Multiculturalism has played a significant role in Canada, since its establishment 40 years ago.
Much of Canadian society is reflective of different cultures from around the world making
multiculturalism a very relevant topic to Canadians. While it can be argued that the majority of
Canadians are in favor of multiculturalism, there are some who hold a different opinion. Though
some critics claim that multiculturalism promotes a form of hyphenated Canadianism that
exacerbates divisions in Canadian society based on such characteristics like ethnic, minority, or
immigrant status, the social advantages such as how multiculturalism is a source of ... Show more

Minority groups have served multiple different business sectors helping overall benefit our
economy. The paragraph will also divulge into the political benefits both multiculturalism and
immigrants provide to Canada. Canada sees high rates of political participation from foreign born
citizens due to the country s multiculturalist nature. Economically, Canada is fortunate to have a
high number of immigrants in its territory. Finally, the paper will conclude with the explanation of
alternatives to multiculturalism. These alternatives are typically considered negative which will
further illustrate why immigrants and a multicultural society is important to Canada.
Multiculturalism is a crucial aspect to Canada in which it diminishes the divisions in Canadian
society based on one s race, religion, and culture. Social advantages of multiculturalism in Canada
prove to be very beneficial to Canadian society. When discussing multiculturalism in regards to
its use and policies in Canada, it is important to first, give its definition as well as explain its
history. Multiculturalism relates to or is made up of several different cultures and is typically used
to as an adjective to describe a society (Merriam Webster). Multiculturalism is not just a fixed
concept or a simple idea; it is a multidimensional entity (Guo + Wong, 107). Multiculturalism can be
seen as a catch all term, which encompasses the fusion or interaction

Lizzie Borden Research Paper
The murder of Abby and Andrew Borden has been a mystery for over a century, but I believe I
know what happened. The brutal murder of Lizzie Borden s parents occured on August 4, 1892, it
was a normal day until those fateful hours. Many people believed that Lizzie is guilty, but I think
otherwise. I believe that Lizzie Bordenis innocent because She showed a lot of grief in personal
letters, she feared someone would kill her father, and Lizzie cared for her father and step mother
despite what people said about her. The evidence that will be provided will give fresh insight on
this topic.
Many people described Lizzie as stoic and emotionless, but she really wasn t. In personal letters
written by Lizzie and sent to her attorney, Lizzie shows a great deal of emotion. In source #2 it
states, the letters show a sensitive and grieving side of her. This expresses the way that Lizzie felt
about the murder of her parents. She was very sad, but the media never saw it, so she was
portrayed as to not have feelings. Lizzie might have seemed like an evil person, but she was
defindentally not. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe that there were many other people that wanted Andrew Borden dead. In Lizzie Borden s
testimony she said that they were many men that her father had not been friendly with for many
years. This illustrates how many other people might have murdered Lizzie s parents. Andrew
Borden wasn t liked by many because of his shady business deals. Lizzie Borden was simply in the

Third Man Setting
The Third Man The Third Man, directed by Carol Reed, takes place in post WWII Vienna. It is
an interesting thriller following a man by the name of Holly Martins. Holly is an out of work
writer that is invited to Vienna by his friend Harry Lime, who promised him a decent job upon
arrival. However, when Holly arrives at Harry s home, he finds out that his friend has died. As he
mourns his friend s passing, he begins to notice discrepancies in the stories surrounding his death,
particularly the suggestion of a third man at the scene of the accident. Holly investigates further,
leading him to the realization that Harry is in fact alive, and a peddler of altered drugs that are
killing sick adults and children. In the end, Holly agrees to assist the police in capturing Harry.
When Harry s lover, Anna Schmidt, interrupts the set up to trap him, he runs into the sewers where
he is eventually shot and killed. This film was successful due to its good setting, supporting
soundtrack, and profound message.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The city is divided into sectors controlled by four different nations: the English, Russians,
Americans, and French. The multiple authorities cause tension and a sense of confusion and fear.
This helps add to the questionable atmosphere as Holly is investigating his friend s supposed
murder. Another important part about the setting is the sewer tunnels that Harry uses to sneak
around while pretending to be dead. This tunnel system was hidden and more intricate than the
police or Holly knew, which mirrors Harry s situation. Holly is less familiar with the city and the
sewer system, much like he is less familiar with Harry s darker

Summary Of The Book The Notebook
Maddy MichielssenMr. Hyde English 2 Pre AP, Period 4 Tuesday, October 17, 2014 The
Notebook Nicholas Sparks SETTING The story of The Notebook begins in New Bern, a city
close to North Carolina s North coast, in Craven Country in 1932. The story then fast forwards
to the year 1946, still in the same city, New Bern, in the deep south of the Unite States. The story
ends in the modern era, today, in a nursing home called Creekside Extended Care Facility. PLOT
A man named Noah Calhoun retreated back to his hometown or New Bern, North Carolina at
the age of 31 from World War 2, which he was fighting in. He purchased an old, very sizable
estate for him to enhance. Subsequently, the newspaper decided to publish an article about his
accomplishment. When Allie Nelson, a girl who was enamored with Noah Calhoun when they
were juveniles, sees the article written about Noah, she knows she must go see him. Allie is
engaged to a man named Lon, but informs him she will just be leaving to go visit an antique
shop. Upon her arrival in New Bern, passion and vehemence surge the two. They spend a
generous amount of time outside and eating dinner catching up. Allie begins to conceive that Noah
had composed letters to her for years following their separation, yet her mother had secluded them
from her. Noah and Allie came from different households with different social statuses. Noah s
family was not nearly as wealthy as Allie s and Allie s mother, Anne, doesn t approve of them

Joseph Smith s Influence On Religion
Can you imagine taking care of 40 wives, being the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints, and fighting for his religious and civil rights? Joseph Smith, prophet and leader of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints, left an important legacy on religion and American History;
Smith restored the mormon church, became prophet of the Church of JesusChrist of Latter Day
Saints, and was murdered for his religious beliefs.
Smith as a young kid moved often and had a desire to find the true church but he knew that none
of the churches that were on Earth while he was young were the true church. Joseph Smith was
born in Sharon, Vermont and after a few years of moving some more he moved to New York. His

