Character Development In Cathedral s Cathedral
There are ample ways to describe and trace character development in. The setting in which a
character resides, other present characters, and the tone in which those characters interact all
guide a character s development. In individual stories, more specific things can be used to trace
character development. In Cathedral, television plays a significant role in the development of
narrator. At the beginning of the story, the narrator introduces conflict by stating his dislike for
blind people. He sees the blind as dull, helpless beings. Before Robert arrives, the narrator applies
these stereotypes to him. While expressing his dislike, the narrator confesses that [His] idea of
blindness came from the movies. (34) This confession not only shows the narrator s ignorance, but
also the impact of television on him. His ignorance leaves ample room for characterdevelopment.
The narrator continues to extend his disdain to Roberts wife, Beulah. He looks down upon their
wedding, and comments on what a pitiful life [Beulah] must have led. (37) Although he made
negative remarks about their marriage, learning of Beulah s death brought about sympathy... Show

As he draws, the narrator relaxes. When the television program ends, he stops to let Robert feel
the page. The program s ending is notable because, usually, the narrator gives as much of his
attention to the program as possible. However, spending time with Robert has taken over his
interest. When Robert tells the narrator to close his eyes while drawing, the narrator does so and
claims it was like nothing else in [his] life up to now. (46) The narrator experiences his own
version of physical blindness, a disability he looked down upon in the beginning. The choice to
keep his eyes closed, to stay blind, shows the narrator s growth by overcoming his ignorance and
forming a connection with a person he once

The Oppression of Caliban in The Tempest Essay
The Oppression of Caliban in The Tempest
William Shakespeare s, The Tempest, provides insight into the hierarchy of command and servitude
by order of nature. This play uses the relationship between its characters to display the control of
the conqueror over the conquered. It also shows how society usually places the undesirable
members at the bottom of the chain of command, even though they may be entitled to a higher
social status. For example, the beginning of the play opens with a scene on a boat in the midst of a
terrible storm. The boatswain, who is under the command of the royal party, attempts to keep the
boat from sinking.
Members of the royal party, however, persist in interfering with his duties. The boatswain... Show

Caliban s monstrosity,
however, out Herods Herod (Draper 89).
According to the other inhabitants of the island, Caliban is a monster. He is a symbol of what
they never want to become. Caliban reminds them to act as though they are worthy of their high
social status. He is the painfully realistic entity around whom the other rulers on the island silently
rally in order to maintain a social balance. They abhor him but desperately desire to possess at the
same time. On a narrower scale, the oppression of the underdog is obvious in the undesirable
Caliban and his relationship to Prospero, Miranda, Ariel and Ferdinand.
Prospero, the self appointed king of the island upon which everyone eventually becomes
shipwrecked, immediately oppresses Caliban and claims him as his slave, even though Caliban
was the original inhabitant of the island. Prospero and his daughter are technically guests in
Caliban s home. Caliban is the son of the devil and Sycorax, a witch. Prospero uses Caliban s
unsavory origin as an excuse to enslave him. He claims that he is a bad seed, and he deserves a
life of servitude. He never actually justifies the situation with a logical explanation, so he must use
whatever information he can think of as a poor excuse to exploit Caliban for his own self
propagation. Prospero is even bold enough to suggest that by enslaving Caliban, he is actually
extending charity towards him. He feels that

Addiction With Substance Addiction
Addiction is a term used to describe the continued or compulsive use of a substance or engaging in
an activity that provides a pleasurable experience, despite the interference or negative effects it
poses on an individual and their responsibilities (PsychologyToday, 2017). Addiction involves the
brains reward, motivation and memory circuit (American Society of AddictionMedicine, 2017).
Dysfunction within these circuits leads to the pathological response of pursing reward from a
substance or other behaviours (American Society of Addiction Medicine, 2017). Two of the main
commonly known addictions are to alcohol and psychoactive substances; however, addiction also
encompasses a variety of behaviours such as eating, sex, shopping and gambling
(PsychologyToday, 2017). In this paper I will explore the complex health challenge substance
addiction, how the concepts resilience hardiness and vulnerability relate to substance addiction, at
risk individuals and explore resources available for individuals who suffer with this chronic disease.
In the past, substance abuse and substance dependence were two different categories in the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a manual used to aid health care providers
in diagnosing and understanding mental illness (Casey, 2017). Recently, the manual has combined
the two categories into one substance use disorder . Substance use disorder encompasses
hazardous use of a substance causing social or legal problems and

Analysis Of Edith Wharton s House Of Mirth
From Gender Roles to Gender Goals
Edith Wharton s novel, House of Mirth, written in 1905 centers around Lily Bart, a single woman
in her late twenties, who is constantly struggling to maintain her status in high society. Lily
navigates herself through the upper class with a double consciousness . This double consciousness
enables her to recognize ...that [she] is at the same time inside and outside the ideology of gender;
and conscious of being so, conscious of that twofold pull, of that division, that doubled vision
(Carson 695). Throughout the text she is constantly trying to balance a life of being a financially
independent woman or the New Woman Wharton and her contemporaries added to the female
archetypes, but then having to abide in the gender roles that society had established. The limits of
her sex contribute to her inevitable failure by the end of the novel but the knowledge of them
aided her deconstructing her role as a woman. This double consciousness is an advantage since
she is able to manipulate the upper class, but the facade she tries to maintain in order to achieve
her goal financial stability contributes to her falling victim to the society she tried to configure to
her own desires. In this paper, I will argue how the double consciousness of Lily Bart deconstructed
the tradition woman to assert the New Woman .
I.

Creolisation in the Caribbean
Question #5: Why is the Creolisation theory considered a more useful means of theorizing the
Caribbean? How has Douglarisation contributed to the identity debate?
Even though there is a separation created by geographic distances and different independent states,
it is still possible to talk in general terms of the Caribbean, and of Caribbean literature. The common
experience of colonialism, displacement, slavery, indenture, emancipation and nationalism has
shaped most West Indian environments, creating a unity of experience that can be identified as
particularly Caribbean. These general experiences, more importantly have been the breading ground
of a whole new society and culture, than can be defined most effectively by employing the ... Show

Many Caribbean writers have addressed the issue of creolisation and the creation of a unique
Caribbean identity in their works. Many of them wrote in an attempt to capture the very meaning
and significance of a West Indian world, using novels of childhood as their medium.Lamming s
In the Castle of My Skin, Michael Anthony s The Year in San Fernando, McDonald s The
Humming Bird Tree, Merle Hodge s Crick Crack Monkey and Jean Rhy s Wide Sargasso Sea were
all in part attempts at capturing and savouring something of the essence of Caribbean life through
the developing consciousness of the child. Somehow the discovery and identification with this
world seemed better and more accurately revealed through the impressions of the growing child.
V.S. Naipaul and Samuel Selvon assessed the merits of the creolisation of the East Indian in A
House for Mr. Biswas and A Brighter Sun respectively. In both novels exploration centered on the
creolisation of the East Indian and on the nature and quality of his adjustment in the colonial
society. Indian characters moved from enclosed peasant worlds into a wider colonial world, and the
movement was in both novels an exploration and a growth in awareness and sensibility.
This creolisation or mixing of cultures is evident

Representation In Heart Of Darkness Essay
The Others Representation in Conrad s Heart of Darkness
Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness is one of the most known novels in English literature. The
story begins when Marlow, who works for a Belgian company, went on a journey to the heart of
Africa as a steamship captain. Through his journey, he heard the name of Kurtz for the first time.
Then the name is repeated many times, which made Marlow, who is our narrator in addition to
another unknown narrator, interested to know about Kurtz. Kurtz works for the company as an
ivory trader in the Congo which was at that time one of Belgium s colonies. According to Marlow
Kurtz was the ideal English man, or as what he called him a remarkable man , who holds the
banner of civilization. Marlow s dream ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Or does it belong to the company? I think it belongs to the Congo and to the Congolese. Neither
Kurtz nor the company has the right to claim that the ivory belongs to him.
Finally, I believe that Conrad s Heart of Darkness embodies racism to Africa and for women, in
which both are ignorant, silenced and nameless. Conrad s sympathy with Africans under the
colonization of Belgium, does not give him the right to represent them and to celebrate English
Imperialism. Albeit that people of Africa have different skin color or different shape from the
European, they are still human beings and no one has the right to dehumanize them.
Chinua Achebe in his essay An Image of Africa asks not to consider Conrad s Heart of Darkness as
one of the best English novels, because the Africans suffer for a very long time by the
dehumanization and by the European s representation of them. Chinua Achebe states that:
I am talking about a book which parades in the most vulgar fashion prejudices and insults from
which a section of mankind has suffered untold agonies and atrocities in the past and continues to
do so in many ways and many places today. I am talking about a story in which the very humanity
of black people is called in question.

