Examples Of Imperialism In The Movie Avatar
The following review will be about a movie named Avatar. Avatar dates back to 2009 and was directed
by James Cameron. The greediness of those in power will always results in the suffering of those lacks
power. This statement refers to the greediness that was depicted in the movie by the Resources
Development Administrators (RDA), which led to a forceful relocation of the Na Vi people. The
following essay will include the discussion of three anthropological themes that were displayed. The
first theme is the power of knowledge. Here I will discuss how knowledge was used against the NA Vi
people. The second theme is the notion of imperialism. The colonization of the Pandora will be
discussed under imperialism. The third theme is the notion of ethics. Under ethics I will discuss the
three main ethical principles that should be followed by every ethnographer.
ANTHROPOLOGICAL THEMES ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Avatar displays a solid anti imperialism message. Imperialism occurs when a particular country
utilises their political and military powers to gain control over other areas of the world. According to
Alcock and Young, 1974 there are five categories of imperialism which are economic, cultural,
political, military, and communication. However, the movie Avatar exhibits two kinds of imperialism
which is military and economic imperialism. The Na Vi people are considered to be poor indigenous
people, while the RDA are technologically literate and rich. The RDA forcefully took over the
Pandora because they wanted to build a Unobtanium. A Unobtanium is a room temperature for energy.
The evidence of imperialism from the movie is displayed when the military force took down the tree
of voices. It is also displayed at the end of the movie where the battle between the people of
Omaticaya and other tribes and the military force occurred. This is when the home tree was also taken
down which forced the people of Omaticaya to

Essay about History Still Matters Questions
1.) Moyers compares the study of history to the view in the rearview mirror. In what ways is this quote
an apt comparison?
I don t know how to drive, but I ve heard that your rearview mirror is extremely important, as is
history. It s like looking behind you, or that phrase, How do you know where you re going, if you don
t know where you ve been? History can be boring, but generally when it s boring, it s probably being
told wrong. People and stories are interesting and they make up who we are, and we need them. If we
toss out that mirror (our history), we re likely to back up into something nasty or get rear ended. The
moral is, if we know our history we can avoid making some large mistakes, because we ll be able to
see a little ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Do you think he s correct? Explain.
Moyers suggests that as Americans, we consider ourselves so advanced and the world has changed so
much in our eyes, that we consider history to be inapplicable to ourselves. I think he s correct in
saying that that is how many Americans think. Our society is very in the now , with Twitter, and FB
Status updates, Instagram, and What s Trending Now?, we re seeking as a whole to be seen NOW, not
yesterday. I wish that people weren t like this, but being a capitalist society, people should have seen it
coming. We care mostly about ourselves now, so why should we listen to what someone else did a
long time ago?
5.) Do you think we can learn from the past, or have our circumstances changed so dramatically that
the past is irrelevant? Explain your position.
I think the past will always be extremely relevant. Life is full of billions of possibilities and it s hard to
make choices sometimes, by knowing even a little bit about the past, you re much more likely to end
up where you want to be. You can draw on situations in the past to help you make decisions about
situations in the present. Yes, there are a lot of things that are extremely different now, but there have
always been times in history where things had just become extremely different. When fire was
discovered, when soap was invented, when electricity was discovered, when the telephone was
invented, indoor plumbing, cars, computers, theory of

Similarities And Differences In Ancient Greece
In this essay two Ancient Greek city states (polies) will be compared and contrasted showing how
despite their differences, they both rose to become predominating powers. Ancient Greece consisted of
many small city states, two of which were Athens and Sparta. Athens was considered the center of fine
arts, music, and educational opportunities. Sparta was known for its outstanding military strength and
tactical abilities at war. Life for a Spartiate was comprised of constant training and conditioning for
war, while an Athenian citizen would spend much of their day pursuing what they wished. Although
these two city states were substantially different, they both rose to become the two most predominant
powers in Ancient Greece.
There were several advantages and disadvantages to each of these two polies. Their societal structures
were relatively similar, and their governments were exact opposites. Athens was a very artistic and
philosophical city state while Spartan culture revolved more around the training of men for war and
stability of the government. Spartans valued organization and stability, while Athenians comparatively
valued freedom of choice. There were also huge gender biases between the two polies, and through all
of this, traditions and beliefs have been passed down to our generations today, helping to shape the
world we live in.
To begin with the simplest societal structure of these two poleis. Spartan society was divided into
three main classes. At the top was

The Root Of The Causes Of Autism
Autism is a developmental disorder that starts at the birth of the child, and be diagnosed
approximately 18 months of age. Autism is a disorder that affects the brain, and affects the individual
s ability to communicate, to reason, and interact with others. Whereas, it is a spectrum disorder, and
the degree that it affect the individual. Therefore, with the spectrum is so vast it is difficult to
comprehend the advancement of the disorder and possible combinations with other disabilities. The
root of the autism in children may come from the mother s exposure to pesticides, metals, flame
retardants, viruses, bacteria, medical procedures and pharmaceutical during the time of pregnancy

Oj Simpson Facts
It did not take long for the dead bodies to be discovered. Shortly after the clock struck midnight on
June 13, 1994, Nicole and Ron s bodies were found by police following a 911 call they had received
from a passerby ( He could run ). Chicago police examined OJ s hotel room after he had checked out,
finding a bloody towel and bedsheet, as well as a broken glass. OJ s attorney would go on to claim
that Simpson had broken the glass, thus cutting himself when he heard about Nicole s death ( He could
run ). Los Angeles police officers searched Simpson s mansion upon his return to LA and taking him
in for questioning. While investigating the house, police found tennis shoes and a bloody glove. The
officers also noticed a few stains on the driveway and traces of the victims types of blood at OJ s

articles of evidence were displayed and many testimonies were given, but there is one piece that seems
to stand out more than the rest. OJ tried on a pair of leather gloves, consisting of one glove that had
been found at Simpson s estate and another that had been discovered at the scene of the crime, on June

Student Athletes Vs Collegiate Sports
With the passing of another academic year, fans were able to enjoy yet another nail biting NCAA
Basketball Tournament and a highlight filled football season. Most would agree that the NCAA
provides competitive sport as popular as the professionals. In fact, its annual revenue makes that point
clear. Collegiate sports are a massive industry and a profitable source of income for many universities.
The problem is who is profiting from it Different media outlets, including the newspaper, television,
and Internet, have contributed to the rise in popularity of sports and its industry. Professional and

