The Scottish Legal System Is Discovering The Truth
Fundamental to the Scottish legal system is discovering the truth. In Scotland, a defendant has to be
presumed innocent until proven guilty . The burden of proof lies with the Crown, who must prove
their case against a defendant beyond a reasonable doubt. From the very beginning of the criminal
process the arrests of the suspect until the very end the conviction of the defendant the state are
empowered with many rights, such as the power to detain , which assist them in reaching the truth.
Although the state are provided with these rights, there are limitations placed on them in the form of
the rights of the defendant, such as the right to remain silent or the right to defend themself either in
person or through legal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both models fundamental principal is discovering the truth. The crime control model focuses on the
truth regardless of how it is reached whereas the due process model places restrictions on what the
state can do to discover the truth. In addition, the crime control model aims for the repression of
criminal conduct, whilst the due process model aims to prevent and eliminate crime. Packer s
intentions were not to create two separate models; rather he intended to create a spectrum from one
extreme to the other. The Scottish legal system does not wholly consist of crime control elements nor
due process elements. It is a mixture of both of these models that attempts to balance the rights of the
state to secure a conviction, with the rights of the accused to a fair trial. It can be seen that there is not
an appropriate balance between the two as there is not equal and proportionate rights given to both
parties, resulting in excessive protection being given to the defendant. This imbalance is best
described by discussing the powers of the state in contrast to the defendant s rights pre trial and during
trial.
The pre trial powers which the state are provided with lie with the police force. They are empowered
with the authority to arrest, interrogate and detain suspects. If the police see a person and suspect the
are someone who is committing a known crime then, under s.13(1) of the Criminal Procedure
(Scotland) Act 1995, they can either ask for an

Abortion Controversy Essays
The Abortion Issue
Introduction
Abortion has been a very controversial subject over these past few decades. Every time you pick up a
paper or magazine it seems there is always some protest regarding abortion, whether it be for fetal
rights or women s rights. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica the definition of abortion is the
expulsion of a fetus from the uterus before it has reached the stage of viability (in human beings,
usually about the 20th week of gestation). An abortion may occur spontaneously, in which case it is
also called a miscarriage, or it may be brought on purposefully, in which case it is often called an
induced abortion. This paper will focus only on those abortions which are considered to be induced
and will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their possibility for a promising future would not be lost due to the fact that they were missing a
hand. Abortion, like ordinary killing, could be justified only by the most compelling reasons (Marquis,
p. 400). The biggest problem with this issue is where to draw the line between severe and bearable
pain and disability. What one person might consider not worth living with may be very different from
another person s definition. What ends up happening is the development of a slippery slope between
permissible and not permissible abortions based on disabilities. There will always be disagreements on
which disabilities could be considered to have an impact on a person having a good future.
Many people opposed to abortion rely on the fact that the fetus is a human being from the moment that
they are conceived. At that moment a unique DNA is created and they argue that God places a human
soul in that just fertilized Ovum (Robinson, p.1). This has seemed to be a continuing debate between
both sides. Pro life activists disagree with the argument that a fetal life becomes a person only when
electrical activity begins in the cerebral cortex. They argue that at the time of conception all major
decisions as to what that fetus will become have been determined. For example, whether it will be
male of female, what height it will be, what build it will be, and what colour it s

Sigmund Freud And Psychoanalysis
Sigmund Freud contributed more to the modern psychological research landscape than any of his
contemporaries. Throughout his career he created one of the first empirically based methods of
understanding the human psyche. These methods are often summarized under the term Psychoanalysis
and it is defined by a series of theories which connect the human experience to human behaviors and
motivations. These theories consist of development analyses based around psychological,
physiological, and psychosexual growth. The ID Ego Superego relationship developed by Freud
attempts to categorically sort the different elements of human desires that combine to create a picture
of a healthy mind. Applying these conceptual divides to specific systems ... Show more content on

A societal participant must display a sense of morality; or the ability to determine right from wrong.
The moral compass was a result of a humans Superego according to Freud. The superego was believed
to develop later on after the Ego, which was in turn developed just after birth. The superego allows for
a higher level understanding of human relations; and creates motivations to care for other humans
beyond a direct benefit to ones self. A parallel development to the ID Ego Superego process is the
psychosexual stages of human consciousness. These stages develop over the first few years a child s
life; and Freud believed they were the primary component of sexual development in the psyche. From
birth to 18 months a child experiences the oral stage of psychosexuality; this time period finds the
child focused on the erogenous zone of the mouth. Exploration comes in the form of eating or sucking
on things; and the brain builds a relationship between these actions and pleasure. This stage can carry
extreme significance and Freud believed that events like withheld food can severely impact the child s
sense of trust as an adult. After the 18 month period

she revitalized the economy, rebuilding the outdated establishment, and electrifying the nation s
foreign policy. Margaret Thatcher challenge and did very much to topple the attitude of decline, which
had become rooted in the nation. She strived for national recovery with great energy and assurance. In
the development process, Margaret Thatcher became one of the founders of a conservative conviction
politics school. It has a compelling and enduring impact on politics that in turn earned her a higher
profile figure than any other British politician. Margaret Thatcher s government helped her to
embolden wider international movements when she successfully shifted British economy to the right.
With this there was a spread of democracy and improvement of free markets strengthened political
and economic freedom. Margaret Thatcher became one of the world s most dominant and well

