one of the main reason the Holocaust happened and people did very little to help the Jews.
During the Holocaust there were mass killings involving huge crowds and a very massive witness
group. The Germans were brain washed to think the Jews were horrible people and they blamed
them for taking away their dignity as a country. There are reports of dozen of witness that stood
by and did nothing to help. A photographer took pictures of a man, a Luthuanian, beating 30 40
men to death with a crow bar then watched as they sang their national anthem on top of the dead
bodies. With a crowd so enormous and so many people with hate in their hearts it would be so
hard for someone to intervene in that type of situation. Another example from the reading is a
medical man was about to offer a bandage to a Jewish lady but one of the guards approached them
and threatened the medical s man life. The guard instilled fear in this man and he went back and told

Importance Of Extinction Of Plants And Animals
The extinction of plants and animals is a major issue that cannot be ignored by society. Although
extinction and decline in population is a natural occurrence, the rate of population decline and
extinction has been highly escalated because of human acts such as deforestation and overhunting.
Researchers and scientists have tried to combat these issues and prevent extinctionthrough captive
breeding programs and conservation education, but are criticised for housing animals in zoos or
even theme parks. These obstacles have made it more difficult to effectively protect endangered
animals and educate about the importance of conservation. Dedicated researchers and zoologists
also struggle when studying the behavior and ecology of these animals because of this criticism.
Zoos have not always been classified as public institutes geared to entertain and educate in a family
friendly way. The common zoothat society is familiarized with today first stemmed from the exotic
animal collection of royal families which eventually led to both human entertainment through
circuses and education through modern day animal research programs. Obviously both are very
different, but animal research in captivity, such as zoos, is still criticized. Many present day zoos
are still condemned for animal mistreatment similar to that of circuses, but both have completely
dissimilar goals. Today s zoos are held to strict animal standards and are also highly regarded for
the work they do to conserve

The History Of Cosmetic Dentistry Gives Insight Into The
The history of cosmetic dentistry gives insight into the current social standing of cosmetic dentistry.
In Braces, Pointless and Essential, Michael Thomsen, the author, presents the history of dentistry
(and as a result, the history of cosmetic dentistry). A man named Pierre Fauchard is introduced as an
18th century French physician credited as being the father of modern dentistrybecause of his
formalization of the basic principles of contemporary braces (anchoring dentures to molars to keep
them in place). Thomsen writes that Around the same time that Fauchard practiced, the desire for a
symmetrical set of teeth was taking root among the wealthy in Europe and the US. (3) An American

Dr. Mulcahy s reasoning is opposed in an article later published by the Canadian Dental
Association titled Cosmetic Dentistry Is Still Dentistry authored by Dr. Ken Glick, DDS. Dr. Glick
s main motivating factor for writing this article is to refute most of Dr. Mulcahy s points. These
dueling dentists present the juxtaposing sides of this argument involving the question of whether
cosmetic dentistry should be considered a specialty and some ethics and morality values in the
modern dental field. A point of agreement between the dueling articles is that an integral aspect of
restorative dentistry is the concept of an ideal appearance. Dr. Mulcahy states that restorative
dentistry is dedicated to perfection and that the best outcome of our endeavors includes the esthetic,
or cosmetic, aspect of what we do. (1) Though this assertion precedes a statement against the
disproportionate emphasis on the cosmetic aspect of restorative dentistry, which Dr. Brink

restorative dentistry has been the ability to produce ideal appearance in the restored teeth. (2) This

Stereotypes In Hollywood Stereotypes
A deep look into some Latino performances shows the heroes who have withstood and
undermined the stereotyping system however much they were involved in the Hollywood films
where stereotyping is accustomed. Actors have less to contribute to the authorship as they are
hired and are supposed to act wherever scene they are assigned to serve. Latino actors may not
necessarily be considered Latino enough to take part in a scene; this has become a casting practice.
Worse still we have actors from specific ethnic groups who cannot stand up and depart from
stereotypes. Actors original performance is not appreciated in a way that during production the actor
follows every instruction from makeup artists to the director. Lack of appreciation frustrates the
contribution of the filmartist. Performance should include body movement, gestures, facial
expression and voice which should not make the character disappear into actor or actor going into
the character. The only way Latino actors will feature to be less stereotypical is by embracing the
true artist performance. A case to show countering Hollywood stereotypeis evident through
characters like Lupe Velez s energetic in an uncontrolled way performance, Jose Ferrer s sweet and
soothing voice, and Gilbert Roland s attention capturing costume and upright posture. We have
some actors who have defied the pre assumed concept of stereotype and have tried their best in
countering stereotyping. Lupe Velez who was brought to limelight

Differences Between Minority And Minority Groups
Abstract
This study explores the relationships between majority and minority groups and their awareness of
blatant and subtle prejudice, by priming either common or dual identity. It was hypothesized that
due to their marginalization, minority groups will be more aware of both subtle and blatant
prejudice and that those primed with dual identity will show a similar heightened awareness. The
results demonstrated that majority groups were more aware of both types of prejudice,
contradicting many previous results in this area. This study was conducted on an Australian
population, making it unique, and possibly explaining the contrary results. However, it has also
been suggested that the social stigma surrounding racism in our society has increased the awareness
by majority groups, as they strive to be politically correct and avoid judgment by their peers.
Another worthy discussion point is the internalization of prejudice by minority groups living in a
majority dominated society.
How Common and Dual Identity Can Influence Majority and Minority Awareness of Subtle and
Blatant Prejudice
In modern society, prejudiced ideas and values are present amongst majority dominated societies
(Banaji Devos, 2005). Minority groups, and individuals with a heightened sense of cultural
affiliation to their ethnicity, have been shown to be more aware of subtle prejudice than majority
groups (Operario Fiske, 2001). Previous research in the area of racial prejudice has also

they do not have to have cash on them at the moment of the ride.

