Mastreatment And Physical Abuse In The Movie Precious
In the film Precious, this movie discuses a lot of maltreatment and physical abuse. This movie is
by far one of the worse because it deals with mistreatment and negative talk on an innocent
teenager who wants to be all that she can be, but she is insulted and told differently. Although it
may be a bad movie, I always hope that this will inspire other people like Precious to speak out
on what they are going through. There is a lot of drugs being used in the home and just plain out
disrespect. Claireece Precious Jones who is 16 years old grew up in Harlem during the late
1980s. All of the poor and dirty crime that happens, none of which affects Precious as much as
the constant mistreatment she receives at the hands of her brutally vile mother Mary. Precious
is treated as a slave, fixing food, washing dishes, and tending to her wretched master as the
worthless woman smokes, collects welfare, and watches TV. Precious lives a life that involves
many sociological issues that have unarguably caused her great pain throughout her young life.
Having endured poverty, sexual abuse, and verbal abuse her life has been far from perfect, but
she realizes the need to defeat these negative sociological factors to achieve a life that seems to
her as only a fantasy. During school, Precious tries very hard to blend into the background; she
dreams of being normal, gracing the covers of magazines, and sporting an arm candy boyfriend.
The feeling that I felt when I watched this movie breaks my heart because there are people in
this world that are indeed treated like this and this is very sad. It s very tough for teens and
children to go through life hurting and crying out for help. This is what Precious face. Perhaps
the most affecting element of the film is Precious refusal to demand sympathy. The movie tells
the story of Precious being abused and mistreated as a teenager, out of the apartment of cigarette
smoke and pig s feet and bed springs and casual cruelty and into the world of unimagined
possibilities. She s aided on the journey by a literacy teacher Ms. Rain, into whose hands she falls
after being expelled out of school and a social worker who digs up her history of abuse. This movie
was very depressing to watch. When it

Shlieffen Plan
World War I was a devastating war that was mainly Britain, Russia, France, and the US against
Austria Hungary, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire. Throughout the entire war, many different
strategies and tactics were used by the /parties. Some were genius and some were absolute
failures. There were a multitude of goals different powers wanted, and each one took unique
approaches to achieve said goals. One of the first plans of WWI was developed almost a decade
before the war actually took place. The Schlieffen Plan, which Alfred von Schlieffen, Chief of the
Imperial German General Staff, based off of Hannibal s tactic 2000 years earlier, consisted of
Germany taking France out at the start of the war. That way, Britain and Russia couldn t continue...

Danilov argued that on the outbreak of war in Europe the German Army would concentrate its
forces against France. Danilov therefore suggested that four of its armies should immediately
invade East Prussia. In 1912 it was decided to heavily alter Plan 19. Only two armies were now
to attack East Prussia with the rest concentrating on defending Russia from the Austro Hungarian
Army. Now the way soldiers attacked in WWI is interesting. Military actions designed to take
control of enemy trenches were called attacks or offensives. The difference between attacks and
offensives are an attack usually involved a division (16,000 men) while an offensive was bigger
and would use at least one corps. The main objective of an attack was to break the enemy line, but
an offensive was an attempt to occupy any positions that were taken during the operation. This
meant that consistent fighting raised serious problems of running out of supplies. Before attacks
and offensives took place, heavy artillery was used to soften up the enemy trenches. At the
offensive at the Somme in the summer of 1916 General Douglas Haig ordered an eight day
preliminary bombardment before sending 750,000 men (27 divisions) to attack the German

The Athletes And Professional Athletes
Change occurs instantly once a player is drafted into the NFL as a professional athlete. The fame,
money, and lifestyle are brand new and exhilarating. The professional athletes are initiated into a
culture of partying, bling, new cars, new houses, and new followers. Along with their careers as an
athlete, they instantly sign contracts making them millionaires over night. The majority of athletes
come from backgrounds of poverty and rural areas, making them untrained on how to handle
finances. NFL players are given both briefings on ways to financetheir money and agents willing to
handle their bank accounts. Because the players hire agents to manage their funds, the athletes no
longer see or feel the need to attend meetings on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One problem NFL players face is learning how to budget their money. Once they get drafted into
the NFL they receive large salaries that dramatically alter their lives. The average professional
athlete in the U.S. makes more than most people earn throughout their lives (MunKNEE).
Receiving such large salaries changes both the way people live their lives and how they spend
their money. Suddenly they have the capability to buy expensive cars, fancy clothes, and buy
out clubs for a night. The majority of professional football players spend large amounts of
money on items that show off their wealth, so once new players join the league they feel the
pressure to match up to the others. Scott Bercu, a financial accountant for NFL players, agrees
that athletes spend their money like crazy. He sees players earn a $5 million dollar salary, but
by the time they pay their agent and taxes they are left with only $2 million. The rate at which
these players spend their money does not match up to their $2 million dollars left in the bank
(MunKNEE). Even though these players make large salaries, they are not in the business for
many years. The average career span of NFL players is 3.5 years (MunKNEE). They have a
short amount of time to make there millions in order to live after their career, but if they don t
make there millions fast and learn how to save it then they will not survive. Overspending and
becoming wrapped up in the glamorous life is too

In the article Why Do Lutherans Sing? Lutherans, Music, and the Gospel in the First Century of
the Reformation , J. Andreas Loewe discusses Luther s use of music to spread the Gospel, and his
influence on music in the Lutheran Church at the beginning of the Reformation. Loewe claims that
regarding Luther s passion for music, he was not only a skilled musician, but he strongly believed
that music was an ideal means to come to know and proclaim the mystery of God, (69). Luther

This was particularly effective in reaching people due to the varying literacy levels among the
people. When the message was sung, it was often about Reformation principles, however he also
used them to comment on the current times. One of his first hymns, Ein Newes Lied , was written
in response to the martyrdom of two young men who were considered lutherans by the Catholic
Church. All of these hymns were spread through word of mouth, letter, and broadsheet, even
through areas that were still solidly Catholic. Their inclusion into the Protestant worship service
was a mark of profound change for the church. They were regularly sung before the service multiple
times, even before Catholic services. This caused such a disturbance in the Catholic Church that the
primary distributor of the hymns was imprisoned, however this in turn caused such an uproar that
six to eight hundred people gathered to forcefully free the peddler. Luther s hymns were so
effective that they travelled to cities and often won over its inhabitants before Luther even

The general focus of this research is to examine performance in standard cognitive frameworks and
online tasks. The researchers hope to examine the influence that math anxiety exerts on
mathematical cognition and to identify the processing components that are so influenced.
HYPOTHESIS:
The higher the math anxiety, the lower the working memory capacity, the higher the probability to
get a low performance.
VARIABLES:

Feminine Soul In The Host
In the opening of the novel, The Host (Meyer, 2010), the protagonist, a feminine soul, who comes
to be named Wanderer, has been placed in the body of Melanie, a twenty year old female rebel who
was caught as she tried to reunite with her still human cousin, Sharon. Melanie, rather than be
caught by the parasites threw herself down an elevator shaft to escape the Seeker souls, encased in
humanbodies, who were chasing her (Meyer, 2010, p. 12). Melanie is one of an unknown number
of remaining humanswho have so far eluded being inserted with an alien soul during the past few
years of alien occupation on Earth (p. 18). The souls silver bodies are small enough to fit in the
palm of a human s hand and have thousands of long, thin, feathery... Show more content on

As a result, the social environment on Earth has become much less violent. As Wanda (short for
Wanderer) says, No one could compare what had been and what was now and not admit that
Earth was better thanks to us (Meyer, 2010, p. 60). In fact, soul infected humans began being so
kind to one another that the remaining humans knew that something was changing. Keeping with
the dystopian genre framework there has been a cataclysmic change on Earth through this alien
invasion. Those humans who have not had an alien inserted into their brain now have to hide
their existence from the souls Seekers who are less bothered by the use of violence than the
other peace loving souls. Wanda and other souls see this as a sign that a Seeker is a lesser
individual and that only the least civilized souls, the least evolved, the lesser among us, would be
drawn to the path of Seeker (p. 22). However, on Earth, unlike on other planets where occupation
was relatively easy, humans have proven to be resistant to becoming hosts and the occupation has
gone awry and has turned into a fierce and bloody battle (p. 22). Therefore, the Seekers have had a
greater influence on the occupation as they hunt down and capture humans such as