Medical Experience Research Paper
Gavin McDowell Amy Professor Swathi Seeke Human Anatomy Physiology I April 11, 2016 Medical
Experience Sharing Paper Ulnar Nerve Trailer The medical experience topic I would like to explore
and discuss is the ulnar nerve, a large and important nerve, and the anatomical and physiological
sequelae of damage to it. The topic is based on my own experience. In 2010, I suffered a severe
laceration of my left arm near the wrist, which, fortunately, was able to be treated and partially
relatively quickly. This is part of the reason that I was medically retired from the Army in 2012, for
combat related injuries. The ulnar artery of that arm and several interossial tendons were also severed.
The artery was ligated (tied), and the nerve was repaired ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I suffered a laceration of my arm, which proceeded laterally from the medial aspect of my left wrist.
The laceration only reached about halfway across this site, but that was enough to cause major
physiopathology in my left hand (primarily). The laceration severed my left ulnar nerve, ulnar artery,
and palmar interossei. I immediately lost sensation in the region described above (pinky and medial
aspect of ring finger, as well as proximally down my entire hand). Table 14.4 in the textbook
illustrates exactly the region affected (McKinley, O Loughlin, Bidle 556). I completely lost motor
control of the affected region, as well. I received first aid, and eventually surgeons were able to repair
the nerve, ligate the artery ( to tie, as in ligament or ligature ; the artery could not be repaired), and
repair the palmar interossei. The reason that I still have a functioning left hand is that both the ulnar
and radial arteries supply blood to the hand. As the textbook describes (as if the authors are describing
my own situation), If the left ulnar artery were cut, the left hand and fingers could still receive blood
via the left radial artery, since both vessels contribute to the superficial and deep palmar arches

The Patient Protection Affordable Care Act Of 2010
Individual Mandate a provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.

Public policy is a system of laws, regulatory measures, a course of action by which a government
maintains order or addresses the needs of its citizens through actions defined by its constitution. The
Patient Protection Affordable Care Act is a great example of the power vested in the government to
establish laws that will assist in health care reform to provide coverage for many. The PPACA was
signed into law in March 2010 by President Barak Obama. This act represents a major adjusting of the
health care system in the United States. The Act affirms that everybody should have some basic
security when it comes to their health care. There have been many debates and questions of the
constitutionally of the health care law. The issue of the individual mandate is one that was highly
debated and objected by many. The individual mandate requires that all individuals to purchase some
minimally insurance policy or pay a penalty. Many feel that such a policy represents a fundamental
threat to liberty and an unprecedented leap of power by the federal government and clearly
unconstitutional. On June 28, 2012, in a 5 to 4 ruling the Supreme Court upheld that President Obama
s health care overhaul, indicating that it s a requirement that most Americans obtain insurance or pay a
penalty was authorized by Congress s

Looking For Alaska By John Green

Looking For Alaska by John Green
Looking For Alaska by John Green is a coming of age story focused on a shy and friendless fifteen
year old boy named Miles Halter. He leaves his home in Florida to attend Culver Creek Preparatory
School in Alabama, seeking his Great Perhaps (Green 5). It is important to note that this novel is
written in two parts, before and after. Before, Miles fits in perfect at Culver Creek where he meets his
first true friends, Chip The Colonel Martin and Alaska Young. His friends help him adjust to life at the
boarding school by teaching him to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, and pull pranks with the best of
them. Miles begins to fall helplessly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In after, however, the World Religions class becomes a focal point for wrestling with the suffering
following Alaska s death (Dean 24). This quote, while talking about the religion class, sums up the
before and after structure perfectly. Before, Pudge s labyrinth was navigating Alaska s changes in
character and his almost imaginary image of her, however after her death, he finds himself in a real
life labyrinth of pain and despair, which he only escapes by forgiveness. I found Miles to be extremely
relatable. For the first part of the book, he is experiencing the same things that I, and probably most
other high school students, experienced. This makes it easy to understand his thought process and
reasoning. That being said, he is a complete pushover. I would consider him to be the epitome of a
follower. This turns out to be a major problem for him when he refuses to stand up to Alaska driving
under the influence of alcohol. Having had friends try to drink and drive numerous times, I know that
no one wants to be that guy, but his unwillingness to put his foot down ended up costing him dearly.
John Green addresses a very serious problem that faces many people in today s society. Under no
circumstances should one allow another person to drink and drive, and I felt as though he taught this
lesson in the best way possible. Readers see the huge mistake that Miles and his friends made, and
will hopefully use it as a reference when put in a similar position,

forms the title of a novel by Ernest Hemingway during the 1920s, portraying the lives of the American

as a depiction of the lost generation .
Hemingway s writing career began early; he edited the high school newspaper and, after graduation,

The high minded ideas of their elders were not to be trusted; the only reality was truth and that was
harsh. Life was futile and often meaningless. According to quot;President Harding s back to normalcy

and emotionally barren quot;( Lost Generation 487). This demonstrates why this generation was in
search of its own values. quot; The moral hypocrisy of Prohibition that so irritated Hemingway s