is difficult.
Overall, the body language and demeanour of the drivers is not as polite as that of others in the

Essay on Leonardo Da Vinci
Leonardo Da Vinci
Most people probably think of Leonardo Da Vinci as just a painter but in reality he was actually
also a expert drawer, an ingenious inventor, and a marvelous scientist. Over a period of twenty
five years Leonard dissected around thirty human bodies as well as cows, birds, frogs, bears, and
monkeys. Of these bodies he made over two hundred tedious drawings. Another thing to remember
is beings the process of drawing took so long the bodies would start decomposing before he was
finished with all of the drawings in which he intended to make. Leonardo Da Vinci was born on

As most people know Leonardo was a magnificent artist however some people don t realize being
an artist doesn t always mean you re good at painting and drawing. Leonardo was originally
brought to the Moor who ruled the duchy of Milan by music not art. The Moor became
Leonardo s patron after Leonardo painted an altarpiece for the Church of San Francesco

stepped up to take on the task. Leonardo planned to make the horse first then make the rider
separately and add it on later. He studied horses drawing the best the Moor had in his stable he
also measured them even dissecting horses to make sure he had the plans just right. In 1493
Leonardo displayed his clay model that was full size. He still had to cast the enormous statue,
which could prove to be the hardest part of making the sculpture. He invented a new way to get
all the molten bronze into the mold quickly so it didn t crack when it cooled. When all the
bronze required to make the statue (more than seventy tons) was gathered and the molds made

Who Is Sister Carrie Rebel
Although Dreiser makes several generalizations about women at the beginning of the novel,
which might lead the author to be seen as conservative, his empathy for Carrie s position seems
to represent his view on contemporary women. Thus, Sister Carrie is initially described as
having an average little conscience , and being urged into the position of the traditional women
(Dreiser 92). However, despite the fact that she wants to be a consumerist, Carrie can certainly be
considered to be a rebel. When the Hansons tried to transform her personality, her heart revolted as
much as when Hurstwood attemped to narrow her desires (324). Coming to New York with her
alleged husband, she, thus, started to have a few opinions of her own (Dreiser 280).... Show more

Carrie as a character depicts this transformation. At first, she is a model of True Woman
, then she
becomes a modern New Woman. She does not want to follow the ideal women were supposed to
follow and, thus, she rebels not only against her husband Hurstwood, but also against society and
the common social and economic discrimination. When Carrie decides to seek a job again, the
story turns and she changes places with Hurstwood, who is now unemployed. This is described as
the beginning of the new order (Dreiser 377) and is the main decisive turning point in the novel.
Carrie starts earning money, covering all of her and Hurstwood s living cost, while he does the
grocery shopping. We can see that Carrie does not understand his unemployment, claiming that [n]o
man could go seven months without finding something if he tried (Dreiser 380). Thus, the novel as
a whole demonstrates how this social and economic rise of the New Women is not only connected
but congruent to a certain decline of the male gender, designated as a crisis of masculinity by
historians (Brod, Harry. The Case for Men s Studies. The Making of Masculinities: The New Men
s Studies. Ed. Harry Brod. Boston: Allen Unwin, 1987, pp. 39 62.). For someone like George
Hurstwood, who is a married manager of Fitzgerald and Moy s, the loss of his ability to maintain
his status seems to represent this crisis accurately. Within this shift, a major change in gender
relation follows. Carrie and Hurstwood move into different social and economic directions, drawing
attention to the restructure of Victorian assumptions regarding male and female understanding.
Dreiser metaphorically remarks this: with the tables turned, she was looking down, rather than up,
to her lover (184). As aforementioned, with Hurstwoods s downfall, Dreiser might want to point
out how even rich and successful people happen to lose all what they have.

sense since retail is one of the largest industries in the world. Retail accounts for 1 in 4 jobs in
the United States and contributes over 2.6 Trillion to the annual GDP. The NRF has several
different things it does, like many other special interest groups. It mainly serves as a voice for the
retail industry. With over 10 different interests residing in fields from Chain Restaurants, Finance
and Global Issues, to Legal, Small Business, and Technology. They are a voice for every type of
retail, and anything that is directly affected by retail. Since their... Show more content on

Patrick s Day, Super Bowl, Tax Returns, Valentine s Day, and the Holiday Season.). One of the
biggest reasons they do this is to provide a tangible service for their due paying members. While
members do see value in the NRF s lobbying, it is very hard to measure and really see results from
most of the time. Like many other interest groups, this is the NRF s way of staying afloat and
paying those who lobby. That is why due paying members are crucial to the NRF, this is their
main source of income. Along with that, the NRF is also funded by large conferences and events.
The conferences they host are some of the largest n retail with over 40,000 attendees. Another
reason the NRF puts out these reports and hosts events is to gain recognition and create a
reputable strong name. In today s world if a business does not have a name for themselves, they
can not succeed. The NRF recognizes how crucial this is. If they want to properly lobby and
advocate for retail, they must have some authority when going to government officials.
This leads us to the lobbying side of the NRF. The group lobbys for retail, and everything that
affects it. The NRF breaks down into different specific areas to lobby for. With over 60
departments/ committees, they cover a broad range of things. Some of the very specific groups
lobby for: protection against patent trolls, consumer credit issues, postal issues, supply chain, and
support for the Americans with Disability Act. The NRF has a