Literature Analysis: My Last Duchess and Ulysses
Robert Browning and Alfred Lord Tennyson are celebrated authors and poets in the field of field
of literature. A deeper analysis of some of their works displays particular similarities and distinct
differences that make each one of them unique. For instance, Browning s My Last Duchess and
Tennyson s Ulysses show similarities in the overall theme, death, but each brings it out in different
styles. This essay explains the comparison of the two poems in detail and the respective
significance of use of stylistic devices.
My Last Duchess
Browning uses conventional styles to create his poem. He constructs his sentences to rhyme in
twos. It is written in free ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Browning emphasizes on rhyme, Tennyson focuses on the thoughts of the old and retired
pirate, Ulysses. He uses words more to convey the message than to follow grammatical rules. He
also uses simple words to describe the profound contrast of his retirement to his kingdom,
distanced from the adventurous life he once lived. Thus, the structure uses a mixture of flashback
and foreshadowing Ulysses life during the Trojan War, and his son s life after his (Ulysses ) demise.
The persona of the poem is Ulysses himself. Just like the Duke in My Last Duchess, he uses
dramatic monologue. This is demonstrated when he talks to his soldiers during his past years as an
energetic youth. Using the stylistic feature of flashback, he takes readers through his past life,
connoting the excitement it brought him. He then brings one back to the present that immensely
shows the contrast and equal discontent that Ulysses feels. The flashback also aids in building the
image of the poem, in order to identify oneself with the persona. Furthermore, he uses a mixture of
archaic and simple words, which is also seen in Browning s

One Child Policy Dbq
The one child policy was established in China in 1979 because the population was growing
extremely fast. The one child policy is a law that prevents families from having more than one
child. It only applies to the Han Chinese ethnic group, which makes up 90% of the Chinese
population. Sibling less parents are allowed to have two children. Some Chinese people are in
favor of the one child policy (OCP) because their lives were made easier. Other people felt it was
not fair to have their rights taken away. I think that the OCP was not a good idea because there s
not enough information to support that it was a good idea. The intention of the OCP was to lower

Those are still good jobs but they could have better jobs like CEOs or presidents of a company,
but those jobs are usually given to men. The article makes it sound so great but if you read in
between the lines you notice how there is some discrimination, for a person to learn multiple
languages they should have a more important job than a secretary.
People s view on the OCP is biased based on their experience. Document F tells the story of 2
kids that were born under the OCP. One, which was a boy from a rural area, who loved the OCP,
the other was a girl who lived in an urban area and didn t like it at all. The girl said that all the
pressure was on her to be the best and she wanted a sibling to share the pressure with. On the
other hand, the boy said that if you have siblings your parents would not give you the most they
could give you. He said everyone would be average because you would be lacking emotional and
financial support. Your parents would have to share whatever they could offer with all their
children. I think that is a biased thought because very successful people like Bill Gates, Yao
Ming, and Jackie Chan all had siblings and still did good in life. Both the boy and the girl are
only thinking on how it affects them and not the future of the country. All in all, I don t think that
the one child policy was a good idea. People should be able to have as many kids as they want or
no kids at all. The one child policy wasn t

From Burning Barns to Burning Bridges
Psychologist Sigmund Freud is credited with saying, I cannot think of any need in childhood as
strong as the need for a father s protection. Unfortunately, not every child has that need fulfilled.
Such is the circumstance with Sarty in William Faulkner s short story Barn Burning. Abner, Sarty s
father, selfishly neglects the nurturing of his offspring in order to carry out his own dishonorable
deeds. Sarty s mother, for reasons of her own, is unable to offer any significant maternal protection.
As such, Sarty is left floundering should he follow in his father s disgraceful footsteps, hoping for
approval that will lead to paternal protection, or should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Quite often the story contains the element of the past and the promise of the future: the protean
narrator intermixes Sarty s past, present, and future...by superimposing these layers of time on one
another (Ford 527). An especially telling example occurs when young Sarty, who longs to believe
that his father is good, reluctantly agrees that Abner s actions are justified (Faulkner 803). Only
moments before this hesitant affirmation, the narrator offers a glimpse of thirty year old Sarty
telling himself, If I had said they wanted only truth, justice, he would have hit me again (803).

Introduction What is Differentiated Instruction?
Students are different, just like people are different. There are many varied groups of students in
one classroom. Differentiated instruction is a process for teaching and learning for students of
differing abilities in the same class (Hall et al., 2011). The intent of differentiating instruction is to
maximize each student s growth, and individual success by meeting each student where he or she
is, and assisting in the learning process (Hall et al., 2011). Instruction is differentiated in classrooms

In 1968, Fred Keller introduced the Keller Plan, to help students in Brazil master content at their
own pace. Curriculum was short units of written texts that students moved thru at their own pace,
and then took a test. If they failed a test, they repeat coursework until they could demonstrate
mastery. Students in these PSI courses (Keller Plan) learn course content better, remember it longer,
and like the experience more than students in traditional classes, (Fox, 2004).

curriculum should be interactive, teachers should scaffold by students performance, and

The first amendment of the United States is Freedom of Speech. What exactly is freedom of
speech? Freedom of speech is Congress not prohibiting the free exercise or abridging the
freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to
petition the government for a redress of grievances . In the majorities eyes it means the people
of the United States should have the right to express their disapproval and speak out on social

Diabetes Affects The Body
Diabetes is a disease that affects the use of insulin in the body. According to the Merriam Webster

Marco Polo s Paradise In Heaven, Suzhou On Earth
When the Venetian merchant Marco Polo traveled to the orient, he saw many wondrous things.
Two cities that inspired him a lot were Suzhou and Beijing. In Suzhou he saw people who could
conquer the world and in Beijing he saw a city that had a standing truly unparalleled among the
cities of the World. These descriptions showed the immense greatness that both cities bestowed on
guests from abroad and it is something that hasn t changed over the years.
Over the years the Chinese gave Suzhou s grandeur this description: Paradise in Heaven, Suzhou
and Hangzhou on Earth. For Suzhou the splendor started in the year 514 BC when King Helu of
the Wu state decided to build a capital city near Lake Taihu. He tasked the project to his minister,
Wu Zixu, who designed the city to ensure environmental harmony. The effects of this can still be
seen today as modern day Suzhou is equal parts water and land.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Bill Clinton s Speech
In order to ensure her speech resonated in the mind of leaders from around the world, Clinton at
times uses and authoritative and urgent tone, while also utilizing techniques such as repetition. At
one point in her speech, Clinton s tone shifted as she became extremely passionate. She cried, the
history of women has been a history of silence. Even today, there are those who are trying to
silence our words. But the voices of this conference and of the women at Huairou must be heard
loudly and clearly: It is a violation of human rightswhen babies are denied food, or drowned, or