Mormons believe that without Smith the true church would not have been restored on the
Earth, if the church would have not been restored both religion and American history would
have been changed. American history would have been changed because Joseph Smith became
a candidate to be the president because mormon s were being denied their religious rights and
their civil rights. The one way Smith thought to give mormons their religious and civil rights
back was to become the president. Smith was also chosen by the Lord to be prophet, Smith
prayed in the woods in New York and asked to have the knowledge of which church was the true
church. Smith said, I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and
the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that
those professors were all corrupt; that: they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are
far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but
they deny the power thereof. The Lord answered him, many people pray to find the true church
but are not answered the way Smith was answered. Many people are answered in a dream or with
a small voice inside their head, also, Smith was answered immediately. Most prayers are not
answered immediately. Another part of Smith s legacy was being a polygamist. A polygamist is a

My Halo Research Paper
The Background During the summer before my junior year in high school I broke my neck
while on vacation in Outer Banks, NC. I spent the next three months in a cervical halo and three
more months after that in a standard C collar neck brace. My first month back at school was
spent in the halo which was interesting because not many people had ever seen one of these
braces and did not know the full extent of the hardware. It is a large plastic vest with sheep wool
lining the inside; making attending a school with predominantly outdoor hallways in the August
heat a very sweaty endeavor. From the vest shot four bars, two in front and two in back, that held
a horseshoe shaped bar (the halo) containing 4 screws. At the end of each screw was a fine point
that anchored into my skull and stabilized my head/neck. I could not take the halo off and had to
bathe, sleep, eat and everything else while wearing the device. Obviously wearing the halo
limited my choices of fashion and I resorted to wearing a tank top that I would slip on starting
with my feet because it was the most breathable option. It also looked weird if I wore any other
shirt. The Incident Normally this would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

suction cups holding my head in place. My principal was one of these people. This

very accommodating and said if she required it, that I would dress according to dress code though
it was difficult to dress that way. When my mom explained the situation to her she responded
similar to when she was with me. She suppressed the conflict issues by ignoring that she didn t

How Causation Is A Relation Between Events Or States Of...
1.(a) In Chisholm s paper, Human freedom and the self, Chisholm notes that causation is a
relation between events or states of affairs. For example, if the roof in my house cave in during
a hurricane this would be something that was caused by several other events such as the roof
being too weak, the rain pressure being too much for the roof to hold, excessive rain, etc. With
this term, Chisholm created two other narrower terms to specifically describe the different types
of causations. The first causation is transeunt which is when one event or state of affairs causes
other events or state of affairs. An example of Transeunt causation is if I threw a piece of paper
in a recycling bin my event would be recycling but the unknown event cause by this event would
be more oxygen in the world for people to breath in because that paper can be reused instead of
having to cut more trees down and cutting down our oxygen. The second type of causation would
be Immanent causation, which is when an agent (or person) causes an event or state of affairs.
An example of Immanent causation is me recycling the paper because I m the agent who
recycled the piece of paper, it wasn t done by another event. During the paper, Chisholm reflects
on two objections and takes his defense on both. The first one being simply a fact of (a) He could
have done otherwise means no more nor less than and (b) If he could have chosen to do otherwise,
he would have done otherwise. The second objective has a

New Right Pros And Cons
1980s 1990s Project I.The New Right was a conservative political movement that began during
the 1960s and 1970s. The New Right(NR) brought order to the previously disorganized white
suburban middle class. The presidential campaign of Barry Goldwater is often helmed as the
beginning in the rise of the NR. The NR and the Old Right(OR) differed in their views of foreign
policy. The OR believed that America should kept to itself and not get involved with other
countries this is strictly contrasted with the views held by the NR, who believed that American
had a duty to expand its influence to the rest of the world. The OR also had a primarily Democrat
following while the NR was almost entirely composed of Republicans. Reagan was a conservative

Contributions And Durkheim On Suicide
Г‰mile Durkheim on suicide.
Г‰mile Durkheim was a French sociologist, social psychologist and philosopher. Durkheim had an
important impact on the development of sociology. Durkheim s studies into suicide helped me in
understanding it as an issue in contemporary society. His most significant contribution was his work
defining suicide in social terms rather than individual terms. He was interested in how suicide might
be influenced more by social context and have a broader interpretation beyond the
individual.Durkheim wanted to prove that social situations, characteristics, activities, interactions
etc, influence and control individual and person behavior rather than the other way around.
Durkheim wrote a book called Le Suicide in 1897. This was a groundbreaking book in the field of
sociology. In this book Durkheim explores the differing suicide rates that are among society. In the
book Durkheim also distinguishes between four different types of suicide making is easier to
understand. He talks about the different rates of suicides and how they differ ... Show more content

occupation, religion, marital status etc. He wanted to show that suicide was to be thought of in
social terms not individual terms which it had been thought as. Durkheim was seen as one of the
Fathers of sociology and his work is greatly admired. Durkheim s research and hypotheses have
helped my understanding of suicide in social terms and has helped me in seeing the different types
of suicide and the different rates. His work has shown me not only look at suicide from an
individual point of view but to look at the individuals social setting and social influences around
them and see how those influences have impacted the

How To Write An Essay On Pizza
When I was little, the one and only food that I would come back to all the time was pizza. I loved
pizza because it could be made to fit the taste of anyone, including my family of picky eaters, and
it was the perfect food for anytime because it makes people feel happier. As I got older, I became
interested in cookingand one day decided that I should try to make the one food that was symbol
of my entire childhood. However, I did not have the time to do every single step to make a pizza,
nor did I have the skill it took to properly flip around the pizza dough to aerate it properly to
produce the iconic fluffy crust. I spent some time using my knowledge and skills in cooking until I
found how to make the easiest at home pizza recipe.
Making a pizza at home with this recipe shortens the entire process and gives you results that are
just as amazing. Before you start anything, you must gather all your basic ingredients, materials,

you may add your marinara sauce, cheese and other desired toppings. Once you have added all

The Literary Language Of Madness In Hamlet By William...
The literary language of madness drawn from Classical drama came to the English stage through
Old French and the literature of fools. The body and Mind are two major elements in Madness.
Through a series of scenes, the play displays the sorts of distinctions between all the characters
actions, natural and supernatural, distraction and feigned madness that were being demanded at
other cultural sites. It is my conclusion that Hamletuses a façade of insanity to hide his attempts to
kill Claudius and avenge his father s death. There are several different kinds of madness in Hamlet,
the three main are; female madness, feigned madness, and melancholy. Madness can be seen in two
characters specifically. Ophelia which represents female madness, and Hamlet which represents
feigned or false madness. Hamlet struggles with two things that drive through his Melancholic state:
Is the ghost speaking the truth? And did Claudius truly commit the crime of killing the former Kind
of Denmark? Hamlet s descent into madness starts when he is confronted with the news that his
Uncle Claudius will marry his mother, Gertrude, and become kind of Denmark. Claudius
manipulates Gertrude during his monologue at the end of the scene. We see how manipulative a
character he is, as he is trying to turn everybody against Hamlet that he can. Is it this manipulation
that caused Gertrude to marry him? Gertrude acknowledges her guilt, which could be a result of her
meeting with Hamlet in the bedroom. Like