The Slopes Of War Essay
The Slopes of War written by N.A. Perez follows a realistic fictitious story about the Battle of
Gettysburg during the Civil War, which is also told by the characters told in different perspectives,
the Union and the Confederates. The story utilizes many historical facts regarding the battle, even
including dialogues from Union and Confederate generals. It also tells us the audience the
emotional and physical effects of war, and how the characters are affected by the end of the battle.
Although the novel does portray many themes, imagery, and is told in different perspectives to
convey the story, let s take a look into the physical and emotional effects of the battle, and how
those effects make the story. Out of the three physical... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We already know the battle has an effect on the history of Gettysburg, but how about the
ordinary citizens? One character from the Union side is Rebekah, who states in page 140, But it
s a bigger issue than how one man treats his slaves, isn t it? What about his right even to to own
another human being? If the North wins the that will be settled for once and for all. Since one
of the biggest reasons of the Civil War happening was slavery, this created a schism in ordinary
citizens across the North and South. This also divided citizens to supporting slavery and
advocating to abolish the immoral practice of enslavement. Rebekah can be clearly be seen as
emotionally affected by the war as her two cousins are fighting for the Confederacy, while her
other relatives are fighting to abolish it, for the Union. One other excerpt from the story that
also shows the effect of the battle on the townspeople is from page 144, Tell me. What s
happened? Jennie. Jennie Wade? What about her? His lips moved stiffly. Shot. In the back. She
was baking, and a minie ball came through two doors and killed her. The excerpt clearly shows
how ordinary civilians like Rebekah and her family and Jennie Wade can be affected by war, since
Jennie Wade was shot by either by troops of the Union or Confederacy, and also how innocent

The Impact Of Internet On The Level Of Competition
The ways in which the internet will affect the level of competition in this industry and for this case
include the following;
Cost Reduction
In the previous years, the film industry in Japan used to make use of many employees in the
production process. That means that the company spends a lot of money in paying for labor. With
the availability of the internet, there are animated pictures that are found on the internet and can be
used for the film production industry. That means that the number of employees who are used in
production will be reduced. The company will also be able to work in a fast way. That means that
the wages that were paid to the drawer over the three months of production will be drastically
reduced (Gardner, and Howard, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Availability of High Skilled Staff
With the availability of the internet, the companies in the film production industry will be able to
advertise for job vacancies via the internet. Internet adverts usually go wide and broad. That
means that the companies will have a wide variety of staff to select. That means they will get the
best skills from all over the world. Availability of skilled labor will lead to more innovations in the
company, and that will result in company efficiency. Availability of efficient staff usually leads to
increased efficiency that cuts on the costs of the company (Bartlett, Ghoshal, 140).
From the above advantages of the use of the internet, then to is evident that it will be the next big
thing that brings about competition. Companies should invest in technology so that they can
benefit from the advantages that accrue from the use of technology. With a rapidly growing
technological environment, it is advisable for companies to invest more in technology and that will
be their biggest source of competitive advantage (Due, 56).
Strategies That Can Be Adopted
Every organization should have laid down strategies that will help in the achievement of the goals
of a company. The first thing for a company is to set up its goals. The goals will help in
determining the strategy that will be used in a company. A company

Wal-Mart, the Big Bad Wolf of the Economy
Wal Mart is one of the largest corporations in America today. It serves to millions of consumers a
day and is known for its motto lower prices everyday. For the last few years however, there has
been the controversy of whether Wal Mart is truly good for the American economy or not. On
one hand people believe Wal Mart is good for the economy because it saves the average
consumer money due to the low priced products. Along with being an easy one stop shop where
everything a person could possibly need is found there. Aside from the low prices and
convenience, Wal Mart is bad for the American economy. In early December of 2005 a poll was
commissioned by Wakeup Wal Mart, a union funded group that has been pressuring Wal Mart to
raise employee... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Health Insurance has been another controversy in the debates of Wal Mart. Wal Mart employees,
especially full time employees should get health care. The opposition to this is that aside from
Starbucks no large employer gives health insurance to part time employees due to high costs of
health care (Is Walmart Bad For The Economy). However compared with other large companies
Wal Mart covers only 43% of employees with health insurance as oppose to the average 66% that
other large companies cover. If Wal Mart were to reach the average coverage rate, they would be
covering an additional 320,000 employees. Wal Mart employees are paid poorly if at all for their
work and are rarely covered with health insurance. The Wal Mart corporation states that 90% of
it s workers have health insurance. In actuality, the 90% who are covered, around 50% of those
are insured because of their spouses employer, who, by the way, may be a union employer. Wal
Mart is an anti union corporation. The first ever unionized Wal Mart was in Quebec, Canada. It
was quickly shut down once is became unionized however, and this is not the only case like this.
Many attempts have been made to change Wal Mart into a union employer, but all attempts have
failed. Wal Mart is often portrayed as the big bad wolf of companies. It s accused of harming
smaller mom and pop businesses. But it is in fact worse then that.