Clinton takes a bold move to demand action from the leaders at the conference and in order to do
that she must shift her tone to represent the authority she wants to present. There is another time
in her speech where Clinton used an anaphora. Another point Clinton made sure to repeat is that
families will flourish (Clinton) when women are healthy and educated , full and equal partners
in society , and free from violence (Clinton). A major point in Clinton s speech was that in order
to help all people to succeed, women must first be allowed to succeed, and the people that will
be directly affected because of this success would be the families. Clinton understood that the
well being of families is a point that would connect her audience because it is a topic that
concerned most people, so she made sure to repeat that phrase several times. The mention of
families is so important because even though there were so many people who opposed her
speech, but they were also groups that were concerned for the well being of families, so she was
able to use families to unite even the people who are against her. When looking at the diction of
Clinton s speech, she uses three different types of word

Persuasive Essay On Recycling
With the rapidly increasing use of plastic, aluminum, and paper materials, it only makes sense that
the problem we chose to focus on is recycling. In the world of engineering, recycling has been a
hot topic for many years, so for one to say that deriving an idea that hasn t been done before is
difficult, that would be an understatement. As any group of well educated engineers would, we
started our journey at the drawing board. The brainstormingprocess was potentially the most time
consuming section of our task, given we easily spent over fifteen hours spouting off ideas and
concepts for anything that we thought we could do that we could patent. We then realized it wasn t
just about us getting a patented idea, it was about making a difference. So, we then realized
something that could make a difference is one of the things that we have been taught the
importance of since we were in elementary school. That was recycling.
Now that the first step of the brainstorming process was over, which was finding a general
problem area, we then needed to figure out what in the world it was that we were going to do
that no one else had done before. After a couple of days of brainstorming, we quickly realized
that instead of coming up with a fresh idea, innovating what is imperfect was the perfect way to
approach this. In order to find where the problems laid, we had to go to the consumer. We began
asking our friends, family, and even a few random people what they thought the biggest issue was
that was hindering them from recycling. After a few conversations, accessibility and attraction
seemed to be the greatest factors.
With this in mind, we of course went back to the brainstorming process to figure out what
exactly it was that we were going to to do and how we would do it. After a few off the wall ideas,
followed by some mediocre ones, we decided we were going to innovate the recycling bin itself.
We figured up a plan to make the bin something that people could interact with and that could shred
whatever recyclable material that you put in it without requiring electric power. We then went with
a slow, torque based, hand crank that would be attached to some sort of shredding mechanism, one
strong enough to shred even

Bottle Sliping Persuasive Essay
Do you feel let down when you fail a bottle flip multiple times in a row? Do you seem to
unintentionally shift your focus when someone is bottle flipping around you? These issues are
common to the average teenager and can cause some problems to those attempting the bottle
flipping challenge and those around them. Overall, bottle flipping is a negative aspect that causes
frustration, depression, and a shift in focus.
Though most teenagers get excited when they hear the thud of a water bottle land, for adults, the
constant noise can add to their already inexplicably enormous stress. Picture this, if you constantly

Women During the Gold Rush Essay example
Women During the Gold Rush The Gold Rush was one of the most influential times in
California History. During the four years from 1848 1852, 400,000 new people flooded into the
state. People from many countries and social classes moved to California, and many of them
settled in San Francisco. All this diversity in one place created a very interesting dynamic.
California during the Gold Rush, was a place of colliding ideals. The 49ers came from a very
structured kind of life to a place where one was free to make up her own rules. Freedom was in
the very air Californians breathed, for the country offered a unique and seductive drought of liberty.

Letters, journals, and reminiscences written by adventurers during the Gold Rush vividly illustrate
the internal struggle which people experienced. This is especially true of the writing by women of
the time. It is a long held myth that the gold rush was almost completely male. Yet, most trail
diaries mention the presence of women.4 Still, they were quite a minority. The 1860 census reveals
that in San Francisco that year, men outnumbered women three to two. Lopsided though this ratio
may be, there were enough women in California to have quite an influence, and perhaps they
struggled even more with their new freedom than the men. More restraint was expected from
women, and it was their duty to keep their husbands and children proper. How they chose to deal
with their new surroundings would have greatly impacted their families. Women offer an
interesting perspective, as women were traditionally the epitomes of Victorian morality. Historian
Lillian Schlissel writes that unlike the men, ...women did not always see the venture in the clear
light of the expectation of success. There were often shadows in their minds, dark areas of
reservation. 5 Women usually had little say in the matter of going West; therefore, it is logical that
they would see things in a different light than their adventure seeking husbands. Still, many women
were able to see the positive aspects of California, if not

Properties of Ammonium Compounds
All ammonium compounds, which contain an ammonium ion (NH4+) and a negative ion, are
thermally unstable. A. Discuss two ways that ammonium compounds decompose when they are
heated. What chemical reaction is involved in the thermal decomposition of ammonium persulfate?
The ammonium ion is known for exhibiting unique thermal decomposition reactions when heated
because there are a considerable number of stable crystalline salts of the ammonium ion [14798 03
9] NH+4 (Clintern, 2007). Ammonium acetates emit toxic ammonia fumes when heated, while
ammonium bicarbonate decomposes below its melting point, dissociating into ammonia, carbon
dioxide, and water (Clintern, 2007). There are some ammonium salts, such as ammonium
dichromate, ammonium permanganate, ammonium nitrate, and ammonium nitrite, which
undergo an oxidation reduction reaction after being heated: (NH 4 ) 2 Cr 2 O 7 ( s ) Cr 2 O 3 (

Ignorance In The Invisible Man
The Ghanaian Diplomat Kofi Annan once said, Knowledge is power. Information is liberating.
Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family (Annan). Although this
phrase may contain truth, our society has a long history where they heavily rejected notions of
social responsibility and social education, due to the fact that those in power are not able to see its
potential, as they themselves are without knowledge. Even though knowledge is often attributed to
success depending on convenience, certain time periods contained cruel and unusual treatment of a
large group of people based on a variety of unrelated factors. This perspective can be used to better
understand the message of the novel The Invisible Manby Ralph Ellison, a story about the life of a
black man during the late 1920 s or early 1930 s, when racism against black peoplewas prevalent. In
this novel, the author uses literary elements to emphasize that knowledge and intelligence do not
necessarily equal power. The author accomplishes this by showing us the ignorance of those in
power, and how feigning ignorance can lead to a sense of power.
Knowledge is seen as the polar opposite of ignorance. Hence, the narrator s speech in the beginning
of the novel is the first sign that ignorance plagues the majority of the characters in the novel. This
is shown to us by the author when the narrator is attempting to present his speech and makes an
important observation, stating, I spoke automatically

The Dark Knight A Power Struggle
Batman, a name synonymous with the word hero. He was first introduced to the world in
Detective Comics #27 (artist Bob Kane, writer Bill Finger, 1939). He quickly became a fan
favourite and has since then seen numerous film, television, and video game adaptations. The first
film adaptation being Batman (Lambert Hillyer, 1943), a mere 4 years after his introduction in
1939. Throughout his tenured career Batman has faced numerous villains, each of them
reinforcing the themes of evil vs good, power, and anarchy vs order. The themes are especially
prevalent when Batman faces off against his arch rival, and foil, the Joker. In The Dark Knight
(Christopher Nolan, 2008) these themes are perfectly encapsulated in the Joker interrogation
scene. Almost an hour and half into the film is when the interrogation scene takes place. The
scene lasts for approximately five minutes and is comprised of 79 cuts. In a way, the scene
almost has three acts. It starts off with the Joker s perspective of Commissioner Gordon entering
the room to begin his interrogation of the Joker. The Joker is framed to the right, while Gordon
is framed to the left. From the very first shot of the scene, the theme of power is presented. The