Beron and Alex R. Piquero (2016), student athletes with the lowest average grades disclosed they
concentrated more on their sport than academics and viewed themselves as athletes more than
students. The academic community (i.e. deans and university presidents) and the athletic community
(i.e. college coaches and athletic directors) have battled over eligibility requirements, the advising of
student athletes, and requirements for athletic scholarships. This incredible fascination with sports has
turned it into quasi religion for many. Those who are entertained and those who profit from sports
have internalized this fascination with sports and passed it on to the students of America. The logical
sequence of this fixation with sports continues from high schools to colleges, and then to professional
sports. The concern then is has athletics become a more compelling force than academics in American
high schools and especially universities. Is there an overemphasis placed on athletics in high schools
and mainly universities? According to Robert A. McCormick and Amy Christian McCormick (2006),
the NCAA has used the term student athlete to characterize athletes that are a part of its member
universities. As stated above, student athletes with the lowest average grades disclosed they
concentrated more on their sport than academics and viewed themselves as athletes more than students
(Beron Piquero, 2016). Are they really student athletes ? Is there more emphasis placed on being an
athlete than being a student? On one hand, it is viewed sports participation has a negative impact on
academics because sports participation is over emphasized and academic performance is under
emphasized. Conversely, a study conducted by Ralph B. McNeal, Jr. (1995), found positive effects
between sports and a lower likelihood of dropping out of high school. Another study conducted by
Andrew Yiannakis and Merrill J. Melnick (2001), found positive effects of sports

Implementing An Improved Management Process
Create an Innovation Being a part of a family business that has been running for a twenty years helped
me evaluate their overall performance. Some internal processes and strategies are apparent, but also
need improvement. After learning all the different methods to innovate in this course the decision to
find a specific area of improvement in the organization was easy to find. Furthermore, implementing
an improved management process will definitely improve the company s overall performance and
work efficiency.
Describe the problem your innovation targets. What is the scope of the problem and which
stakeholders, both within the organization and without, does it impact?
The problem about this innovation is it can create conflict within the employees because this will be a
major change to them. Change is difficult and when it comes to innovating in a business that has been
working the same way for twenty years it can become difficult. It is important to consider the scope of
the problem, is it too broad or is it nonrealistic. In this organization the stakeholders involved and that
will be affected are the employees, and the suppliers. This innovation entails for the stakeholder to
understand the importance of defining their roles, decision power, and commitment for the innovation
plan (Deschamps, 2013).

organization and all stakeholders involved? The plan to innovating is

The Open Window In Kate Chopin s Short Story Of An Hour
To begin with, Kate Chopin uses symbolism in a way that gives the readers multiple ways to interpret.
The symbol of the open window could be interpreted many ways but I took this as a symbol of her
newly found independence. She had just found out that her husband had died in the railroad disaster;
after the news was given to her from her sister and husbands friend she found herself up in her room
facing the open window. While in her room sitting by this open window she starts feel something new.
Chopin illustrates that Mrs. Mallard was feeling something new by noting that she felt it, creeping out
of the sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air (39). By
sitting near the open window, she starts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chopin uses the point of view of third person omniscient because Mrs. Mallard does not know
everything the reader does at first. One example would be in the beginning when she does not know
her husband is dead and only Josephine and Richard knows of that news. Another example would be
that the story continues after Mrs. Mallard had died from the heart disease. The point of view is
important because if it was written in any other form than the we, the readers would not have known
what Mrs. Mallard was feeling after she got the news or what the doctors had to say after she had died.
If we say that the story was written in Josephine point of view, we would have thought that Mrs.
Mallard was in her room drinking or making herself ill; Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door
you will make yourself ill. (40). Or if it was Mr. Mallards point of view we, the readers would not
have known that any of this had happened because he did not that the accident had happened; He had
been far from the scene of accident, and did not even know there had been one (41). Chopin had
written in this point of view so the readers could be involved in all of the characters

The Importance Of Social Disconnection And Alienation
Our society should be aware of social disconnection and alienation due to the increase of
technological advances. How do technological advances lead to disconnection and alienation? People
can feel disconnected from reality, from themselves, or from other people. They physically alienate
themselves willingly by withdrawing from a source that can be a cause of pain or discomfort; such as
bullying, disagreements, past relations, family or work issues.
Maria Furukawa states that Advancements, particularly in handheld devices, such as smartphones,
iPads, and smart watches, have made our lives more efficient by making everything we need
accessible at the tap of a screen or a swipe to the left. Essentially, technology has taken the hard work
of talking to someone in person, of physically reading a book and of using our minds to do some
mental math and replaced it with a device. I have noticed that technology, ironically, disconnects us
from living in the present moment. Even though we try our hardest to communicate what we mean
over text, there is still a possibility for miscommunication or misinterpretation of what was written. If
instead, a conversation was held in person, facial expressions, changes in tone, and hand gestures are
some ways that miscommunication can be avoided. (Furukawa 2017) People can create a virtual world
by using these devices with the increase of screen time and internet usage. They are subjected to
advertisements, unrealistic standards, online bullying and constant access to negative information. In
this virtual world, there are numerous sites for social networking. In this case, people do not need to
physically interact with one another and can espouse any persona to their present need.
Dwight G. Dean, in his article, explains that The concept of Alienation is considered here as having
three major components: Powerlessness, Normlessness, and Social Isolation. (Dean 1961) Humans by
nature need interaction with other humans. It s a biological necessity. Hawkley states that As a social
species, humans rely on a safe, secure social surround to survive and thrive. Perceptions of social
isolation, or loneliness, increase vigilance for threat and heighten feelings of vulnerability

it s about an African American woman traveling back in time to save her ancestor, a white slave

God s gift. It is the monitor civilizations of arts and sciences . With technology, they can get things
done precisely, efficiently and fast. Wireless communication devices keep you connected wherever

comes to advancement of technology. And one of these that caught the proponent s attention is the