Building the Emotional Intelligence of Groups

HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW
By now, most executives have accepted that emotional intelligence is as critical as IQ to an
individual s effectiveness. But much of the important work in organizations is done in teams. New
research uncovers what emotional intelligence at the group level looks like and how to achieve it

In this article, we ll explore how emotional incompetence at any of these levels can cause
dysfunction. We ll also show how establishing specific group norms that create awareness and
regulation of emotion at these three levels can lead to better outcomes. First, we ll focus on the
individual level how emotionally intelligent groups work with their individual members emotions.
Next, we ll focus on the group level. Andfinally,we ll look at the cross boimdary level.
Working with Individuals Emotions
/(// Kasper, head ofher company s customer service department, is naturally tapped tojoin a new
cross functional team focused on enhancing the customer experience: she has extensive
experience in and a real passion for customer service. But her teammatesfind she brings little more
than a bad attitude to the table. At an early brainstorming session, Jill sits silent, arms crossed,
rolling her eyes. Whenever the team starts to get energized about an idea, she launches into a
detailed account of how a similar idea went nowhere in the past. The group is confused: this is the
customer service star they ve been hearing about? Little do they realize shefeels insulted by the
very formation of the team. To her, it implies she hasn t done her job well enough.

River Stinchar Research Paper
The River Stinchar and its tributaries, the ferly burn and the Dalquairne burn show patterns
which follow the Bradshaw Model to a large extent. The typical upper course of a river is narrow
in width, shallow in depth and slow in velocity. The load size is very large and therefore, less of
it. The bank gradients are steep and the discharge levels are low. All these features gradually
change as the river flows downstream. This is shown in figure 2 The location chosen for study
is The River Stinchar and its tributaries which are located in South Ayrshire and flow south west
from the Galloway Forest Park and were chosen due to a previous visit to the area. The location
can be seen in figure 1. There is a single lane farm track that is actually a National Cycle Route
that runs level with the burns and also with the Stinchar itself which allows for easy access. This
location was chosen because the waters manage to cover the upper, middle and lower course in a
small distance making it more efficient to study. This area is very isolated and the nearest
settlement is the village of Crosshill which is 8 miles away. There were very few signs of life
with only three or four houses, all of them being hill sheep farms which meant that we did not
disturb anyone while doing our study.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Art Is The Visual Manifestation And Application Of Human...
Art is the visual manifestation and application of human creativity, typically executed through
painting or sculpture. Art is multifunctional, in that it has the ability to transcend the visual by
evoking an emotional response in a non verbal way. In art, artists are able to utilize their medium
to connect their personal message to the audience in a non traditional manner. Disarming the
audience by presenting a new perspective on critical issues through the implementation of art and
can help combat problems concerning identity politics and stereotypes. Artists have the aptitude to
inspire change in their world by shattering conventional thinking on canvas. The biography and
artworks of artist Jean LaMarr demonstrates this very notion. By analyzing artworks such as
LaMarr s Dolly Digle s Friend, one can see how the message of her artwork goes beyond the
expectations of the canvas, surpass the visual experience and challenge the audience to confront
stereotypes as she reclaims her Native American identity. Jean LaMarr was born on the Susanville
Indian Rancheria in California. The Pit River and Paiute artist works primarily now as a
printmaker, however still paints, and still participated in creating video productions as well as
installations. The now nationwide known community arts activist has revolutionized her practices
by taking her gift outside the studio and into the world by working with local Native youth in the
creation of community murals. Jean LaMarr is not

The Function Of Insulin Or Rapid-Acting Insulin Analogs
insulin or rapid acting insulin analogs Preparations included with phenolic excipients serves two
purposes: retaining solution sterility and stabilization of the insulin molecule in the hexameric
form to avoid aggregation(35). These compounds are may cause problems since they are proved to
be toxic and irritant, and are being investigated for their role as sensitizers and carcinogens (36).
Generally the human insulin monomers may assemble into insulin dimer and insulin hexamer
which is more stable than that of dimeric form. Regarding the main function of insulin which is
regulating the uptake of glucose, both insulin dimer and hexamer are inactive in biological
environment. However they are much more stable from conformational viewpoint ... Show more

When phenolic preservatives were depleted insulin glulisine dissociated or broke down from a
structure with higher molecular weight (hexamer) structures into a number of intermediate
molecular weight one, usually between monomer and hexamer, whereas insulin aspart and insulin
lispro separated into monomers and dimmers. The ultimate disintegration of Insulin lispro and
aspart was due to the large extent of their dissociation when they were depleted of their excipients
while insulin glulisine was dissociated to intermediate molecular weight molecules in the absence
of the phenol and m cresol (39).
In general they concluded that insulin degradation was inversely related to the concentration of
phenol and m cresol as phenolic preservatives.
Tissue response and inflammation (cytotoxic effect of insulin with and without excipients)
CD54, CD11b and CD14 are surface proteins considered as markers of inflammatory cell
activation. Weber et al explored these markers to investigate whether the phenol and m cresol could
cause the inflammatory response. In order to study the potential inflammatory effect of phenolic
preservatives of insulin they selected monocytic cell line THP 1. The mentioned cell lines were
exposed to sub toxic concentration of phenol and m cresol as well as insulin analogues formulation
for 24 hours. Since they found that insulin with

Professional Athletes Are Not Above The Law
Often times, professional athletes are role models and revered heavily by the media, franchise,
and the organization that the athlete performs for. However, to see a pro athlete fall and suffer
due to accusations and evidence brought against them is a very serious issue. There have been
so many past court cases where professional athletes have had to pay for their actions against
their organization or against society. Athletes are not above the law, but they are generally
portrayed to be seen above the law because of their financial success. Based on past court cases,
professional athletes are not above the law because they are simply still people that make
mistakes. Also, athletes are not the exception to the law. They have to follow the rules of society
just like everyone else. Finally, professional athletes are not above the law because they have a
reputation to up hold. They are sometimes being watched by millions of people on national
television. Professional athletes are still people that have made mistakes in the past. There is no
professional athlete that does not wish that he or she did not make the mistake that was made. A
great example would be NFL Running Back Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings. The article
discusses how Peterson had punished his 4 year old son with a switch bare bottom. Peterson had
admitted that he had beaten his son enough for him to draw blood. The court had declared this as
child abuse against Peterson. Although, Peterson had defended