The term lost generation embraces Hemingway, F.Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Archibald

the 1920s. Although they never worked together as a group, their work was at times similar:
Hemingway s world is one in which things do not grow and bear fruit, but explode, break, decompose,
or are eaten away. It is saved from total misery by visions of endurance, by what happiness the body
can give when it does not hurt, by interludes of love which cannot outcast the furlough and by a
pleasure in the landscapes of countries and cafés one can visit. A man has dignity only as he can walk
with a courage that has no purpose beyond itself among the fellow wounded, with an ear alert for the

Essay on The Effects of Television Violence on Children
The Effects of Television Violence on Children
According to the Article ?Violence on Television? published by the American Psychological
Association at the website http://www.apa.org/pubinfo/violence.html, ?violent programs on television
lead to aggressive behavior by children and teenagers who watch those programs.? That s the word
from a 1982 report by the National Institute of Mental Health, a report that confirmed and extended an
earlier study done by the Surgeon General. As a result of these and other research findings, the
American Psychological Association passed a resolution in February 1985 informing broadcasters and
the public of the potential dangers that viewing violence on television can have for children. ... Show

The researchers noticed real differences between the kids who watched the violent shows and those
who watched nonviolent ones. According to Aletha Huston, Ph.D., ?children who watch the violent
shows, even just funny cartoons, were more likely to hit out at their playmates, argue, disobey class
rules, leave tasks unfinished, and were less willing to wait for things than those who watched the
nonviolent programs.? Findings from the laboratory are further supported by field studies, which have
shown the long range effects of televised violence. Leonard Eron, Ph.D., and his associates at the
University of Illinois, found that children who watched many hours of TV violence when they were in
elementary school tended to also show a ?higher level of aggressive behavior? when they became
teenagers. By observing these youngsters until they were 30 years old, Dr. Eron found that the ones
who ?had watched a lot of TV when they were eight years old were more likely to be arrested and
prosecuted for criminal acts as adults?.
Television does influence children, however parents have tremendous power to moderate that
influence. Because there is a great deal of violence in both adult and children s programming, just
limiting the number of hours children watch television will probably

Indi An Emerging Economy And A Beacon Of High Tech Modernity
World s largest democracy, an emerging economy and on the race to become a regional/global
superpower: India has come a long way in the past few decades. Despite the evident threats of
bankruptcy, caste politics and Hindu Nationalism, India is a great example of unity in diversity and a
beacon of high tech modernity . (Corbridge et al, 2013). However, it can be said that India is stuck
between a prodigious need for cultural renaissance and the banes of class politics. (Pradhan et al,
2105: 12). The caste system in India is intricately correlated to class stratification and this is of
immense political value in India as class and caste differences shape the politics in India till a great
extent. In this essay, I will begin by talking about the association between class and caste, as this is an
important aspect in order to understand how these issues shape the politics of India. Further on, I will
talk about the gradual emergence of classes over the period of time and their influence on politics,
beginning with colonial period and concluding with the modern India. I will then attempt to display
the crucial role played by the classes during the 2014 elections. The essay will then discuss how the
Indian middle class contributes to shaping the politics of India. I will then go on to write about the
other classes and their influence over politics. To conclude, I will talk about how class is just one of
the innumerable other factors contributing to the politics in India. In

is the sick younger son. Everyone in this family has their strengths and weaknesses. In Tyrone s case
his strengths and the weight of his family s weakness makes him the most sympathetic. Jamie is the

opportunity Jamie quit every single one of them. As a last resort for his son to still be successful in
life, Tyrone has used his sphere of influence in the theater world to get him various roles. All Tyrone

for his acting career instead of thanking Tyrone for giving him some sort of career. Jamie is not the

but Tyrone believes that a car would allow Mary to get away from the house and get some fresh air

Guernica, By Pablo Picasso
Guernica by Pablo Picasso was a black and white, mural oil painting created in June of 1937 on a 349
cm × 776 cm (137.4 in × 305.5 in) canvas. The piece represents the chaos that flooded the Spanish
town of Guernica after a vicious bombing by the German and Italian forces during the Spanish Civil
War. What followed was a senseless slaughter and bloodshed with the primary focus being the
demoralization of the Basque people. The painting depicts suffering people, animals, and buildings
wrenched by violence and chaos. On the far left, there is a bull standing over what appears to be a
woman grieving over a dead child, held in her arms. On the far right we see a figure entrapped by
flames. The shape of his hand suggests that of an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Picasso plays with shadows and contrast to not only give the painting depth, but also as a form of
symbolism between the darkness and gloom of the massacre and the light peaking through cracks
which represents hope that is unattainable. The contrast also adds emphasis on areas of focus such as
with the bull at the far left and the floating head. Lines are also used for this purpose, as they direct the
viewers eye primarily to the horse near the center of the painting. There are many subtle hidden
messages within this piece that leave a haunting impression on the viewer. The bull and horse are both
essential parts of Spanish culture and play important roles in the meaning of this painting. They
illustrate both the brutalization and dehumanization of humanity during wartime, as well as the
animalistic response that all living things experience when coming into close proximity with fear and
death. Furthermore, the bull represents Spain itself, which still stands, triumphant and peaceful after
such a brutal and horrendous act of violence. The overall attitude of the painting however is less
optimistic, with brutality and chaos being the general tone. The dove inscribed in the wall represents
lost hope, as well as the glimmers of light coming in between the crack of the walls. The broken sword
and flower growing from the dismembered hand represents the birth and death of life at the hands of
humanity. The main