Comparing Erich Fromm s Disobedience As A Psychological...
Erich Fromm wrote Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem, in 1963, an essay
detailing balance between obedience and disobedience.
Fromm cited that authority figures insisted obedience as a virtue and disobedience as a vice. He
argued that disobedience began human history itself and necessary to continue it. Fromm first
discussed a Biblical example: the story of Adam and Eve. Humans were in harmony with nature, yet
still in their infancy. Prophets argued it is through man s sin can reason and love developed, and
men become human. Only through disobedience were they able to grow into individuals and
independence. Fromm drew onto the Greek myth of Prometheus as another source of evolution
through disobedience. Prometheus theft of fire from the gods laid down the foundations for
civilization. Both examples have mankind s history begin with disobedience. The capacity of
disobedience allows humans to evolve.
Fromm argues that if disobedience began history, then obedience will end it. While humankind s
capability is great, it outpaces rational and humanistic ideals. Destruction will come through
obeying amoral thoughts; commands from higher authority and archaic passions of fear, hate, and
greed (p. 684, 11th ed.). Fromm clarifies that obedience or disobedience is not a single value
system. The principles that guide in obedience or disobedience may be either good or bad. If an
individual is completely obedient, then they are a slave; if they are completely

How Does Nagaina Change Throughout The Novel
Characterization is how a character is defined. We understand characters in the literature by
paying attention to what they say, what they do, and how other characters react to them. In Rikki
Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling, Rikki Tikki, a young brave mongoose who has been washed out
of his burrow due to a high summer flood. He found himself in the garden of a nice human family
who adopts him and he decides to protect the human family from snakes. In the garden, he met the
bullies, Nag and Nagaina. They both fight with each other for the control of the garden. In the end,
Rikki Tikki Tavikilled them and made the garden a peaceful place. Based on the clues from the

her eggs. When there were three eggs to kill, Rikki Tikki heard Darzee s wife screaming that

their white faces. She is making Teddy s family scared before she kills them, so she could get the

Knapp Commission Scandal
The Knapp Commission, established in 1970 by New York City Mayer John V. Lindsey

investigate allegations of police corruption in New York City( Dempsey Forst,2016). After
becoming concerned with the corruption of other officers, two New York CityOfficers, Frank
Serpicoand David Durk supplied information to a New York City reporter, David Burnham (Knapp

reports prompted the establishment of the Knapp Commission.
Accounts of corruption were mainly prostitution, gambling, and narcotics ( Knapp Commission,

free meals, movie tickets, coffee, donuts, or free hotel rooms, do not see this as corruption. It is

The Pardoner from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales Essay
The Pardoner from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales
In Chaucer s Canterbury Tales, The Pardoner tells a story in the form of a sermon, an exemplum,
to be exact. He intends to teach the congregation that love of money is the root of all evil and that
consequences of sin is death. The symbolic function of The Old Man is debatable; is he, for
instance Death s messenger , Death himself, or a satanic figure who tempts, much in the fashion
of the Devil as serpent in the Adam and Ever story. The story is made even more complex and
ironic by the disreputable character of the Pardoner as narrator. He is an immoral man who tells a
very moral story for very immoral reasons.

Death under a large oak tree. The men hurry to the spot and instead find eight bushels of gold,
and decide to keep the gold. The reader is supposed to see that the money is death, and is lying at
the root of the tree, which is where we begin to form the theme, money is the root of all evil.
However, the drunken rioters do not see through this and they grow greedy and kill themselves
through trickery. They begin celebrating their fortune with bread and wine, however shortly after;
the first two rioters and the youngest rioter begin to display devilish thoughts to gain more of the
money. However the older two rioters kill the youngest because they want more money. Their
journey ends when the older two rioters decide to kill the younger rioter because they want more
money, however the younger rioter had already poisoned their wine to attempt to gain all the
money. The older two rioters drink the wine and die. Thus completing the theme, money is the root
of all evil.
After completing the tale, the reader is lead to believe that the Old
Man is none other than Death himself. The man is described as wearing a robe that covers his
entire body; much like a Grim Reaper would wear. After he is treated so badly by these men, he
just happens to lead them into a death trap, which he knows will cost nothing but problems. It is
also said that the man

In How to Read Literature Like a Professor John Foster describes methods on how to relate texts
to each other. He writes about reoccurring character development, relation to Shakespeare, the
Bible and any other reoccurring literary devices commonly used in books. The___ Foster states in
his book is seen being used in Upton Sinclair s The Jungle.
In Foster s writing, he believes the emphasis should be on the character s personality being altered
throughout the story, No matter how large or small the action, the most important thing that
characters can do is change, develop, learn, mature, call it what you will. This change is seen in

Ultra High Temperature Ceramics (UHTC) Essay
Ultra high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are materials rarely found in nature, characterized by
high melting points, hardness, thermal conductivities (if compared to other ceramics), good wear
resistance and mechanical strength.1,2,3 Besides, they are chemically and thermally stable under a
variety of conditions due to their high negative free energy of formation.1,3
The materials that fit in these criteria are ceramics compounds made of borides, nitrides and
carbides. As a result of having those properties, this class of material can be applied in extreme
environments such as extreme temperatures, chemical reactivity and erosive attack. Because of

Essay about Scene Analysis of David Lynch s Film, Blue Velvet
Blue Velvet: Scene Analysis
The opening scene in David Lynch s Blue Velvet portrays the theme of the entire film. During this
sequence he uses a pattern of showing the audience pleasant images, and then disturbing images to
contrast the two.
The first shot of the roses over the picket fence and the title track Blue Velvet establishes the setting
(Lumberton) as a typical suburban town. The camera starts on a bright blue sky with birds chirping
and flying by and then tilts down to bright red roses over a bright white fence (red, white and blue
symbolizes the American dream maybe?). Both the visual and audible aspects of this shot gives a
pleasant feeling of safety and serenity.
The next shot is of a bright red fire truck slowly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next shot is an establishing shot of a house in the neighborhood. It cuts to a man watering
his lawn with a hose and then to a woman inside watching a crime film (ironic that crime is a
theme of this film) on the television and drinking coffee. It cuts back to the man outside and to
the spigot and snake like hose. The hose is leaking and the man struggles to untangle the hose
from the branch. It cuts back and forth between the hose and branch and then back to the man as
he grabs his neck and collapses to the ground. As he lays there having a stroke (maybe?) on the
ground with the hose in his hand, a dog playfully bites the stream and a baby eating a popsicle
walks up. It zooms in on the dog twice and the frame rate is lowered. This in a way symbolizes
how ignorance is bliss. The dog and the baby have no idea what has happened to the man, just like
the people in the town have no idea what happens behind closed doors.
After the dog it cuts to a close up of the grass in begins to zoom in, closer and closer. The score
becomes non existent and the churning noise begins and becomes louder as the grass gets closer.
The camera moves through the grass and the disturbing sound of bones breaking becomes
prominent. The lighting becomes darker and darker and the beetles are revealed. The beetles are
shot with very low key lighting

Persuasive Essay On The Problem Of Global Warming
The world is addicted to fossil fuels, but it is quickly using up its resources and destroying the
environment. Based on current estimates, oil and natural gas will peak by 2040. In addition, over
the past 50 years, the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded
history (MacMillan Para 1). The United States needs to figure out a way to fulfill their massive
demand for power while ensuring the safety of the planet. There are many possible ways to attack
the problem at hand. The first proposal is to mandate the installment of solar rooftop units
throughout the country. Another proposal is to install solar parks throughout the country. A final
proposal is to simply incentivize the use and development of solar energy while phasing out fossil
fuels. By implementing one of these three proposals, the United States government could help solve
a problem that looms over the entire population.
The major problem solar energy will look to fix is global warming. Global warming is the gradual
increase of the average global temperature. This rise in heat is caused by the greenhouse effect,
which is the warming that happens when certain gases in Earth s atmosphere trap heat. These
gases let in light but keep heat from escaping, like the glass walls of a greenhouse (What is Global
Warming Para 4). This process is natural and keeps Earth at an inhabitable temperature. Recently,
however, the burning of fossil fuels has enhanced this effect, which is

Thesis Statement For Plastic Pollution
Plastic Pollution Outline
Thesis Statement: Plastic pollution is an ongoing issue that is quickly growing as time passes by,
and if humans don t try to put an end to it, it will affect them in the long term. It is a serious issue
that needs to be addressed because it is affecting humans, animals, and the environment.
Plastic pollution affects humans even if they don t realize it.
Plastic pollution harms people s endocrine system.
Chemicals like BPA and phthalates causes development problems.
Other diseases have chemical connections to plastic.
Women are affected more by plastic pollution.
Pregnant women who were exposed to plastic chemicals gave birth to kids with genital defects.
As people reproduce, these defects become worse.

