This document defines various hospital statistics related to inpatients and bed usage. An inpatient is a patient who is formally admitted to the hospital and receives overnight care. Statistics include the inpatient census (number of inpatients at a time), bed count days (number of occupied or unoccupied beds), total bed count days, discharges (terminations of hospitalization), and length of stay (number of days between admission and discharge). Examples are provided to demonstrate how to calculate average daily census, average daily discharges, average length of stay, bed turnover rate (number of times a bed changes occupants), bed turnover interval (time between occupants), and bed occupancy rate (proportion of beds occupied).

2. Inpatient:
Is a patient who has been formally
admitted to the hospital and to whom
room, bed and continuous nursing
services is provided in an area of the
hospital where patients generally
stay at least overnight.

3. 1- Inpatient census:
Indicates the number of inpatients
presented in the hospital at any
given time.
2- Bed count days:
is a unit of measurement denoting the
presence of inpatient bed (either
occupied or vacant) set up and staffed
for use in a one-24-hr period.

4. 3- Total bed count days:
Is the sum of inpatients bed count
days in the period under consideration.
Example:
Suppose:
1- The total number of beds available
at a certain hospital is 50 beds.
2- Month of Shawwal = 30 days

5. The number of total beds available
during month of Shawwal is:
50 x 30 = 1500 bed counts.

6. 4 - Discharges:
Is a termination of hospitalization,
whether alive or dead. Deaths are
considered discharges and they are
included in the total discharges.
A fetus that was not alive at the time
of delivery was never a patient and is
not included in inpatient hospital
statistic.

7. 5- Length of stay:
Number of calendar days from
admission to discharge. To compute a
patient's length of stay from admission
to discharge the date of admission is
subtracted from the date of discharge.

8. For example:
1- if a patient was admitted on Safar
25th and discharged Safar 28, his
length of stay is (28 – 25) = 3 days.
2- If a patient is admitted and
discharged on the same day, his
length of stay is one day.

14. Bed turnover rate:
The number of times a bed, on average,
change occupants during a given period
of time.

15. 5- Bed turnover interval:
period where a bed is unoccupied
between patients.

= ((500) x (30) – 12785)/1691 ) = 1.3
The interval between one occupant
and the next is 1 day.