Bedford Researcher s Argument Essay
According to the Bedford Researcher, there are different ways for writers to get reader agreement into
their ideas. For long time ago, writer used these methods to express their thoughts, and information
develops an argument successfully ending with the reader agreement.
The First method appeals to authority. This means the writer support an argument with a theory from
an expert or a specialist person. In addition, it could be from the people who affected by an issue. This
evidence usually takes quotation, paraphrasing or summaries form.
Second, appeals to emotion. The meaning of that is making the reader think with their heart more than
their mind. This method makes the readers see the issue or problem in a different way. That strategy

It perhaps is the only place that exists that has living, breathing, and intelligent beings on it. So when
one lays back in the grass on a nice warm breezy night ,and looks up into the stars and thinks deeply

the earth is to us? What if we run out of space on earth? Or what if we use all the materials we have

the only way that we can ensure that we will have a healthy planet for future generations to use. That

Analysis Of Amazon s Amazon Essay
Amazon has outperformed every other online retailer for the past few years. There is a simple
explanation for their success. Their main strength and why consumers choose Amazon is because they
provide an excellent customer experience. They call it Customer Obsession . If a product on Amazon
is sold by or fulfilled by Amazon, the returning process is extremely simple. In my own experience
with returning products to Amazon, no matter the case, they will pay the shipping and give the
customer a full refund or a replacement for the product. This provides customers with a worry free
experience. There is absolutely no hassle if a product is defective or if the customer simply finds it
unsatisfactory.
Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO also makes it clear that technology is important to the focusing of the
customer. In Amazon s 2010 Annual Report, Bezos said, Look inside a current textbook on software
architecture, and you ll find few patterns that we don t apply at Amazon. We use high performance
transactions systems, complex rendering and object caching, workflow and queuing systems, business
intelligence and data analytics, machine learning and pattern recognition, neural networks and
probabilistic decision making, and a wide variety of other techniques. And while many of our systems
are based on the latest in computer science research, this often hasn t been sufficient: our architects
and engineers have had to advance research in directions that no academic had yet taken. Many of

The Survival Of Organisms Depends On Adaptive Behavior And...
Survival of organisms depends on adaptive behavior and species interactions. Taxis is less or more
automatic movement towards or away from a stimulus or direct movement. An example of taxis is
when a plant is put by a windowsill. The plant grows towards the light. Another example is when
stream fish automatically swim upward in the upstream direction. This example is considered positive
taxis. This type of taxis allows the fish to swim in the direction of food and allows them to not be
swept away. Kinesis is a simple change in activity or turning rate in response to a stimulus or random
movement in response to stimulus. An example of kinesis is when sow bugs become more active in
dry areas and less active in humid areas. Sow bugs does vary depending on humidity, however sow
bugs do not move toward or away from suitable moisture levels. Both taxis and kinesis will guarantee
that organisms will remain in environments that increase their chances of survival. When organisms
are put into critical conditions its activities will decrease, although when an organism is put into
positive conditions the organism will stay in that condition for the longest time possible. This behavior
will increase the survivorship of individuals of a species. Migration is a regular long distance change
in location. During migration many animals pass through environments that they have not formally
been too before. Migration can be caused by seasonal changes. For example, some bird species

The Final Group Project Required Dedication
The final group project required dedication, in depth analysis and creativity regarding the video clips
and creating the paper. The paper will consist of video clips from Parks and Recreation, The Big Bang
Theory, and House. Each clip covers material or theories relating to organizational behavior. Each clip
covers a different concept and the paper will describe in detail how each concept relates to the video
being mentioned.
During the first clip chosen from the Big Bang Theory, it showed four friends (Sheldon, Leonard,
Howard, and Raj) trying to decide on where to go for dinner and a movie. They are trying to find a
location that satisfies their needs for dinner, concession stand food, and a reasonable start time for the
movie. They begin to have difficulties mostly due to one particular member of the group and the
criteria he has set. Right away there is trouble with the main characters that perfectly represents FIRO
B theory. This theory examines differences in how people relate to one another based on their needs to
express and receive feelings of inclusion, control, and affection (citation). During the scene, one
character Sheldon has specific criteria that needs to be met, so that he can attend the movie. Other
members of the group are trying to cater to him by only considering Sheldon Approved restaurants,
but they are not finding common ground. FIRO B theory says that effective groups are ones that have
similar needs; the group in the Big Bang Theory is very

The Effects Of Pesticides On Organic Farming
Humans initially began farming organically when European farmers noticed a decrease in soil quality
and crop health due to the use of chemical fertilizers ( Pesticides in Organic... 1). This drop in soil
quality left the farmers no other choice but to cease the use of chemical fertilizers and begin
implementing less harmful supplements in order to improve crop quality ( An Oral History... ). This
less invasive method of farming, otherwise known as organic farming, takes into account the medium
and long term effect of agricultural interventions ( What Are the Environmental... ) to strengthen
environmental sustainability. Alternatively, industrial farming addresses problems as they arise,
whereas organic farming ensures a less destructive way of living by taking preventative measures
associated with the environment and health. As more consumers switch to the organic lifestyle, this
proactive trend is estimated to grow at an annual rate of 14% until 2018 within the United States
(Daniells). The estimated growth rate of the organic food market is significantly higher than the
growth rate of the conventional food market (Daniells), thereby making organic sales account for over
4 percent of total U.S. food sales (USDA ERS). According to the USDA, this organic trend has
implemented organic products in roughly three out of four conventional grocery stores in the United
States ( USDA ERS ). While conventional farmers are not losing all of their buyers, many consumers