Cursive Writing Is The Importance Of Writing
As the two positions posed above have stated, it is a matter of grave importance that school and its
systems should contemplate the importance of cursive handwriting and whether it should remain or be
forsaken as some method of unwarranted use. Whereas both sides have their own opinions, one must
consult each and formulate his or her own thought on the matter. For example, though cursive
handwriting may be found to be lacking use in today s technologically fueled society, the benefits of
cursive writing in a variety of situations over typing cannot be underestimated. Such fields and the
situations concern the modern problems of identity, beneficiary subjects, and strength versus ease.
First and foremost, in a society where information is of the utmost importance and is found to be
obtained through some method of identity, one must consult what typing, thumbprints, and digital
passwords have over the contained chaos that is each and every person s unique, handwritten
signature. Whereas the second article opposing the continuation of cursive handwriting said that A
survey was given to handwriting teachers at a 2012 conference hosted by a lead researcher. The survey
revealed that only 37% of the teachers wrote in cursive. If handwriting teachers don t value cursive,
then why should anyone? , the author of the article forgot to include several important factors that
come to mind. The conference itself was not stated, nor was the amount of attendees, let alone the
amount that were teachers. Such a fact if one will think can be easily misconstrued from a formulated
lie. Of course, another reason could be that the ones that surveyed the teachers selected a small, biased
margin that would otherwise have resulted in contradictory evidence, i.e. useless data. Secondly, It
used to be that people s written name was an important part of their identity attempts to convey the
idea that one does not use his or her or their signature anymore. However, A signature is no longer
needed for many legal documents and receipts would be found incorrect. In the personal experience of
the author, every receipt for an order or registration for school, testing or not, has needed a

The Role Played by the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) in the East Timorese Efforts
to Achieve Independence
Introduction
East Timor (also called Timor Leste in Portuguese) is a country in Southeast Asia. It was a Portuguese
colony from the 16th century up until Portugal s decolonisation in 1975. In 1976 Timor Leste was
invaded by Indonesia who sought to expand its territory. This lead to the development of long guerrilla
warfare between the East Timorese who wanted their independence and the Indonesian troops who
suppressed the East Timorese efforts to independence. This struggle for independence lasted from
1976 until 1999. This led to the deaths of a third of the East Timorese population due to conflict

INTERFRET withdrew from Timor Leste in February 2000. UNTAET oversaw the democratic
elections held in 2001 and East Timorese independence was official in May 2002.
This topic is of significance because the humanitarian intervention in Timor Leste is regarded as a
prime example of how the use of force by the international community can lead to peace in a country.
In the Timor Leste case the theory of humanitarian intervention is put into practice. As the
peacekeeping forces helped the self determination efforts by the East Timorese by rapidly helping to
quell the violence, and control the civil unrest after the referendum. The humanitarian intervention in
Timor Leste under the aegis of Australia is a worthy case study of a multinational intervention. It is of
great relevance for students of international relations to assess the reasons for the intervention and also
it is important to explore its short and long term effects.
The main research question of this paper is to what extent the International Force for East Timor
(INTERFET) play a role in the East Timorese efforts to achieve independence. This will be explained
in the following chapters. The first chapter examines the circumstances that led to the Humanitarian
Intervention in Timor Leste. Before examining the circumstances that led to intervention in Timor
Leste, in this chapter the concept of

Life in the Feudal System During Medievel Times
All of the villages had one large farm where all villagers shared as grazing land for their animals. The
village also included church land (glebe), the lords hunting forest, and meadows where hay was

A farmer usually had two crops; a spring and an autumn crop. The spring usually consisting of barley,
vetches, oats, peas and beans, while fall was usually just wheat and rye. Each seed was used in way.
The rye and wheat, besides being sold for cash, was used for bread. The barley was used for beer and
the oats and hay were fed to the livestock. Different crops are planted on the same field in different

During the 11th Century, the lord started recruiting middle class freeman with actual skills. These men
also had a certain standard of quality equipment.
Around 90% of Medieval Europeans were peasants who worked as farmers. Peasants lived in village
of about 100 to 300 people, in a one of two roomed hut located around the village green or along the
villages dirt road. Village were usually near a river or stream because it then provided them with a
source of fresh water and fish. The villages and the land around them were called manors. Manors
varied in size from about 900 to 3000 hectares and were owned by a lord. The lord had his own
farming area which was around one third of the total area, this was known as demesne. The villagers
then farmed the rest of the land.
Women in Medieval times were totally controlled by the males of their family. They were expected to
obey their father, brothers or any other male members. If a woman was to be disobedient, she would
be beaten and was seen as a crime against religion. It was important for women to learn how to use
weapons so they could protect their homes when the men of the family were away. Some medieval
women held other jobs. There were women blacksmiths, merchants and apothecaries. Others were
midwives, workers in the fields, or spent their time writing, playing musical instruments, dancing or
painting.

insight on how popular press articles may misinterpret a study and spread false information to the
public.
Summary: Tech Times Magazine
In the article the author, James Maynard, tried to interpret a study published by Biological Psychiatry
Journal on Obese type Gut Microbiota Induce Neurobehavioral Changes in the Absence of Obesity.
Maynard found that mice from the study were fed different types of foods: one high in fat and the
other in normal chow diet. The rats that were fed the fat enriched diet showed some symptoms of
anxiety and forgetfulness, while the other rats were seemingly okay. In these findings, Maynard makes
and Association claim that High fat diets can cause Depression and other psychological risks. The
article does not advocate for a change in diet, but does not give any reference to other possible causes
to the lab results.