Chemical Evaluation Of Zinc Effects At 5 Ht1ar And...
Our present study represents a further pharmacological evaluation of zinc effects at 5 HT1AR
and serotonin neurotransmission in the context of zinc antidepressant like activity. Since the
role of postsynaptic 5 HT1AR in the pathophysiology of depression and in the action of
antidepressants is widely discussed in the literature (see [9] for review), our present study
evaluated the effect of zinc at postsynaptic 5 HT1AR in the PFC and Hp of rats after acute and
chronic zinc treatments. Neither acute nor chronic zinc treatment induced significant changes
in 5 HT1AR mRNA in the PFC or Hp (Fig. 1a, c). However, chronic zinc treatment increased
protein levels of 5 HT1AR in the Hp by 78% (t=3.137, df=14, p=0.007) relative to control rats (Fig.
1d). Discrepancies between 5 HT1AR mRNA and protein expression levels in different brain
regions have been reported in animal stress models. Iyo et al., 2009 observed increased 5 HT1AR
mRNA level and decreased protein level in the PFC [6]. Our earlier animal studies showed no
changes in 5 HT1AR mRNA in the PFC of female rats subjected to prenatal stress, in pregnant
stressed female or in the Hp of male rats subjected to chronic mild stress [15]. However, 5
HT1AR protein levels were reduced in these groups of rats [15]. Shishkina et al., 2012 [12]
reported an increase in 5 HT1AR gene expression in the PFC of rats exposed to FST; this effect
was reversed by chronic fluoxetine treatment [12]. However, in the non stressed rats, fluoxetine

Consider The Lobsters By David Foster Wallace Summary
Animals as well as humans have been around for an extended period of time showing that there
obviously has been some sort of interactions between them throughout the years which may not
have always been all the bad. They have been here for hundreds of thousands of years. They are
our main source of comfort, happiness, joy, fun, and of course: food. Without animals we would
not be at the point in life where we are today. Our next best source of food besides animals would
have to be plants and who wants to eat plants all the time for every meal and only that? The
treatment of those animals that we use as a food source and even the ones as pets is not always
positive. Lobsters, a primary food source for the wealthy, are treated very poorly, for... Show more

In the essay Ethics and the New Genetics by The Dalai Lama the most information about
cloning is found. Within his first couple pages he makes sure that he gets he view on the idea
known. In principle, I have no objection to cloning as such as a technological instrument for
medical and therapeutic purposes (The Dalai Lama, 135). Although there are many people who
would agree with the Dalai Lama on the idea that cloning should only be used for medical
purposes there are many people who would also disagree with him on this and think that it is okay
to clone at any point in time for any reason, simply because they can and they want to. I once saw a
BBC documentary which simulated such creatures through computer animation, with some
distinctively recognizable human features. I was horrified (The Dalai Lama 135). The first
successful attempt at cloning was Dolly the sheep. Animals were used as test subjects for cloning
because who in their right mind would practice something that could end badly on something or
someone that actually does something useful in this world. No one is going to start out testing on a
human because that is just pictured as being wrong. So why is it fair to test something, that we
have no idea how it will react, on a helpless animal. The animal cannot prevent the testing from
happening simply because it is an animal and it does not have the strength and power that

The Impact Of Nonconformity On Society
Rather than Love, than Money, than Fame, give me truth (Henry David Thoreau Walden) ,
Nonconformity is a when you fail or have a refusal with what Society has or wants, for a long
time people always tried to always do things always in other ways. It never worked until America
started blooming, even after America started booming many nonconformist were too come
because in this world No one can not be the same, we all want different ways to live. The world
clearly can t be the same at all. Many humans have proved this from Thoreau to Dickinson,
NonConformity has had an impact in society. People become adjacent from social norms due to
the fact the normal doesn t fit them, Many transcendentalist of the Reconstruction Era in
American spoke their wise minds, To Be misunderstood is great (Ralph Waldo Emmerson, Self
Reliance) which is more rather a true fact, Nonconformity can bring a big boom in culture and in
change of a style of the people. which brings me to one of the best modern day transcendentalist
from the last century. Around the late 1980 s music only had one sound, It was either pop or soft
rock. A man with a booming sound out of Seattle , Washington soon prevailed and changed the
music genre with the sound of Grunge, Kurt Cobain with him long hair and sound took the word

Analysis Of The Movie The Graduate Essay
Edward Brambila
English 2 Prof. Sosner
12/16/2016
The Art of Symbolism in The Graduate The movie The Graduate is a struggle story of a fine
caliber that falls under the genre of comedic drama. Some might even argue that it was one of
the best films of its time and even till this day. The way the movie blends characters is anything
but superficial and its use of symbolism to describe said characters leaves little more to be
desired. While some may not like the movie and say it falls short the movie has proper use of
symbolism through the use of multiple props, it also uses symbolic statements as a way to
strengthen Dustin Hoffman s character s archetype and clue in on specific details which in turn
shows us the relationships between him and other characters. Of the many symbolic details the
first two we encounter at the very beginning of the film are cluing us in on the character of
Dustin Hoffman who is known as Benjamin Braddock. The two details happen almost
simultaneously, one being the song The Sound of Silence by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel and
the other is the symbolic action of him sliding across the screen on an airport conveyor belt. The
first detail, the song, suggests that the character Benjamin or Ben is lost in the world. He has no
idea where to go from this point in his life forward. He is lost in the darkness of life and is
directionless. The second detail is the conveyor belt which forcibly moving him along. This
conveys the fact that throughout