Unfortunately, most of mankind decides to run away from the problem instead of facing the
difficult truth. Because of their reckless actions, many animals are suffering when they should not
have to. As a matter of fact, plastic pollution kills millions of birds, fish, and 100,000 sea turtles
every year (D., G.). With the increasing amount of this plastic trash, the death toll of these animals
will continue to rise and will not fall until humans decide to take action. While many of these
animals are dying because they do not know any better, that still doesn t mean humans should still
turn away from the problem. Simple things like plastic rings, fishing nets, and fishing line snare
and drown thousands of seals, sea lions, and dolphins each year, and while humans don t notice, it
seriously affects these marine animals (Hayden). Even though animals don t die when they first
ingest plastic, it makes it harder for them to consume other food that they need. In actuality,
scientists found that, Once plastics have been consumed, laboratory tests show that chemical
additives and adsorbed pollutants and metals on their surface can desorb (leach out) and transfer
into the guts and tissues of marine organisms (Seltenrich). This just makes it harder for animals to
eat, especially for the animals who need to feed their babies. Some of these animals starve to death;
other ones that are nursing babies transfer

Colic In Horses Essay
Colic in horses is a wide branching term that simply refers to any abdominal pain in horses. It is
the number one medical cause of death in horses and has a wide variety of causes. There are a
very wide variety of gastrointestinal conditions that can cause pain in the abdominal region and
for a horse to colic. About 10 % of horses colic at some point during their lives. One of the biggest
problems with colic is identifying early on if it is going to be life threatening or if it is a mild
form. It is very difficult to distinguish between the two. Colic has a wide array of signs and
symptoms but the causes are not as well known, so it is important to know preventative
measures one can do in order to avoid colic in their horse as well as have an understanding of the
horses delicate digestive system. Horses were evolved to constantly be grazing on grass
throughout the day. Today our horses are typically kept in stalls or paddock areas and fed two to
three times a day. While this is more economically efficient and as nutritionally... Show more

The first part where colic is predisposed is in the small intestine, the majority of the small intestine
hangs from a membrane called the mesentery. This membrane is attached to one point in the middle
of the abdomen, this can be visualized by the picture below. Excessive tension in the mesentery
causes abdominal pain and colic.
Another site that is predisposed to colic is the junction of the small and large intestine. This junction
is where the food passes from the foregut to the hindgut and food can easily impact at this joint.
Another part where colic can start is in the large intestine. The large intestine is only connected at
two points, at the beginning where it connects to the small intestine and at the end where it joins
the small colon and leads to the anus. Where the large intestine connects to the small colon is a

Thought experiment #2 Carley Hansbrough
As a future Chief Executive Officer there are several things I would want to strategize after
viewing the video concerning the financial economy. There is massive change that is going to hit
our economy. We have to prepare and create solutions to defeat disaster that is head towards us.
The Accelerated Crash Course presented by Chris Martenson, reviews three things in vast detail
concerning our natural inhabitants and our economic standing. These three things are: Economy,
energy, and environment. These three E s show how our world will soon be in a downturn. With
our global economy and many others suffering from major debt we are not able to achieve a logical
way to dissolve our own debt.
There are four parts that he discussed which make up the economy and that has brought us to the
changes that have occurred. Exponential profit growth in our economy has lost it value because
of the way many view the dollar bill today. There are many that see it as being readily available
and in our current state it is not. Exponential growth can be described as things that grow over time
such as stocks and bonds. Money can be described as an entitlement to something however, not
wealth. The perceived value of money will either have inflation or deflation. The amount of money
that is being created is causing the value of it to decrease. We must bring more value back to our
money system and this will cause growth throughout our economy. The

Self Reflection And Professional Development
In my journey of becoming a professional teacher, the main two events which took place in my life
were self reflection and professional development.
In my opinion, self reflection is to reflect back and think about what I have done in order to
develop myself. As it is written in the Collaborative website of the MCH Training Grantee
Network, self reflection is the way of evaluating the effect of our values, style of thinking and
communicating and experience. Also the process of self reflecting helps to develop people s
culture, skills and principles since these may affect the future actions and learning.
There are many benefits of self reflection. It helps teachers to give a clear picture of what they
have done before in their life. And what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As professional learning association in the year 2015 states, professional development is defined to
be the basic tool that education institutes can use to help the teaching staff continuously learn and
develop their skills and knowledge. According to Guskey. T, (2010), high quality professional
development is the major element in nearly every modern proposal for improving education,
The primary purpose of professional development is to prepare and support teachers by giving them
the knowledge and skills they need to help all students achieve high standards of learning and
development (U.S. Department of Education, 1996).
Professional development is not a one day job. It should be a continuous thing if teachers want to
become knowledgeable. In the early days, to refresh teachers, weekly workshops or seminars were
conducted which was not very effective. Now the trend has changed. It became a continuous
process. All the trainings that are carried out including course level ones are also known as
professional development. Teachers gain a lot of knowledge, training and experience from those

The Significance Of Ice Break By Astrid Blodgett
Ice Break is a short story, written by Astrid Blodgett in 2012. The story illustrates the importance
of choices, love and family. Moreover, it is a story that explores, whether destiny is a fundamental
and inevitable part of life or every day has a string of different possibilities and eventually is
defined through our decisions.
The story is told from a first person narrator, who is a middle child of three children named Dawn.
It is structured in two parallels, which illustrate two different times of the day until the end where
the second parallel that is earlier in the same day catches up with the story. Firstly, the story begins
right when the ice breaks when the father, Dawn and her younger sister, Janie, are driving on the
lake. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ice break is very literally present in the beginning and through the entire story and
metaphorically in the end of the story. Throughout the story the importance of the ice break is
illustrated by the worry and concern of the mother: She d already told him it was late in the season,
the ice might not be good... Moreover, it is exemplified in the desperation and panic the father
experiences when he is trying to save his daughters: Dad s not angry. He s frightened... Dad
shoves my shoulder through the gap in the door and out into the lake. Finally, the story shows the
consequences of the ice break that ultimately leads to the funeral of the father and youngest sister,
Janie: The funeral was on Thursday. Janie s face had make up all over... They even put make up
on Dad. In the end of the story the ice break can symbolize the cracks in the family that has been
left behind and especially the cracks in the mother s heart which shows the undeniable love that a
mother has for her children: I d seen her in Janie s room, holding a crumpled blue shirt of Janie s
up to her chest, then pulling it till it ripped and crying as though she was going to break open, right
down the middle, like the

GDP Problem Sets and International Economic Indicators
1. The accounting identity for GDP is as follows: C+I+G+X M=GDP Thus, we have the
following calculation: 1000 + 200 + 250+ 100 = 1550 2. The effect on the GDP of increasing
domestic energy production depends on what assumptions go into this. The easiest assumption
is that the increase in domestic production will result in an equivalent reduction in imports. This
would result in no net change to the GDP. However, with domestic production all of the value
that goes into that production would stay in the country, whereas with imports some of the
value of that production goes outside the country. For example, the cost of barrel of foreign oil
includes factors like shipping costs and producer markups that inflate the cost of the imports. In
all likelihood, domestic energy sources, if viable, would be most cost effective. Under that
assumption, M would decrease faster than I would increase. Thus, there would be a net gain to
the GDP from switching to domestic energy production. Inflation 1. 111/106 = 4.7% 2. 234/217
= 7.8% Unemployment 1. 2500 / 30,000 = 8.33% 2. 2500 / (30,000 500) = 8.47% Yield Curve
1.b.Maturity risk premiums. The increase in the yield for the bonds corresponds with the longer
maturities. Therefore, in all likelihood the premium reflects increased risk for bonds with a longer
time frame. 2. d. The default risk premium is added to all bonds, including US government bonds,