The Pros And Cons Of Honey Bees
I am writing to inform you regarding a noteworthy issue that is concerning the world. One that
expects you to take immediate action and prevent the consequences that would ultimately allow the
bees to continue to suffer. Albeit little in size, honey bees and different pollinators are essential in
the creation of sustenance for people and numerous animals. Around 33% of our crops desire
pollination, that would diminish production without these crucial bees. (sos bees.org) Of the whole
U.S. farming industry, $29 billion originate from crops that require pollination. (cnn.com) Despite
their undeniable significance, honey beepopulaces have gotten little consideration and are
discovering it progressively hard to survive.
A recent report conducted by the Bee Informed Partnership demonstrated that beekeepers in the
United States lost 44 percent of their bumble bee settlements in a one year traverse. This denotes
the second year that summer misfortunes equal winter misfortunes of bees. This would resemble
that one day you came to the dinner table and had an average meal. Following one year, the
measure of the food you eat decreased by 44 percent. Consistently after that, a similar thing
happened and in the long run, you re left with nothing. Nobody questions why this happens and
there is not much change done to transform it.Much like if the honey bees go terminated there go

The Security Threats And Security Architecture Design
ABSTRACT
Among civilian communication systems, vehicular communications emerge as one of the most
convincing effort made to enhance safety and improve the efficiency of transportation systems, to
meet ever increasing traffic demands. Security is one of the critical factors that need to be
addressed towards the deployment of vehicular communication systems. The efficiency of the
transportation systems, as well as the physical safety of vehicles, drivers, and passengers depend on
the security factor. Vehicular communications has to pass through the analysis of potential security
threats and the design of a robust security architecture able to cope with these threats. In this paper
we deal with the security threats and security architecture design.
INTRODUCTION:
Vehicular communications (VC) will play a vital role in enabling safer, smarter and greener
transportation, with envisioned applications providing, for example, warnings on environmental
hazards (e.g., ice on the pavement), traffic and road conditions (e.g., emergency braking,
congestion, or construction sites), and local (e.g., tourist) information.
To empower such applications, vehicles and road side infrastructure units (RSUs), namely network
nodes, will be furnished with on board processing and wireless communication modules, to
communicate with each other over single or multiple hops. Then, communication between vehicle
to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) (bi directional) will be possible directly

The Key Features Of The World Wide Webs Development Essay
Introduction
In this report I will be researching and reporting on the key features of the World Wide Webs
development and analysing the aspects of what made up the World Wide Web. The main subjects
will be the WWW (World Wide Web), HTML5, CSS3/ CSS box model and JavaScript including
document object model. I will be exploring these subjects core principles, purposes, features,
techniques and latest developments to display and further my knowledge of these subjects and
reinforce them with evidence.
Milestones in the history of the WWW
The World Wide Webwas created in March 1989 by Tim Berners Lee a British scientist working
at CERN ( The Birth of the Web | CERN ). CERN is an acronym of the French phrase Conseil
EuropГ©en pour la Recherche NuclГ©aire which translate to the European Organization for
Nuclear Research. The World Wide Web was created to share information between scientist and
institutes worldwide. The World Wide Web is a series of computer networks interconnected by
Coaxial cable or fibre optic cables spanning underground and across the oceans. Tim Berners Lee
crated his first proposal for the World Wide Web in march 1989 see page 8 ( World Wide Web Born
At CERN 25 Years Ago | CERN ) for image of Tim Berners Lee Diagram for the World Wide Web.

Gene Therapy Of Tay Sachs Using A Modified Adenovirus
Gene Therapy of Tay Sachs Using a Modified Adenovirus
Akash J. Patel
Abstract: Tay Sach s disease results in an accumulation of lipids in the brain s nerve cells. The
underlying cause of Tay Sachs disease is a mutation in a gene that codes for a lytic enzyme
known as Hexosaminidase A (Hex A). Tay Sachs as well as other lipid storage diseases are
incurable, but we believe that gene therapy has the potential for widespread correction of the lipid
storage defect in humans by means of the cross correction cellular pathway. The vehicle of
transportation for the functional copy of the gene is a modified version of the Adenovirus. An
advantage of the adenovirus is that its genome does not integrate into the host genome to transcribe

Functional Hex A enzymes are lytic enzymes, which degrade these old gangliosides and expel
them as waste. Patients with Tay Sach s have a mutation in the gene that codes for the Hex A
enzyme, this results in the lipid build up that can cause neuronal death which lead to the
symptoms of Tay Sach s. The most common form of Tay Sachs takes place during infancy.
Infants with the disease usually show no symptoms until four to six months of age, this is
usually when their development and motor skills tend to weaken. As the disease develops, the
infants start to experience seizures as well as vision and hearing loss. Paralysis and a drop in
intelligence have also been observed. Children with Tay Sachs usually live only to about five
years of age. Because of the high lethality rate any measures toward a cure must be aggressive. As
of date there are no tested treatment options for the disease but there are a few options that have
shown promise for other lipid storage diseases.
Enzyme Replacement Therapy:
Gaucher s disease is a lipid storage disease similar to Tay Sach s because its deficiency of a lytic
lysosomal enzyme. Gaucher s disease is in regards to which parts of the body it affects. Tay Sach s
affects the CNS while Gaucher s affects the spleen and liver. The main treatment option of Gaucher
s is enzyme replacement therapy (ERT). The deficient lytic enzyme (glucoserebrosidase) is injected
intravenously and directed toward the lysosomes in