Learning Disabled Students With Learning Disabilities Essay
A learning disabled student not only suffers from being below average in academics, but in many
cases these students suffer with mental illnesses. Students with learning disabilities have lower self
determination in academics and struggle in post secondary education (Jameson, 2007). Higher
levels of anxiety and test taking anxiety can additionally be found in students with learning
disabilities (Nelson, Lindstrom, Foels, 2015). Studies also show that students with learning
disabilities have a higher rate of depression (Ashraf, Najam, 2015). Why are learning disabled
individuals struggling with self worth? The extreme social pressures everyone faces daily has a
negative affect students with learning disabilities. Students with learning disabilities are self
conscious of their impairment. Schools should not only focus on giving extra academic assistances
to students with learning disabilities, but also give resources to help fight mental illness in these
students. Students who have learning disabilities should not suffer from low self determination,
anxiety, and depression. There will be discussion on why these students suffer at a higher rate from
mental illness, and discuss a solution to this issue.Social pressure is a feeling that every human

Have you ever tried to shoot a dart at a bullseye? Very hard to do right. Well operating a business

unless you can see in the dark.
2. Not tracking against your actuals.
Once you have a budget you must compare how you are performing to that budget regularly.
Minimally once per quarter. If you don t do this critical step then you have no idea how good or
bad you are doing as compared to that plan. Comparing your budget to your actuals helps you
understand what is really going on in your business. It also helps you see how your business is

3. Not following your budget.
Once you create your budget you MUST FOLLOW IT. Say it with me I WILL FOLLOW MY
BUDGET. There is nothing worse than creating a budget and not following it. Why create a plan

If we break out the third octet displaying the binary values for each bit space this is how it would
be displayed.
128 | 64 | 32 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 2 | 1
This is our class C after applying CIDR notation.
128 | 64 | 32 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 2 / 0 = 254By borrowing the one bit we have changed our subnet mask from
255.255.255.0 to 255.255.254.0.
The next step is to determine what our Network ID s will be, and what our usable hosts will be.
This is done by going back to the binary. There are 8 bits in each octet which is in base 2 the
numerical value of the binary numbers. This is equal to 28 or 256. When we borrow the one bit
from the third octet we are now adding that one bit to the original eight this changes our binary
value from 8 bits to 9 bits which is equal to 29 or 512. This means that we will now have 512 IP
Addresses per subnet, and if we apply the formula 2n 2 this will give us 510 usable hosts per
subnet. We can then take this same formula without the minus 2 to calculate the number of subnets
that we will obtain from this calculation. There are still seven on bits to the left in this octet. This
is equal to 27 or 128. This means that will obtain 128 subnets with this CIDR calculation.
This is the default C before we borrowed the one bit in binary notation,

Importance Of Data Storage Network Security
Importance of Data Storage Network Security
There would be no need for securing data storage network if you can save your information on the
network without anyone altering the content. However, it is almost impossible for you to save
your information in an unsecured data storage network and retrieve it just the way you saved it. In
today s world where hackers are rampant everywhere, the need to secure data storage network
becomes a major concern for security experts.
Over the years, our team of security experts have published a series of articles regarding
information security, and also created many awesome video courses, which are highly valuable in
tackling the information security challenges.
Before we highlight the importance of data storage network security, it is wise to talk briefly
about data storage on its own. Of course, we all know the reasons why we need to save
information in a secure place. And knowing fully that those information are saved in the data
storage network, it is important to device strong security measures to protect the network from
possible harm.
Data storage network security is the process of securing data storage architecture and protect the
information therein from unauthorized people. The reason for data storage network security is to
ensure that the information is well protected from unauthorized individual. Definitely, if the storage
network is not secured, it s almost 100 percent certain that the stored information would be

Essay on Animal Experimentation and Research
Animal Experimentation and Research
In the basement of the psychology department here, a poster hangs on the wall; on it is a picture
of two white lab rats and a caption that reads, ?They?ve saved more lives than 911.? This poster
hangs on the wall of the room where I performed brain surgery on a rat. Many people would be
morally opposed to this and any other form of animal research and experimentation and feel that it
should be banned. This heated debate has been going on for centuries with each side possessing
strong arguments. A central argument to this debate is whether or not animals are moral patients,
with feelings anId the ability to suffer, and if we as humans are entitled to use them as means.
Many people feel that we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Likewise, R.G. Frey, who wrote a book titled Interests and Rights: The Case Against Animals, said
that even though animals can experience unpleasant situations, they have no true desires,
preferences, or memory (?Right from Wrong? 26). If we consider their arguments, it is possible to
conclude that animals are not on the same level as humans, which morally allows us to use them
for experimentation. Clearly, if everyone agreed that an animal is a member of the moral
community?meaning on the same level as humans?then we would not have an ongoing debate.
Perceiving an animal to be on the same level of humans in terms of moral implications would then
mean that we must treat them as equals.
This begins to introduce another fundamental issue involved in this debate: suffering. Jeremy
Bentham introduced this idea with the ubiquitous statement, ?The question is not, Can they
reason? nor Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?? This ability to suffer is often attributed to
somebody who is a member of the moral community. Thus, if we assume animals do suffer, we
must consider them equal to be almost equal to humans?at least equal moral patients. Yet, how
exactly do we know they are suffering? Animals cannot directly communicate their suffering to us,
and they could quite possibly be suffering at times that we do not think they should be. It is easier to

The Genius by Frank O’Connor Essay
The Genius by Frank O Connor
The boy s personality and his intelligence are swiftly established in the opening paragraph. His
mother is presented as being a strong influence on him and appears as a kind of ally against the
rough children savages as she describes them that live and play in the area. It is clear that she
encourages him to regard himself as
different and separate from them, but it is equally obvious that he is not anxious to associate with
them anyway. He describes himself as
a cissy by conviction and says that he regarded the idea of fighting as both unattractive and
dangerous . He avoids rough games and prefers the company of girls to boys only because they
don t fight so much . Religion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the story is supposedly written from the point of view of the boy himself, the tongue
in cheek humour is extremely adult. The adult writer describes how the boy s desire to become
an explorer is expressed through his journeys that take him a whole mile from his home, the
findings of which are recorded in a book called by the very grand title of The Voyages of
Johnson Martin ! Similarly, the adult writer communicates much more sympathy with the long
suffering father who stares moodily at the son whose behaviour and whose interests he does not
understand than he does with the little boy who takes himself so very seriously and is
determined to be a proper genius . In fact, the writer gently mocks the boy s very elevated opinion
of himself by repeatedly referring to him as a genius . Thus, if the story is autobiographical, he is
laughing at the serious and pretentious child he used to be.
The incident of the lame leg is a particularly interesting one because the writer uses it as a means of
presenting the relationships that exist between the boy and both his mother and his father. The
Greek word Oedipus means swollen foot and, in Greek mythology,
Oedipus was a Greek prince who married his mother and murdered his father. The strong attachment
of a son to his mother combined with unconscious feelings of

Sustainability: Consumer Perceptions and Marketing Strategies
Seonaidh McDonald1* and Caroline J. Oates2 1 Aberdeen Business School, The Robert Gordon
University, UK 2 Management School, University of Sheffield, UK
ABSTRACT Studies of green consumer behaviour, in particular purchasing and disposal, have
largely focused on demographics and/or socio demographics, with mixed and frequently
contradictory results. To move the debate forward, we investigated a wide range of 40
sustainability activities with 78 consumers, who placed each activity on a matrix according to

These issues have been tackled differently in each area of literature. In the waste management
literature there has been a move away from trying to describe the recycler by means of their
attitudes and towards identifying them in terms of concrete actions. In the marketing literature, a
different approach has been taken. Here, one response to these problems is to focus on consumers
perceptions of green issues, rather than their identifiable characteristics. This is a key point,
which, if understood, would allow marketers to take a different perspective on segmentation,
based less on the mass market approach of demographics and more on consumer beliefs. One
example of such an approach is a study by Straughan and Roberts (1999), who focused on
perceived consumer effectiveness (PCE) as an insight into ecologically conscious consumer
behaviour (ECCB). PCE was found by Straughan and Roberts to be a key indicator in explaining
ECCB. The researchers emphasize that even if respondents are concerned about the environment,
they are unlikely to be proactive unless they have the belief that individuals can be effective.
Consumers may believe they are informed about the

