NETWORK PROVISIONING INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
• Network provisioning also called as circuit provisioning is the
process of setting up and configuring network devices such as
routers, switches and firewalls to enable communication between
devices and provide new services to users.
• The design of trunk and a special service circuit is done by
application programs written is operating system.
Example:
• Trunk Integrated Record Keeping System(TIRKS) developed by
Bell system.
• Network provisioning is broadband wireless area network(WAN)
communication using ATM technology is more complex
• Each ATM switch has knowledge of the Virtual Path-Virtual
Circuit(VP-VC) of each session connection assignment of VP-VC
for end-to-end design into the ATM switch.
TIRKS
• The TIRKS System is the Operating system used for circuit order control,
circuit provisioning, and inventory management of facilities and
equipment.
• TIRKS is used in automated circuit provisioning of trunks.
• A trunk is a logical circuit between two switching offices and it traverses
over many facilities.
• The designed circuit will identify transmission facilities between
switching offices and equipment in intermediate and end offices.
NETWORK PROVISIONING REQUIREMENTS

o Instead of circuit-switched
connections, we have packet-
switched paths for information to
be transmitted from source to
destination
o Each packet takes an independent path
and the routers at various nodes switch
each packet based on the load in the links
o In the connection oriented circuit
requirements , permanent and switched
virtual circuit demands need to be
accommodated for end-to-end
demands on the various links.
o Network Provisiong for packet-switched
network is based on performance statistics
and quality of service requirements
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
• An efficient database system is an essential part of the inventory management system. Some of the obvious
access keys are the component description or part number , components that match a set of characteristics,
components in use and in spare, and components to be freed-up for future use.
• Two of the system that TIRKS uses are equipment inventory (E1) and facilitates inventory (F1). With such
a detailed inventory system, TIRKS can anticipate circuit provisioning for the future with components that
would be available.
• Legacy inventory management systems use hierarchical and scaler-based database systems. These have
limitations and can be removed by using relational database technology.
• New NMSs, such as in OSI CMIP and Web-based management , use object-oriented technology.
• These manage objects are Object-oriented managed objects. An object - oriented relational database is
helpful in configuration and Inventory management in such an Environment.