Bilbo Journey Essay
Bilbo has changed into a different hobbit since he left for his adventure. Before he left, Bilbo
wanted nothing more than to stay in the comforts of his hobbit hole, but afterwards he was more
willing to abandon comfort for more adventures. The hobbit was not at all willing for adventure in
the beginning since Gandalf, a wizard, practically tricked him into going on the trip, but after
getting the thrill of adventure, Bilbo was more open to venturing outside his hobbithole. On the
journey, the company came across many creatures and with these encounters, Bilbo became more
open to different creatures than only meeting visitors that came to his hobbit hole. With these
encounters, however, the hobbitobtained a sense of confidence when meeting adversity. Prior to
Bilbo s departure, when Gandalf initially offered the hobbit an adventure, he kept repeating, we don
t want any adventures here, thank you as he attempted to try and send Gandalf on his way. While
Gandalf and the dwarves were planning their journey, upon hearing... Show more content on

However, those creatures that threatened his life, allowed him to build his confidence. Before,
Bilbo was just a scared hobbit who was frightened at the thought of just a small scope of the
things he would experience. Meeting the giant spider, changed him and the feeling of standing
a chance against his adversity gave him a sense of confidence and strength. Somehow the killing
of a giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of a wizard or the dwarves or
anyone else, made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. He felt a different person, and much fiercer
and bolder in spite of an empty stomach as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into
its sheath. This feeling of a more confident person allowed him to be braver and more courageous
against his enemies rather than cowering and being scared out of his wits in

Macbeth Blood Will Have Blood Character Analysis
People are defined by who they are and what they do. In Shakespeare s the Tragedy of Macbeth,
the character Macbeth shows some characteristics of a good king. However, the power leads him
to become a villain. Power can change a person s life. Macbeth undergoes a tremendous change
that reveals the evil in him. He realizes that in order to gain power he would have to do something
he never did before. After talking to his wife, he knows that King Duncanhas to be killed. When
Macbethsays Blood will have blood, the idea is that killing will lead to only more killing (3.4). He

Lady Macbeth accused him of cowardice and dangled bright prospects of his future before his

thought it would make him a powerful man. If he wouldn t have killed King Duncan, I would
have made him feel less of a man. Lady Macbeth had a nervous break down knowing she wasn t

Robert Frost (1874 1963). Robert Frost was the most widely admired and highly honoured
American poet of the 20th century (Eiermann). Robert Frost was raised in rural New England
where he grew a fond love for the outdoors and nature (Merriman). His love with nature elements
has probably overwhelmed him so much that it has been reflected upon in many of his poems such
as The Tuft of Flowers, Reluctance, and Birches. One of the nature imageries that have been used
frequently by Robert Frostis the snow imagery. Although the snow imagery appears in many
other poems by Frost we will be dealing with the poems Desert Places and Stopping by Woods on

It is also because of the mysteriousness of the woods being lovely, dark, and deep (Frost,
Stopping., line 13) that makes the speaker mesmerized. The snow in this poem gave the speaker
calmness by the woods and gives the poem the mood of welcome and mysteriousness whereas in
Desert Places the snow establishes the mood of loneliness and emptiness. Therefore, if the snow
imagery made the mood of the poems different, then evidently the snow imagery will make the
themes of the two poems different as well.
From the different manipulations of the snow imagery on the moods in Desert Places and
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening it made their themes distinctly different from each other.
The snow that surrounded the speaker in Desert Places made the field look like an open, empty,
lonely place. It is from the surroundings that the speaker creates his own loneliness. From this, it is
clear that the speaker s loneliness inside himself/ herself overwhelms them so much that it causes
their outlook to be of only loneliness. So in Desert Places the theme is that the loneliness that is
created from within of the speaker causes him/her to realize or see the loneliness that is inside them
and also the loneliness that surrounds them, which is nature.

Dislocating My Kneess
The event that I would have to say I experienced in my like that changed my outlook on life would
have to be when I dislocated both of my knees last year a week and a day after New Year s Day.
The reason I choose this experience is because through hardships and stumbles God always has a
plan and reason for it. Like Jeremiah 29:11 13 (NIV) says 11 For I know the plans I have for you,
declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me
and find me when you seek me with all your heart. This is the verse I apply daily to my life. I

Analysis Of Weldon Kees The Doctor Will Return
Weldon Kees was an American poet who was born on February 24, 1914 and died on July 18,
1955. He had so much love to write poems along the lines of death. The Doctor Will Return is
about a poem that illustrates what the hospital looks like and what it consists of if a person chose
to walk inside for a treatment or recovery for their diagnosis. Groucho Marx once said, A hospital
bed is a parked taxi with the meter running (Brainyquote.com). In other words what he was trying
to say was, the longer a person is in the hospital, the bigger the bill is going to be no matter how
much or how less the doctors may help an individual heal. They are tons of other patients in that

The score was 5 4 we were up one set of the two kids from Wheeler. The game had been a very
close match so far. The first two games going 6 4 and 4 6. The team that won this set would win
the match. It was match point. We needed one more point to win the match. Cole then loaded up
to serve the ball. The serve then came whizzing past my head. The kid from wheeler had a very
good forehand and cole had served right to it. The kid from wheeler then returned the serve
cross court back to Cole. Cole then placed a very nice lob into the back left corner of the court.
This corner was also a forehand shot for the kid from wheeler. The kid from wheeler was trying
extremely hard to cross all the way back over to the corner to get the ball that Cole had placed so
tremendously. The kid had gotten to the ball just in time before it took its second bounce. He
then weakly tried to return a lob back to Cole. Little did he know it was too short. He had hit the
ball right at me at the net. The ball floated very slowly through the air. I then loaded up and got
ready to hit an overhead shot.

Businesses exist to produce goods and services. If someone is thinking of starting up their own
business or becoming part of an existing business, they would have to have the knowledge of
what makes business work successfully and know how to how to apply that knowledge in the

this unit I will encounter and evaluate information provided by certain businesses and actually
gather my own information from at least one business. The business I have chosen to study is J

В· There is more pressure if you are a sole trader compared to working in a corporate business like

В· There are no free benefits like a company car.
В· The owner of the sole trader company has to deal with all the problems for themselves.
В· It is very hard to compete with large companies, but on the good side bigger companies usually

В· Probably the disadvantage of a sole trader company is the fact that it will have unlimited

could have their car or house taken away, this is why some businessmen with sole trader companies
put there house in their wives name.