Essay on Testing Aerodynamic Structures for Our Science...
First, aerodynamics is the study of the motion of the air. Aerodynamics consists of 4 variables,
which is thrust, gravity, lift, and drag. (Tennekes,H, 2009) Aerodynamics has to do with almost
everything dealing with air of course.(Tennekes,H ,2009) For example, it can be air crafts, it can be
wings, it can be birds, it can be a race car. Birds need aerodynamicsso they can glide in the air so
they can also gain enough speed to catch prey. Like a hawk swooping down 70 miles an hour to
get a mouse to eat. Race cars need aerodynamics so that the car structure can have the most air
resistance it wont apply as much pressure onto the car. Like birds air crafts also need
aerodynamics for the wings on the aircraft or the weight of the aircraft.... Show more content on

They have to deal with aerodynamics everyday since they are the scientists who works everyday
trying to make aerodynamic rockets to study space, they have to be very precise when ever they
make a rocket, it can take years, because one time NASA sent a rocket but as soon it hit a certain
altitude it exploded because of on of the cables inside wasn t connected. (NASA,2013) Plus NASA
is also creating aircraft for the future so they can send regular people into space to experience how
it would feel like to go into space, but the trip would cost over 3 million dollars, so you would only
be allowed to get on if you are a millionaire or higher. (NASA,2013) Lift is a force pushes the
object up ward. Drag is related to air resistance, drag is like friction but like in the air. Drag is a
force that causes to pull the object the opposite way, for example if you put your hand out a
window of a car and the car is on the high way, and if you make your hand like a wall and put it
out in the air it would pull your hand back wards. (Paper Airplanes HQ 2013) But if you put your
hand flat down it would just let your hand pass through since its allows air to go around the hand
causing little drag. Thrust is a forward force which allows the object to go into the air, for example
when you have a paper airplane and throw it, that throw with your arm is the thrust for the airplane
to launch.(Auld,D.J. K.Srinivas ,2013) Gravity

Achieving High School Goals
Have you ever wondered about how you ll graduate high school? If you attend college, or go
traveling around the world instead? I know I do, a lot. I especially think about what strengths I
will need in order to take part in college and achieve my goal of being an architect. However, I
can tell that my abilities of getting work done and learn new things quickly will lead me to
graduating high schoolwith a 4.0 grade point average and attending Stanford collegewhich will let
me access my dream job or becoming an architect. But before I can go to Stanford, I first have to
work on my skills.
The skills I need to achieve my goals are; getting my work done fast and learning new things
quickly. If I get my work done fast it will help me achieve my high school goals of getting good
grades, joining sports teams and socially interacting with others and here s why. First of all,
getting my work done fast can result in having a lot of extra free time to do things like hanging
out with friends and doing extra curriculum activities like sports. Second of all, if I get all my
work done quickly i ll have everything turned in resulting with a good grade, maybe even a 4.0
grade point average. My other skill of learning new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

because my grades will be higher. When I play and practice my sports i ll then be able to socially
interact with people that I would never envision hanging out with. For example; People from all
different friend groups come and play all together so i ll be able to meet them and probably
become friends with them. Also when I compete with other teams I will be able to meet them and

Satire In Family Guy
What is a stereotype? The Free Dictionary defines a stereotype as a simplified and standardized
conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group
(Stereotype). Although many people may not realize it, stereotypes influence how they interact
with others each day. People judge others because of their race, ethnicity, religion, and heritage
before they even know the person. These judgements come from stereotypesthey encounter in their
lives. There are plenty of news stories, movies, and television shows that portray these stereotypes.
However, Seth McFarland s television show Family Guy uses satire to highlight stereotypes in

Because there are a lot of jokes and news stories that target Muslims like this, many Muslim and
Arabic people are subjected to this treatment. If there were none of these jokes on the air or if
news anchors told more positive stories about Muslims and Arabs, this cultural group would have
an easier time in society (TEDxYouth). Overall, Family Guy and other media outlets portray
Muslims and Arabs as terrorists, and it makes people afraid of them because of the stereotype. In
addition, another stereotype Family Guy likes to make fun of is people of Asian heritage. Seth
McFarland has written a lot of episodes in which he uses many Asian stereotypes. For instance, in
one episode, he has Peter take an Asian student to the SAT to use as his calculator on the test, as
he tells the student to do math (Family Guy Season 5 Episode 3). Although this might seem like a
positive stereotype for Asians, this can also negatively impact them. There has been studies that
have shown that Asian people feel offended by this stereotype. Dr. Art Markman did a study in
which he had an Asian and a white participant in a room. It is important to note that in the study,
the white person was actually one of the experimenters posing as a participant (Markman). In the
study, each participant was asked to fill out one of two packets. Each packet had different problems
in it, where One packet had math problems in it, while the

Blade Runner, adapted from the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, is the cornerstone

One particular group, led by Osama bin Laden, used these funds later to form Al Qaeda, a terrorist

These consequences, among others, demonstrate the consequences of a society driven by fear.
This is reflected in the world of Blade Runner, where people live in fear and paranoia of the
replicants, creating tests to find these replicants and creating a police force for killing them. It even

Like the US government, the people of the world of Blade Runner ignored how the discrimination

The Health Of The Current U.s. Economy
Situation:
The health of the current U.S. economy appears to be growing gradually. The second quarter real
GDP growth was 3.7% and the unemployment rate declined to 5.3%. The U.S Federal Reserve
(Fed) is expected to raise interest rates in the near future when it sees clear signs of strong
economic growth and improvements in the job market.
The last time the Fed raised interest rates (to 5.25%) was in 2006. This move was soon reversed
as the 8 trillion dollar housing market bust sparked the global financial crises. About 8.7 million
jobs (about 6%) were lost, unemployment rose to about 10% nationally leaving many households
with less to spend and higher debt.
Given its mandate to maximize employment and maintain price stability, the Fed took monetary
policy actions in December 2008 to keep long term interest rates at near zero (between 0.0% and
0.25%) to help stabilize and revive the U.S economy leaving no option for further interest rate
reduction.
The U.S has a hybrid economy and is considered a large market economy, where there is no
central authority directing people what to produce or where to ship it. So, what are the
implications and likely economic consequences of an interest rate hike using the IS LM model in a
closed economy and a basic market for loanable funds?
Closed economy IS LM analysis: The IS LM model focuses on the equilibrium of the goods market
and the money market. In other words, it shows the relationship between real output and interest
rates.