The Role Of The Dublin Lockout Of 1913
James Larkin, the leader of the Irish Trade Union and the founder of the Irish Transport and General
Workers Union once said The employers cannot carry on industry nor accumulate profits if they have
not got the good will of the workers or their acquiescence in carrying on such industry. In 1911, over
300,000 people lived in Dublin. The unemployment rates were high and the average labourers wage
was around one pound a week, and that was only if they had a full week of work. Living conditions
were equally as inadequate as the working wages. Lydia Carroll and Enda Leaney found in a housing
enquiry that 87,305 people lived in poverty, almost a third of Dublin s population. 80% of families
lived in one room dwellings. According to the Public Health Report of 1913, 8,639 deaths were
recorded, 1,444 were from tuberculosis and 4,642 were from nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and
digestive diseases such as diarrhoea and pneumonia due to inadequate sanitary and nutrition.(Devine,
pg 3 4) These conditions sparked many protests as workers became desperate. James Larkin became a
renowned figure of the movement toward a better Ireland for the labourers. This essay will discuss the
comparison of leadership between the employers and the employed in Ireland during the Dublin
Lockout of 1913. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Prestigious Life of Edward Angle
During the years of 1855 through 1930, Edward Hartley, the mind behind orthodontics we know
today, was documented by those around him. Picking up all of his achievements, faults, techniques,
anything there was needed to know about him. A farm boy with an idea that would change lives and
the way things were. Angle devoted his life designing, defining and refining orthodontic techniques
that are still used to the present day. Would you want your teeth to be realigned in the 1850 s? Who
would go for a mouth full of metal and in some cases a metal head piece? Ask the same question for
today s society; everyone. The study of orthodontics has changed the lives of many people today and
is a highly preferred privilege we have today.
Over four million people in the U.S. wear braces, and 25 percent of these individuals are adults. If you
have a misaligned jaw or out of place teeth, be sure to ask your dentist if braces are right for you. (A

effect on symbolic play.
Gillian Stanley and Mary Konstantareas (2006) researched children with Autism Spectrum Disorder,
or ASD. The files they observed were of 131 children who were diagnosed with Autism. 1992.
However, 29 files were excluded due to testing complications. The writers state that the gender ratio
was also 1 girl for every 6 boys, or 15 girls and 86 boys. The study took place between March, 1982
and January. The participants ranged from 24 to 216 months of age (Stanley Konstantarea 2006).
According to Gillian Stanley and Mary Konstantarea (2006), their study used the Lowe and Costello

used because of its nonverbal administration. This made the test the most appropriate test to use on the
participants. To measure the different degrees of Autism, Gillian Stanley

Executive Summary
The operations management problem that our group chosen to discuss about occurs at a small, family
owned restaurant business called Good Greek Grill. Known best for their tasty greek food, the
company s primary problem is inventory management; trying to determine the order quantities and the
method of lot sizing and when to order so the company doesn t waste items with short life such as the
dairy products that uses like yogurt and milk. In the past the store has had been throwing away large
quantities of dairy products due to lack of forecasting the demand for dairy products as well as weak
inventory planning methods from unqualified employees. As a result, Good Greek Grill (G3) asked
our group to help them solve the problem since after getting a SOM class we are able to determine
methods towards solutions of Operational Management problems. The solution can be found by
getting to know what is the current reorder point and order quantity by using the EOQ (Economic

The Moon and Tides Observation Essay
An observation of the Moon was conducted from Friday, November 8, 2013 to Thursday, November
14, 2013. The study of the Moon during this period occurred consistently between the hours of 8 and 9
p.m. EST within the Northern Hemisphere at 37.3346° N, 79.5228° W (Bedford, V.A.). The Moon was
noted to be illuminated on the right side and had a dark shadow on the left side indicating a waxing
phase. The light region grew over the surface of the Moon with each subsequent night. The first night

grown to cover more of the Moon as it continued through its waxing crescent phase. On November

The new moon is the first phase of the lunar cycle. It occurs when the Moon and Sun are lined up on
the same side of the Earth so that the moon is not visible from Earth. Next, the waxing crescent moon
phase is displayed whereby the Moon s surface is less than half lit up. The word waxing means that
the light side of the Moon is moving towards the full moon phase. A person viewing the Moon from
the Northern Hemisphere will see a waxing moon if any portion of the left side of the Moon is dark
and the right side is illuminated. If the Moon is observed on consecutive nights during the waxing
phase, they will notice that the light section of the Moon is actually growing during this phase. The
next phase is the first quarter moon, which is often referred to as a half moon because half of the
Moon, the right side, is illuminated. The phrase first quarter is not used to describe the shape of the
Moon but is used to express that the Moon has completed a quarter of its orbit around the earth. At this
point, the Sun and Moon are at a 90 degree angle in relation to the earth. Next in the moon cycle is the
waxing gibbous which is characterized by more than half of the Moon being illuminated and the left
portion of the Moon displaying a smaller shadow area.
The full moon follows the waxing gibbous phase and is the easiest phase to recognize because the
moon is at its fullest illumination in the night

The Role Of Technology In Education
Technologies role
We re living in a country that is called a technologically civilized society. The use of the internet has
not changed the way that we think. However, it is making unique contributions in classrooms by
providing us with immediate and convenient access to an extraordinary amount of ideas and
information. In the world that we currently live in, technology is a very vital factor . Today most
people are more familiar with the technically advanced gadget that they carry in their backpack, or
their pocket. Every other day a new software device is being brought into the marketplace, which
helps improve our knowledge in and out of school. One of the advantages that the internet provides
students with, is being able to access all sorts of books that are available at any time. Despite the fact
that technology plays a positive role in making our school lives much easier, it also has a negative
effect. The internet seems to be impairing our ability to focus and to think deeply on any subject. The
more technology continues to grow, the more improvement it provides in an education level for
certain students; while for others it has a very different effect in the way we read and take in
information. In this paper, I will be discussing both pros and cons of the way technology is used in and
out of our schools today.
To begin with, the continuing advances in the technological world, students are

Spinal Cord Injury ( Sci )
Spinal cord injury (SCI) can be dated back to the Egyptains, who described it as an ailment not to be
treated (Sarhan, Saif, Saif, 2012 p .319). SCI victims had no hope for a normalized future and were
confined to wheelchairs and experienced poor survival rates because of the demands of care.
Advancements in emergency care and rehabilitation practices increase neurological function to the
spine which has increased the SCI victim s changes of survival and return to normal locomotion. The
spinal column can be divided into 31 segments and comprise seven cervical, twelve thoracic, five
lumbar and five sacral vertebral segments which protect the spinal cord (Sarhan, et al. p. 319 320).
The nerves of the spinal column relay biological information to and from the brain by ascending and
descending tracts. A SCI occurs when acute trauma is generated to the spinal cord. Significant
pathology and pathophysiology damage blocks communication between the brain and the rest of the
body. A person s motor skills, autonomic functions, and sensations are affected by the initial injury.
The higher the injury occurs on the spinal column, the more dysfunctional the person may become.
The primary injury determines a given patient s neurologic grade on admission and thereby is the
strongest prognostic indicator (Dumont, Okonkwo, Verma, Hurlbert, Boulos, Ellegala, Dumont, 2001
p. 254). Secondary injuries can occur from vascular, cellular, and/or biochemical changes at the injury
site.