Conformity And How It Affects People Today
In today s society people are constantly shifting towards new beliefs and actions as opposed to
sticking with what they are used to or comfortable with. We have revolutionized and constructed a
set of boundaries and norms to which the citizens in our society must uphold to. My group decided
to conduct experiments on conformityand how it affects people today. So, what exactly is
conformity? Our book Psychology Perspectives and Connections defines conformity as the
tendency of people to adjust their behavior to what others are doing or to adhere to the norms of
their culture. To go along with conformity, social norms are rules about acceptable behavior
imposed by the cultural context in which one lives.
A couple of weeks ago when the... Show

This is just one of the few ways we often conform in our everyday lives.
If you think about it
people conform all the time. In class Dr. Montesinos asked the class if we could imagine a world
where nobody conformed. This idea intrigued me because while a world without conformity can
be imagined, it is hard to imagine what would come of it in the long run. Carolyn spoke about
how everything would be chaotic and nothing would be organized in the world. The human
population would greatly be affected if there was no social code or there were no rules for anyone
to follow. Conformity plays a crucial role to keeping our society in conditions that are suitable for
living.

Conformity can be broken down into two separate branches. Informational social influence and
normative social influence. Informational social influences are conformity to the behavior of
others because one views them as a source of knowledge about what one is supposed to do.
Normative social influence conformity can be defined as conformity to the behavior of others
in order to be accepted by them. A simple example of informational social influence would be if
you walked by a large group of people looking up into the sky your first reaction would be to look
up in the direction in which everyone else is. An example of normative social influence especially
in today s society would be consuming drugs or alcohol. Since people seem to be doing it at an
earlier age in this

20 January 1841, Hong Kong, a Chinese archipelago mainly inhabited by fishers and smugglers,
was occupied by the British Empire during the first opium war against the Chinese
Qing Empire. On 29 August 1842 the war ended with the Treaty of Nanjing, which included an
obligation that China approved the island of Hong Kong as a crown colony of Great
Britain. Further conflicts escalated into the second opium war, which resulted in peace in
1860 with the signing of the Convention of Beijing. One of the paragraphs in the convention
included that the peninsula of Kowloon also became a part of the Crown colony. In 1898 the

to becoming the world s 8 th largest trade nation, 8th largest stock market, 5th largest banking

(Larsson, 1997).
Many argue that this astonishing achievement is due to Hong Kong s laissez faire approach to
economic policies with low taxes, low customs duties, free trade, free capital movements and a
fairly liberal immigration policy. Many wondered how Hong Kong could ever be able to be ruled
by China again, a country with a considered completely different approach to economic policies.
Over the years, Hong Kong has been considered the door to China , meaning that many goods and
services targeted to the mainland Chinese market was traded via Hong Kong
(Larsson, 1997). Would Hong Kong s role as a door to China strengthen with the liberation?
Would the closer ties to the Chinese communist party have a bad influence on Hong Kong s
laissez faire concept? These where some of the big questions before the liberation. How did it end
up? We are in this paper about to investigate some of the details.

Theme Of Nutting By William Wordsworth
William Wordsworth s 1798 poem Nutting was not incorporated into his later great poem, The
Prelude, but as a singular piece it reflects The Prelude s recurring themes of reflection and memory.
Considered to be the Romantic Era s great poet of memory, Wordsworth aimed to publish an
autobiographical work of poetry which would detail events which he felt had contributed to the
growth of his mind as a poet. Nutting, written at the same timeas several other childhood
recollections which would later appear in The Prelude, details an event from his past which
contributed to his present. The past held an attraction for Wordsworth, as he believed that the child

Wordsworth, as this self experiences a sense of pain when I beheld/ The silent trees, and saw the

regret is what defines a self which reaffirms Wordsworth s earlier love of nature. The destructive
self is a felix culpa a phrase referring to the so called fortunate fault of Adam and Eve, which
brought about redemption as Wordsworth is able to reaffirm his love and respect for nature after
regretting its destruction. The rash actions of his previous self father a new self, one more certain

qualities of silence and intrusion. The spirit does not speak, but it has returned from whence it

Fairy Tales By The Brother s Grimm, Rapunzel And Cinderella
Throughout history, fairy tales have been told with the intent of teaching a lesson.
These stories have been altered numerous times, varying with a changing society.
Classic fairy tales by the Brother s Grimm, Rapunzel and Cinderella, were published in the mid
1800s. Many years later Disney released its own versions of these Grimm fairy tales called
Tangled, a modern take on Rapunzel, and Cinderella published in 2010 and
1950 respectfully. Both fairy tales compare and contrast with the more modern versions.
The most potent similarities and differences are seen through the characters, plot, and lesson to be
learned.

telling of the tale there are far more animal characters that act as helpers to
Cinderella consisting of numerous birds, mice, and a few farm animals, while in the
Grimm tale there are only two white pigeons. An additional character in the more modern version
is a Fairy God Mother, who aids Cinderella to the ball and helps her in her time of need. Aside from
the contrast in animal characters, the other characters found in both stories assume the same role.
There are varying plots between the fairy tales Rapunzel and Tangled. In
Rapunzel, the plot involves an evil sorceress, Gothel, imprisoning Rapunzel in a tower, the only
way in or out is by climbing her long golden hair. One day a Prince over hears her singing and falls

two find each other and by Rapunzel s tears she cures her Prince from his blindness and the two

Babbage was so fascinated with designing his analytical engine that he never built one. One
design would suggest an improvement, then another, and another because he could never stop
short of perfection. Shortly before his death in 1871 he wrote: If I survive some few years
longer, the Analytical Engine will exist, and its works will afterwards be spread over the world.
For more than a century his work would lie dormant, waiting other times and other people to
advance his seminal ideas.
One of the few bright spots in Babbage s life was his friendship with Augusta Ada (1816 1852),

Discrimination In The Blue Hotel By Stephen Crane
Entrepreneur and theoretical neuroscientist Vivienne Ming has said that Discrimination is not done
by Villians. It s done by us. This kind of thought process and anti discrimination viewpoints is
common among today s youth and most adults. However, in the not so distant past, discrimination
was very prominent in American society. For example, Stephen Crane s widely read short story, The
Blue Hotel , exhibits many situations where discriminationdrives the plot forward.
Within the first few paragraphs of The Blue Hotel, the reader is promptly introduced to a situation
in which discrimination occurs, due to the description of the Palace Hotel. The author, Stephen
Crane, describes the color scheme of the hotel, which points out how different the hotel is to the
rest of the town, and proceeds to write that The Palace Hotel, then, looked always loud and
screaming in a way that made the bright winter scenes of Nebraska seem only a dull gray. (Crane,
26) Stephen s use of adjectives and style causes the Palace Hotel to seem foreign and almost as if
the establishment doesn t belong in the setting. The author then emphasizes this point by saying
that It was believed that no traveler could pass the Palace Hotel without looking at it. (Crane 26)
This manner of discrimination causes the reader to look at the town and the hotel as two different
entities almost, resulting in readers viewing the town as a more inferior place when compared to
the hotel. After Mr. Crane finishes