The Pros And Cons Of Dental Amalgams
Professor Kostelecky, before starting this paper I didn t have the slightest idea what an amalgam
was or why it causes so much controversy in the realm of dentistry. The controversy originates from
the material that primarily makes up amalgams; that material is mercury. Now that this debate has
commenced, dentists, scientists, and corporate organizations everywhere are arguing whether the
use of amalgams should be banned or should remain a growing practice. Because I plan to study
dentistryin the future I figured this would be a good topic to prepare me for my future education.
Before I discuss the three main points of view regarding amalgams, I want to give you some of
the basic background information. Dental amalgams are a type of filling used to fill cavities
caused by decay in the teeth. Amalgams are not the only type of filling offered by dentists;
composite resin, cast gold, ceramics, and glass ionomer are also used, but are not used near as
much. Amalgams are the most popular filling material and it has been this way since they were
first introduced back in the 1800 s. Each year billions of people invest in amalgams because they
are long lasting, cheap, and durable, but many researchers believe they could be detrimental to your
health due to the main ingredient mercury
Amalgams are a mixture of metals; 50% is composed of mercury and the other 50% is composed
of an alloy, which in this case, is silver copper and tin. The problem with using mercury in
amalgams is

Types Of Distributions Module 2
03 Types of Distributions Module 2 Slide 1: Welcome back! Congratulations for all the work
that you have done! While I m sure you are anxious to learn about the technique to answer
research questions and hypotheses, social workers and researchers need to understand the basic.
Think of your first bike ride. Did you need training wheels? Or did you need that gentle push
from a parent or relative? These were the foundations that prepared you for many years of
enjoyable bicycling! As stated in the previous powerpoints, it is important to analyze each variable,
especially our independent and dependent variables to determine the type of statistical techniques
to use in answer our research questions and/or hypotheses. One analysis that we perform on each
variable is the distribution of their scores. As with other powerpoints, this powerpoint supplements
your readings for the purpose of providing a better understanding of the module s concepts. Yet, it
does not replace the need for reading your textbook. Additionally, embedded in the powerpoint are
questions to test your assimilation of these concepts. So, let s begin. Slide 2: As humans, we
acquire knowledge with visual applications or pictures. After looking at picture or graph, we can
instantly interpret its meaning. Frequency polygons convey pictures of different shapes of
distributions for interval and ratio level variables only and enhances our understanding of central
tendency and dispersion, concepts that we discussed

Descriptive Essay About Coffee
The bell dings as I open the door to my favorite cafe: Nola. Notorious for their extra strong coffee
and their large selection of teas, I come here a few times a week with my laptop to get work
done. I walk in and smile at the waitress with the tattoos and blue hair. The tall wooden tables and
funky wall art have become familiar to me. I walk up to the coffeebar to order my drink, and as I
stare at the choices, I get lost in thought. I m not sure why I look at the menu anymore, as I already
know what my options are. Ma am? The barista gets my attention, and I come back to reality.
Coffee, or tea? she asks me. I m never sure which one to choose. I finally decide on a large peach
iced tea, because today I m feeling more summery than usual. I walk back to my table, and ponder
my decision. The choice between coffee and tea isn t ever an easy one for me, and often there s no
rhyme or reason behind what I choose. Each drink means something different to me.
I ve always loved tea. I started drinking it after watching my mom have a cup every morning. My
first cup of tea was an English breakfast blend with so much milk and sugar it wasn t really tea

Essay on The Origin of Baseball
The Origin of Baseball
There is often disagreement about the origin of baseball. For more than 90 years, people have
believed in the myth that Abner Doubleday invented baseball. Baseball developed slowly, and
changed with time, and that is why it is called America s national pastime. Some believe it was a
popular game from England where milkmaids and farmer hands would toss a softball underhand
and hit it with a closed fist. Others even say it was evolved from cricket. From 1905 07, a special
investigation was done to find the beginning of baseball. An old man, claiming to be one of Abner
Doubleday s childhood s friend, swore that he invented baseball in 1839, in Cooperstown, New
York (Stewart 5). The fact of the matter is Doubleday... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In New York City, a group of young men decided to make the game of rounders more suitable for
adults. There have been records that indicate the game called base ball was played in what is now
considered to be lower midtown Manhattan in 1842. On September 23, 1845, the
Knickerbocker Base Ball Club baseball s first team was formed in New York City. There was no
other baseball club that was more influential than the Knickerbockers. Its founder was a bank
clerk named Alexander J. Cartwright, and the co founder, Dr. Daniel Adams. The
Knickerbockers adopted baseball s first uniform, which consisted of blue pants, white shirts and
straw hats. Cartwright and Adams were responsible for coming up with some of the rules of
baseball, although they have been changed. November 18, 1853 there was a meeting held to
decide who should be on the committee to make all the rules. Dr. Adams, Abraham Tucker, and
Duncan Curry were among the ones that were chosen (Stewart, 6 7). They made up 17 rules,
which were: the bases should be home, to second base, 42 paces; and from first to third base, 42
paces, halfway; and from home to pitcher not less than 15 paces. The game is to consist of 21

to the bat. A ball knocked outside the range of the first or third base is foul. Three balls being

Sustainability and Urban Development
Sustainability and Development
Introduction
Sustainable development and sustainability have been the focus of many researchers in various
disciplines for quite some time now. The current distribution of natural resources and their
allocation is modeled on an infinite growth assumption. The mainstream economic perspective
assumes that the market will allocate resources in the most efficient way possible. Yet there are
many externalities that often left out of this model such as clean air, clean water, and the carrying
capacity of the Earth s natural systems. For example, when someone used oil as a source of fuel,
the pollution from its use is not counted in the standard economic perspective. Furthermore, the fact
that oil is a nonrenewable resource is also not effectively included in these models.
Sustainable development incorporates various social and economic objectives that try to
optimize the use of natural resources in the society. It is a broad topic but is centered on trying to
make the most efficient use of the resources that are available while also ensuring that there are
resources available for future generations. The main objective of sustainable development is to
achieve a reasonable and equitable distribution of resources that can offer a high level of well
being for all generations; those that are currently alive and those are yet to be born. In order to
achieve sustainability, the society and the planet as a whole has to have the regenerative ability to

they are being treated is. Many animals of different species sit in cages of research facilities,

Ultimately, P P computers can gain a competitive advantage through understanding the desires and
needs of their loyal customer base. Furthermore, this project will also use association rules within
customer segments to predict what items are most likely to be purchased together thus informing
future business decisions. Background: Loyalty programmes have rapidly proliferated in almost
all consumer focussed industries. In the United States alone, explicit opt in programme
memberships topped 2.6 billion in 2012 (IIDA, 2014). The vast amount of transactional and
demographic data gathered from loyalty programmes has been used by many organisations to
drive business decisions. The use of supervised and unsupervised learning has been used to gather
different information about customer desires, trends and loyalty. There are two primary modelling
approaches, they are recency, frequency and monetary (RFM) model and the customer life value
model (CLV). The RFM model focusses on three key metrics; how recently a customer has
purchased, how often they purchase and how much money they spend. On the other hand, the CLV
model attempts to predict the amount of money a customer will spend with the company from
present day till the time the business relationship is terminated. Gupta et al (2006) indicate that the
main limitation to RFM models is that they use a scoring system and do not provide a specific
dollar value. However, there are successful cases where an RFM model was

Social Movements Of Palestine And Palestine
In the 1990s there began a significant shift in social movements in Israel and Palestine. The
history of this region has been marked by violence, inequality, and oppression for a long time.
The complicated relationships between the two main powers in this area have developed over
time and a variety of groups on both sides of the conflict have reacted with by calling for peace.
The first intifada had a huge impact on who had the ablity to voice their concerns to fight the
injustices occurring in this region. It was during this popular uprising that women s movements
first began to gain traction in both Israeland Palestine. These movements were often defined by
traditional and constricting ideals of femininity, however over time they began to branch out with a
more grassroots approach. Women s movements in Israel have many similarities to those in
Palestine and the Occupied Territories, however there are some significant differences that separate
the women involved in each of these groups and the causes they choose to support. Genderequality
is a complex issue with many implications for the modern peace movement in Israel and
Palestine, and it is crucial to note both the ways in which these groups face similar challenges
while also acknowledging the very different issues faced by Israeli and Palestinian women.
Especially in the period following the first intifada there was a growing presence of women s