  • 2. The Effect Of Temperature On The Rate Of The Reaction Purpose: The activation energy lab centralized on observing the effect that temperature has on the rate of the reaction 6I (aq) + BrO3 (aq) + 6H+ (aq) 3I2 (aq) + Br (aq) + 3H2O while also using calculations to determine the value of the rate constant and the activation energy at different temperatures. The activation energy of a reaction is defined as the minimum amount of energy required to make the transition from reactants to products. Given that the rate constant is proportionally constant for an experiment, it changes with temperature. By keeping the concentrations of the reactants constant, the effect of temperature on the rate was able to be determined. Temperature generally increases a reaction rate given that particles require require a specific amount of energy to react. By increasing the temperature, more particles are able to collide with the required force in perfect geometry to cause a reaction, which will result in an increased reaction rate. An example of this includes milk turning sour much more rapidly in warmer conditions such as room temperature versus the cooler temperature of the refrigerator. Procedure Observations: First approximately 250mL of water was added to a 400mL beaker and heated on a hot plate to 20 25C. As the water was heating, two test tubes were then prepared, test tube A which contained 10mL of 0.0100 M KI, 10 mL of 0.0010 M Na2SO3, and 10 mL of deionized water, while test tube B included 10mL of 0.0400 M KBrO3, 10 mL of ... • 3. Barrio Rising Book Report Barrio Rising is a book about urban popular politics and the making of modern Venezuela. It portrays the democracy and violence in Venezuela between the 1950s and the Bolivarian Revolution of 1998. People who lived during these times protested about the unfair treatment they received from the government. They acted out in violence, guerilla warfares, and protesting. Their main goal, in these communities, was to have their voices heard and their demands met to their standards. In the 1950s, Marcos PГ©rez JimГ©nez, the president, modernized Venezuela by building dozens of superblocks in the capital, Caracas. These buildings housed several thousands of poor people without jobs, health care, utilities, etc. With the unfinished business of dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez, who was overthrown on January 23, 1958, citizens rushed to occupy each ... At the height of the protests the interim government had moved to suspend rights of speech and of assembly, an ironic first act following the democratic revolution s first elections (Page 97). Citizens began to protest and hijack the government which led to brutal massacres. The people demanded water and a clean environment, which involved the picking up of their trash on the streets. • 5. The US Constitution on Privacy Rights I. Introduction The U.S. constitution contains no expression of valued rights in considering privacy. Therefore, the Supreme Court has adopted a rather narrow interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment specifically in regards to the term liberty, as established in the due process clause . Earlier Supreme Court decisions were not concerned with how states constituted their residents. Thus, any state, at this time, was at the liberty to deprive its residents of their first amendment, freedom of speech, religion, and press. However, this is much leniency and room for interpretation in the Due Process Clause, because it may be stretched to constitute not only at federal level but the state level. Connecticut case, in that a pregnant woman brought to Court, in the state of Texas, the proscribing dispute to terminate a pregnancy, which under Texas law abortion subsisted as a criminal statute. The rather surprising aspect of this case was the Courts ruled it as constitutional. The Supreme Court ruled, in a 7 2 vote, that the rights of a woman to decide whether or not to become a mother is a right to privacy, which is protected under the Fourteenth Amendment. Individual freedom is crucial in this case in that a mother should have the decision to abort a pregnancy. In the majority opinion, provided by Justice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Freedom In The Nineteenth-Century Essay Throughout the nineteenth century, following the shift to an industrialized market, there was a desire to form utopian communities in order to create model societies in the new world. The overarching viewpoint was freedom and improvement of the self, however, the difference is that the idea of freedom from the nineteenth century is much different than that of freedom today. Reforms were based on the idea that true freedom was an internal phenomenon based on self discipline and control. Freedom in the nineteenth century, was the moral groundwork that provided the virtue of self possession and control. In addition, that idea behind most of these reforms was religion which formed the concept that freedom was not having the choice to sin so that one could be free of sin. This lead to perfectionism, or the belief that individuals and society were capable of unlimited improvement. This caused reformers to improve their communities, spurring temperance, education reform, and abolition. Reflection On Present Day By Solnit We as a society are Connected to death, to fear, to the unknown, but in being so connected one could feel empathy, passion, and heroism as well (Solnit, 55) . Solnit is speaking of the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks in 2001. A life altering event for our entire nation struck in a blink of an eye. The same reaction spread with school shootings such as Columbine and Sandy Hook. We, as a nation, bond over tragedy and failure in order to boost back morale, strength, and hope. Solnit, in this section of reading, focuses on the act of togetherness, from 9/11 to the Zapatistas, to present day. Time and time again our society is shown to thrive amongst our walls in the act of togetherness, producing more hope, reason, and caring than any other time. Low funded school means that teachers will get laid off, which will increase class size, increase the burden on the teacher, and after school programs will be minimized. If the class is overcrowded a teacher wouldn t be able to teach students according to curriculum. • 23. Analysis Of Harry Potter And Dumbledore In this film critique, I will be analyzing the first half of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer s Stone. The film starts out on Privet Drive in the dark of night emphasizing something dark but important is about to happen. Dumbledore is standing under a street light and is using magic to put the rest of the street lights out when he notices a cat, who quickly transforms into Professor McGonagall. The darkness and low voices emphasize danger and suspense. The character who plays Professor Dumbledore, Richard Harris, is a perfect because of his voice and composure, he goes along perfectly with the book! His presence demands respect and his composure makes him seem wise. The same goes for the