Pulp Fiction s Bathroom Fixation

English 015 Section 027

Pulp Fiction s Bathroom Fixation Although most would relate bathrooms to places of grime and filth,
the director of Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino, portrays them as sacred symbols that relate to moral
dilemmas held within both his movie s characters and its audience. Featuring bathrooms in films has
only recently become acceptable, with the first showing occurring in 1960 within the film Psycho.
Critics argued that toilets are the last things audiences would like to see at the movie theatre, but this
controversy inspired even more features of latrines in later cinematography. For instance, within one
of Quentin Tarantino s most popular and critically acclaimed films, Pulp Fiction, he not only includes
the usage of the bathroom, but features the specific kind of room multiple times throughout the film.
However, the frequent portrayal of these small, dirty rooms was no accident and instead served as a
symbolic place of recollection of one s morals and ethics. Throughout the movie, characters are seen
within bathrooms on multiple occasions. More importantly to note, however, is what the characters do
while they are within them. And no, I am not referring to that activity, so get your mind out of the
gutter. Every time a character finds himself within a bathroom, he is always questioning his actions or
what he should do next. A moral dilemma is always occurring within the character s mind within a
restroom.

A Push for Safer Crosswalks for RACC Students and Faculty...
In this modern day and age many drivers and pedestrians alike become easily distracted by: cell
phones, I Pods, navigation systems, as well as many other distractions. These distractions can make it
quite dangerous to even cross the street. It is quite shocking how worn and faded some of the
crosswalks at RACC have become. Even without the distractions the crosswalks are rather difficult to
see and be able to stop if a pedestrian steps into it. The crosswalks at RACC connect the main campus
with the parking lots, as well as other buildings, and classes just off campus. Having a student
population of almost 5,000 undergraduate students in addition to its full faculty and staff, a large
majority of these people have no choice but to park ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore while they are distracted and driving their focus must alternate between whatever other task
is at hand and driving. This draws their attention away from the road, which can potentially lead to an
accident. A crosswalk is generally designed to provide a safe path for pedestrians to cross by marking
the designated path that people can cross and in which motorist should be able to see. Should is the
keyword, because as the paint fades, chips, and wears from traffic; the path becomes harder for
motorist to see. The consequence of this is a driver will be less aware that someone may step into the
road trying to cross at these points. Laws and legislation are beginning to crack down on these drivers
but the roads are still a dangerous place for a person to be.
There are a multitude of options to increase the safety at cross walks. A pilot program in Virginia,
which is based off of similarly designed programs oversea, uses zigzagged lines painted on the road at
dangerous crossings ( Woodward, 2009). The idea is that the lines will draw a motorist s attention to
the road, the upcoming crosswalk, and they become aware of the potential for pedestrians to be
crossing. Placing a crossing guard at each crosswalk could serve the dual

from his home in Santa Clara Valley in California and forced to join various dogsled teams being led

being a domesticated dog to a wild dog, learning how unforgiving and cruel the world is. After being

How Nikola Tesla Changed America

51VAPE: THE BEAST IN THE EAST (Revision July 17, 2015) Before Hip Hop became the

Pioneers like DJ Kool Herc and Coke La Rock laid down the foundations, and then crews like

The American people have quite the issue on their hands. What is the problem? Their seemingly
second natured need to polarize themselves on so many issues, like militarization, health care, civil
rights, or something as simple as to whether coffee or tea is better (which obviously the answer is
coffee). Why does this happen? Is it the attempt to make the world simpler by putting it a seemingly
black and white situation? Or the urge to feel secure in beliefs, leading to them pushing themselves
into more and more extreme beliefs? Whatever the cause, it is slowly leading America seemingly
closer and closer to the next civil war, and to an increased turmoil in its people, leaving no one

The Terrestrial And Aquatic Intelligence Of Linda Hogan Essay
In his article The Terrestrial and Aquatic Intelligence of Linda Hogan (1999), Donelle N. Dreese
stresses that water (is) a recurring image for physical and psychological healing in a contemporary
world of sexism, drought, violence, and hunger. (Dreese 1999: 8) The four writers studied in this
thesis use an ecofeminist activism that brings together women and water imagery to expose male
exploitation of women and nature on an aquatic terrain. (Dreese 2002: 73) However, the researcher s
analysis of oppression and exploitation focuses not only on the mutual oppression of women and
elements of nature (here water) but on how one oppressive system is interrelated with all forms of
oppression as well, whether these forms are based on gender (women), natural elements (water), race
(American Indians), or on ethnicity and cultural minority (Nubians). The interrelatedness of
oppressive systems is explained in Huey li Li quotation of what Sheila Collins states that racism,
sexism, class exploitation, and ecological destruction are four interlocking pillars upon which the
structure of patriarchy rests. (Li 289) In addition, Karen J. Warren asserts, Andy Smith quotes, that
because all feminists do or must oppose the logic of domination which keeps oppressive conceptual
frameworks in place, all feminists must also oppose any isms of domination that are maintained and
justified by that logic of domination. (Smith 21) To support the notion of the interrelatedness of