President Hindenburg s Influence On The Rise Of Power
President Hindenburg was one of many contributing factors to Hitler s rise to power. Power is the
capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events. President
Hindenburg passed on a role in government to Hitler, but Hindenburg took the risk and didn t know
what he was in for. The argument produced is about the importance of President Hindenburg s
actions, what effect the Great Depression made on Hitler s rise to power and the long term
resentment about the Treaty of Versailles.
The Treaty of Versailles which was established after World War One, contributed to the
embarrassment and humiliation Germany was faced with. Land and Military were lost, but most
of all respect from the German population . At this stage Germany became remote and the only
person German people had hope in was Hitler. To the German community Hitler was their
ultimate saviour . The combined actions provided rich material for Hitler to use in supporting
him in the rise of power. The Treaty also started a process where the German economy was
rebuilt bases around the loans led by the US . This made the nation especially weak when the
Great Depression came. The German economy fell soon after due to invasion from the French as
it was impossible for Germany to pay the reparations. The German currency lost its value and this
was the start to the middle classes falling into poverty . In 1924 the crisis was ended by the Dawes

much of a difference there is between their social classes. Dexter realizes he will never be able to
marry her and eventually becomes engaged, but that falls apart, and by age thirty two Dexter
becomes more successful than ever before. A business associate of his notifies him that his love
Judy has since married and was in a disaster of a relationship. The Garden Party takes place in
early in the 20th century at the estate of a wealthy family in New Zealand. It was interesting
story in the way that it portrayed the upper class in a not so fashionable way. In the story, Laura

Reactivities Of Some Alkyl Halides
Karen Dennie
Professor Tjandra
Chemistry 75A
Due: November 18, 2013
Experiment 20: Reactivities of Some Alkyl Halides
Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to examine the reactivities of various alkyl halides
under both SN2 and SN1 reaction conditions. The alkyl halides will be examined based on the
substrate types and solvent the reaction takes place in.
Procedure: For the first part of this experiment, six dry test tubes were obtained and labeled
accordingly to test the following halides: 2 chlorobutane, 2 bromobutane, 1 chlorobutane, 1
bromobutane, 2 chloro 2 methylpropane, and bromobenzene. To each of the six test tubes 2ml
of 15% sodium iodide in acetone was added. 4 drops of the appropriate halide was added to the
test tube labeled for that specific halide. After adding the halide, the test tube was then shaken to
mix thoroughly. If a precipitate formed the time it took was recorded. Since none of the solutions
formed a precipitate at room temperature after five minutes, the test tubes were placed inside of a
hot bath at about 50В°C. After one minute, the test tubes were taken out of the hot bath and
allowed to cool. If any test tubes formed a precipitate, the time it took was recorded on a table. For
the second part of the experiment, again six dry test tubes were obtained and labeled accordingly to
test the following halides: 2 chlorobutane, 2 bromobutane, 1 chlorobutane, 1 bromobutane, 2 chloro
2 methylpropane, and bromobenzene. To each of the six

Layoff Precautions
According to Davis (n.d.), the very important first step for a business owner or human resource
manager to lay off people is deciding on whom should be laid off. There are several legal reasons
to terminate an employee. The first group to consider is individuals that have poor performances,
which include lack of punctuality, attendance, or failure to produce desired outcomes. Higher
salaried employees can also be replaced when it comes to layoffs. Other individuals should be
terminated are those who resist to company innovation, be insubordination, negativism, or ethical
lapses and do not conform to company values. Some precautions should be considered while
execute the process of layoff. The manager who conduct the layoff should not express his or her
emotional feelings or threaten the terminated employee. The manager should not promise to rehire
the employee at a later date, just to make that employee feel better. It might set the expectation for
the terminated employee. If the employee will not be rehired, the company might face a legal issue
for not keeping the promise. The company should be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It might end up costs more to the company. Another issue that is not related to financial crunched,
is the safety of the remaining staffs. There were so many shooting cases in workplaces have been
reported in the past years after layoffs. Layoff might mean the end of the world to the employees
end of regular income and probably the termination of medical benefits, and a retirement saving.
For the business owner, it could mean terminating trusted, well performing workers in a desperate
means to reduce the expenses. The end result can be devastating to both the owner and the
terminated employee. Layoff might not be the best solution for a company to cut down on costs.
Why a company has to choose layoff to resolve their financial

The Mexican-American War
New Mexico was just a dry desert owned by Mexico. The people in New Mexico were treated badly
and not given the food, water, or money needed to survive. New Mexico was stopped from
expanding and becoming something great. The, what is now a great state, used to just be a poorly
populated desert. The Mexican American War was hope for the people of New Mexico. The war
could save them, the war could give New Mexicothe freedom that it wanted and deserved. The
Mexican American War gave hope to New Mexico and changed New Mexico forever.
The Mexican American War was a tremendous war that started on April 25, 1846 and ended on
February 2, 1848. The war greatly affected both Mexico and the United States. The war affected

What Is Imperialism In Things Fall Apart
As a simply written novel with an incredibly complex theme, Things Fall Apart gives readers a
touch of cultural shock which manages to leave them unwilling to return home after the last page.
Chinua Achebe, the author, bases the plot around the experiences his people group has with
imperialism and uses events throughout the story to prove his opinion on this controversial
occurrence in history. The tale centers around Okonkwo, an Ibo man determined to stay traditional,
which becomes problematic when Europeans begin to take over African tribes and reorganize their
governments. This experience exhibits imperialism, which most know of as the policy of extending
the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring... Show more

As a way for clansmen to solve problems among themselves, this judgment is vital to the
continuous survival of the Ibo people. The Ibo people s ancestors run the court, with masks to
hide their true identities and keep the illusion real to naive clansmen. Each egwugwu represents
one of the nine villages of the clan, and all gather prior to the tribunal in a hut exclusive to
members of the esoteric cult. Outside the private hut lies the ilo, the village green, where the
Ibo hold these courts and the crowd gathers around the opposing parties and the stools specified
for the elders to watch. The organization and work behind such an procedure supports the Ibo s
civility in that citizens are using their time to settle issues that others have and work together to
solve problems that may not even involve them. When a culture cooperates to achieve peace, it
proves that their relationships with each other are healthy and without any bonds between
citizens to hold a culture together, there will undoubtedly be separation which leads to falling
apart. The fact that the Ibo do this supports their civility and that they do not need imperialism.
Further evidence is provided when Evil Forest, the leader of the egwugwu, states We have heard
both sides of the case... our duty is not to blame this man or to praise that, but to settle the
dispute (93.) When a court hears both sides of a case, it proves that they value equality which is
a key quality in a civilized society as it allows everyone in the clan to be treated the same and that
prevents displeasure which could lead to a clan s destruction. Thus a judicial system becomes
necessary to an established tribe and the fact that the Ibo people have one supports the claim of
their civility and that they do not need

Essay on Solving HealthCare’s eMail Security Problem
Solving HealthCare s eMail Security Problem
Abstract
While healthcare organizations have come to depend heavily on electronic mail, they do so without
a significant email security infrastructure. New Federal law and regulation place new obligations on
the organizations to either secure their email systems or drastically restrict their use. This paper
discusses email security in a healthcare context. The paper considers and recommends solutions to
the healthcare organization s problem in securing its mail. Because email encryption will soon be a
categorical requirement for healthcare organizations, email encryption is discussed in some detail.
The paper describes details and benefits of domain level encryption model and considers how PKI

Although these security standards have not yet been finalized, in August of 1998, HHS did
publish in 45 CFR Part 142 a proposal for that Security Standard. That Notice of
Proposed Rule Making did include a number of specific security implementation features.
Particularly relevant to email use is a specification for encryption of health information
communicated over any network for which the transmitter cannot control access (45 CFR Part
142.308[d][1][ii]). This restriction clearly is intended to apply to the healthcare organization s
Internet bound electronic mail.
This paper broadly outlines steps that healthcare organizations can take to ensure the security of
their electronic mail use. A substantial portion of this activity has a Security
101 aspect to it. Healthcare organizations are generally exposed to the same Internet borne threats
as any other type organization. As a result, healthcare organizations do well to follow the general
recommendations for email security provided in documents such as NIST s Guidelines for
Electronic Mail Security . Healthcare organizations do have business imperatives and legal
obligations, however, that may encumber routine application of email security best practice.
Therefore, this paper will provide a healthcare industry context to its discussion of electronic mail
security.
Risks Associated with Electronic Mail Use
Generally speaking there are three classes of email related risk that