MLA Research Paper Savagery, Power And Fear And how it s ties in with Lord Of The Flies
Young children who are left unattended will slowly loose their civilization, which will turn into,
Savagery, Power, and Fear. Civilization is when man meets his basic needs in a healthy manner.
Savagery is when people revert back to their lost human instincts. Power, in the case of Lord Of
the Flies it s a position of ascendancy over others: AUTHORITY. Fear is an unpleasant often strong
emotion caused by expectation or awareness of danger.
Lord of the Flies shows a great amount of uncivilization through out the whole novel. Through all
the characters for example when the boys create the Lord of The flies, which is the bloody, severed

As the boys grow more savage, their belief in the beast grows stronger. By the end of the novel,
the boys behavior is what brings the beast into existences, so the more savagely they act, the
more real the beast seems to become. ( Sparknotes, Themes, Motifs and Symbols). Jack one of
the young boys who were stranded on the island is very savage, for example when Jack cannot
bare the thought of someone else telling his story about how he killed a pig, he begins, we
spread round. I crept. On hands and knees. The spears fell out because they hadn t no barbs on.
The pig ran away and made an awful noise it turned back and ran into the circle, bleeding we
closed in I cut the pigs throat. (Golding 79). Jack had reverted back to uncivilized ways because
his civilization had been shattered because of being stranded on the island. Jack even gets the
rest of the boys to join in dancing around the fire as they were cooking the meet from the pig
they were saying kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in. ( Golding 79). Savagery can destroy
civilization. It only takes one person to become uncivilized and the others will slowly follow
after. But on the other hand is it only children who become savages when left unattended or can
young people who have grown up in good neutering homes become savages, the answer is yes

Listening Well-A Chaplain Vocation Summary
In Listening Well A Chaplain Vocation, Nicole Chivilis surprises me when he points out that
listening has a sacramental dimension. I have no doubt of that, but I never think of listening as
sacrament. Indeed, Chivilis indicates that in the hospital setting, circles of unity, understanding,
reconciliation and forgiveness among family members and friends could be formed to share about
their loved ones. They form a communion table and the chaplain is in the sacred space. Thus,
according to Chivilis, listening well creates a space in which a truth can be spoken. I think that
recognizing listening as sacrament is very significant because the stories that we the listeners
receive are sacred treasures. For that reason, I always feel blessed

Cover Of Captain America
By looking at the cover of the comic Captain America, a reader could project themselves into the
character of Captain America through his bravery, heroism, and patriotism. Captain America is a
larger than life character because he is a superhero and has superhuman abilities. Within his story
he is a character that fights for America and is looked upon as a role model and the protector of
America. On the cover of the Captain Americacomic book, Captain America is shown charging
forward, shield in hand, punching Adolf Hitler in the face. He is surrounded and outnumbered by
Nazi soldiers who are actively shooting at him, though their efforts are in vain because the bullets
are shown ricocheting of his body and shield. A small caption on the right... Show more content on

The nighttime environment of the background is dark and ominous and allows the reader to
imagine the story taking place in this cemetery setting. It is not easy to tell whether the man is
getting dragged in the grave or the zombie suddenly popped out of the ground and grabbed him,
but it is up to the reader s imagination to decide what happened next. The font of the text appears
to be melting and dripping and resembles the sagging foliage on the trees in the scene below,
adding to the creepiness of the visual elements on the cover. The additional strange looking
characters in the column on the left invites the reader to wonder about how the role they play in
the other titles of the stories. All of these elements come together to draw the reader into a
fantasy world of grotesque horror and terror. For the reader, escaping into a world of macabre
monsters can be a way to get away from their safe and structured everyday lives. In a world
where monsters are real, there can be comfort in knowing that there is a way to physically kill
your fears and overcome them, whereas in the real world, our fears are oftentimes
psychological. When we read comics or graphic novels, the stories and characters are much
more appealing if we can identify with them in some way. One graphic novel that several people
might relate to due to it taking place in a real period of history is Maus: A Survivor s Tale. On
the cover of the first volume of the graphic novel, two mice are shown huddled together with
their backs against a wall. The symbol for the Nazi party looms behind him with the face of a cat
pasted over it. On the cover of the second volume, several mice are depicted behind barbed wire
lines and wearing the recognizable striped uniform of concentration camps in Germany. The same
Nazi symbol with a cat logo is present in the background as

The Theme Of Existentialism In The Brother s Karamazov
The Brother s Karamazov describes the life of a man, named Fyodor Karamazov, and his four
sons. Each son represents a certain worldview which is explored throughout the novel. The oldest
son, Dmitri, after arguing with his father over his inheritance, falls in love with a woman named
Grushenka. When Fyodor is murdered, and three thousand roubles are stolen from him, the police
accuse Dmitri because of his conflict with Fyodor. The Brothers Karamazovdescribes how three
men with contrasting world views discover the corruption of their family and the truth behind a
hideous murder.
Existentialism is one worldview which is displayed in The Brother s Karamazov. Existentialists
believe that life is absurd and survival of the fittest. Ivan and Smerdyakov both view the world as ...