  • 2. Examples Of Imperialism In The Movie Avatar The following review will be about a movie named Avatar. Avatar dates back to 2009 and was directed by James Cameron. The greediness of those in power will always results in the suffering of those lacks power. This statement refers to the greediness that was depicted in the movie by the Resources Development Administrators (RDA), which led to a forceful relocation of the Na Vi people. The following essay will include the discussion of three anthropological themes that were displayed. The first theme is the power of knowledge. Here I will discuss how knowledge was used against the NA Vi people. The second theme is the notion of imperialism. The colonization of the Pandora will be discussed under imperialism. The third theme is the notion of ethics. Under ethics I will discuss the three main ethical principles that should be followed by every ethnographer. ANTHROPOLOGICAL THEMES ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Avatar displays a solid anti imperialism message. Imperialism occurs when a particular country utilises their political and military powers to gain control over other areas of the world. According to Alcock and Young, 1974 there are five categories of imperialism which are economic, cultural, political, military, and communication. However, the movie Avatar exhibits two kinds of imperialism which is military and economic imperialism. The Na Vi people are considered to be poor indigenous people, while the RDA are technologically literate and rich. The RDA forcefully took over the Pandora because they wanted to build a Unobtanium. A Unobtanium is a room temperature for energy. The evidence of imperialism from the movie is displayed when the military force took down the tree of voices. It is also displayed at the end of the movie where the battle between the people of Omaticaya and other tribes and the military force occurred. This is when the home tree was also taken down which forced the people of Omaticaya to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay about History Still Matters Questions 1.) Moyers compares the study of history to the view in the rearview mirror. In what ways is this quote an apt comparison? I don t know how to drive, but I ve heard that your rearview mirror is extremely important, as is history. It s like looking behind you, or that phrase, How do you know where you re going, if you don t know where you ve been? History can be boring, but generally when it s boring, it s probably being told wrong. People and stories are interesting and they make up who we are, and we need them. If we toss out that mirror (our history), we re likely to back up into something nasty or get rear ended. The moral is, if we know our history we can avoid making some large mistakes, because we ll be able to see a little ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Do you think he s correct? Explain. Moyers suggests that as Americans, we consider ourselves so advanced and the world has changed so much in our eyes, that we consider history to be inapplicable to ourselves. I think he s correct in saying that that is how many Americans think. Our society is very in the now , with Twitter, and FB Status updates, Instagram, and What s Trending Now?, we re seeking as a whole to be seen NOW, not yesterday. I wish that people weren t like this, but being a capitalist society, people should have seen it coming. We care mostly about ourselves now, so why should we listen to what someone else did a long time ago? 5.) Do you think we can learn from the past, or have our circumstances changed so dramatically that the past is irrelevant? Explain your position. I think the past will always be extremely relevant. Life is full of billions of possibilities and it s hard to make choices sometimes, by knowing even a little bit about the past, you re much more likely to end up where you want to be. You can draw on situations in the past to help you make decisions about situations in the present. Yes, there are a lot of things that are extremely different now, but there have always been times in history where things had just become extremely different. When fire was discovered, when soap was invented, when electricity was discovered, when the telephone was invented, indoor plumbing, cars, computers, theory of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Similarities And Differences In Ancient Greece In this essay two Ancient Greek city states (polies) will be compared and contrasted showing how despite their differences, they both rose to become predominating powers. Ancient Greece consisted of many small city states, two of which were Athens and Sparta. Athens was considered the center of fine arts, music, and educational opportunities. Sparta was known for its outstanding military strength and tactical abilities at war. Life for a Spartiate was comprised of constant training and conditioning for war, while an Athenian citizen would spend much of their day pursuing what they wished. Although these two city states were substantially different, they both rose to become the two most predominant powers in Ancient Greece. There were several advantages and disadvantages to each of these two polies. Their societal structures were relatively similar, and their governments were exact opposites. Athens was a very artistic and philosophical city state while Spartan culture revolved more around the training of men for war and stability of the government. Spartans valued organization and stability, while Athenians comparatively valued freedom of choice. There were also huge gender biases between the two polies, and through all of this, traditions and beliefs have been passed down to our generations today, helping to shape the world we live in. To begin with the simplest societal structure of these two poleis. Spartan society was divided into three main classes. At the top was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Student Athletes Vs Collegiate Sports With the passing of another academic year, fans were able to enjoy yet another nail biting NCAA Basketball Tournament and a highlight filled football season. Most would agree that the NCAA provides competitive sport as popular as the professionals. In fact, its annual revenue makes that point clear. Collegiate sports are a massive industry and a profitable source of income for many universities. The problem is who is profiting from it Different media outlets, including the newspaper, television, and Internet, have contributed to the rise in popularity of sports and its industry. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beron and Alex R. Piquero (2016), student athletes with the lowest average grades disclosed they concentrated more on their sport than academics and viewed themselves as athletes more than students. The academic community (i.e. deans and university presidents) and the athletic community (i.e. college coaches and athletic directors) have battled over eligibility requirements, the advising of student athletes, and requirements for athletic scholarships. This incredible fascination with sports has turned it into quasi religion for many. Those who are entertained and those who profit from sports have internalized this fascination with sports and passed it on to the students of America. The logical sequence of this fixation with sports continues from high schools to colleges, and then to professional sports. The concern then is has athletics become a more compelling force than academics in American high schools and especially universities. Is there an overemphasis placed on athletics in high schools and mainly universities? According to Robert A. McCormick and Amy Christian McCormick (2006), the NCAA has used the term student athlete to characterize athletes that are a part of its member universities. As stated above, student athletes with the lowest average grades disclosed they concentrated more on their sport than academics and viewed themselves as athletes more than students (Beron Piquero, 2016). Are they really student athletes ? Is there more emphasis placed on being an athlete than being a student? On one hand, it is viewed sports participation has a negative impact on academics because sports participation is over emphasized and academic performance is under emphasized. Conversely, a study conducted by Ralph B. McNeal, Jr. (1995), found positive effects between sports and a lower likelihood of dropping out of high school. Another study conducted by Andrew Yiannakis and Merrill J. Melnick (2001), found positive effects of sports ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some internal processes and strategies are apparent, but also need improvement. After learning all the different methods to innovate in this course the decision to find a specific area of improvement in the organization was easy to find. Furthermore, implementing an improved management