Disadvantages Of Automatic Telegraphs
The telegraph was what knocked the electric pen off of its Seaver 5 feet. Automatic telegraphs
used machinery to transmit messages at higher speeds than those sent and received by Morse
telegraph operators. Hand operators averaged 25 40 words per minute while the transmission
speeds of automatic telegraphs ranged from 60 120 words per minute for the ink recording
automatic telegraphs used in England to 500 1000 words per minute for Edison s chemical
recording system. However, even though transmission speeds were much higher with automatic
telegraphs, individual messages took longer to prepare for transmission and delivery. Automatic
telegraphs were most economical for long messages, such as the news reports sent by the
Associated Press. The more common short business and personal messages sent by telegraph
were transmitted more economically by hand operators, because they could send the message
from the original form submitted by the customer, and they translated the Morse code directly
into a final message as they received it. Automatic messages needed to be translated into
perforated tape before they could be run through a transmitter, and at the other end, the message
had to transcribed from the recorded Morse code before it could be delivered to the customer.
Edison worked on automatic telegraphs between 1870 and 1874. He first developed an improved
perforator with a keyboard similar to that of a typewriter that operated at about 35 words

Neighborly Relations Has Decline In The United States...
According to the Chicago Tribune, Neighborly relations have declined in the U.S. since the
1950s. Some 28 percent of us know none of our neighbors names, particularly pervasive among
younger and lower income people, (Mildenstein). Why is it that our society has become less
neighborly? In our society today, people are caught up in themselves and do not like to connect
personally or physically with their neighbors. Because of this, they do not take the time out of
their day to meet or socialize with their neighbors. Since the 1950s, our societies values and
morals have changed dramatically. We now have the whole world at our fingertips, and feel like
we do not need the physical presence of people in our lives. Consequently, good neighbors have
become extremely hard to come by. However, when ones neighbor is cordial, cooperative, and

Art Museum
The very first time I ever went to an art museum, I was miserable. I was ten years old, and
visiting New York City for the first time, and my father who has worked tirelessly to raise my
siblings and me to have an appreciation for higher culture dragged us to the Metropolitan Museum
of Art. I cried within fifteen minutes of being there. All the people made me feel claustrophobic,
and I was so set in my misery that I refused to try to enjoy the art. My mother, with all the patience
that mothers are gifted with, took me through the museum. She entertained me with stories of when
her and my father first fell in love in the city; rushed lunch dates in the museum, the halfway point
between his job and her school. Gradually, we moved away from the more heavily populated
galleries, and then it happened.
I saw the art.

As I grew older I realized that I wanted to give everyone, but especially children, the same access
to art that I had been so privileged to have throughout my childhood. I felt, and still feel, that art
serves as a reflection of the culture we live in, and if access to art is limited then the creation of
art will also be stifled, leading to only a select few voices being recognized. If only a few voices
are recognized, then a true reflection of our culture will not be generated. Historically, wealthy
white men have dominated the art world, specifically the western art world, and I believe that
because of this bias we have missed out on many important stories from diverse backgrounds.
While we cannot change the past, it is never too late to start working towards a brighter, more
inclusive future. The first step towards this vision is by increasing the accessibility of art
education to people from all backgrounds. Art changed my life, and I believe it can change the
lives of countless

The Portrayal Of Postpartum Depression
The Portrayal of Postpartum Depression in The Yellow Wallpaper
The Yellow wallpaper is a story about a woman going through a mental breakdown. She has
recently had a baby and is suffering from postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis.
Charlotte portrays postpartum depression very accurately in the story The Yellow Wallpaper. She
writes about how others do not understand her needs and how they will not listen to what she wants
to say. Postpartum depression is a serious form of depression that affects not only the person
experiencing it but the others around them as well. Women everywhere suffer from this form of
depression. These women are going through something very serious and need as much support as
they can get. Charlotte ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An article on postpartum depression states 70 to 80 percent of women who have given birth
experience what are called the baby blues or the fourth day blues (Postpartum Depression). The
baby blues and fourth day blues have symptoms of mood swings, unhappiness, anxiety, irritability,
or restlessness and these symptoms will often go away or lessen without medical intervention
(Postpartum Depression). If someone experiences these symptoms they are not automatically
classified with having PPD.
The definition of postpartum depression is A physical and emotional condition that may be life
threatening, involving the symptoms of depression occurring from a month to a year following
childbirth and thought to be caused in part to dramatic hormonal shifts occurring in conjunction
with childbirth (Postpartum Depression). Indications of postpartum depression include sorrow,
insomnia, periodic crying, irritability, lack of energy and motivation, diminished feelings of self
worth, restlessness, guilt, unexplained weight changes, irrational fears and being overwhelmed.
There is a difference between postpartum depression and just having the baby blues . Postpartum
depression is severe and lasts for a longer amount of time compared to the baby blues . The baby
blues will not affect how you care for your child. Postpartum depression interferes with the mother
s ability to care for herself and her child.

Okonkwo Bad Father

Things Fall Apart: Effects of Bad Parenting Fathers play an influential role in the lives of their
children by shaping their personalities. This is evident in the characters Unoka, Okonkwo, and
Nwoye who are grandfather, father, and son respectively. The fathers, Unoka and Okonkwo, create
opposing personalities in their sons. In Things Fall Apart, the father son relationships throughout
three generations influence Okonkwo and Nwoye to differentiate from their fathers. Unoka
symbolizes failure in Okonkwo s perspective, causing Okonkwo to strive to differentiate from him.

(Achebe 66). Okonkwo sees Nwoye as weak and not masculine, encouraging him to seek to solve
this. Okonkwo solves this by correcting him by constant naggings and beating (Achebe 13).
Okonkwo attempts to make Nwoye become more masculine but these actions are counterintuitive.
It makes Nwoye, seeking acceptance, turn to Christianity. According to the critic Solomon

responding to these basic human needs; he considered them unmanly and effeminate. When
Okonkwo is confronted by the failure of his own rigid code as Nwoye turns to Christianity for
love and succor (Iyasere 1). Nwoye seeks love and acceptance and Okonkwo doesn t realize this.
His unacceptance causes Nwoye to turn to Christianity to praise his lack of masculinity. Nwoye

Ethical Issues In Counseling
The American Counseling Association was established in the mid 1900 s. It is an organization that

knowledge about counselingas well as suggested membership to the various divisional organizations
associated with ACA. While browsing through the website, I found many surprising facts in

advocate. The American Counseling Association has various divisions/organizations that are very
informative and beneficial for counselor or students pursuing a counseling career. There are some
interesting facts about these divisions I researched. Becoming a member of ACA and a division
are extremely beneficial. Even though some counselors are viewed as though they have no issues
whether financially or mentally, all of these benefits prove this view wrong. Members of ACA are
given great discounts on everyday life needs such as different insurances. There are other ways to
save once you become a member. I found this to be intriguing because it shows that counselors need
help as well. Other benefits such as continued education, networking, and activities for advocating
certain divisions of ACA are available. The American Counselor Association website again is very
beneficial, it is essential that counselor spread the word about this organization to other counselors,
students, or even those who are

