downtown Indianapolis Indiana, I had the opportunity to attend the Italian Culture
Festival. Organized each year by the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, this festival was
full of music, cultural food, and I was lucky enough to experience a traditional Italian
religious procession and Mass(Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2015). The festival
was packed with people from the city and from the Italian culture. I had never
experienced a festival such as the one held in Indianapolis. Being from the east
coast and not of the Italian culture, the festival was a refreshing yet, uncomfortable
experience at times. I observed a traditional dance, the tarantella and those around
the area all seemed to know most of the steps or the words to some of the songs in
the set they played. The locals tried to get me to dance along but, I could not keep
up with them on the fly. The tarantella is one of the most famous of Italian dances

While I was firstly reading The Freedom Writers Diary, by Erin Gruwell, I was
expecting the book to be tedious and humdrum. The story is set to happen in a
classroom Room 203 at Wilson High School, located in California; and as we all
know, high school is a place where we learn and communicate on a daily basis.
However, I was given a total shock and impressed after I fully comprehend the
context of this book. The book is formatted as a collection of diaries, written by
different students from the same self segregated class. Listening to Ms. Gruwell s
suggestion, all students record their struggles, joys, and daily experience in their
diaries.
When I was reading the book, one question kept revolving in my mind: I eagerly ...
What is one of the themes of this book? I guess the writer tries to point out many
existing stereotypes in life. While I was reading the book, I tried to find out some of
them. On page 254, the quote on my way... me discrimination could lead to
stereotypes, the theorem is that discrimination increases prejudice through the
reactions it provokes its victims. In the first entry, troubled students bred a higher rate
of troubles, and teachers can then use the troublesome circumstances to justify
continuing the discrimelaborates a general stereotype the teacher thinks Asians are
smart, while the Latino or the black could hardly get into the universities they like.
This is also a reason why teachers except for Ms. Gruwell believe troubled kids
don t have any potential to make a change: they don t even expect them to change
and thus do nothing about them. The stereotypes could also result from lots of
factors in society as well. According to my personal research and from a
psychological perspective, stereotypes have social, emotional and cognitive roots.
Socials roots include social inequalities, discrimination, and what is called in group

student who cannot learn normally as many others do was not treated equally by

Artwork with the principle of emphasis is my favorite. Whenever I look at
something and I can clearly see a focal point that grabs my attention, it makes me
want to continue examining it, looking at the background and bits and pieces that
weren t the first I noticed. The two pieces that I enjoyed most are The Old Violin
by William M. Harnett and The Virgin and Child by Giotto. I chose these to focus
on because I was instantly drawn to one or more aspects of each piece. Their
common principle was emphasis. In the first artwork, The Old Violin, my attention
was drawn to the center where the violin and sheet music is located. I first noticed
this because is it the brightest part of the piece. There is a lot of darkness
surrounding the violin, which helps it to become noticed. I felt like there was
another focal point in this image and that was the blue envelope in the bottom left

I have heard people discuss the many passions in their lives. Listening to them, I
have been puzzled. I simply do not have an abundant number of passions myself.
In fact, as I think about it there are really only two subjects of interest that I feel

which forced her to engage in physical defense and do everything in her power to

The short story, The House on Mango Street, is a story that is centered within a
particular neighborhood, which is evidently inhabited by middle to lower class folks.
Although the introduction of the story does not state a specific location, it is safe to
say that it is not the typical neighborhood where you would find rich white folks
living. For example, the house where the protagonists live is described as almost
collapsing due to brick damage; something that would not be an issue within a richer

their dream home would look like. That most likely gave them hope and made them

temporary, but the narrator insists that nothing will change any time soon. Being the

narrator makes it clear that they are nowhere close to what she envisions her life in