process will definitely improve the company s overall performance and work efficiency. Describe the problem your innovation targets. What is the scope of the problem and which stakeholders, both within the organization and without, does it impact? The problem about this innovation is it can create conflict within the employees because this will be a major change to them. Change is difficult and when it comes to innovating in a business that has been working the same way for twenty years it can become difficult. It is important to consider the scope of the problem, is it too broad or is it nonrealistic. In this organization the stakeholders involved and that will be affected are the employees, and the suppliers. This innovation entails for the stakeholder to understand the importance of defining their roles, decision power, and commitment for the innovation plan (Deschamps, 2013). • 10. The Open Window In Kate Chopin s Short Story Of An Hour To begin with, Kate Chopin uses symbolism in a way that gives the readers multiple ways to interpret. The symbol of the open window could be interpreted many ways but I took this as a symbol of her newly found independence. She had just found out that her husband had died in the railroad disaster; after the news was given to her from her sister and husbands friend she found herself up in her room facing the open window. While in her room sitting by this open window she starts feel something new. Chopin illustrates that Mrs. Mallard was feeling something new by noting that she felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air (39). By sitting near the open window, she starts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chopin uses the point of view of third person omniscient because Mrs. Mallard does not know everything the reader does at first. One example would be in the beginning when she does not know her husband is dead and only Josephine and Richard knows of that news. Another example would be that the story continues after Mrs. Mallard had died from the heart disease. The point of view is important because if it was written in any other form than the we, the readers would not have known what Mrs. Mallard was feeling after she got the news or what the doctors had to say after she had died. If we say that the story was written in Josephine point of view, we would have thought that Mrs. Mallard was in her room drinking or making herself ill; Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door you will make yourself ill. (40). Or if it was Mr. Mallards point of view we, the readers would not have known that any of this had happened because he did not that the accident had happened; He had been far from the scene of accident, and did not even know there had been one (41). • 11. The Importance Of Social Disconnection And Alienation Our society should be aware of social disconnection and alienation due to the increase of technological advances. How do technological advances lead to disconnection and alienation? People can feel disconnected from reality, from themselves, or from other people. They physically alienate themselves willingly by withdrawing from a source that can be a cause of pain or discomfort; such as bullying, disagreements, past relations, family or work issues. Maria Furukawa states that Advancements, particularly in handheld devices, such as smartphones, iPads, and smart watches, have made our lives more efficient by making everything we need accessible at the tap of a screen or a swipe to the left. Essentially, technology has taken the hard work of talking to someone in person, of physically reading a book and of using our minds to do some mental math and replaced it with a device. I have noticed that technology, ironically, disconnects us from living in the present moment. Even though we try our hardest to communicate what we mean over text, there is still a possibility for miscommunication or misinterpretation of what was written. If instead, a conversation was held in person, facial expressions, changes in tone, and hand gestures are some ways that miscommunication can be avoided. (Furukawa 2017) People can create a virtual world by using these devices with the increase of screen time and internet usage. They are subjected to advertisements, unrealistic standards, online bullying and constant access to negative information. In this virtual world, there are numerous sites for social networking. In this case, people do not need to physically interact with one another and can espouse any persona to their present need. Dwight G. Dean, in his article, explains that The concept of Alienation is considered here as having three major components: Powerlessness, Normlessness, and Social Isolation. (Dean 1961) Humans by nature need interaction with other humans. It s a biological necessity. Hawkley states that As a social species, humans rely on a safe, secure social surround to survive and thrive. • 16. Cursive Writing Is The Importance Of Writing As the two positions posed above have stated, it is a matter of grave importance that school and its systems should contemplate the importance of cursive handwriting and whether it should remain or be forsaken as some method of unwarranted use. Whereas both sides have their own opinions, one must consult each and formulate his or her own thought on the matter. For example, though cursive handwriting may be found to be lacking use in today s technologically fueled society, the benefits of cursive writing in a variety of situations over typing cannot be underestimated. Such fields and the situations concern the modern problems of identity, beneficiary subjects, and strength versus ease. First and foremost, in a society where information is of the utmost importance and is found to be obtained through some method of identity, one must consult what typing, thumbprints, and digital passwords have over the contained chaos that is each and every person s unique, handwritten signature. Whereas the second article opposing the continuation of cursive handwriting said that A survey was given to handwriting teachers at a 2012 conference hosted by a lead researcher. The survey revealed that only 37% of the teachers wrote in cursive. If handwriting teachers don t value cursive, then why should anyone? , the author of the article forgot to include several important factors that come to mind. The conference itself was not stated, nor was the amount of attendees, let alone the amount that were teachers. Such a fact if one will think can be easily misconstrued from a formulated lie. Of course, another reason could be that the ones that surveyed the teachers selected a small, biased margin that would otherwise have resulted in contradictory evidence, i.e. useless data. Secondly, It used to be that people s written name was an important part of their identity attempts to convey the idea that one does not use his or her or their signature anymore. However, A signature is no longer needed for many legal documents and receipts would be found incorrect. In the personal experience of the author, every receipt for an order or registration for school, testing or not, has needed a handwritten signature to testify he is actually ... INTERFRET withdrew from Timor Leste in February 2000. UNTAET oversaw the democratic elections held in 2001 and East Timorese independence was official in May 2002. This topic is of significance because the humanitarian intervention in Timor Leste is regarded as a prime example of how the use of force by the international community can lead to peace in a country. In the Timor Leste case the theory of humanitarian intervention is put into practice. As the peacekeeping forces helped the self determination efforts by the East Timorese by rapidly helping to quell the violence, and control the civil unrest after the referendum. The humanitarian intervention in Timor Leste under the aegis of Australia is a worthy case study of a multinational intervention. It is of great relevance for students of international relations to assess the reasons for the intervention and also it is important to explore its short and long term effects. It occurs when the Moon and Sun are lined up on the same side of the Earth so that the moon is not visible from Earth. Next, the waxing crescent moon phase is displayed whereby the Moon s surface is less than half lit up. The word waxing means that the light side of the Moon is moving towards the full moon phase. A person viewing the Moon from the Northern Hemisphere will see a waxing moon if any portion of the left side of the Moon is dark and the right side is illuminated. If the Moon is observed on consecutive nights during the waxing phase, they will notice that the light section of the Moon is actually growing during this phase. The next phase is the first quarter moon, which is often referred to as a half moon because half of the Moon, the right side, is illuminated. SCI victims had no hope for a normalized future and were confined to wheelchairs and experienced poor survival rates because of the demands of care. Advancements in emergency care and rehabilitation practices increase neurological function to the spine which has increased the SCI victim s changes of survival and return to normal locomotion. The spinal column can be divided into 31 segments and comprise seven cervical, twelve thoracic, five lumbar and five sacral vertebral segments which protect the spinal cord (Sarhan, et al. p. 319 320). The nerves of the spinal column relay biological information to and from the brain by ascending and descending tracts. A SCI occurs when acute trauma is generated to the spinal cord. Significant pathology and pathophysiology damage blocks communication between the brain and the rest of the body. A person s motor skills, autonomic functions, and sensations are affected by the initial injury. The higher the injury occurs on the spinal column, the more dysfunctional the person may become. The primary injury determines a given patient s neurologic grade on admission and thereby is the strongest prognostic indicator (Dumont, Okonkwo, Verma, Hurlbert, Boulos, Ellegala, Dumont, 2001 p. 254). Secondary injuries can occur from vascular, cellular, and/or biochemical changes at the injury site. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Pulp Fiction s Bathroom Fixation Sean Blessington Mrs. Netzer English 015 Section 027 11 December 2015 Pulp Fiction s Bathroom Fixation Although most would relate bathrooms to places of grime and filth, the director of Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino, portrays them as sacred symbols that relate to moral dilemmas held within both his movie s characters and its audience. Featuring bathrooms in films has only recently become acceptable, with the first showing occurring in 1960 within the film Psycho. Critics argued that toilets are the last things audiences would like to see at the movie theatre, but this controversy inspired even more features of latrines in later cinematography. For instance, within one of Quentin Tarantino s most popular and critically acclaimed films, Pulp Fiction, he not only includes the usage of the bathroom, but features the specific kind of room multiple times throughout the film. However, the frequent portrayal of these small, dirty rooms was no accident and instead served as a symbolic place of recollection of one s morals and ethics. Throughout the movie, characters are seen within bathrooms on multiple occasions. More importantly to note, however, is what the characters do while they are within them. And no, I am not referring to that activity, so get your mind out of the gutter. Every time a character finds himself within a bathroom, he is always questioning his actions or what he should do next. A moral dilemma is always occurring within the character s mind within a restroom. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. A Push for Safer Crosswalks for RACC Students and Faculty... In this modern day and age many drivers and pedestrians alike become easily distracted by: cell phones, I Pods, navigation systems, as well as many other distractions. These distractions can make it quite dangerous to even cross the street. It is quite shocking how worn and faded some of the crosswalks at RACC have become. Even without the distractions the crosswalks are rather difficult to see and be able to stop if a pedestrian steps into it. The crosswalks at RACC connect the main campus with the parking lots, as well as other buildings, and classes just off campus. Having a student population of almost 5,000 undergraduate students in addition to its full faculty and staff, a large majority of these people have no choice but to park ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore while they are distracted and driving their focus must alternate between whatever other task is at hand and driving. This draws their attention away from the road, which can potentially lead to an accident. A crosswalk is generally designed to provide a safe path for pedestrians to cross by marking the designated path that people can cross and in which motorist should be able to see. Should is the keyword, because as the paint fades, chips, and wears from traffic; the path becomes harder for motorist to see. The consequence of this is a driver will be less aware that someone may step into the road trying to cross at these points. Laws and legislation are beginning to crack down on these drivers but the roads are still a dangerous place for a person to be. There are a multitude of options to increase the safety at cross walks. A pilot program in Virginia, which is based off of similarly designed programs oversea, uses zigzagged lines painted on the road at dangerous crossings ( Woodward, 2009). The idea is that the lines will draw a motorist s attention to the road, the upcoming crosswalk, and they become aware of the potential for pedestrians to be crossing. Placing a crossing guard at each crosswalk could serve the dual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not only is the portion of fish he is given is too small, he eats too daintily which leads to other dogs stealing his food. Buck starts eating more quickly but the amount of fish he gets is still too scanty. He was so hungry that he started to steal food from the men when they were not looking, a skill he picked up by watching one of the other dogs. In fact one day he steals an entire chunk of bacon and watches as another dog get punished for his crime. This first theft marked Buck as fit to survive in the hostile Northland environment. . . . It marked, further, the decay or going to pieces of his moral nature, a vain thing and a handicap in the ruthless struggle for existence. It was all well enough in the Southland, under the law of love and fellowship, to respect private property and personal feelings; but in the Northland, under the law of club and fang, whoso took such things into account. . . would fail to prosper. Later in his life his mind began to drift to the more absolutely senile region on the insanity scale, he told people that he could create a death ray, saying that he could fire a condensed amount of particles long distances to kill someone. He thought that humans should be selectively bred, eliminating the lesser of the species, granted that was a popular opinion at the time. The most insane obsession he had was with pigeons, he said he had fed thousands of pigeons over the years. He fell in love with one of the pigeons, saying I have been feeding pigeons, thousands of them for years. But there was one, a beautiful bird, pure white with light grey tips on its wings; that one was different. It was a female. I had only to wish and call her and she would come flying to me. Their seemingly second natured need to polarize themselves on so many issues, like militarization, health care, civil rights, or something as simple as to whether coffee or tea is better (which obviously the answer is coffee). Why does this happen? Is it the attempt to make the world simpler by putting it a seemingly black and white situation? Or the urge to feel secure in beliefs, leading to them pushing themselves into more and more extreme beliefs? Whatever the cause, it is slowly leading America seemingly closer and closer to the next civil war, and to an increased turmoil in its people, leaving no one unaffected or unbothered. • 36. The Terrestrial And Aquatic Intelligence Of Linda Hogan Essay In his article The Terrestrial and Aquatic Intelligence of Linda Hogan (1999), Donelle N. Dreese stresses that water (is) a recurring image for physical and psychological healing in a contemporary world of sexism, drought, violence, and hunger. (Dreese 1999: 8) The four writers studied in this thesis use an ecofeminist activism that brings together women and water imagery to expose male exploitation of women and nature on an aquatic terrain. (Dreese 2002: 73) However, the researcher s analysis of oppression and exploitation focuses not only on the mutual oppression of women and elements of nature (here water) but on how one oppressive system is interrelated with all forms of oppression as well, whether these forms are based on gender (women), natural elements (water), race (American Indians), or on ethnicity and cultural minority (Nubians). The interrelatedness of oppressive systems is explained in Huey li Li quotation of what Sheila Collins states that racism, sexism, class exploitation, and ecological destruction are four interlocking pillars upon which the structure of patriarchy rests. (Li 289) In addition, Karen J. Warren asserts, Andy Smith quotes, that because all feminists do or must oppose the logic of domination which keeps oppressive conceptual frameworks in place, all feminists must also oppose any isms of domination that are maintained and justified by that logic of domination.