SГёren Kierkegaard is considered the father of existentialism ( Christian and Theological
Existentialism ). Kierkegaard wrote a book about the paradox surrounding Abraham sacrificing
Isaac. The narrator questions whether Abraham s faith in God can justify killing his son (SГёren
Kierkegaard: A Master of Refraction 78). Another existentialist, Karl Jaspers, argues that, free will
makes all faith essentially existential. Jaspers also argues that, since life is absurd, it is less absurd
to believe in a God which promises eternal life than to believe in nothing at all ( Christian and
Theological Existentialism ).
Dostoyevsky uses two contrasting chapters to argue against atheistic existentialism. The Grand
Inquisitor is a story written by Ivan Karamazov. In the story, Jesus visits the Spanish Inquisition,
but the religious leaders do not want Him there. They claim that they already have freedom, and
that His return will take the freedom away. The chapter reveals Ivan s belief that the church is just
a cult which thrives off of the weak, and it explains how incredibly boring a sinless world would

Essay Questions Rhetorical Readers Ask
Questions Rhetorical Readers Ask 1. What is the structure of this particular society as a whole?
Where does this society stand in human history? What varieties of men and women now prevail in
this society and in this period? These questions are significant because they describe the direct or
indirect actions, and results taken by man during the course of his struggles, and how it affects the
outcome of his perspective, shaping the reality the individual proceeds to either strive or sink into
the loop of failure. Every community cares about what is taking place in the world, whether or not
they think that it directly affects their lives or not. Every action taken by an individual always has
an outcome that leads to another outcome in another situation. 2. The intended audience is society

Essay Wine Industry
America s winemakers are making superior wines and reaping global acclaim. In a single generation
the United States wine industry s global success is a fascinating story of entrepreneurial vision and
savvy marketing. The American industry has new innovations, new competition, and new markets,
which make the future look bright for the wineindustry.
In terms of worldwide recognition and success, individual American wineries have made their
mark only in the last 50 years. Not until the end of Prohibition in 1933 did the American wine
industry take off on a large scale. America has now become the fourth largest producer in the world
behind Italy, France, and Spain.
The wine market consists of still wine, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The U.S. ranks 34th in per capita wine consumption, just behind Slovakia and Canada, and ahead of
Latvia. Per capita wine consumption is 2.72 gallons.
According to 2002 Adams Wine handbook, 32.2% of adult Latinos, 28.8% of adult Asian
Americans, and 25.8% of adult African Americans are wine drinkers.
America s top 10 export wine markets are the United Kingdom, Canada, Netherlands, Japan,
Belgium, Germany, Ireland, France, Sweden, and Denmark.
Infrequent increases in Federal alcohol taxes have led to significant erosion in inflation adjusted
values of these taxes. In 1951, inflation adjusted value of tax was $1.16 per wine gallon. The
inflation rates imposed on wine currently is about $1.07 per wine gallon. The wine taxes vary
based on alcohol content. They currently range from $1.07 to 3.40 per wine gallon.
Infrequent and modest increases in state and Federal alcoholic beverage excise taxes contribute
to declines over time in inflation adjusted alcoholic beverage prices. Federal, state and local
governments can use a variety of policies to raise the price of alcoholic beverages. Infrequent and
modest increases in taxes and repeal of some control policies have contributed to sharp reductions
in inflation prices over time.
The U.S. Gross Domestic Product of the wine industry was 3.20% in 2003. The inflation rate in
2003 was 1.9%.