Employee Motivation Is A Feedback Loop Between External...
Change management is a feedback loop between external and internal activities, outcomes and

their structures are still too tall (Rodrigues, 2007, p.711). This is important as employee motivation
is positively correlated with customer satisfaction happy employees make happy customers
(Rodrigues, 2007, p. 698). Success is not attainable in the absence of happy employees. Employees

The components of the two theories are very different yet they seek to accomplish the same goal
to motivate employees (Bobic, 2003, p.245). Based on this, both theories have their place in the
strategic architecture of an organization. The following text will analyze the components of
theories X and Y to verify the added value of each. Theory X is based on the following assumptions.
It is a manager s job to drive and support motivation through the organization of resources, by
directing and controlling employee behavior (McGregor, 2000, p.2).
Humans by nature lack the ability to motivate themselves in the absence of the manager s pressure
and leadership (McGregor, 2000, p.2).
Without the intervention of management employee will only do the bare minimum required of
them (McGregor, 2000, p. 2).
Employees are lacking of ambition , disliking of responsibility and prefer to be led (McGregor,
2000, p.2).
Employees will not willingly engage in activities which result in the achievement of organizational
needs in the absence of management s guidance as they are inherently self centered (McGregor,
2000, p.2).
Employees are by nature resistant to change (McGregor, 2000, p.2).
Motivating factors are based on meeting the individual employees safety and physiological needs
(Bobic, 2003, p.244).
Managers need to set clear rules and expectations for employees in order to drive success

The Redwood Tree-Personal Narrative
I have hunted monsters in the depths of Lake Erie. I have searched for fairies in the Redwood
Forest. I have solved mysteries at the bottom of the ocean. No matter how different they may
seem, all these adventures have one common thread. My brother. When he was born the doctor
said he would never walk, talk, or read. Receiving this news broke my parents hearts. Even with
this disastrous news they set out to prove him wrong. They decided that they would provide him
with every opportunity to strive. By the time I was born, four years later, he could walk and talk
like any other child and he still continues to learn new skills to this day. When I was first born,
my brother called me baby girl because he was not able to pronounce my name. Wherever I was,
that was where he was. I was his favorite person. He would spend hours just staring at me in my
crib waiting for me to do something.
After I learned to talk my brother and I had our own secret language. Even though it was actually
poorly spoken English. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. My parents would complain that
we never made any sense, but we would laugh and play all day without a care in the world. As we

He was truly a glass half full type of person. When I saw this change it scared me. I thought I