  • 2. Mastreatment And Physical Abuse In The Movie Precious In the film Precious, this movie discuses a lot of maltreatment and physical abuse. This movie is by far one of the worse because it deals with mistreatment and negative talk on an innocent teenager who wants to be all that she can be, but she is insulted and told differently. Although it may be a bad movie, I always hope that this will inspire other people like Precious to speak out on what they are going through. There is a lot of drugs being used in the home and just plain out disrespect. Claireece Precious Jones who is 16 years old grew up in Harlem during the late 1980s. All of the poor and dirty crime that happens, none of which affects Precious as much as the constant mistreatment she receives at the hands of her brutally vile mother Mary. Precious is treated as a slave, fixing food, washing dishes, and tending to her wretched master as the worthless woman smokes, collects welfare, and watches TV. Precious lives a life that involves many sociological issues that have unarguably caused her great pain throughout her young life. Having endured poverty, sexual abuse, and verbal abuse her life has been far from perfect, but she realizes the need to defeat these negative sociological factors to achieve a life that seems to her as only a fantasy. During school, Precious tries very hard to blend into the background; she dreams of being normal, gracing the covers of magazines, and sporting an arm candy boyfriend. The feeling that I felt when I watched this movie breaks my heart because there are people in this world that are indeed treated like this and this is very sad. It s very tough for teens and children to go through life hurting and crying out for help. This is what Precious face. Perhaps the most affecting element of the film is Precious refusal to demand sympathy. The movie tells the story of Precious being abused and mistreated as a teenager, out of the apartment of cigarette smoke and pig s feet and bed springs and casual cruelty and into the world of unimagined possibilities. She s aided on the journey by a literacy teacher Ms. Rain, into whose hands she falls after being expelled out of school and a social worker who digs up her history of abuse. This movie was very depressing to watch. When it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Shlieffen Plan World War I was a devastating war that was mainly Britain, Russia, France, and the US against Austria Hungary, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire. Throughout the entire war, many different strategies and tactics were used by the /parties. Some were genius and some were absolute failures. There were a multitude of goals different powers wanted, and each one took unique approaches to achieve said goals. One of the first plans of WWI was developed almost a decade before the war actually took place. The Schlieffen Plan, which Alfred von Schlieffen, Chief of the Imperial German General Staff, based off of Hannibal s tactic 2000 years earlier, consisted of Germany taking France out at the start of the war. That way, Britain and Russia couldn t continue... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Danilov argued that on the outbreak of war in Europe the German Army would concentrate its forces against France. Danilov therefore suggested that four of its armies should immediately invade East Prussia. In 1912 it was decided to heavily alter Plan 19. Only two armies were now to attack East Prussia with the rest concentrating on defending Russia from the Austro Hungarian Army. Now the way soldiers attacked in WWI is interesting. Military actions designed to take control of enemy trenches were called attacks or offensives. The difference between attacks and offensives are an attack usually involved a division (16,000 men) while an offensive was bigger and would use at least one corps. The main objective of an attack was to break the enemy line, but an offensive was an attempt to occupy any positions that were taken during the operation. This meant that consistent fighting raised serious problems of running out of supplies. Before attacks and offensives took place, heavy artillery was used to soften up the enemy trenches. At the offensive at the Somme in the summer of 1916 General Douglas Haig ordered an eight day preliminary bombardment before sending 750,000 men (27 divisions) to attack the German ... The professional athletes are initiated into a culture of partying, bling, new cars, new houses, and new followers. Along with their careers as an athlete, they instantly sign contracts making them millionaires over night. The majority of athletes come from backgrounds of poverty and rural areas, making them untrained on how to handle finances. NFL players are given both briefings on ways to financetheir money and agents willing to handle their bank accounts. Because the players hire agents to manage their funds, the athletes no longer see or feel the need to attend meetings on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One problem NFL players face is learning how to budget their money. Once they get drafted into the NFL they receive large salaries that dramatically alter their lives. The average professional athlete in the U.S. makes more than most people earn throughout their lives (MunKNEE). Receiving such large salaries changes both the way people live their lives and how they spend their money. Suddenly they have the capability to buy expensive cars, fancy clothes, and buy out clubs for a night. The majority of professional football players spend large amounts of money on items that show off their wealth, so once new players join the league they feel the pressure to match up to the others. Scott Bercu, a financial accountant for NFL players, agrees that athletes spend their money like crazy. He sees players earn a $5 million dollar salary, but by the time they pay their agent and taxes they are left with only $2 million. The rate at which these players spend their money does not match up to their $2 million dollars left in the bank (MunKNEE). Even though these players make large salaries, they are not in the business for many years. The average career span of NFL players is 3.5 years (MunKNEE). They have a short amount of time to make there millions in order to live after their career, but if they don t make there millions fast and learn how to save it then they will not survive. Overspending and becoming wrapped up in the glamorous life is too ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the article Why Do Lutherans Sing? Lutherans, Music, and the Gospel in the First Century of the Reformation , J. Andreas Loewe discusses Luther s use of music to spread the Gospel, and his influence on music in the Lutheran Church at the beginning of the Reformation. This was particularly effective in reaching people due to the varying literacy levels among the people. When the message was sung, it was often about Reformation principles, however he also used them to comment on the current times. One of his first hymns, Ein Newes Lied , was written in response to the martyrdom of two young men who were considered lutherans by the Catholic Church. All of these hymns were spread through word of mouth, letter, and broadsheet, even through areas that were still solidly Catholic. Their inclusion into the Protestant worship service was a mark of profound change for the church. They were regularly sung before the service multiple times, even before Catholic services. This caused such a disturbance in the Catholic Church that the primary distributor of the hymns was imprisoned, however this in turn caused such an uproar that six to eight hundred people gathered to forcefully free the peddler. Feminine Soul In The Host In the opening of the novel, The Host (Meyer, 2010), the protagonist, a feminine soul, who comes to be named Wanderer, has been placed in the body of Melanie, a twenty year old female rebel who was caught as she tried to reunite with her still human cousin, Sharon. Melanie, rather than be caught by the parasites threw herself down an elevator shaft to escape the Seeker souls, encased in humanbodies, who were chasing her (Meyer, 2010, p. 12). Melanie is one of an unknown number of remaining humanswho have so far eluded being inserted with an alien soul during the past few years of alien occupation on Earth (p. 18). As a result, the social environment on Earth has become much less violent. As Wanda (short for Wanderer) says, No one could compare what had been and what was now and not admit that Earth was better thanks to us (Meyer, 2010, p. 60). In fact, soul infected humans began being so kind to one another that the remaining humans knew that something was changing. Keeping with the dystopian genre framework there has been a cataclysmic change on Earth through this alien invasion. Those humans who have not had an alien inserted into their brain now have to hide their existence from the souls Seekers who are less bothered by the use of violence than the other peace loving souls. Wanda and other souls see this as a sign that a Seeker is a lesser individual and that only the least civilized souls, the least evolved, the lesser among us, would be drawn to the path of Seeker (p. 22). However, on Earth, unlike on other planets where occupation was relatively easy, humans have proven to be resistant to becoming hosts and the occupation has gone awry and has turned into a fierce and bloody battle (p. 22). Therefore, the Seekers have had a greater influence on the occupation as they hunt down and capture humans such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Comparing Erich Fromm s Disobedience As A Psychological... Erich Fromm wrote Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem, in 1963, an essay detailing balance between obedience and disobedience. Fromm cited that authority figures insisted obedience as a virtue and disobedience as a vice. He argued that disobedience began human history itself and necessary to continue it. Fromm first discussed a Biblical example: the story of Adam and Eve. Humans were in harmony with nature, yet still in their infancy. Prophets argued it is through man s sin can reason and love developed, and men become human. Only through disobedience were they able to grow into individuals and independence. Fromm drew onto the Greek myth of Prometheus as another source of evolution through disobedience. Prometheus theft of fire from the gods laid down the foundations for civilization. Both examples have mankind s history begin with disobedience. The capacity of disobedience allows humans to evolve. Fromm argues that if disobedience began history, then obedience will end it. While humankind s capability is great, it outpaces rational and humanistic ideals. Destruction will come through obeying amoral thoughts; commands from higher authority and archaic passions of fear, hate, and greed (p. 684, 11th ed.). Fromm clarifies that obedience or disobedience is not a single value system. The principles that guide in obedience or disobedience may be either good or bad. If an individual is completely obedient, then they are a slave; if they are completely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Pardoner from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales Essay The Pardoner from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales In Chaucer s Canterbury Tales, The Pardoner tells a story in the form of a sermon, an exemplum, to be exact. He intends to teach the congregation that love of money is the root of all evil and that consequences of sin is death. The symbolic function of The Old Man is debatable; is he, for instance Death s messenger , Death himself, or a satanic figure who tempts, much in the fashion of the Devil as serpent in the Adam and Ever story. Based on current estimates, oil and natural gas will peak by 2040. In addition, over the past 50 years, the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history (MacMillan Para 1). The United States needs to figure out a way to fulfill their massive demand for power while ensuring the safety of the planet. There are many possible ways to attack the problem at hand. The first proposal is to mandate the installment of solar rooftop units throughout the country. Another proposal is to install solar parks throughout the country. A final proposal is to simply incentivize the use and