Smith Barney is using EBITDA of 14 to 16X. Since EBITDA multiple tends to revert to a certain level

Statue Of Winchester Research Paper
What is the statue of Winchester?
The Statute of Winchester was written in 1285. It indicated a breakdown in the traditional system of
law enforcement and peacekeeping. Essentially, the statute of Winchester provided the legislative
basis for law enforcement in England. the statue Reaffirmed the position of a constable and
empowered urban constables to draft citizens as unpaid watchmen.
During the 13th century, England was going through substantial social change. With the social change,
the cities became larger and less organized by shared experiences and family power and were replaced
by urban living. The shift from a rural society to a commercial, industrial, urban and the decline of the
constable created a new innovation called watchmen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Watchmen used illegal and disruptive behavior to gain order maintenance and control. The duty of the
watchmen was to provide support to the constable. The watchmen arrested those who were violating
the law or disturbing the peace. these men would follow the watch and ward system calling out

policing. It consisted of a system. The hue and cry were established during this time, requiring citizens
to come to aid watchmen calling for help. The people that did not come to aid watchmen during a hue

emphasis on violations of law and relies on threats of arrest or actual arrests. Think of it as strict

Civil Rights Movement During The Civil War
Civil Rights Movement With the winning of the Civil War still in the minds of many, conducting
interviews of previous slaves intrigued those wanting to know what it was like being a slave. With the
interview there is a look inside the life of, a woman still in her childhood, what her life was like, and
how she dealt with being a slave. The life of a slave was no easy feat, but with perseverance many
made it to the wars end, although life still has many hardships for the Freedman today. The interview
was given to Betty Powers by the New Deals Federal Writer s Project in 1936, quite a few years after
the slaves were freed. These interviews were given to give a look into the life of a slave, what they
went through, and the pains and turmoil that white people had caused. This interview just proved how
terrible and inhumane slavery was, and why it needed to be ended, although it caused the south to
completely change its ways in the Reconstruction Era. In the textbook there were views from both the
North and the South on slavery and its end. This article is on the view of the slaves and the North,
believing it was the right thing to end slavery, and that the color of your skin doesn t mean you aren t
human. On the South s view, they believed the opposite that African Americans were below the
whites, and were meant for harsh labor. The treatment of African American s thus leads to Reverend
Henry McNeal Turner to give a speech before the Georgia State Legislator in 1868, because

Symbolism and the Theme of Incest in quot; The Fall of the...
Symbolism and incest are both very apparent themes throughout the story of The Fall of the House of
Usher , by Edgar Allan Poe, and helps us to better understand the events that occur. Poe uses his
symbolism to reveal character traits, foreshadow future events and helps his reader to understand the
events that occur throughout the story. Throughout the story we realize that the relationship between
brother and sister is not a normal sibling bond. We also see that the siblings themselves are not normal
in all the aspects of a human being. Incest is an issue throughout the story and Poe constantly used
symbolism in the story to relate back to incest. Poe uses symbolism to expose character traits

What Is The Theme Of Dulce Et Decorum Est
Wilfred Owen served as a Lieutenant in the British army during the First World War, ironically he was

The New Orleans Saints had a lousy 2014 to say the least. Sean Payton s team finished the season
ranked the second worst defense in the league, allowing an average of 384 yards per game. On the
other hand, the Saints were also ranked the best offense in the league, putting up 411.4 yards per game
last season. Nonetheless, Drew Brees and company ended up having to watch the playoffs on TV, as
they finished with a 7 9 record. So, why can New Orleans bounce back from 2014? Here are your
answers: Number 1: Drew Brees There is no question that Brees is an elite quarterback. In a season to

Introduction:
Humans have always been curious to find answers to various things of life. This curiosity and have
been a driving force for discovery. Over the years our tools have evolved from the basic light

RNA sequencing is inspiring scientists to push the limits of current research methods in understanding
how the transcriptome shapes biology and much more. RNA sequencing is becoming one of the most
significant tools in the world of modern science.

This type of NGS analysis is a powerful tool for transcript and variant discovery which otherwise

Wider Dynamic Range and Higher Sensitivity
Microarray measure continuous probe intensities. But RNA Seq quantifies individual sequence reads
aligned to a reference sequence which produces discreet (digital) read counts2. Also, by increasing or
decreasing the number of sequencing reads (coverage level or coverage depth), researchers can fine
tune the sensitivity of an experiment to accommodate different study objectives. The digital nature of
this process and the ability to control coverage levels supports an extremely broad dynamic range,
with absolute rather than relative expression values2 4.
Assuming 10 50 million mapped reads, the dynamic range of RNA Seq spans 5 orders of magnitude (
105) and is typically several orders of magnitude higher than most array technologies (103)2,5. As a
result, RNA Seq has been shown to detect a higher percentage of differentially expressed genes
compared to expression arrays, especially genes with low abundance5,6.