  • 2. Character Development In Cathedral s Cathedral There are ample ways to describe and trace character development in. The setting in which a character resides, other present characters, and the tone in which those characters interact all guide a character s development. In individual stories, more specific things can be used to trace character development. In Cathedral, television plays a significant role in the development of narrator. At the beginning of the story, the narrator introduces conflict by stating his dislike for blind people. He sees the blind as dull, helpless beings. Before Robert arrives, the narrator applies these stereotypes to him. While expressing his dislike, the narrator confesses that [His] idea of blindness came from the movies. (34) This confession not only shows the narrator s ignorance, but also the impact of television on him. His ignorance leaves ample room for characterdevelopment. The narrator continues to extend his disdain to Roberts wife, Beulah. He looks down upon their wedding, and comments on what a pitiful life [Beulah] must have led. (37) Although he made negative remarks about their marriage, learning of Beulah s death brought about sympathy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As he draws, the narrator relaxes. When the television program ends, he stops to let Robert feel the page. The program s ending is notable because, usually, the narrator gives as much of his attention to the program as possible. However, spending time with Robert has taken over his interest. When Robert tells the narrator to close his eyes while drawing, the narrator does so and claims it was like nothing else in [his] life up to now. (46) The narrator experiences his own version of physical blindness, a disability he looked down upon in the beginning. The choice to keep his eyes closed, to stay blind, shows the narrator s growth by overcoming his ignorance and forming a connection with a person he once ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Oppression of Caliban in The Tempest Essay The Oppression of Caliban in The Tempest William Shakespeare s, The Tempest, provides insight into the hierarchy of command and servitude by order of nature. This play uses the relationship between its characters to display the control of the conqueror over the conquered. It also shows how society usually places the undesirable members at the bottom of the chain of command, even though they may be entitled to a higher social status. For example, the beginning of the play opens with a scene on a boat in the midst of a terrible storm. The boatswain, who is under the command of the royal party, attempts to keep the boat from sinking. Members of the royal party, however, persist in interfering with his duties. The boatswain... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Caliban s monstrosity, however, out Herods Herod (Draper 89). According to the other inhabitants of the island, Caliban is a monster. He is a symbol of what they never want to become. Caliban reminds them to act as though they are worthy of their high social status. He is the painfully realistic entity around whom the other rulers on the island silently rally in order to maintain a social balance. They abhor him but desperately desire to possess at the same time. On a narrower scale, the oppression of the underdog is obvious in the undesirable Caliban and his relationship to Prospero, Miranda, Ariel and Ferdinand. Prospero, the self appointed king of the island upon which everyone eventually becomes shipwrecked, immediately oppresses Caliban and claims him as his slave, even though Caliban was the original inhabitant of the island. Prospero and his daughter are technically guests in Caliban s home. Caliban is the son of the devil and Sycorax, a witch. Prospero uses Caliban s unsavory origin as an excuse to enslave him. He claims that he is a bad seed, and he deserves a life of servitude. He never actually justifies the situation with a logical explanation, so he must use whatever information he can think of as a poor excuse to exploit Caliban for his own self propagation. Prospero is even bold enough to suggest that by enslaving Caliban, he is actually extending charity towards him. He feels that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Addiction With Substance Addiction Addiction is a term used to describe the continued or compulsive use of a substance or engaging in an activity that provides a pleasurable experience, despite the interference or negative effects it poses on an individual and their responsibilities (PsychologyToday, 2017). Addiction involves the brains reward, motivation and memory circuit (American Society of AddictionMedicine, 2017). Dysfunction within these circuits leads to the pathological response of pursing reward from a substance or other behaviours (American Society of Addiction Medicine, 2017). Two of the main commonly known addictions are to alcohol and psychoactive substances; however, addiction also encompasses a variety of behaviours such as eating, sex, shopping and gambling (PsychologyToday, 2017). In this paper I will explore the complex health challenge substance addiction, how the concepts resilience hardiness and vulnerability relate to substance addiction, at risk individuals and explore resources available for individuals who suffer with this chronic disease. In the past, substance abuse and substance dependence were two different categories in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a manual used to aid health care providers in diagnosing and understanding mental illness (Casey, 2017). Recently, the manual has combined the two categories into one substance use disorder . Substance use disorder encompasses hazardous use of a substance causing social or legal problems and ... • 5. Analysis Of Edith Wharton s House Of Mirth From Gender Roles to Gender Goals Edith Wharton s novel, House of Mirth, written in 1905 centers around Lily Bart, a single woman in her late twenties, who is constantly struggling to maintain her status in high society. Lily navigates herself through the upper class with a double consciousness . This double consciousness enables her to recognize ...that [she] is at the same time inside and outside the ideology of gender; and conscious of being so, conscious of that twofold pull, of that division, that doubled vision (Carson 695). Throughout the text she is constantly trying to balance a life of being a financially independent woman or the New Woman Wharton and her contemporaries added to the female archetypes, but then having to abide in the gender roles that society had established. The limits of her sex contribute to her inevitable failure by the end of the novel but the knowledge of them aided her deconstructing her role as a woman. This double consciousness is an advantage since she is able to manipulate the upper class, but the facade she tries to maintain in order to achieve her goal financial stability contributes to her falling victim to the society she tried to configure to her own desires. In this paper, I will argue how the double consciousness of Lily Bart deconstructed the tradition woman to assert the New Woman . I. It makes her look like the real Lily the Lily I know (Wharton 166). This seems to be a never ceasing topic of who the real Lily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Creolisation in the Caribbean Question #5: Why is the Creolisation theory considered a more useful means of theorizing the Caribbean? How has Douglarisation contributed to the identity debate? Even though there is a separation created by geographic distances and different independent states, it is still possible to talk in general terms of the Caribbean, and of Caribbean literature. The common experience of colonialism, displacement, slavery, indenture, emancipation and nationalism has shaped most West Indian environments, creating a unity of experience that can be identified as particularly Caribbean. These general experiences, more importantly have been the breading ground of a whole new society and culture, than can be defined most effectively by employing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many Caribbean writers have addressed the issue of creolisation and the creation of a unique Caribbean identity in their works. Many of them wrote in an attempt to capture the very meaning and significance of a West Indian world, using novels of childhood as their medium.Lamming s In the Castle of My Skin, Michael Anthony s The Year in San Fernando, McDonald s The Humming Bird Tree, Merle Hodge s Crick Crack Monkey and Jean Rhy s Wide Sargasso Sea were all in part attempts at capturing and savouring something of the essence of Caribbean life through the developing consciousness of the child. Somehow the discovery and identification with this world seemed better and more accurately revealed through the impressions of the growing child. V.S. Naipaul and Samuel Selvon assessed the merits of the creolisation of the East Indian in A House for Mr. Biswas and A Brighter Sun respectively. In both novels exploration centered on the creolisation of the East Indian and on the nature and quality of his adjustment in the colonial society. Indian characters moved from enclosed peasant worlds into a wider colonial world, and the movement was in both novels an exploration and a growth in awareness and sensibility. This creolisation or mixing of cultures is evident ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Representation In Heart Of Darkness Essay The Others Representation in Conrad s Heart of Darkness Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness is one of the most known novels in English literature. The story begins when Marlow, who works for a Belgian company, went on a journey to the heart of Africa as a steamship captain. Through his journey, he heard the name of Kurtz for the first time. Then the name is repeated many times, which made Marlow, who is our narrator in addition to another unknown narrator, interested to know about Kurtz. Kurtz works for the company as an ivory trader in the Congo which was at that time one of Belgium s colonies. According to Marlow Kurtz was the ideal English man, or as what he called him a remarkable man , who holds the banner of civilization. Marlow s dream ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Or does it belong to the company? I think it belongs to the Congo and to the Congolese. Neither Kurtz nor the company has the right to claim that the ivory belongs to him. Finally, I believe that Conrad s Heart of Darkness embodies racism to Africa and for women, in which both are ignorant, silenced and nameless. Conrad s sympathy with Africans under the colonization of Belgium, does not give him the right to represent them and to celebrate English Imperialism. Albeit that people of Africa have different skin color or different shape from the European, they are still human beings and no one has the right to dehumanize them. Chinua Achebe in his essay An Image of Africa asks not to consider Conrad s Heart of Darkness as one of the best English novels, because the Africans suffer for a very long time by the dehumanization and by the European s representation of them. Chinua Achebe states that: I am talking about a book which parades in the most vulgar fashion prejudices and insults from which a section of mankind has suffered untold agonies and atrocities in the past and continues to do so in many ways and many places today. I am talking about a story in which the very humanity of black people is called in question. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Student s Name Professor Course Title Date Literature Analysis: My Last Duchess and Ulysses Robert Browning and Alfred Lord Tennyson are celebrated authors and poets in the field of field of literature. A deeper analysis of some of their works displays particular similarities and distinct differences that make each one of them unique. For instance, Browning s My Last Duchess and Tennyson s Ulysses show similarities in the overall theme, death, but each brings it out in different styles. This essay explains the comparison of the two poems in detail and the respective significance of use of stylistic devices. My Last Duchess Browning uses conventional styles to create his poem. While Browning emphasizes on rhyme, Tennyson focuses on the thoughts of the old and retired pirate, Ulysses. He uses words more to convey the message than to follow grammatical rules. He also uses simple words to describe the profound contrast of his retirement to his kingdom, distanced from the adventurous life he once lived. Thus, the structure uses a mixture of flashback and foreshadowing Ulysses life during the Trojan War, and his son s life after his (Ulysses ) demise. The persona of the poem is Ulysses himself. Just like the Duke in My Last Duchess, he uses dramatic monologue. This is demonstrated when he talks to his soldiers during his past years as an energetic youth. Using the stylistic feature of flashback, he takes readers through his past life, connoting the excitement it brought him. He then brings one back to the present that immensely shows the contrast and equal discontent that Ulysses feels. The flashback also aids in building the image of the poem, in order to identify oneself with the persona. Furthermore, he uses a mixture of archaic and simple words, which is also seen in Browning s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The one child policy is a law that prevents families from having more than one child. It only applies to the Han Chinese ethnic group, which makes up 90% of the Chinese population. Sibling less parents are allowed to have two children. Some Chinese people are in favor of the one child policy (OCP) because their lives were made easier. Other people felt it was not fair to have their rights taken away. I think that the OCP was not a good idea because there s not enough information to support that it was a good idea. The article makes it sound so great but if you read in between the lines you notice how there is some discrimination, for a person to learn multiple languages they should have a more important job than a secretary. People s view on the OCP is biased based on their experience. Document F tells the story of 2 kids that were born under the OCP. One, which was a boy from a rural area, who loved the OCP, the other was a girl who lived in an urban area and didn t like it at all. The girl said that all the pressure was on her to be the best and she wanted a sibling to share the pressure with. On the other hand, the boy said that if you have siblings your parents would not give you the most they could give you. He said everyone would be average because you would be lacking emotional and financial support. Your parents would have to share whatever they could offer with all their children. I think that is