Dursley family; Aunt Petunia, Fiona Shaw, is a sharp /crinkle nosed, rude looking skinny woman, Uncle Vernon, Richard Griffiths, is fat and boastful showing he s a horrible person, Dudley, Harry Melling, is a short, fat and pig like looking boy his dad with the attitude combination of both parents, creating a monster of a child. Daniel Ratcliffe is perfect for the part of Harry Potterbecause he s small, skinny, you would never suspect anything abnormal by just looking at him. Harry lives under the stairs at the Dursley with a lock on the outside of the cabinet and slot just big enough for a dinner plate. This emphasizes the Dursleys feelings about Harry being there. The bystander effect theory is a psychological phenomenon were people do not help others in emergency situations when there are others present, the bigger the crowd the less likely chance of someone stepping in to help. People are just trying to live life and survive and if the situation is too out of control where we are talking about guns being involved, then that s where people would draw a line and not do anything to help. People start to fear that their own life becomes in danger if they try to intervene in something of that magnitude. I can completely understand why people would be more hesitant when it comes to helping others when they fear their own life can be taken from them. This type of fear is one of the main reason the Holocaust happened and people did very little to help the Jews. During the Holocaust there were mass killings involving huge crowds and a very massive witness group. The Germans were brain washed to think the Jews were horrible people and they blamed them for taking away their dignity as a country. There are reports of dozen of witness that stood by and did nothing to help. A photographer took pictures of a man, a Luthuanian, beating 30 40 men to death with a crow bar then watched as they sang their national anthem on top of the dead bodies. With a crowd so enormous and so many people with hate in their hearts it would be so hard for someone to intervene in that type of situation. • 25. Importance Of Extinction Of Plants And Animals The extinction of plants and animals is a major issue that cannot be ignored by society. Although extinction and decline in population is a natural occurrence, the rate of population decline and extinction has been highly escalated because of human acts such as deforestation and overhunting. Researchers and scientists have tried to combat these issues and prevent extinctionthrough captive breeding programs and conservation education, but are criticised for housing animals in zoos or even theme parks. These obstacles have made it more difficult to effectively protect endangered animals and educate about the importance of conservation. Dedicated researchers and zoologists also struggle when studying the behavior and ecology of these animals because of this criticism. Zoos have not always been classified as public institutes geared to entertain and educate in a family friendly way. The common zoothat society is familiarized with today first stemmed from the exotic animal collection of royal families which eventually led to both human entertainment through circuses and education through modern day animal research programs. Obviously both are very different, but animal research in captivity, such as zoos, is still criticized. Many present day zoos are still condemned for animal mistreatment similar to that of circuses, but both have completely dissimilar goals. Today s zoos are held to strict animal standards and are also highly regarded for the work they do to conserve ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Stereotypes In Hollywood Stereotypes A deep look into some Latino performances shows the heroes who have withstood and undermined the stereotyping system however much they were involved in the Hollywood films where stereotyping is accustomed. Actors have less to contribute to the authorship as they are hired and are supposed to act wherever scene they are assigned to serve. Latino actors may not necessarily be considered Latino enough to take part in a scene; this has become a casting practice. Worse still we have actors from specific ethnic groups who cannot stand up and depart from stereotypes. Actors original performance is not appreciated in a way that during production the actor follows every instruction from makeup artists to the director. Lack of appreciation frustrates the contribution of the filmartist. Performance should include body movement, gestures, facial expression and voice which should not make the character disappear into actor or actor going into the character. The only way Latino actors will feature to be less stereotypical is by embracing the true artist performance. A case to show countering Hollywood stereotypeis evident through characters like Lupe Velez s energetic in an uncontrolled way performance, Jose Ferrer s sweet and soothing voice, and Gilbert Roland s attention capturing costume and upright posture. Differences Between Minority And Minority Groups Abstract This study explores the relationships between majority and minority groups and their awareness of blatant and subtle prejudice, by priming either common or dual identity. It was hypothesized that due to their marginalization, minority groups will be more aware of both subtle and blatant prejudice and that those primed with dual identity will show a similar heightened awareness. The results demonstrated that majority groups were more aware of both types of prejudice, contradicting many previous results in this area. This study was conducted on an Australian population, making it unique, and possibly explaining the contrary results. However, it has also been suggested that the social stigma surrounding racism in our society has increased the awareness by majority groups, as they strive to be politically correct and avoid judgment by their peers. Another worthy discussion point is the internalization of prejudice by minority groups living in a majority dominated society. How Common and Dual Identity Can Influence Majority and Minority Awareness of Subtle and Blatant Prejudice In modern society, prejudiced ideas and values are present amongst majority dominated societies (Banaji Devos, 2005). Minority groups, and individuals with a heightened sense of cultural affiliation to their ethnicity, have been shown to be more aware of subtle prejudice than majority groups (Operario Fiske, 2001). In the early sixteenth century, scholars were studying the millennial expectations of the ancient worlds that had become such a radical component for the central institutions of Christendom. Advocates of this new millennial belief appeared after the completion of the New Testament. They argued diverse assumptions of this revolution, but found common roots in Revelation 20:1 10, which states that those who died for defending Jesus would sit at God s right hand with the power to judge and Satan would be released from his prison and thrown into a fiery lake of burning sulfur where he would be tormented. Essay on Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo Da Vinci Most people probably think of Leonardo Da Vinci as just a painter but in reality he was actually also a expert drawer, an ingenious inventor, and a marvelous scientist. Over a period of twenty five years Leonard dissected around thirty human bodies as well as cows, birds, frogs, bears, and monkeys. Of these bodies he made over two hundred tedious drawings. Another thing to remember is beings the process of drawing took so long the bodies would start decomposing before he was finished with all of the drawings in which he intended to make. Leonardo Da Vinci was born on Saturday April 15, 1452. His father named Ser Piero Da Vinci was an important man, leading citizen who studied at the University of Vinci, and ... As most people know Leonardo was a magnificent artist however some people don t realize being an artist doesn t always mean you re good at painting and drawing. Leonardo was originally brought to the Moor who ruled the duchy of Milan by music not art. The Moor became Leonardo s patron after Leonardo painted an altarpiece for the Church of San Francesco Grande. When the Moor decided to make a bronze statue of his father on horseback Leonardo stepped up to take on the task. Leonardo planned to make the horse first then make the rider separately and add it on later. He studied horses drawing the best the Moor had in his stable he also measured them even dissecting horses to make sure he had the plans just right. In 1493 Leonardo displayed his clay model that was full size. He still had to cast the enormous statue, which could prove to be the hardest part of making the sculpture. He invented a new way to get all the molten bronze into the mold quickly so it didn t crack when it cooled. When all the bronze required to make the statue (more than seventy tons) was gathered and the molds made the Moor used the bronze to make cannons. The would be eighth wonder of the world was never cast and when the French captured Milan in 1499 the soldiers used Leonardo s clay model for target practice. It eventually crumbled so even the model of the would be eighth wonder of the world is not around today. As an artist Leonardo also made three famous paintings. The Last ... • 40. Who Is Sister Carrie Rebel Although Dreiser makes several generalizations about women at the beginning of the novel, which might lead the author to be seen as conservative, his empathy for Carrie s position seems to represent his view on contemporary women. Thus, Sister Carrie is initially described as having an average little conscience , and being urged into the position of the traditional women (Dreiser 92). However, despite the fact that she wants to be a consumerist, Carrie can certainly be considered to be a rebel. When the Hansons tried to transform her personality, her heart revolted as much as when Hurstwood attemped to narrow her desires (324). Coming to New York with her alleged husband, she, thus, started to have a few opinions of her own (Dreiser 280).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Carrie as a character depicts this transformation. At first, she is a model of True Woman , then she becomes a modern New Woman. She does not want to follow the ideal women were supposed to follow and, thus, she rebels not only against her husband Hurstwood, but also against society and the common social and economic discrimination. When Carrie decides to seek a job again, the story turns and she changes places with Hurstwood, who is now unemployed. This is described as the beginning of the new order (Dreiser 377) and is the main decisive turning point in the novel. Carrie starts earning money, covering all of her and Hurstwood s living cost, while he does the grocery shopping. We can see that Carrie does not understand his unemployment, claiming that [n]o man could go seven months without finding something if he tried (Dreiser 380). Thus, the novel as a whole demonstrates how this social and economic rise of the New Women is not only connected but congruent to a certain decline of the male gender, designated as a crisis of masculinity by historians (Brod, Harry. The Case for Men s Studies. The Making of Masculinities: The New Men s Studies. Ed. Harry Brod. Boston: Allen Unwin, 1987, pp. 39 62.). For someone like George Hurstwood, who is a married manager of Fitzgerald and Moy s, the loss of his ability to maintain his status seems to represent this crisis accurately. Within this shift, a major change in gender relation follows. Carrie and Hurstwood move into different social and economic directions, drawing attention to the restructure of Victorian assumptions regarding male and female understanding. Dreiser metaphorically remarks this: with the tables turned, she was looking down, rather than up, to her lover (184). As aforementioned, with Hurstwoods s downfall, Dreiser might want to point out how even rich and successful people happen to lose all what they have. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Our present study represents a further pharmacological evaluation of zinc effects at 5 HT1AR and serotonin neurotransmission in the context of zinc antidepressant like activity. Since the role of postsynaptic 5 HT1AR in the pathophysiology of depression and in the action of antidepressants is widely discussed in the literature (see [9] for review), our present study evaluated the effect of zinc at postsynaptic 5 HT1AR in the PFC and Hp of rats after acute and chronic zinc treatments. Neither acute nor chronic zinc treatment induced significant changes in 5 HT1AR mRNA in the PFC or Hp (Fig. 1a, c). However, chronic zinc treatment increased protein levels of 5 HT1AR in the Hp by 78% (t=3.137, df=14, p=0.007) relative to control rats (Fig. 1d). Analysis Of The Movie The Graduate Essay Edward Brambila English 2 Prof. Sosner 12/16/2016 The Art of Symbolism in The Graduate The movie The Graduate is a struggle story of a fine caliber that falls under the genre of comedic drama. Some might even argue that it was one of the best films of its time and even till this day. The way the movie blends characters is anything but superficial and its use of symbolism to describe said characters leaves little more to be desired. While some may not like the movie and say it falls short the movie has proper use of symbolism through the use of multiple props, it also uses symbolic statements as a way to strengthen Dustin Hoffman s character s archetype and clue in on specific details which in turn shows us the relationships between him and other characters. Of the many symbolic details the first two we encounter at the very beginning of the film are cluing us in on the character of Dustin Hoffman who is known as Benjamin Braddock. The two details happen almost simultaneously, one being the song The Sound of Silence by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel and the other is the symbolic action of him sliding across the screen on an airport conveyor belt. The first detail, the song, suggests that the character Benjamin or Ben is lost in the world. He has no idea where to go from this point in his life forward.