group A and B (p = 0.021) with group B experiencing higher pain scores post operatively than group

There are short term external sources of finance available in the form of a bank overdraft which is
flexible and can be increased/decreased instantaneously (subject to bank approval). These can be
inexpensive to arrange with competitive interest rates but these rates are higher than a term loan and
this is not a secure form of finance as a bank overdraft could become repayable on demand.
Another source of short term external funding to be considered is asset based finance which is utilised
by debt factoring which will reduce tied up funds in the customer accounts and is outsourced to a
subcontractor. According to Dyson,
there are two types of factoring: recourse factoring, where an entity obtains a loan based on the
amount of its debtor balances and non recourse factoring, where the debtor balances are sold to a
factor and the factor then takes responsibility for dealing with them. Factoring is a convenient way of
obtaining ready cash but either the interest rate on the loan or the discount on the invoices may be high

exercising good cashflow management by reducing terms and payment period to customers although
potential lost sales and the reputation of the company should be considered together with credit
policies adopted by rival businesses.

Political Theory 1010
Paper 2
Are political parties essential, or detrimental, to democratic decisionmaking? In answering this
question, give careful consideration to the different ways political parties might assist or sabotage
desirable forms of democratic rule, evaluating in each case their implications for the question.
A political party is a group of people who share similar ideas regarding the way a country should be
governed and sought to obtain the majority of the seats in the political office to further the policies
they advocate. Democratic decision making is a participative decision making style in which citizens
have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Democratic decision making is widely

Lastly, in modern democracies, political parties fail to fulfill their classical function as being peoples
representatives and enforcing the advocated policies. They tend to become such large organizations
with tremendous amount of reach and power that they dominate the government and become less and
less accountable to the people. The parties gain the power to suppress civil cases and manipulate their
way into the parliament. Large parties are also able to turn elections in their favor and spend massive
amounts of money and society s scarce resources into election campaigning, solely based on
marketing and advertisement. Thus, political parties in modern democracies are no longer instruments
of public participation in the decision making process and these reason offer enough justification
Despite having some detrimental effects on democratic decision making, political parties are an
indispensible and inevitable part of democracies. In the contemporary world, it is hard to imagine a
democracy without political parties. It also wont be wrong to say that sometimes political theorists are
especially critical of political parties and tend to regard all the misgivings of democracy onto political
parties. Goodin, in his essay The place of parties asserts with the help of his no party democracy