a biased thought because very successful people like Bill Gates, Yao Ming, and Jackie Chan all had siblings and still did good in life. Both the boy and the girl are only thinking on how it affects them and not the future of the country. All in all, I don t think that the one child policy was a good idea. The intent of differentiating instruction is to maximize each student s growth, and individual success by meeting each student where he or she is, and assisting in the learning process (Hall et al., 2011). In the world of engineering, recycling has been a hot topic for many years, so for one to say that deriving an idea that hasn t been done before is difficult, that would be an understatement. As any group of well educated engineers would, we started our journey at the drawing board. The brainstormingprocess was potentially the most time consuming section of our task, given we easily spent over fifteen hours spouting off ideas and concepts for anything that we thought we could do that we could patent. We then realized it wasn t just about us getting a patented idea, it was about making a difference. So, we then realized something that could make a difference is one of the things that we have been taught the importance of since we were in elementary school. That was recycling. Now that the first step of the brainstorming process was over, which was finding a general problem area, we then needed to figure out what in the world it was that we were going to do that no one else had done before. After a couple of days of brainstorming, we quickly realized that instead of coming up with a fresh idea, innovating what is imperfect was the perfect way to approach this. In order to find where the problems laid, we had to go to the consumer. We began asking our friends, family, and even a few random people what they thought the biggest issue was that was hindering them from recycling. After a few conversations, accessibility and attraction seemed to be the greatest factors. With this in mind, we of course went back to the brainstorming process to figure out what exactly it was that we were going to to do and how we would do it. After a few off the wall ideas, followed by some mediocre ones, we decided we were going to innovate the recycling bin itself. We figured up a plan to make the bin something that people could interact with and that could shred whatever recyclable material that you put in it without requiring electric power. We then went with a slow, torque based, hand crank that would be attached to some sort of shredding mechanism, one strong enough to shred even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is especially true of the writing by women of the time. It is a long held myth that the gold rush was almost completely male. Yet, most trail diaries mention the presence of women.4 Still, they were quite a minority. The 1860 census reveals that in San Francisco that year, men outnumbered women three to two. Lopsided though this ratio may be, there were enough women in California to have quite an influence, and perhaps they struggled even more with their new freedom than the men. More restraint was expected from women, and it was their duty to keep their husbands and children proper. How they chose to deal with their new surroundings would have greatly impacted their families. Women offer an interesting perspective, as women were traditionally the epitomes of Victorian morality. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family (Annan). Although this phrase may contain truth, our society has a long history where they heavily rejected notions of social responsibility and social education, due to the fact that those in power are not able to see its potential, as they themselves are without knowledge. Even though knowledge is often attributed to success depending on convenience, certain time periods contained cruel and unusual treatment of a large group of people based on a variety of unrelated factors. This perspective can be used to better understand the message of the novel The Invisible Manby Ralph Ellison, a story about the life of a black man during the late 1920 s or early 1930 s, when racism against black peoplewas prevalent. In this novel, the author uses literary elements to emphasize that knowledge and intelligence do not necessarily equal power. The author accomplishes this by showing us the ignorance of those in power, and how feigning ignorance can lead to a sense of power. Knowledge is seen as the polar opposite of ignorance. He quickly became a fan favourite and has since then seen numerous film, television, and video game adaptations. The first film adaptation being Batman (Lambert Hillyer, 1943), a mere 4 years after his introduction in 1939. Throughout his tenured career Batman has faced numerous villains, each of them reinforcing the themes of evil vs good, power, and anarchy vs order. The themes are especially prevalent when Batman faces off against his arch rival, and foil, the Joker. In The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008) these themes are perfectly encapsulated in the Joker interrogation scene. Almost an hour and half into the film is when the interrogation scene takes place. The scene lasts for approximately five minutes and is comprised of 79 cuts. In a way, the scene almost has three acts. It starts off with the Joker s perspective of Commissioner Gordon entering the room to begin his interrogation of the Joker. The Joker is framed to the right, while Gordon is framed to the left. From the very first shot of the scene, the theme of power is presented. The over the shoulder shot, combined with a slight dolly in, conveys to the audience that Joker is the one in control. As Gordon walks up we see that the Joker is completely shrouded in darkness, with only his face being visible. This portrays the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The painting gives an abstract, formless representation of the titular Spanish Dancer and was originally presented as a part of a set of three Spanish themed paintings by MirГі in l945. Spanish Dancer shows how deeply MirГі was influenced by his Spanish heritage and shows his dedication to destroying the way his art was previously perceived by presenting an almost unrecognizable abstract form of a familiar subject. • 31. Learning Disabled Students With Learning Disabilities Essay A learning disabled student not only suffers from being below average in academics, but in many cases these students suffer with mental illnesses. Students with learning disabilities have lower self determination in academics and struggle in post secondary education (Jameson, 2007). Higher levels of anxiety and test taking anxiety can additionally be found in students with learning disabilities (Nelson, Lindstrom, Foels, 2015). Studies also show that students with learning disabilities have a higher rate of depression (Ashraf, Najam, 2015). Why are learning disabled individuals struggling with self worth? The extreme social pressures everyone faces daily has a negative affect students with learning disabilities. Students with learning disabilities are self conscious of their impairment. Schools should not only focus on giving extra academic assistances to students with learning disabilities, but also give resources to help fight mental illness in these students. Students who have learning disabilities should not suffer from low self determination, anxiety, and depression. There will be discussion on why these students suffer at a higher rate from mental illness, and discuss a solution to this issue.Social pressure is a feeling that every human being has experienced. The next step is to determine what our Network ID s will be, and what our usable hosts will be. This is done by going back to the binary. There are 8 bits in each octet which is in base 2 the numerical value of the binary numbers. This is equal to 28 or 256. When we borrow the one bit from the third octet we are now adding that one bit to the original eight this changes our binary value from 8 bits to 9 bits which is equal to 29 or 512. This means that we will now have 512 IP Addresses per subnet, and if we apply the formula 2n 2 this will give us 510 usable hosts per subnet. We can then take this same formula without the minus 2 to calculate the number of subnets that we will obtain from this calculation. There are still seven on bits to the left in this octet. This is equal to 27 or 128. This means that will obtain 128 subnets with this CIDR calculation. Clearly, if everyone agreed that an animal is a member of the moral community?meaning on the same level as humans?then we would not have an ongoing debate. Perceiving an animal to be on the same level of humans in terms of moral implications would then mean that we must treat them as equals. This begins to introduce another fundamental issue involved in this debate: suffering. Jeremy Bentham introduced this idea with the ubiquitous statement, ?The question is not, Can they reason? nor Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?? This ability to suffer is often attributed to somebody who is a member of the moral community. Thus, if we assume animals do suffer, we must consider them equal to be almost equal to humans?at least equal moral patients. Yet, how exactly do we know they are suffering? The adult writer describes how the boy s desire to become an explorer is expressed through his journeys that take him a whole mile from his home, the findings of which are recorded in a book called by the very grand title of The Voyages of Johnson Martin ! Similarly, the adult writer communicates much more sympathy with the long suffering father who stares moodily at the son whose behaviour and whose interests he does not understand than he does with the little boy who takes himself so very seriously and is determined to be a proper genius . In fact, the writer gently mocks the boy s very elevated opinion of himself by repeatedly referring to him as a genius . Thus, if the story is autobiographical, he is laughing at the serious and pretentious child he used to be. • 49. The Health Of The Current U.s. Economy Situation: The health of the current U.S. economy appears to be growing gradually. The second quarter real GDP growth was 3.7% and the unemployment rate declined to 5.3%. The U.S Federal Reserve (Fed) is expected to raise interest rates in the near future when it sees clear signs of strong economic growth and improvements in the job market. The last time the Fed raised interest rates (to 5.25%) was in 2006. This move was soon reversed as the 8 trillion dollar housing market bust sparked the global financial crises. About 8.7 million jobs (about 6%) were lost, unemployment rose to about 10% nationally leaving many households with less to spend and higher debt. Given its mandate to maximize employment and maintain price stability, the Fed took monetary policy actions in December 2008 to keep long term interest rates at near zero (between 0.0% and 0.25%) to help stabilize and revive the U.S economy leaving no option for further interest rate reduction. The U.S has a hybrid economy and is considered a large market economy, where there is no central authority directing people what to produce or where to ship it. So, what are the implications and likely economic consequences of an interest rate hike using the IS LM model in a closed economy and a basic market for loanable funds? Closed economy IS LM analysis: The IS LM model focuses on the equilibrium of the goods market and the money market. In other words, it shows the relationship between real output and interest rates. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Employee Motivation Is A Feedback Loop Between External... Change management is a feedback loop between external and internal activities, outcomes and needs. However, many companies pay more attention to external activities than internal activities their structures are still too tall (Rodrigues, 2007, p.711). This is important as employee motivation is positively correlated with customer satisfaction happy employees make happy customers (Rodrigues, 2007, p. 698). Success is not attainable in the absence of happy employees. Employees are the most important asset held by an organization. The components of the two theories are very different yet they seek to accomplish the same goal to motivate employees (Bobic, 2003, p.245). Based on this, both theories have their place in the strategic architecture of an organization. The following text will analyze the components of theories X and Y to verify the added value of each. Theory X is based on the following assumptions. It is a manager s job to drive and support motivation through the organization of resources, by directing and controlling employee behavior (McGregor, 2000, p.2). Humans by nature lack the ability to motivate themselves in the absence of the manager s pressure and leadership (McGregor, 2000, p.2). Without the intervention of management employee will only do the bare minimum required of them (McGregor, 2000, p. 2). Employees are lacking of ambition , disliking of responsibility and prefer to be led (McGregor, 2000, p.2). Employees will not willingly engage in activities which result in the achievement of organizational needs in the absence of management s guidance as they are inherently self centered (McGregor, 2000, p.2). Employees are by nature resistant to change (McGregor, 2000, p.2). Motivating factors are based on meeting the individual employees safety and physiological needs (Bobic, 2003, p.244). Managers need to set clear rules and expectations for employees in order to drive success ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. The Redwood Tree-Personal Narrative I have hunted monsters in the depths of Lake Erie. I have searched for fairies in the Redwood Forest. I have solved mysteries at the bottom of the ocean. No matter how different they may seem, all these adventures have one common thread. My brother. When he was born the doctor said he would never walk, talk, or read. Receiving this news broke my parents hearts. Even with this disastrous news they set out to prove him wrong. They decided that they would provide him with every opportunity to strive. By the time I was born, four years later, he could walk and talk like any other child and he still continues to learn new skills to this day. When I was first born, my brother called me baby girl because he was not able to pronounce my name. Wherever I was, that was where he was. I was his favorite person. He would spend hours just staring at me in my crib waiting for me to do something. After I learned to talk my brother and I had our own secret language. Even though it was actually poorly spoken English. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. My parents would complain that we never made any sense, but we would laugh and play all day without a care in the world.