development of solar energy while phasing out fossil fuels. By implementing one of these three proposals, the United States government could help solve a problem that looms over the entire population. The major problem solar energy will look to fix is global warming. Global warming is the gradual increase of the average global temperature. This rise in heat is caused by the greenhouse effect, which is the warming that happens when certain gases in Earth s atmosphere trap heat. These gases let in light but keep heat from escaping, like the glass walls of a greenhouse (What is Global Warming Para 4). This process is natural and keeps Earth at an inhabitable temperature. With the increasing amount of this plastic trash, the death toll of these animals will continue to rise and will not fall until humans decide to take action. Simple things like plastic rings, fishing nets, and fishing line snare and drown thousands of seals, sea lions, and dolphins each year, and while humans don t notice, it seriously affects these marine animals (Hayden). Even though animals don t die when they first ingest plastic, it makes it harder for them to consume other food that they need. In actuality, scientists found that, Once plastics have been consumed, laboratory tests show that chemical additives and adsorbed pollutants and metals on their surface can desorb (leach out) and transfer into the guts and tissues of marine organisms (Seltenrich). There is massive change that is going to hit our economy. We have to prepare and create solutions to defeat disaster that is head towards us. The Accelerated Crash Course presented by Chris Martenson, reviews three things in vast detail concerning our natural inhabitants and our economic standing. These three things are: Economy, energy, and environment. These three E s show how our world will soon be in a downturn. With our global economy and many others suffering from major debt we are not able to achieve a logical way to dissolve our own debt. There are four parts that he discussed which make up the economy and that has brought us to the changes that have occurred. Exponential profit growth in our economy has lost it value because of the way many view the dollar bill today. There are many that see it as being readily available and in our current state it is not. Exponential growth can be described as things that grow over time such as stocks and bonds. Money can be described as an entitlement to something however, not wealth. The perceived value of money will either have inflation or deflation. The amount of money that is being created is causing the value of it to decrease. We must bring more value back to our money system and this will cause growth throughout our economy. The ... The effect on the GDP of increasing domestic energy production depends on what assumptions go into this. The easiest assumption is that the increase in domestic production will result in an equivalent reduction in imports. This would result in no net change to the GDP. However, with domestic production all of the value that goes into that production would stay in the country, whereas with imports some of the value of that production goes outside the country. For example, the cost of barrel of foreign oil includes factors like shipping costs and producer markups that inflate the cost of the imports. In all likelihood, domestic energy sources, if viable, would be most cost effective. Under that assumption, M would decrease faster than I would increase. Thus, there would be a net gain to the GDP from switching to domestic energy production. • 31. Essay on The Origin of Baseball The Origin of Baseball There is often disagreement about the origin of baseball. For more than 90 years, people have believed in the myth that Abner Doubleday invented baseball. Baseball developed slowly, and changed with time, and that is why it is called America s national pastime. Some believe it was a popular game from England where milkmaids and farmer hands would toss a softball underhand and hit it with a closed fist. Others even say it was evolved from cricket. From 1905 07, a special investigation was done to find the beginning of baseball. An old man, claiming to be one of Abner Doubleday s childhood s friend, swore that he invented baseball in 1839, in Cooperstown, New York (Stewart 5). The fact of the matter is Doubleday... There have been records that indicate the game called base ball was played in what is now considered to be lower midtown Manhattan in 1842. On September 23, 1845, the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club baseball s first team was formed in New York City. There was no other baseball club that was more influential than the Knickerbockers. Its founder was a bank clerk named Alexander J. Cartwright, and the co founder, Dr. Daniel Adams. The Knickerbockers adopted baseball s first uniform, which consisted of blue pants, white shirts and straw hats. Cartwright and Adams were responsible for coming up with some of the rules of baseball, although they have been changed. November 18, 1853 there was a meeting held to decide who should be on the committee to make all the rules. Dr. Adams, Abraham Tucker, and Duncan Curry were among the ones that were chosen (Stewart, 6 7). They made up 17 rules, which were: the bases should be home, to second base, 42 paces; and from first to third base, 42 paces, halfway; and from home to pitcher not less than 15 paces. The game is to consist of 21 counts or aces, but at the end an equal number of hands must be played. The ball must be pitched to the bat. • 33. Sustainability and Urban Development Sustainability and Development Introduction Sustainable development and sustainability have been the focus of many researchers in various disciplines for quite some time now. The current distribution of natural resources and their allocation is modeled on an infinite growth assumption. The mainstream economic perspective assumes that the market will allocate resources in the most efficient way possible. Yet there are many externalities that often left out of this model such as clean air, clean water, and the carrying capacity of the Earth s natural systems. For example, when someone used oil as a source of fuel, the pollution from its use is not counted in the standard economic perspective. Furthermore, the fact that oil is a nonrenewable resource is also not effectively included in these models. Sustainable development incorporates various social and economic objectives that try to optimize the use of natural resources in the society. It is a broad topic but is centered on trying to make the most efficient use of the resources that are available while also ensuring that there are resources available for future generations. The main objective of sustainable development is to achieve a reasonable and equitable distribution of resources that can offer a high level of well being for all generations; those that are currently alive and those are yet to be born. In the United States alone, explicit opt in programme memberships topped 2.6 billion in 2012 (IIDA, 2014). The vast amount of transactional and demographic data gathered from loyalty programmes has been used by many organisations to drive business decisions. The use of supervised and unsupervised learning has been used to gather different information about customer desires, trends and loyalty. There are two primary modelling approaches, they are recency, frequency and monetary (RFM) model and the customer life value model (CLV). The RFM model focusses on three key metrics; how recently a customer has purchased, how often they purchase and how much money they spend. On the other hand, the CLV model attempts to predict the amount of money a customer will spend with the company from present day till the time the business relationship is terminated. The argument produced is about the importance of President Hindenburg s actions, what effect the Great Depression made on Hitler s rise to power and the long term resentment about the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty of Versailles which was established after World War One, contributed to the embarrassment and humiliation Germany was faced with. Land and Military were lost, but most of all respect from the German population . At this stage Germany became remote and the only person German people had hope in was Hitler. To the German community Hitler was their ultimate saviour . The combined actions provided rich material for Hitler to use in supporting him in the rise of power. The Treaty also started a process where the German economy was rebuilt bases around the loans led by the US . This made the nation especially weak when the Great Depression came. The alkyl halides will be examined based on the substrate types and solvent the reaction takes place in. Procedure: For the first part of this experiment, six dry test tubes were obtained and labeled accordingly to test the following halides: 2 chlorobutane, 2 bromobutane, 1 chlorobutane, 1 bromobutane, 2 chloro 2 methylpropane, and bromobenzene. To each of the six test tubes 2ml of 15% sodium iodide in acetone was added. 4 drops of the appropriate halide was added to the test tube labeled for that specific halide. After adding the halide, the test tube was then shaken to mix thoroughly. If a precipitate formed the time it took was recorded. Since none of the solutions formed a precipitate at room temperature after five minutes, the test tubes were placed inside of a hot bath at about 50В°C. After one minute, the test tubes were taken out of the hot bath and allowed to cool. If any test tubes formed a precipitate, the time it took was recorded on a table. The tale centers around Okonkwo, an Ibo man determined to stay traditional, which becomes problematic when Europeans begin to take over African tribes and reorganize their governments. Each egwugwu represents one of the nine villages of the clan, and all gather prior to the tribunal in a hut exclusive to members of the esoteric cult. Outside the private hut lies the ilo, the village green, where the Ibo hold these courts and the crowd gathers around the opposing parties and the stools specified for the elders to watch. The organization and work behind such an procedure supports the Ibo s civility in that citizens are using their time to settle issues that others have and work together to solve problems that may not even involve them. When a culture cooperates to achieve peace, it proves that their relationships with each other are healthy and without any bonds between citizens to hold a culture together, there will undoubtedly be separation which leads to falling apart. The fact that the Ibo do this supports their civility and that they do not need imperialism. Further evidence is provided when Evil Forest, the leader of the egwugwu, states We have heard both sides of the case... our duty is not to blame this man or to praise that, but to settle the dispute (93.) When a court hears both sides of a case, it proves that they value equality which is a key quality in a civilized society as it allows everyone in the clan to be treated the same and that prevents displeasure which could lead to a clan s destruction. Automatic telegraphs used machinery to transmit messages at higher speeds than those sent and received by Morse telegraph operators. Hand operators averaged 25 40 words per minute while the transmission speeds of automatic telegraphs ranged from 60 120 words per minute for the ink recording automatic telegraphs used in England to 500 1000 words per minute for Edison s chemical recording system. However, even though transmission speeds were much higher with automatic telegraphs, individual messages took longer to prepare for transmission and delivery. Automatic telegraphs were most economical for long messages, such as the news reports sent by the Associated Press. The more common short business and personal messages sent by telegraph were transmitted more economically by hand operators, because they could send the message from the original form submitted by the customer, and they translated the Morse code directly into a final message as they received it. Automatic messages needed to be translated into perforated tape before they could be run through a transmitter, and at the other end, the message had to transcribed from the recorded Morse code before it could be delivered to the customer.