  • 2. The Scottish Legal System Is Discovering The Truth Fundamental to the Scottish legal system is discovering the truth. In Scotland, a defendant has to be presumed innocent until proven guilty . The burden of proof lies with the Crown, who must prove their case against a defendant beyond a reasonable doubt. From the very beginning of the criminal process the arrests of the suspect until the very end the conviction of the defendant the state are empowered with many rights, such as the power to detain , which assist them in reaching the truth. Although the state are provided with these rights, there are limitations placed on them in the form of the rights of the defendant, such as the right to remain silent or the right to defend themself either in person or through legal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both models fundamental principal is discovering the truth. The crime control model focuses on the truth regardless of how it is reached whereas the due process model places restrictions on what the state can do to discover the truth. In addition, the crime control model aims for the repression of criminal conduct, whilst the due process model aims to prevent and eliminate crime. Packer s intentions were not to create two separate models; rather he intended to create a spectrum from one extreme to the other. The Scottish legal system does not wholly consist of crime control elements nor due process elements. It is a mixture of both of these models that attempts to balance the rights of the state to secure a conviction, with the rights of the accused to a fair trial. It can be seen that there is not an appropriate balance between the two as there is not equal and proportionate rights given to both parties, resulting in excessive protection being given to the defendant. This imbalance is best described by discussing the powers of the state in contrast to the defendant s rights pre trial and during trial. The pre trial powers which the state are provided with lie with the police force. They are empowered with the authority to arrest, interrogate and detain suspects. If the police see a person and suspect the are someone who is committing a known crime then, under s.13(1) of the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995, they can either ask for an ... • 3. Abortion Controversy Essays The Abortion Issue Introduction Abortion has been a very controversial subject over these past few decades. Every time you pick up a paper or magazine it seems there is always some protest regarding abortion, whether it be for fetal rights or women s rights. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica the definition of abortion is the expulsion of a fetus from the uterus before it has reached the stage of viability (in human beings, usually about the 20th week of gestation). An abortion may occur spontaneously, in which case it is also called a miscarriage, or it may be brought on purposefully, in which case it is often called an induced abortion. This paper will focus only on those abortions which are considered to be induced and will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their possibility for a promising future would not be lost due to the fact that they were missing a hand. Abortion, like ordinary killing, could be justified only by the most compelling reasons (Marquis, p. 400). The biggest problem with this issue is where to draw the line between severe and bearable pain and disability. What one person might consider not worth living with may be very different from another person s definition. What ends up happening is the development of a slippery slope between permissible and not permissible abortions based on disabilities. There will always be disagreements on which disabilities could be considered to have an impact on a person having a good future. Many people opposed to abortion rely on the fact that the fetus is a human being from the moment that they are conceived. At that moment a unique DNA is created and they argue that God places a human soul in that just fertilized Ovum (Robinson, p.1). This has seemed to be a continuing debate between both sides. Pro life activists disagree with the argument that a fetal life becomes a person only when electrical activity begins in the cerebral cortex. They argue that at the time of conception all major decisions as to what that fetus will become have been determined. For example, whether it will be male of female, what height it will be, what build it will be, and what colour it s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Sigmund Freud And Psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud contributed more to the modern psychological research landscape than any of his contemporaries. Throughout his career he created one of the first empirically based methods of understanding the human psyche. These methods are often summarized under the term Psychoanalysis and it is defined by a series of theories which connect the human experience to human behaviors and motivations. These theories consist of development analyses based around psychological, physiological, and psychosexual growth. The ID Ego Superego relationship developed by Freud attempts to categorically sort the different elements of human desires that combine to create a picture of a healthy mind. Applying these conceptual divides to specific systems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A societal participant must display a sense of morality; or the ability to determine right from wrong. The moral compass was a result of a humans Superego according to Freud. The superego was believed to develop later on after the Ego, which was in turn developed just after birth. The superego allows for a higher level understanding of human relations; and creates motivations to care for other humans beyond a direct benefit to ones self. A parallel development to the ID Ego Superego process is the psychosexual stages of human consciousness. These stages develop over the first few years a child s life; and Freud believed they were the primary component of sexual development in the psyche. From birth to 18 months a child experiences the oral stage of psychosexuality; this time period finds the child focused on the erogenous zone of the mouth. Exploration comes in the form of eating or sucking on things; and the brain builds a relationship between these actions and pleasure. This stage can carry extreme significance and Freud believed that events like withheld food can severely impact the child s sense of trust as an adult. After the 18 month period ... Medical Experience Research Paper Gavin McDowell Amy Professor Swathi Seeke Human Anatomy Physiology I April 11, 2016 Medical Experience Sharing Paper Ulnar Nerve Trailer The medical experience topic I would like to explore and discuss is the ulnar nerve, a large and important nerve, and the anatomical and physiological sequelae of damage to it. The topic is based on my own experience. In 2010, I suffered a severe laceration of my left arm near the wrist, which, fortunately, was able to be treated and partially relatively quickly. This is part of the reason that I was medically retired from the Army in 2012, for combat related injuries. The ulnar artery of that arm and several interossial tendons were also severed. I suffered a laceration of my arm, which proceeded laterally from the medial aspect of my left wrist. The laceration only reached about halfway across this site, but that was enough to cause major physiopathology in my left hand (primarily). The laceration severed my left ulnar nerve, ulnar artery, and palmar interossei. I immediately lost sensation in the region described above (pinky and medial aspect of ring finger, as well as proximally down my entire hand). Table 14.4 in the textbook illustrates exactly the region affected (McKinley, O Loughlin, Bidle 556). I completely lost motor control of the affected region, as well. I received first aid, and eventually surgeons were able to repair the nerve, ligate the artery ( to tie, as in ligament or ligature ; the artery could not be repaired), and repair the palmar interossei. The reason that I still have a functioning left hand is that both the ulnar and radial arteries supply blood to the hand. As the textbook describes (as if the authors are describing my own situation), If the left ulnar artery were cut, the left hand and fingers could still receive blood via the left radial artery, since both vessels contribute to the superficial and deep palmar arches (McKinley, O Loughlin, Bidle ... Maria Colon Jones Liberty University PPOL 501 May 9, 2016 Public policy is a system of laws, regulatory measures, a course of action by which a government maintains order or addresses the needs of its citizens through actions defined by its constitution. The Patient Protection Affordable Care Act is a great example of the power vested in the government to establish laws that will assist in health care reform to provide coverage for many. The PPACA was signed into law in March 2010 by President Barak Obama. This act represents a major adjusting of the health care system in the United States. The