Much of Canadian society is reflective of different cultures from around the world making multiculturalism a very relevant topic to Canadians. Joseph Smith s Influence On Religion Can you imagine taking care of 40 wives, being the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and fighting for his religious and civil rights? Joseph Smith, prophet and leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints, left an important legacy on religion and American History; Smith restored the mormon church, became prophet of the Church of JesusChrist of Latter Day Saints, and was murdered for his religious beliefs. Smith as a young kid moved often and had a desire to find the true church but he knew that none of the churches that were on Earth while he was young were the true church. The one way Smith thought to give mormons their religious and civil rights back was to become the president. Smith was also chosen by the Lord to be prophet, Smith prayed in the woods in New York and asked to have the knowledge of which church was the true church. Smith said, I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof. The Lord answered him, many people pray to find the true church but are not answered the way Smith was answered. • 9. My Halo Research Paper The Background During the summer before my junior year in high school I broke my neck while on vacation in Outer Banks, NC. I spent the next three months in a cervical halo and three more months after that in a standard C collar neck brace. My first month back at school was spent in the halo which was interesting because not many people had ever seen one of these braces and did not know the full extent of the hardware. It is a large plastic vest with sheep wool lining the inside; making attending a school with predominantly outdoor hallways in the August heat a very sweaty endeavor. From the vest shot four bars, two in front and two in back, that held a horseshoe shaped bar (the halo) containing 4 screws. At the end of each screw was a fine point that anchored into my skull and stabilized my head/neck. I could not take the halo off and had to bathe, sleep, eat and everything else while wearing the device. • 10. How Causation Is A Relation Between Events Or States Of... 1.(a) In Chisholm s paper, Human freedom and the self, Chisholm notes that causation is a relation between events or states of affairs. For example, if the roof in my house cave in during a hurricane this would be something that was caused by several other events such as the roof being too weak, the rain pressure being too much for the roof to hold, excessive rain, etc. With this term, Chisholm created two other narrower terms to specifically describe the different types of causations. The first causation is transeunt which is when one event or state of affairs causes other events or state of affairs. An example of Transeunt causation is if I threw a piece of paper in a recycling bin my event would be recycling but the unknown event cause by this event would be more oxygen in the world for people to breath in because that paper can be reused instead of having to cut more trees down and cutting down our oxygen. The second type of causation would be Immanent causation, which is when an agent (or person) causes an event or state of affairs. An example of Immanent causation is me recycling the paper because I m the agent who recycled the piece of paper, it wasn t done by another event. During the paper, Chisholm reflects on two objections and takes his defense on both. The first one being simply a fact of (a) He could have done otherwise means no more nor less than and (b) If he could have chosen to do otherwise, he would have done otherwise. Durkheim had an important impact on the development of sociology. Durkheim s studies into suicide helped me in understanding it as an issue in contemporary society. His most significant contribution was his work defining suicide in social terms rather than individual terms. He was interested in how suicide might be influenced more by social context and have a broader interpretation beyond the individual.Durkheim wanted to prove that social situations, characteristics, activities, interactions etc, influence and control individual and person behavior rather than the other way around. Durkheim wrote a book called Le Suicide in 1897. This was a groundbreaking book in the field of sociology. In this book Durkheim explores the differing suicide rates that are among society. • 14. The Literary Language Of Madness In Hamlet By William... The literary language of madness drawn from Classical drama came to the English stage through Old French and the literature of fools. The body and Mind are two major elements in Madness. Through a series of scenes, the play displays the sorts of distinctions between all the characters actions, natural and supernatural, distraction and feigned madness that were being demanded at other cultural sites. It is my conclusion that Hamletuses a faГ§ade of insanity to hide his attempts to kill Claudius and avenge his father s death. There are several different kinds of madness in Hamlet, the three main are; female madness, feigned madness, and melancholy. Madness can be seen in two characters specifically. Ophelia which represents female madness, and Hamlet which represents feigned or false madness. Hamlet struggles with two things that drive through his Melancholic state: Is the ghost speaking the truth? And did Claudius truly commit the crime of killing the former Kind of Denmark? Hamlet s descent into madness starts when he is confronted with the news that his Uncle Claudius will marry his mother, Gertrude, and become kind of Denmark. Claudius manipulates Gertrude during his monologue at the end of the scene. We see how manipulative a character he is, as he is trying to turn everybody against Hamlet that he can. Is it this manipulation that caused Gertrude to marry him? Gertrude acknowledges her guilt, which could be a result of her meeting with Hamlet in the bedroom. Like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Security Threats And Security Architecture Design ABSTRACT Among civilian communication systems, vehicular communications emerge as one of the most convincing effort made to enhance safety and improve the efficiency of transportation systems, to meet ever increasing traffic demands. Security is one of the critical factors that need to be addressed towards the deployment of vehicular communication systems. The efficiency of the transportation systems, as well as the physical safety of vehicles, drivers, and passengers depend on the security factor. Vehicular communications has to pass through the analysis of potential security threats and the design of a robust security architecture able to cope with these threats. In this paper we deal with the security threats and security architecture design. INTRODUCTION: Vehicular communications (VC) will play a vital role in enabling safer, smarter and greener transportation, with envisioned applications providing, for example, warnings on environmental hazards (e.g., ice on the pavement), traffic and road conditions (e.g., emergency braking, congestion, or construction sites), and local (e.g., tourist) information. To empower such applications, vehicles and road side infrastructure units (RSUs), namely network nodes, will be furnished with on board processing and wireless communication modules, to communicate with each other over single or multiple hops. Then, communication between vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) (bi directional) will be possible directly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The underlying cause of Tay Sachs disease is a mutation in a gene that codes for a lytic enzyme known as Hexosaminidase A (Hex A). Tay Sachs as well as other lipid storage diseases are incurable, but we believe that gene therapy has the potential for widespread correction of the lipid storage defect in humans by means of the cross correction cellular pathway. The most common form of Tay Sachs takes place during infancy. Infants with the disease usually show no symptoms until four to six months of age, this is usually when their development and motor skills tend to weaken. As the disease develops, the infants start to experience seizures as well as vision and hearing loss. Paralysis and a drop in intelligence have also been observed. Children with Tay Sachs usually live only to about five years of age. Because of the high lethality rate any measures toward a cure must be aggressive. From the different manipulations of the snow imagery on the moods in Desert Places and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening it made their themes distinctly different from each other. The snow that surrounded the speaker in Desert Places made the field look like an open, empty, lonely place. It is from the surroundings that the speaker creates his own loneliness. From this, it is clear that the speaker s loneliness inside himself/ herself overwhelms them so much that it causes their outlook to be of only loneliness. The first two games going 6 4 and 4 6. The team that won this set would win the match. It was match point. We needed one more point to win the match. Cole then loaded up to serve the ball. The serve then came whizzing past my head. The kid from wheeler had a very good forehand and cole had served right to it. The kid from wheeler then returned the serve cross court back to Cole. Cole then placed a very nice lob into the back left corner of the court. This corner was also a forehand shot for the kid from wheeler. The kid from wheeler was trying extremely hard to cross all the way back over to the corner to get the ball that Cole had placed so tremendously. The kid had gotten to the ball just in time before it took its second bounce. He then weakly tried to return a lob back to Cole. Little did he know it was too short. He had hit the ball right at me at the net. The ball floated very slowly through the air. I then loaded up and got ready to hit an overhead shot. Conformity And How It Affects People Today In today s society people are constantly shifting towards new beliefs and actions as opposed to sticking with what they are used to or comfortable with. We have revolutionized and constructed a set of boundaries and norms to which the citizens in our society must uphold to. My group decided to conduct experiments on conformityand how it affects people today. So, what exactly is conformity? Our book Psychology Perspectives and Connections defines conformity as the tendency of people to adjust their behavior to what others are doing or to adhere to the norms of their culture. To go along with conformity, social norms are rules about acceptable behavior imposed by the cultural context in which one lives.

If you think about it people conform all the time. In class Dr. Montesinos asked the class if we could imagine a world where nobody conformed. This idea intrigued me because while a world without conformity can be imagined, it is hard to imagine what would come of it in the long run. Carolyn spoke about how everything would be chaotic and nothing would be organized in the world. The human population would greatly be affected if there was no social code or there were no rules for anyone to follow. Conformity plays a crucial role to keeping our society in conditions that are suitable for living.
Conformity can be broken down into two separate branches. Informational social influence and normative social influence. Informational social influences are conformity to the behavior of others because one views them as a source of knowledge about what one is supposed to do. Normative social influence conformity can be defined as conformity to the behavior of others in order to be accepted by them. A simple example of informational social influence would be if you walked by a large group of people looking up into the sky your first reaction would be to look up in the direction in which everyone else is. An example of normative social influence especially in today s society would be consuming drugs or alcohol. Since people seem to be doing it at an earlier age in this ... Many argue that this astonishing achievement is due to Hong Kong s laissez faire approach to economic policies with low taxes, low customs duties, free trade, free capital movements and a fairly liberal immigration policy. Many wondered how Hong Kong could ever be able to be ruled by China again, a country with a considered completely different approach to economic policies. Over the years, Hong Kong has been considered the door to China , meaning that many goods and services targeted to the mainland Chinese market was traded via Hong Kong (Larsson, 1997). This kind of thought process and anti discrimination viewpoints is common among today s youth and most adults. However, in the not so distant past, discrimination was very prominent in American society. For example, Stephen Crane s widely read short story, The Blue Hotel , exhibits many situations where discriminationdrives the plot forward. Within the first few paragraphs of The Blue Hotel, the reader is promptly introduced to a situation in which discrimination occurs, due to the description of the Palace Hotel. The author, Stephen Crane, describes the color scheme of the hotel, which points out how different the hotel is to the rest of the town, and proceeds to write that The Palace Hotel, then, looked always loud and screaming in a way that made the bright winter scenes of Nebraska seem only a dull gray. (Crane, 26) Stephen s use of adjectives and style causes the Palace Hotel to seem foreign and almost as if the establishment doesn t belong in the setting. The author then emphasizes this point by saying that It was believed that no traveler could pass the Palace Hotel without looking at it.