Act affirms that everybody should have some basic security when it comes to their health care. There have been many debates and questions of the constitutionally of the health care law. The issue of the individual mandate is one that was highly debated and objected by many. The individual mandate requires that all individuals to purchase some minimally insurance policy or pay a penalty. Many feel that such a policy represents a fundamental threat to liberty and an unprecedented leap of power by the federal government and clearly unconstitutional. Looking For Alaska By John Green Dylan Moore Professor Dorwick English 350 9 February 2017 Looking For Alaska by John Green Looking For Alaska by John Green is a coming of age story focused on a shy and friendless fifteen year old boy named Miles Halter. He leaves his home in Florida to attend Culver Creek Preparatory School in Alabama, seeking his Great Perhaps (Green 5). It is important to note that this novel is written in two parts, before and after. Before, Miles fits in perfect at Culver Creek where he meets his first true friends, Chip The Colonel Martin and Alaska Young. His friends help him adjust to life at the boarding school by teaching him to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, and pull pranks with the best of them. Miles begins to fall helplessly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In after, however, the World Religions class becomes a focal point for wrestling with the suffering following Alaska s death (Dean 24). This quote, while talking about the religion class, sums up the before and after structure perfectly. Before, Pudge s labyrinth was navigating Alaska s changes in character and his almost imaginary image of her, however after her death, he finds himself in a real life labyrinth of pain and despair, which he only escapes by forgiveness. I found Miles to be extremely relatable. For the first part of the book, he is experiencing the same things that I, and probably most other high school students, experienced. This makes it easy to understand his thought process and reasoning. That being said, he is a complete pushover. I would consider him to be the epitome of a follower. This turns out to be a major problem for him when he refuses to stand up to Alaska driving under the influence of alcohol. Having had friends try to drink and drive numerous times, I know that no one wants to be that guy, but his unwillingness to put his foot down ended up costing him dearly. John Green addresses a very serious problem that faces many people in today s society. Under no circumstances should one allow another person to drink and drive, and I felt as though he taught this lesson in the best way possible. However, it can be said that India is stuck between a prodigious need for cultural renaissance and the banes of class politics. (Pradhan et al, 2105: 12). The caste system in India is intricately correlated to class stratification and this is of immense political value in India as class and caste differences shape the politics in India till a great extent. In this essay, I will begin by talking about the association between class and caste, as this is an important aspect in order to understand how these issues shape the politics of India. Further on, I will talk about the gradual emergence of classes over the period of time and their influence on politics, beginning with colonial period and concluding with the modern India. I will then attempt to display the crucial role played by the classes during the 2014 elections. The essay will then discuss how the Indian middle class contributes to shaping the politics of India. Picasso plays with shadows and contrast to not only give the painting depth, but also as a form of symbolism between the darkness and gloom of the massacre and the light peaking through cracks which represents hope that is unattainable. The contrast also adds emphasis on areas of focus such as with the bull at the far left and the floating head. Lines are also used for this purpose, as they direct the viewers eye primarily to the horse near the center of the painting. There are many subtle hidden messages within this piece that leave a haunting impression on the viewer. The bull and horse are both essential parts of Spanish culture and play important roles in the meaning of this painting. They illustrate both the brutalization and dehumanization of humanity during wartime, as well as the animalistic response that all living things experience when coming into close proximity with fear and death. Furthermore, the bull represents Spain itself, which still stands, triumphant and peaceful after such a brutal and horrendous act of violence. The overall attitude of the painting however is less optimistic, with brutality and chaos being the general tone. Taxis is less or more automatic movement towards or away from a stimulus or direct movement. An example of taxis is when a plant is put by a windowsill. The plant grows towards the light. Another example is when stream fish automatically swim upward in the upstream direction. This example is considered positive taxis. Essentially, the statute of Winchester provided the legislative basis for law enforcement in England. the statue Reaffirmed the position of a constable and empowered urban constables to draft citizens as unpaid watchmen. During the 13th century, England was going through substantial social change. With the social change, the cities became larger and less organized by shared experiences and family power and were replaced by urban living. The watchmen arrested those who were violating the law or disturbing the peace. these men would follow the watch and ward system calling out anything strange and pursuing the criminals. The watch and ward was the first organized attempt at policing. It consisted of a system. The hue and cry were established during this time, requiring citizens to come to aid watchmen calling for help. The people that did not come to aid watchmen during a hue and cry, where considered accomplices and punished as criminals. Watchman style policing places an emphasis on violations of law and relies on threats of arrest or actual arrests. Think of it as strict enforcement of criminal law. • 28. Civil Rights Movement During The Civil War Civil Rights Movement With the winning of the Civil War still in the minds of many, conducting interviews of previous slaves intrigued those wanting to know what it was like being a slave. With the interview there is a look inside the life of, a woman still in her childhood, what her life was like, and how she dealt with being a slave. The life of a slave was no easy feat, but with perseverance many made it to the wars end, although life still has many hardships for the Freedman today. The interview was given to Betty Powers by the New Deals Federal Writer s Project in 1936, quite a few years after the slaves were freed. These interviews were given to give a look into the life of a slave, what they went through, and the pains and turmoil that white people had caused. This interview just proved how terrible and inhumane slavery was, and why it needed to be ended, although it caused the south to completely change its ways in the Reconstruction Era. In the textbook there were views from both the North and the South on slavery and its end. This article is on the view of the slaves and the North, believing it was the right thing to end slavery, and that the color of your skin doesn t mean you aren t human. On the South s view, they believed the opposite that African Americans were below the whites, and were meant for harsh labor. The treatment of African American s thus leads to Reverend Henry McNeal Turner to give a speech before the Georgia State Legislator in 1868, because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Symbolism and incest are both very apparent themes throughout the story of The Fall of the House of Usher , by Edgar Allan Poe, and helps us to better understand the events that occur. Poe uses his symbolism to reveal character traits, foreshadow future events and helps his reader to understand the events that occur throughout the story. Throughout the story we realize that the relationship between brother and sister is not a normal sibling bond. We also see that the siblings themselves are not normal in all the aspects of a human being. Wider Dynamic Range and Higher Sensitivity Microarray measure continuous probe intensities. But RNA Seq quantifies individual sequence reads aligned to a reference sequence which produces discreet (digital) read counts2. Also, by increasing or decreasing the number of sequencing reads (coverage level or coverage depth), researchers can fine tune the sensitivity of an experiment to accommodate different study objectives. The digital nature of this process and the ability to control coverage levels supports an extremely broad dynamic range, with absolute rather than relative expression values2 4. Assuming 10 50 million mapped reads, the dynamic range of RNA Seq spans 5 orders of magnitude ( 105) and is typically several orders of magnitude higher than most array technologies (103)2,5.
